Screen Mirroring with All Share Cast Dongle - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
I am having hell of a time with my new All Share Cast Dongle.
It plugs in etc... and turns on, but on the S5, it says a "A Screen Mirroring update has been downloaded. Restart Screen Mirroring to update".
Nothing I do can it to work, I have unnstalled all allshare cast related items, restarted. eberything except a factory reset. the Screen mirroring simply DOES NOT WORK!!!
THanks!

Did you flash with the latest firmware? I did, just wondering if it s an issue with the latest. ...

For the record
Hi All,
Just for those googlers who come across this.
I managed to solve it.
For some (what ever?) reason it didnt work when connecting to my HDMI monitor. So when I got home I connected the dongle to my TV and it came up on the screen with the colourful dongle welcome page saying 'Please connect a device'.
I started the screen mirroring app on the phone (settings > Screen Mirroring > On, selected dongle).
Then the phone uploaded a new firmware to the dongle which took a minute or two. Once this happend the dongle restarted and all was OK.
When connected to the monitor at the office, the dongle firmware update got to 27% (on the phone display - there was nothing on my monitor), then it stopped.
So, Connect to a TV. Start screen mirroring and let it update the dongle. Works GREAT!

I have it connected to my TV but I only get the same message to turn off screen mirroring. Is anyone trying this rooted or stock?
OK, I had to first force stop the allshare cast SW download then uninstall it. I was then able to connect to the dongle and it downloaded the software again. All is good now. I also found out that it will not work with certain custom kernels, so please ensure that you are using stock kernel or it will not connect to the dongle.

Well that defeats purpose for me. I need a kernel that allows SELinux to be permissive so it can send bluetooth commands to appradio.

Let me check with another custom kernel to make sure that it was not just the one that I had at the time. I will let you know later on tonight. What ROM are you running and what software version?

Will N4 connect with PTV3000

i know N4 is miracast certified, and pTV3000 is a miracast receiver
does anyone know if someone has actually made this connection happen (demo units etc..)
Thanks!
Miracast receiver -> miracast certified.
Yes, wheels do go on cars.
Android central wrote in N4 review that they didn't get it to work with Netgear Push2TV. I have no idea if it was PTV3000 or some earlier model.
It does not work with the Netgear PTV3000 (Probably because it is only pre-standards compliant).
Netgear is claiming they have an update coming out though to fix it though.

haha too bad your jackass smart reply doesn't hold, since the other 2 members nicely pointed out that yes, it does NOT work

Anyone know of any Miracast receivers that do work with the Nexus 4?
Don't feel like getting buying the $30 Slimport HDMI cable, would rather just put that money towards a Miracast box of some kind.

Thanks for your update. I just get Netgear PTV3000's V2.1.1 firmware update from Netgear Forum. I am not sure whether it can make your Nexus 4 get supported.

I just tried this update, my shipped firmware was 1.0.2 Went fine, but N4 still cannot connect. Phone sees the adapter, but when you tap on it to connect, says "Connecting" and never connects.
Someone know when will be firmware update for PTV3000 to support Miracast?

Progress! 2.1.4 almost connected - ended up with HDCP authentication error. 2.1.5 works. But there is a lot to be desired! There is noticeable lag between what happens on screen and on the TV - maybe around 0.5 seconds and it gets worse if you are more than couple of meters away from the receiver. There are often artifacts showing up, video works but is choppy, audio goes out of sync (audio also plays on the TV).
But good to show pictures and slideshows on TV wireless. But not really HDMI cable replacement. Battery consumption (on phone) is considerable too. Battery shattered down by 20% down in under 10 minutes.

Thanks for posting these. I tried 2.1.5 first, but it had the HDCP authentication error.
2.1.4 works though! However video is constantly choppy and occasionally blocky.
2.1.5 Killed WiDi
2.1.1
Finds the Push2TV adapter, but cannot connect. Nexus 4 can find the Push2TV adapter but cannot connect either.
2.1.4
WiDi fails to connect and HDCP authentication fails for Miracast.
2.1.5
WiDi doesn't connect but Miracast works pretty well. Video and audio is a little choppy though.
For now using stock is best for WiDi and 2.1.5 is the best for Miracast. Anyone else have any news or new firmwares?
Has there been any progress with this?

My Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 was able to revert my PTV3K's firmware back to version 1.0.13 from version 2.1.5. If you need to revert back to stock, that is an option.
(edit) After it received the Jelly Bean update, it shows this screen upon connecting:
Hitting "OK" will flash the 1.0.13 firmware to the PTV3K.
This is how I get it to work consistently without the HDCP error..
Make sure the monitor is off before plugging in the usb cable to the PTV. So each time you turn off your monitor, you also need to unplug your PTV.

From PTV3000 guide:
9. How can I update my Push2TV?
a. Use your computer and navigate to http://www.netgear.com/stream to check
for and download the latest firmware.
b. Press the Wireless Display Mode / WPS button on the side of the
Push2TV unit for more than 5 seconds.
c. Using the wireless network manager utility on your computer, search for the
Push2TV wireless network name (SSID) and connect.
d. Open a browser on your computer, and you are automatically redirected to
the Push2TV update page. If you are not automatically redirected, type
http://192.168.3.1/ into the browser address bar.
e. Follow the steps on the web page to upload the firmware image you
downloaded in step a and complete the installation.

There is a 2.2.2 firmware floating around for the PTV3000. I can't comment on the Nexus 4 specifically, but it does work with the Galaxy S3 and the AllShare Cast app on it. I have had great performance with it, especially compared to the 2.1.5 that was just absolutely horrible. I would be interested to know what someone with a Nexus 4 and the 2.2.2 experienced as well.
Also, in the 2.2.2 update, it looks as tho the button on the side for switching between WiDi and Miracast isn't used for switching modes anymore and the device is always "listening" for both types of connections. The screen doesn't reference WiDi or Miracast now, just basically says"connect your device".
Thanks

Sorry, but have to ask - does your TV support it? What is the model#?
If it does, you should be able to enable it then just turn on screen mirroring on your phone.
My Samsung TV doesn't have the option for screen mirroring built in, but I accomplish it with what I do have - the MHL HDMI dongle and the allshare cast. One is a direct connection, the other is wireless.
I'd imagine it works the same as the allshare cast hub. When it's on,all I need to do is turn on screen mirroring from the notification window and it automatically connects to it. If you share the model of your TV myself or someone can look it up. Or you can check out your manual first then go from there. Without knowing what you have, here's an example :
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/howtoguide/N0000058/6528/41579/UN55ES6500FXZA
AFAIK it has to be a newer model for the mirroring without the dongles. : http://developer.samsung.com/forum/thread/is-it-possible-to-test-screencast-using-eclipse-simulator/141/219986#post1

LN32D403E4DXZA specifications don't indicate built-in support for miracast. So you would need to get either the Allshare cast, or another miracast adapter like the netgear push2tv (PTV3000 or PTV2000) to be able to mirror your phone to the TV.

Certainly.
Personally, I find that short cable inconvenient, but that's just me. If the goal is to play movies on the phone and mirror to TV, sure. But I end up wanting to share pictures or short videos taken on my phone, on the big screen. For that, I would prefer the ability to have the phone with me (on the couch) and not have to stand next to the TV with that short cable connecting it to my phone.
For now, I'm using the Roku (juice channel) to share local video/pictures, but is not the best option because it doesn't let me share my pictures/videos from dropbox or other online storage sites. I have to download it to my phone first.
Waiting for the wireless mirroring options to drop further in cost

For sure! I prefer not to have it directly connected -but was more for the sake of informing the OP.
I use the mhl dongle it like you mentioned, if we're watching something that doesn't require me to babysit the phone lol.
I got lucky when Samsung was having a 50% off promo and I picked up the allshare hub then. None of my TV's are "smart" TV's, so it works well for my "dumb" TV's.
Also, a while back, I picked up a pogoplug for under $20 and I use that for storage- kinda like a "mini NAS". You can hook up usb drives (flash or harddrives) to it and right now I basically have a couple of flash drives to serve the media to phone, so it's cool for mirroring or just while out and about. Pretty cheap, quick and doesn't require much effort so it was well worth it for me...it comes in handy because it's set up so I don't have to do any transcoding for videos - I just use the mxplayer app and the phone does the rest.
There is one thing I have yet to try, just for curiosity's sake - to run xbmc on my S4 while it's connected to the TV with the wired MHL dongle, then use my wife's phone or my tablet with an xbmc remote app to connect to and control the videos to play from the s4 while mirrored...
That's cool with the roku. Have you tried just using something like couchyplay http://www.roku.com/channels/#!details/19661/couchy-play
or rodropbox http://www.roku.com/channels/#!details/18042/rodropbox so you don't have to d/l to your phone from dropbox?
You could even use something like the cloudpipes app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.maximussoft.cloudpipes&hl=en to automate moving/copying files back and forth on dropbox while you're not using your phone (at work or sleeping ..or whatever)

I have one of these - Samsung Wi-Fi Display Hub for Galaxy S2/S3/S4/Note 2 - Black . Works well but I did find you need "Official" statuses in both bootloader and settings to work with my Note 10.1. Haven't tried with my S4... This is for total screen mirrorring. It shows everything I do on my tablet on screen...
The DLNA sharing is only for movies, music and pictures...
I have a Samsung TV and the DLNA works well...
My advice, look at the reviews and buy the cheapest if the TV you have doesn't support DLNA... I'd check that 1st...

So that means even if I but the hub it won't work for me because I using omega rom?

Probably not though I have read in the note 10.1 forum of it working. Not to my experience however. I use a rooted stock rom on my SG Note 10.1 I have flashed using Mobile ODIN. I run triangle away 1st and get all Status's "Official" with 0 flash count but when I tried flashing other roms it went ass up... You might be able to try the workaround on triangle away but that requires the paid app...

Thanks. I can buy the app, that's no problem.
So all I need to get for screen mirroring is the hub not the dongle right?
Yep, the hub mirrors everything but the dongle actually says its a DLNA dongle...

Purchase the allshare dongle, plug in to available hdmi slot, turn on your screen mirroring on your phone, dongle should be recognized...If you get error msg that cannot connect or find the dongle, make sure you have the latest firmware update for the allshare dongle

Nexus 6P and miracast/mirroring

Does anyone know a way for me to mirror my screen of this phone without WiFi?
The phone apparently does not support HDMI over USB-C and I need to find a way to mirror my screen via HDMI.
My car has an HDMI input to the head unit and it was just recently found to have a bypass in it so that the HDMI will work while driving. I do not want to watch videos while driving but I do want Google maps/waze to be shown on my head unit screen as the car's standard navi is terrible.
I have tried using Chromecast but the Chromecast does not work unless the car is connected to WiFi. Using my phone as a hotspot was a workaround up until an update to the Chromecast was said to cause it to crash. So this option is out.
What I would like to do ideally is buy an HDMI miracast dongle to mirror the screen as it uses WiFi direct. If I go into settings>WiFi>menu>advanced I see the WiFi direct menu but it looks incomplete.
I did some searching and saw that there was a way to edit the build.prop on the nexus 6 to allow for miracast.
Does anyone know if this is possible with the 6p and do you think it would be a viable option?
I have asked the question about the build.prop modification, but have not got any response
I can use TCL_nscreen Pro, but I would like a stock option
It is exactly the same for the Nexus 6 as it was for the 6. There are a couple of threads in here already on it, but essentially it is the build.prop modification and then after a reboot, set the allow wifi setting in the setting of the cast screen.
persist.debug.wfd.enable=1
Chromecast can be made to work again by downgrading to the previous version and then switching off auto update.
You can cast your screen while using the hotspot feature. You have to cast using the cast button in the quick settings. I had to use a tablet to configure the chromecast the first time so it knows what wifi network to use (Which is the hotspot)
Has anyone successfully got this working? I have modified my build.prop without success. Screen mirroring to my Fire stick is essential to me.
Yes, I am using Miracast. As well as modifying the file, have you rebooted and in the cast screen gone into options and selected the wireless option?

It's working now. Thanks
Good to hear
What do you need to add/edit on your build.prop to use Miracast? Just add "persist.debug.wfd.enable=1" ?

Yes. I just added it to the last line.
Will miricast work through apps like YouTube or play movies? Or have they disabled it system wide?

Does it screw up use of Chromecast like the poster above implied?

System wide, only casting through Chromecast will work by default.

Chromecast still worked for me. I just switched to Chroma, which has it built in. Pure Nexus did not.

The mic problems I see reported in the thread make me a bit nervous, but it looks like a great ROM otherwise.

The rom is legendary!
Hey guys. I am interested in casting from 6P. I have looked into casting using Chromecast and although i have all the equipment to set up today, I am a bit concerned about the casting dropping out if I were to lose data momentarily (BIG CONCERN). As such, before I install chromecast in my car (using with appradio) only to have to rip it out later, I would like to explore miracast. Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced miracast device I can purchase (say from amazon or wherever) to cast my 6P? I understand its easier to set up and does not require data to mirror.
Thanks

You need a second phone in order to use Chromecast unless you use an older version that lets you trick it into streaming from the same phone that is the WiFI hotspot. Google didn't not include Miracast by default so you need to enable it in the build.prop file. The Microsoft Miracast dongle works fine for me and has been rated pretty well. Regardless, you don't need a data connection for either if you are not streaming something from the internet, so I don't know what you're expecting to be different between the two options.

Wait. I thought that was the main reason why people are opting for using miracast devices and not chromecast. I have the original chromecast (not the newer ones). But I was under the impression that if you lose your data connection (from carrier), your wifi hotspot goes down, and your phone is no longer connected to the chromecast. I am fine not being able to stream content from the internet, as long as my phone is still mirroring to chromecast and is visible on what I have connected chromecast to. I have tons of content on my device that I can cast, I just need to be able to mirror if my data connection on the 6P goes out. Please confirm because this changes everything. Sounds like if I have the original chromecast there is not much difference between it an miracast devices.

I am talking about the Chromecast application that needs to be an old version, not the device. Otherwise, you need a second phone. I don't know if the mobile hotspot dies when you lose 4G even if you aren't using Internet directly, sorry. I didn't think it would, but I've never had the experience to be able to answer affirmatively. Miracast would be your choice if that is what happens, but again you need to edit the build.prop for the Nexus 6P to make it work with Miracast. Dimming the screen is also going to be an issue (the device is AMOLED so screen off programs will not work) in order to maintain a charge, so you should look into that before purchase as well.

LG V20 and Miracast problems

I can't get my LG V20 to connect to any of my Miracast enabled devices. I have a LG WebOS TV and a LG PH150G Projector and can't get either one to connect. On the Projector, the phone will find it just fine, but when it connects the projector will get stick at Signal Detection. On the LG WebOS TV it will just get stuck on connecting. Any solutions?
SOLVED for me at least! It is a conflict with the App 'AllCast' by clockworkMod. Once I uninstalled the app Miracast works!
I had the same problem trying to get the V20 to connect to a Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter. Suggestions would be appreciated!
That's odd. I have a 4k tv with chromecast integrated and also have an ezcast 4k dongle and both of them allow me to use DLNA and also screen mirroring. Currently using Weta Rom.

I think I can solve this one for u. Go into wifi settings and forget your home network(s). Restart phone. Now try to connect to dongle by selecting screen sharing from settings. Let me know. It always works for me

Tried your suggestions, but they didn't work. I am using the Tmobile variant of this device with the Dec. patch update.

I had trouble with miracast too a few months back. Gave up and just used smart share to watch my movies on my phone. I could look into it again and see if I can figure it out.
Edit.. Just hooked up fine first try. Mines not a webos but it is an lg 3d smart tv.

What version of the phone do you have (Carrier)? I have tried to connect to 4 different TV's and Miracast devices without success.
I just tried using Miracast in 'Safe Mode' and it almost works, The status bar changes to blue, and my projector now gets to starting stream, but eventually disconnects.

T-Mobile. I'm on a custom rom but don't thik that is the issue. Have you factory reset your phone yet? I know no one likes doing that, but might solve your issue. It's definitely the phone though and not your other devices. I know the first time I connect it makes me enter in a code from the tv, but after that it remembers the connection. Try going into your tv menu and see if you can connect from the tv to phone side as opposed to phone to tv.. Should have a menu option for it on all your lg devices that are miracast equipped.
Ok never mind saw you fixed it.
