Hello,
I wanted to install CyanogenMod in my Defy. So I was following this page (beta. download. cyanogenmod.org/install) but when I tried to install the OneClick.apk, I keep on having the "Parse error. There is a problem parsing the package."
In case you ask me if I have enabled installing from "unknown sources", the answer is Yes. It's here:
Settings > Applications > Unknown sources
So I'm wondering.... is my Defy a real Defy? Or is it a Defy+ for European market but called Defy? Oh yeah, I'm in Europe and I've heard that some vendors would modify some models for European markets but call them differently.
So, how to tell if my phone is a Defy+?
Here are the infos from Settings:
System version: Version.34.164.3.MB525Blur.Vodafone.en.FR
Model number: MB525
Android version: 2.2.2
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9-g050ccf2
And of course, if somebody can tell me how to install CyanogenMod in my phone, I'd appreciate a lot.
Thanks.

MB525 = Defy
To install cyanogenmod, you have to:
Root the phone(search for framaroot)
Install 2ndinit apk(search Google)
Open app and install bootmenu
Search for this file:defy_twrp_recovery_2.6.3.0.zip and download it to the device
Flash the above file via CWM, acessible via the bootmenu (press volume down while a blue led lgihts up, while phone boots up)
Download and flash cyanogenmod from the thread in the dev section. Be sure to wipe data, system and cache from TWRP.
Thanks for the reply.
So I suppose the OneClick.apk is supposed to root the phone but I can do it otherwisely.
What are CWM and TWRP?

I had. Not only had I read this "beginner's guide" before coming here, I had also read others like
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853672
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2095264
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
But they are not really clear. Esp the so-called "beginner's guide". Inside it, there are a lot of abbreviations that I have no idea what they are:
I later gathered that CWM means Clockwork Mod, but what is MIUI? Multiple I(?) User Interface?
What is "to brick"? Isn't it rather "to break"?
What is BL7? That's where I stopped because according to the guide, rooting depends on BL7 or not. As I have no idea what it is, I'm stuck.
Some guides talk about One Click, others on eFuse. So confusing.

MIUI Is the ROM project of Xiaomi, it's just a ROM
This is a brick
http://bodyshapestyle.com/wp-content/plugins/single-brick.jpg
So when you hear about a bricked phone, imagine the brick on the image above, that means, unuseful, broken
BL7 means bootloader version 7, don't pay attention to that for now while you're learning how to flash.
Search for framaroot.apk to root your phone like they said above

By ROM, I suppose you mean Operating System or Firmware.
In the guide, there are several places where it's written "CM7 or MIUI". Does that mean MIUI is an alternative to CM7?

Very funny, haaaa haaaa haaaa I know what a brick it.
To brick means to close or to wall with brick. There is this sentence in the guide "Thanks to this locked Bootloader, is really, really hard to Brick your Defy." in a user's viewpoint, why would I want to "brick" my Defy? That doesn't make any sense. I mean, if I'm reading the guide, that's because I want to root the Defy, ie to remove the constraint. To brick means to put in constraint.
There is another sentence: "... this ("this refers to Nandroid backup) is almost harmless, meaning you CANT brick your phone doing it, though you can make Android not boot and a new SBF or Nandroid would need to be installed."
Does it really mean what it's written? Using Nandroid backup has the intention to brick my phone??

No, don't get it! A brick is useful. A brick is not broken. I don't see the relationship between a (real) brick and a bricked phone as you defined it. You or someone have reinvented the meaning of the word "brick".
There got to be a glossary for "rooting phones" to give the meaning of all these meaningless words and abbreviations.

Right, this is the most important part! There is no way to guess if I have BL7 or not just by reading that guide. In other words, the guide is not self-contained. So don't get mad when a "newbie" asked some "stupid" questions -- the problem does not necessarily come from "newbies", but can come from others.
Yeah, I had used framaroot and I was asked to choose an exploit!?? Tried Gimli, screen displayed "Unroot done". Tried Aragorn, doesn't seem to work. That's why I wanted to go the "traditional" way to make sure my Defy is correctly rooted.
Hey mate, you're the one getting mad here, take it easy, no one is judging you of anything,
So, you say a brick is useful, yeah, of course it's useful to place it in a building, but if your phone gets bricked you would place it in a building? Don't be that strict about the words, when a phone gets broken and unuseful it turns literally into a brick so why do you complain a lot with this? Sure, you won't want to brick your phone, the phrase "Thanks to this locked Bootloader, is really, really hard to brick your Defy" is just to give you confidence about flashing without being in risk of damaging your phone. (Almost all phones have unlocked bootloader so they can get broken easier)
MIUI and CM7 are two different ROMs, two different options, yes, ROM is a custom image of android that you can flash on your phone, there are a lot of ROMs for Defy including MIUI and CyanogenMod
Another way to root your phone is to download SuperOneClick for PC (zip file),
First activate debugging mode on your Defy, go to Settings > Applications > Development > Debugging mode.
Plug your phone into the PC and open SuperOneClick.exe, click the ROOT button and let the program do its job, your phone will be restarted twice, if it asks you to install busybox, say yes, and if it asks you to test the root, click no, and done, your phone will be rooted and you will see an app called Superuser in your phone.

Hi
I am new to Andriod, I just bought a Atrix from someone which came with the cyanogenmod 7. I was able to install Google market, however I am not sure how to restore to stock, atleast for now I want to restore to stock get more comfortable with it and then install custom rom
I downloaded the drivers off motorolla, when I plug-in into usb it is not reconized. I also downloaded the roms posted on the motorolla website and tried installing the different version ( gingerbread and froyo) but I got error code 7.
If anyone can explain me in lament terms what would be needed to be done to restore to factory, I would greatly appreciate. I do not teether or need hot-spot for now, so will do custom little later..Thanks
Also I checked, there were no backup, so can restore off backup.
Install ROM Manager from Market, flash CWM with it. Then download a fruitcake from XDA dev section to your phone. Finally open ROM Manager and install it, be sure to check both wipes when you get prompted to do so by ROM Manager
Easiest way
would be to install a similar ROM such as Alien 4 without the theme. It looks and works almost exactly the same way as the stock ROM but with added goodies such as Tethering (all you have to do is turn it on to make it work) and the Droid 3 camera app which allows you to record video in 1080p. Just download the zip file into the memory card and flash it and you should be good. Let me know if you need assistance
Just a sidenote, you asked for "stock Android"... CM7 is as close as you are going to come (at this moment) to what we call "vanilla" or even "stock" ANDROID. I understand you want stock MOTOBLUR, but that is far from stock Android.. I thought I would point that out to you jic.
Sorry for the confusion for stock android I mean motoblur gingerbread. I meant the one which ships with the phone and since Motorola came out with gingerbread update I would like to have that installed.
Someone I was talking to today said if you root you device and try going back, device will brick, is there risk involved in this process?

you're being misinformed, rooting your device poses no risk. all rooting does is give your device root access to system files.
however, if you do the Gingerbread OTA update through Motorola, you're going to end up stuck on Gingerbread. if you attempt to RSD flash a .sbf file to downgrade, you will break your device.
however, you can install a froyo fruit cake to downgrade to Froyo if you don't like Gingerbread.
just look at the top of this forum and read the noob thread, it has all the information you need. after reading it, read it again. and after that, go into the development forum and read all of the stickies there. after that, go and read the noob thread again and then you should have all your questions answered.
I have an Impulse 4g, which I hear is the Ideos X5 u8800, can I flash it with this:
Code:
[ROM] Oxygen for u8800 (Latest gingerbread, clean and simple)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1149150
I just want to make sure everything will work so I dont brick it. Thanks
I think yours is CDMA, so I wouldn't recommend flashing a U8800 on that.
Reading up on it, it says it is a GSM, because it is for AT&T. I also see this everywhere too:
Code:
Huawei Impulse 4G, which in reality is a rebranded Ideos X5
According to GSM Arena, Impulse 4G is identical with Huawei X5 U8800:
http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=4142&idPhone2=3596
So, I retract my previous statement, I think any Rom here would be just fine.
My advice is don't rush, remember that there are many differences with the X5 models, there's an a U8800H, U8800Pro, U8800 etc... and the roms that have been developed so far are meant for the U8800 my point is there is a high risk that you brick your phone and make it unusable.
My brother had a U8800H rooted it with superoneclick, flashed CWM and tried to flash Oxygen rom and pufff the phone was instantly bricked, fortunately he was smart enough to backup the images from the pink screen before that.
Double check with a dev first if it's compatible.
Maybe Genokolar or Tommixoft can give u that info otherwise you will have a nice paperweight.

That sounds like a good idea, I'll wait for now. This brings me to another question, is there anyway that I can edit the internal microphone settings? Would I have to root it? I have a regular pair of headphones that I like to use, but then when I get a call the internal microphone is muted because the headphones are plugged in. I would like to listen with my headphones and talk using the internal microphone. Is there a work around for this? Im guessing someone with the u8800 has been able to get a workaround for this. Thanks

Ok "katu2006", first of all i didn't state that Tommixoft is a developer, he just happens to be around and involved in pretty much everything about X5 just read several posts.
Second i just stated the U8800H example so he can understand that there are several versions of the X5 and they ALL look the same but that doesn't mean they support each others roms.
Third you dumbass if i told him that he has to check with someone that knows it is maybe because i could not give him that answer and i don't take anything for granted without a proper research.
And finally regarding the bricked statement maybe my english is not so good (I'm dominican) because what i tried to say and i recognise is that he told me it was bricked but actually it was stuck on a bootloop on the HUAWEI screen logo.
So i will keep advising people and you should shut the hell up if you are not going to say anything constructive.
And just to be clear i wasn't the one who thought that the Impulse 4G was CDMA was i?

AT&T Impulse 4G upgrade woes
I essentially spent my entire day yesterday trying to get my Impulse upgraded to the Oxygen ROM for U8800 without success. Here's what I did...
1. WORKED - Super One Click worked for rooting it
2. WORKED - CWM loaded and granted SU privileges
3. NOT SURE - Flash CWM Recovery (says success)
4. WORKED - Hit Backup Current ROM and reboots
5. FAIL - Upgrade.zip fails integrity check with file signature error (E:failed to verify whole-file signature...E:signature verification failed)
I stopped here.
I've Googled the sig fail and everything points to an Advanced Option for disabling signature verification. The recovery screen doesn't show CWM image like those I Googled. It shows "Android system recovery <3e>" at the top. I'm sure this means step 3 above actually FAILED. I've tried mounting (via Pink screen) and replacing recovery.img manually, but the phone freezes on the AT&T splash indefinitely. Putting the original recovery.img file back restores functionality.
Any clues?
Thanks!
How are you able to root it? I tryed z4root, and super one click and I cannot get it to work....
Have you tried GingerBreak? It worked on the stock 2.2 ROM in my case.
Sent from my u8800 using XDA App
z4root didn't work for me either. I did SOC in a Windows 7 virtual machine in "auto" mode and it worked. Subsequently I tried the "psneuter" option and didn't work. Chose Gingerbreak and that worked. So, agreed with Blefish.

I just realized something else, what do you mean by this?
"5. FAIL - Upgrade.zip fails integrity check with file signature error (E:failed to verify whole-file signature...E:signature verification failed)"
Just want to double check these:
You're trying to flash Oxygen, not a stock Rom?
You've definitely copied the Oxygen-r4-2.2.2.zip on the root directory of the SD card?
Also, you're definitely selecting "Install zip from SD card" and then browse/select the Oxygen-r4-2.2.2.zip file?
katu2006,
The CMW-based Recovery 4.0.1.5 download link is unavailable, but I tried the Unofficial CWM Recovery 5.0.2.3, and it still does not work. When trying to get to the recovery console it hangs at the at&t screen. When i use the original recovery.img, it works fine and I can go into recovery console.
*edit*
Also, I cant get anything to root it... Gingerbreak just saying its exploiting, but it was sitting there for 20 minutes...
In step 5 this is where CWM reboots to the backup. I wanted to backup before flashing and stopped here. I'm guessing the upgrade.zip is something contains a script that backs things up?

4.0.1.5 link doesn't work for me, either. I tried the 5.0.2.3 yesterday with the same effect, freezes at AT&T.
Make sure you install the drivers for the Ideos. That was my problem initially. Search for "u8800-drivers.zip" and you'll find it in the first link.
Ok, let me clarify a few things here.
Rooting the device will not help you install a custom Rom. If you want to get better battery life, you're not going to achieve this by rooting the existing Rom.
You should focus on getting CWM on your device. Once that is up and running, that's when you can install a custom Rom.
About the drivers, if you can access the "image" folder in bootloader (pink screen), then your drivers are installed.
The link for 4.0.1.5 is down because there is something wrong with Genokolar's project and the Google Projects account...
There is one more CWM recovery, that was designed for U88000 Pro...It's a bit risky, but I would give it shot...

If this doesn't work, I'd suggest contacting Stockwell, he may be able to help you...
I've run out of ideas, it looks like AT&T Impulse 4G has a slightly different recovery mod...
Hey, guys (and girls? )! Just got a new DEFY+ couple of days back and I'd like to get the most out of it. It's already working all smooth and sexy, but I'm sure it can do better. So I need some assistance
Phone info:
DEFY+ (MB526)
Android 2.3.4
System 45.0.74.MB526.Retail.en.DE
Kernel 2.6.32.9-gbad50c3
Build 4.5.1-134_DFP-74
I've rooted it yesterday and I'm pretty sure it was successful, since the phone is working and I've got SuperUser on it since then (I've followed the root part of the all-in-one super DEFY guide thread)
About backing up, I would like to be able to go back to my old backup at any time. Is that even possible? I know I probably never will go back to it, but I like to play things safe. If it is possible, could you teach me how or point me to some nice guide/thread on that?
When it comes to flashing, I'd like to try CM, WAJKIUI and MS2G. Any more ROMs that are a must try? Now, I didn't quite understand... Are there different versions for defy and defy+? Or...which ROMs are compatible with defy+? I've read somewhere that all defy ROMs can't use defy+'s battery properly, so that's what concerns me. Nandload? How to?
I'm sorry if these are stupid questions, I've tried finding out everything from the guides, but I just didn't find enough information... I do have RSD (v5.0.0, is it okay?) and the drivers, all set up. I'm not asking for anyone to write an essay for me, it will be perfectly fine if you just point me to some (really really) good guides. I'll be grateful for any and every answer!
*EDIT #1* Well, I've tried to learn some more... Let's go step by step. Should I install 2ndInit app or some other custom recovery app?
I can beg if need be
"*EDIT #1* Well, I've tried to learn some more... Let's go step by step. Should I install 2ndInit app or some other custom recovery app?"
Hi,
as I've seen the guides, yes.
I've defy, so I didn't try it, but heard from many people with defy+ with CM or MIUI.
BUT before it I suggest to you:
- get a stock sbf of your rom. It is necessary if you want get back the original factory state. hope here you find it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966537
- install titanium backup from market (I know this, but you can install any similar app) and make a full backup (all user and system app). It saves all data, installed apps with settings ...
- make backup of your contacts and sms-s with stock app (it is possible I think)
- make backup of your sd content
After that you can install 2ndinitdefy. Follow the instructions in the program. I suggest 1.4.2 version. If it doesn't work go to 2.0. The 2.0 has instructions not on the main screen but in its menu.
After the 2 reboot (regarding 2ndinit install) you can do a nandroid backup with clockworkmod recovery.
Reboot, push vol down at blue led (after start with 8-10 sec). You are at bootloader. Use vol up/down to navigate and power to enter a menu. Go to recovery-> custom recovery->backup and recovery->backup all. It takes some time. You can save this nandroid to computer (just for safety ) You find it in sd/clockworkmod/backup.
Now you have backups. Go ahead, install the custom rom of your choice.
I recommend WajkIUI. You find the link in my signature and you find installing instructions in Wajk's first post. And of course there are defy+ users in that thread as I remember, you can ask question there.
ps: everything is your responsibility
Was it helpful? Just use thank button
Good luck bro/sis !!!
Thank you for such a long reply!
I have installed 2ndInit, using the v2.0 installer, but I chose the stable version of the 2nd init itself, instead of the latest one. That stable one said it was meant for CM and MIUI, so I'm guessing I'll be alright with WajkIUI as well!
I'll follow the steps you gave me for making a complete backup of everything on my phone and then I'll start looking for a ROM that's fully mb526 compatible (I need >10 posts to be able to post in the development section :/ )
P.S. I'm a bro
I see. This 10 post rule a bit annoying. But as I know you can send private message to anyone. In the Wajkiui thread there are some people with 526.
I've got my 10 posts Thank you once more and I'm sure we'll be talking again soon!
I'm having a hard time finding a full SBF of my stock ROM...
It's 4.5.1-134_DFP-74 (Android 2.3.4)
I don't really understand the codes in that name, so can someone please tell me if I could flash some close to this sbf if I ever need to? I've found some with just that value after "...DFP-" different. Would they be okay?
Please let me know! I wanna load up something different, but don't want to do so until I have a full sbf as well, just in case of emergency

Mate, thanks for the info, but I've already found and flashed a full .sbf The topic said it was 2.3.4, while it turned out to be 2.3.5, but I don't mind, got my phone working again after a failed flashing of cm7.2..!
Cheers
Hi Guys!
I know, some people will hate me now because I opened a thread for that.
But the search did not help for chinese FW, so I wanna give it a try here!
I just got a chinese Atrix with the following information in settings:
System Version:45.2.14.ME860.ChinaRetail.en.CN
Android: 2.3.5
Baseband: BP_N_01.41.00R
Webtop: Unavailable
Kernel:2.6.32.9-00007-g9570040 [email protected]#2
Build number: 4.5.3-118_OLY-14
Superuser is already instaled and when i bootup the phone, "Unlocked" is shown in the upper left corner!
What I wanna know:
Is it rooted (yes of course, I think!)
Is the bootloader unlocked (never had a phone that says "unlocked" when booting up with an unlocked BL...)
Can I just flash CM9 for example or is there anything I should be aware of?
Sorry for beeing an Atrix n00b =)
And thanks for all suggestions!
The Unlocked text on the Motorola screen is an indicator that your device's boot loader is unlocked. I would recommend referencing the NOOB threads covering rooting and flashing ROMs for the rest.
Thanks for that!
But it's already rooted (super user is installed and I tried apps that need root).
What I wanted to know is, if I can just flash new roms or do I have to be cautioness, like many threads say: Don't flash back if u use build nr. xyz...

Check if you have cwm recovery installed. If not install the latest and flash the latest version of cm9 through cwm

Atrix 4g from Taobao 19 Apr.
Hi muhski,
I am in the same situation.
I just buy Atrix 4g from Taobao and receive it on 18 Apr.
When Gapps is not installed, I was very disappointed and call them to complain.
They ask me to send it back but I tried to get to know the phone more.
System Version:45.2.14.ME860.ChinaRetail.en.CN
Android: 2.3.5
Baseband: BP_N_01.37.00R (Yours is BP_N_01.41.00R)
Webtop: WT-1.2.0-163_11 (Yours is Unavailable)
Kernel:2.6.32.9-00007-g9570040 [email protected]#2
Build number: 4.5.3-118_OLY-14
Superuser is already installed and rooted.
Booting up the phone, "Unlocked" is shown in the upper left corner!
If you do a thorough search, you will know that to start to flash cm9, you need:
1. bootloader unlocked, machine rooted
2. clockworkMod (cwm) flashed
3. then flashing CM will be easy. Just put some zip files in root of sd card and then run ClockworkMod.
See but dun follow the cwm installation:
wiki点cyanogenmod点com/wiki/Motorola_Atrix_4G:_Full_Update_Guide
Your Atrix and mine are probably in stage 1.
Last night I tried to follow the old instruction in the link above to flash cwm.
But the fastest manner to run cwm is by installing Rom Manager instead.
Rom manager is super easy to use and I manage to get it to flash cwm in my Atrix. With cwm running, I boot from it and get cwm to flash Gapps in my Atrix.
Now I got cwm & gapps both running very well.
All my gmail, gPlay, gCalendar, gMap..... running quite well.
The next step I can make is to save cm9 zip files in the root of sd card and run cwm to flash it.
I am currently stuck like you. I wan to flash ics thru cm9 but worrying bricking Atrix. Moto may come up with ics for atrix real soon so I dun know if I want to wait.
Good luck
Sounds like you are on the right track. Once you have cwm flashed you can reboot, hold the volume down rocker as the phone reboots. Once you see another option under the "unlocked" text you can then tap the volume down rocker until you get to the recovery option, then tap the volume up rocker. This will bring up a whole new menu that you can use to clear cache, Dalvik cache and factory wipe.
When I flashed my first ROM I was very nervous that I was going to ruin my phone, but I have flash many ROMs since then some with gapps included and some that require you to flash gapps seperate. I have enjoyed many ROMs and have not run into any problems I couldn't fix by rebooting into recovery.
Good luck and enjoy the ROMs of your choice!
Hey guys!
Thanks for all your help!
First, I forgot to say, it's not the first time doing this stuff xD
It's my third android phone, so all is very similar to the Defy, but still I like to ask one time too often instead of crying about a bricked phone =)
What I have done now: Because bootloader was already open and cwm was already insalled, I could skip the hardest part and jumped right into flashing.
Ok, not really, because I updated cwm to romracers version (not really necessary, but everyone suggested it...)
Right now I'm running Neutrinos CM7 mod because other mods gave me randome reboots
First problem was: My Radio version does not work with this rom! "About phone" says "Baseband unknown".
I went crazy bcs I thought I got a broken phone from taobao, but smart as I am (hrhr) I made a nandroid backup before, flashed it back, and tadaa, with the old backup I had network connection....
So I googled a little more and found out about the Radio-Thread here.
Now I'm testing all the radios to ind the best one...
Good thing is, network connection is working now, bad thing is, it sucks my battery dry like a h**ker that gets too much money
@qqqqaa: does your radio version work with CM9?
Maybe I should try yours...
Can any of you with the Chinese ROM confirm that call recording works on your phone and if possible, do share a dump of your ROM.
DISCLAIMER: I NOR ANY ONE ELSE ASSUMES RESPONSIBILITY IF YOU BREAK YOUR DEVICE.
THIS DID WORK FOR MY STRAITTALK XT555C USING .67D FIRMWARE. ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP!
update
I am rooted thanks to rootdefyxt320.... its a funny process as it seems i got an asian version of the
app but it worked flawlessly. after poking around to guess the right button to click the device restarted and (pc-win7)
showed asian language and big bold letters showed xt555c. clicked green buttonto "close" and unplugged device. i got a version
of what looked like su.apk in an asian language. then get supersu from market to "replace su app" (in super su settings)
reboot asian su gone and now need to move supersu to system app then all good!
status of su proven by:
terminal emulator ($ + SU = #)
for safety reasons you can know all went well by typing:
$ su
# reboot
if the device reboots then you are good as power off is not a su command but reboot option is
titanium backup "status on splash screen confirmed su access" "removed facebook app" can some one upload the
non-updated face book app so i can put it back and get a full blown firmware back up. as i had to confirm this working
the quickes thing i could think of to verify was dumping facebook app
busy box "confirmed su is installed and busy box did update sucessfully"
supersu "kept disappearing, used link2sd to move superuser to system fixed this" During this time i still had su access
but with the "lack" of supersu it would not prompt me for su access but would grant access automatically.
dont know why but supersu would not show in titanium untill i did this.
I just have to say with so many things going on in life breaking my little phone from its cage has made me smile!
thanks again rootdefyxt320!
If this has helped you please scroll down and hit the "thanks" button for user rootdefyxt320 as i did. wish they had a thanks a million button
ORIGINAL POST:
PREVIOUSE POST AND POSSIBLY DATED INFO FOLLOWS:
First off I am requesting any developers help to figure this out, I want to thank in advance the
awesome devs and community of xda as im sure there is some one out there way more
knowledgeable than I willing to help. Simply put please educate me as im willing to learn what it
takes to complete this task sucessfully.
Hello, today I have a whole slew of questions about the Motorola Defy XT, XT555c to be exact.
It seems as though there are many different defy's out there and this on has the least amound
of development. I am attempting to get all the info in to one place as searching for this device
seems a bit messy. I will update this thread as info is found\refound and brought to my attention.
Enough of the mumbo jumbo, off to the good stuff...
Chances are if you arte reading this you already know that all the "normal" methods of rooting
android (z4root, super1click, Framaroot, republic wirless .apk root) does not work for this device with 2.3.7
as all known exploits had been "fixed" by motorola. This is the first device of about 20 android
devices that I havent been able to research and root! Im creating this post in hopes to grab the
attention of any developer willing to help.
My PC configurations:
windows 7 x64 & x86, moto drivers
ubuntu 12.04 x86 installed to and running from 16gb usb thumb drive, moto rules created a.k.a. drivers for linux
adb installed on all of the above systems
Device specifics:
model xt555c
android ver. 2.3.7
baseband ver. pcr
kernel ver. Apps_2.6.38.6-perf
build no. 1_67d_1014
NOTES:
*ubuntu stick was created soley for the root procetures for the xt555c
*I preferr to use ubuntu but if nesasary I have windows at my disposal
*both win and ubuntu speak to the device flawlessly (ADB)
*used adm to grab logcat @ boot (see attached)
*need to grab full backup of system software because you know how this sort of
thing goes. Any suggestions?
*this particular defy in question was apparently manufactured/released in 2012
*This particular defy XT555C is also called other model numbers on various sites.
It has become increasingly difficult to find out witch defy I hold in my hand due to
conflicting specs\models on various other sites. some are dualband and others not.
some do not have a front camera, some state 800mhz processor while others state 1ghz
but all are called "defy XT"
Questions I have currently are:
Is this device downgradeable? possible solution (use google translate) www.android-hilfe.de/2729429-post10.html
Are the firmwares from any other defys capable of running on this device?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1827338
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1542956
**Zeroemd: "Also the only difference between xt555c and xt535 is the region and the CDMA for US and GSM for Asia"
If any one can confirm this then it may be possible to use other firmwares from other models of defy and simply
have issues to hammer out with the "modem/radio" . I remember from the early cyanogen days and the MT3G you could
flash any number of builds and combine those builds with different radio versions and get insanely different results but as
i remember it if you ended up with the wrong radio all else would work you simply would have bad/low cellular signal, lacking
3g/data or no signal at all.
Here is the terminal output that I get when attemting any thing that requires su\root:
[email protected]:~$ adb devices
List of devices attached
TBEN1238500049 device
[email protected]:~$ sudo -s
[sudo] password for reemo:
bash: PATH=${/home/reemo/Desktop/android-sdk-linux/tools}:~/android-sdk-linux/tools: bad substitution
bash: PATH=${/home/reemo/Desktop/android-sdk-linux/tools}:~/android-sdk-linux/platform-tools: bad substitution
[email protected]:~# adb shell
$ adb reboot
adb: permission denied
$
The info found at the following link has led me to feel the need to investigate the boot
process to resolve rooting method hints the boot-logcat
http://www.apriorit.com/our-company/dev-blog/255-android-rooting
The logcat from ADM taken from "phone off" to "fully booted @ lock screen" has been
attached along with screen shots of my device info
I am aware of the "bad substitution" error. due to laziness and sligh bad config Ive just been "cd"ing to the directory
more info to thumb through and organize at a later date
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Motorola_Defy#Rooting_DEFY.2B_Bootloader_v7
I have included pictures of my lense as I am colorblind, red green colorblind to be exact. ive showed the pictures on
line in hopes some one could tell me what color mine is... every one seems to tell me the lense is black. if any one
wants to look at these and tell me it would be greatly appreciated.
Good Luck
I wish you good luck and thank you for trying to give this great little phone some well deserved attention.

I'm awaiting reply from one of the defy devs in hopes to get some one to help me make light of things. I was
reading that apparently gingerbreak has been patched on a lot of devices as it its a security vulnerability. There
are other people/devices with our dreaded "gingerbreak proof" issue. Either I/we figure it out, some one hears
our cries for help or its exploited for another device and ported to ours using other exploits not found to date.
Wish I had better news.
Developers please tell me if there its more info needed to start this rooting process. I'm sure finding testers
won't be an issue a time goes by people will lay there defys to the side along with Motorola for devices we can
do what we want with. Thanks in advance.

I'm partially color blind, red green to be exact so i have to find alternate ways
to find out which lense i have. as for framroot i jumped up and tried it and in seconds i get an error#5.
dev for that package of exploits states
"What means error# on result ?
All errors less or equal to 9 mean your device is not vulnerable"

I suggested it because it made rooting easier on complicated devices, (like a Droid pro with an Argentinian SBF, which requires ubuntu to root.)
Check the framaroot post maybe you will find something or try to contact its creator.
If i find anything I will PM you.

stubborn little phone, thanks for the tip though
@reemobeens19 Please do the Canadian XT615 Root Method to root your phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=44058727&postcount=92
If you want the English version of the Canadian XT615 root program, refer to this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=45212970&postcount=102
The Canadian XT615 Root Program
@reemobeens19 This Canadian XT615 Root program can root all Motorola Android Phones on Android 2.3.7 and it will install a Chinese SuperUser on your device.
How to check for root after using the root program. Please use cmd to type in these commands
Code:
adb shell
Code:
su
and it should give you a # sign in cmd.
After that you can update to another SuperUser program from the Play Store such as Superuser by ChainsDD, SuperSU by Chainfire or SuperUser by koush.
@reemobeens19 Does your Defy XT have fastboot mode? I'm going to help you to port CWM.
You can test it by typing this command in cmd
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
If your phone reboots normally means your phone doesn't have fastboot mode . If your phone gets stuck on a screen with the M logo then you have fastboot mode

Motorola only supports a few devices and the odds that this one will ever be supported
are slim as it is not a "main stream" device. One thing i hate messing with are
bootloaders. Im currenty awaiting proven methods my self before attempting to
heavily modify this device. ive been playing a lot with linux and have "broken" my pc
numerous times in the past few weeks trying to learn more about under the hood unix.
one thing i cant seem to "fix" rather than reinstall is the bootloader when its broken im
hoping it will help me better understand what is going on in side this little android. if there are proven methods
im willing to try them as i took the plunge and rooted. does any one have any advice for this?
@reemobeens19 Can you please provide me your build.prop and flex.prop please so I can obtain the original firmware for you? Thanks
I just bought a xt555c from straight talk and tried both the Asian and English programs posted on this thread but neither of them worked for me. At the risk of sounding dumb did I miss something. I turned on the phone, enabled USB debugging and clicked the green button. It recognized my device as an xt555c, said rooting. Then my phone rebooted and the program said try again... Can anyone tell me where I went wrong? Thanks in advance.

Ok, first uninstall all Motorola Drivers the reinstall them
Download the zip file here: http://d-h.st/33x
Instructions:
1. Extract the zip file. I have included both 32 bit and 64 bit drivers.
2. Then uninstall all Motorola Drivers and reinstall them.
3. Then uninstall the VRoot program and reinstall the VRoot program.
4. Then retry the VRoot program and tell me your outcome.
