I'd definitely pitch in on a bounty for bootloader.
We've had some pretty talented devs give it a go in the past though.
You would have to start by talking to geohot first of all and then contact mods.
Eclipsed Note 3
It would be awesome if he could exploit samsungs bootloader, but the comment of devs have tried in the past is wrong, maybe not the note 3, but the s4 is still being worked on by great devs like @Surge1223 and others, if an exploit is found for one of us, it will likely work for all of us (maybe requiring a little more tinkering) so if @geohot is interested, then thats a huge confedence boost, as he has amazed me more than once over the years, kind of hoping he is going to start android hacking more now lol anyway hope is always here at xda

Not sure if this will work for the note 3, but ive posted it in the S5 thread as well, want to get the word around for more devs to look at, looks useful

If you're on NC4 official, you can only install roms also based on NC4. Right now, there aren't any.

I rooted my device a few weeks ago, and 4.3 released earlier, so I completely uninstalled root, through my superuser app. 4.3 downloads, and when it came time to install, it went through the install process in about five seconds, and booted up normally. I have an unlocked bootloader, I need help changing it back to normal? Is there a way?

If you are currently fully rooted and wish to stay that way then you NEVER want to update through your carrier! If you do take the update, your phone will be permanently un-rooted! You should always wait for the developer community to take a look at it and determine what the pit-falls may be and to produce alternatives (update based rooted roms).
And before everyone starts jumping on me for using the word permanently; My feeling is that until proven otherwise, it should always be presumed that the affect will be permanent to emphasize the potential severity of the action. I would be happy to be proven wrong!

Im afraid your statement has already been proven to be wrong. He said he is MDB and the update he is getting would be to MF3 and there is already a root method for that firmware. Permanent is a strong word, especially given the abilities of the developers on XDA, Temporarily is a much more adequate word to use, which would the case for 4.3 MJ9, TEMPORARILY, there isn't a proven SAFE root method....as of yet.

I think you missed my point. Yes, there is a a way to root MF3 but not a clean bootloader/recovery replacement. The reason for using the word permanent was to emphasize that there are NO guarantees of root for those who choose to update from the carrier as soon as an update becomes available. I agree that there is a high likelihood that some form of root will be made available but until that method is discovered the user should assume he/she will be stuck with what they have. An excellent example of such is exactly the MF3 release he is talking about. If you receive the MF3 OTA you no longer have an unlocked bootloader available and if you desire running another rom you are stuck with a kludge solution, not a clean one.

I'm not real sure what you mean by a "kludge solution", but I'm on MF3 with Safestrap and there are quite a few ROMS available to flash and some of them are as good as any I've run before (excluding none). I would be willing to bet that 4.3 will have root and ROMS available in a very short time. Im quite certian that Hashcode will have Safestrapup and running on 4.3 before ya know it and if not, I'm happy with the device and options I have with it as it is now. I do agree that anyone who chooses to take the update right away, and then expect all the development options, are wishful thinking, and/or not doing their research
MDB,MDL,MF3,MJ9
The above list has always been bootloader locked.yes rooted minus the new MJ9 and a "work around" to flashing roms.
I have faith that one day someone will crack the lock, just not before I switch to a Nexus 5

I've read in a couple places of people having success taking the the NC4 OTA on their stock rooted device with SU Survival Mode on and being able to keep root after the update.
I was just wondering if any has tried that and if they were successful or not, thanks!
I know some people just want root, but really what other point is there to doing this?? This sounds just like what happened over in the S3 forum when people who wanted 4.3 ota so desperately they ended up getting hard bricks and relocked bootloaders.
Taking the OTA, you are giving up kernel modules on NC2 and the ability to go back to MJE if you need. For anyone that missed it, read this thread about why NC2 is unique. Just flash NC4 baseband (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52633373&postcount=391), and stay on NC2 til devs cook up a safe NC4 to use. What Im doing if you ever want to use kexec in the future for aosp roms when it comes
I successfully did this.
I had to Odin back to stock 4.3 because OTA would fail, but once that finished and re-rooted with Kingo I took the update in survival mode retaining root.
I'm one of those just wanting root.

Jeez I shouldnt have even said anything about being able to take the OTA w/survival mode.
Theres nothing wrong with taking it if you guys have no issue with not being able to change kernels in the future or downgrade with Odin. If you screw up the survival process though and lose root, beans has already said it will probably be a very long time til there will be an exploit

Theres nothing on NC4 coming from NC2 worth losing that imo it shouldnt be long til you see NC4 roms in the dev section pre rooted. But its your phone, and we all take our own risks.

This thread already exists in Q&A and was simply trying to save some headaches now as well as down the road for those who don't know...
again if all you care about is root on your phone... nobody is stopping you from the attempt
There is already a thread for this:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2750875
Thread closed and moved to Q and A like its supposed to be.
I do not have an S4. I ordered one from Swappa expecting to use it on Straighttalks LTE service. Already ordered the sim card as well.
However, of course right after this I started digging a bit more and found that it is currently impossible to root an S4 after it's updated to 4.4.2. The one I ordered is updated.
I'd highly prefer to have root. I don't "need" it. But, if I can achieve root without much issue I'd prefer it.
I did find a few posts about using something called Odin and safestrap. I didn't read fully through them yet. But, I'm curious if doing these methods actually work for downgrading? If they do what are the "limits"? Can I put any Rom in or is it only a specific Rom?
Will I likely run into issues doing this while using the ST LTE settings?
Just trying to cover my bases before I start on this phone. It's not here yet and I'd rather resell it if I'm better off doing that.
I am curious what would be suggested purchase for the ST LTE service since it seems the AT&T S4 is out of question if I can't even update the damn thing. I'd rather be capable of updates and having root. I don't care about being able to do Roms and stuff.
Dude, you can have root on any firmware but it may not be easy to get it. Do you know what firmware your device will have?
Odin flashes the stock firmware onto your device. Safestrap is a custom recovery that you'll need to flash custom touch wiz roms

You can only use SafeStrap and can not flash non TW roms or custom recoveries/kernels, so CM AOSP etc

Starting to feel the same way. Flashing this sgh-i337 is turning out to be quite an infuriating ordeal. So much conflicting info. Allllll these ROMs available for S4, it seems. But they don't work because this version isn't compatible. And the Tw ones I've tried ALL DAY are not working either. Granted, I was not using SS correctly initially, but now that they are successfully loading in the stock slot are not working. Graviton never boots, stays on the ouroboros snake screen. Imperium has no data or wifi etc (i9505 rom? I tried it as it said it was verified working 9th i337. Nope. Figured it was a problem when it said i9505 on my model). Goldeneye, actually can connect, wifi etc. But when I change settings in Wanam, it does not take them (after reboot). Had all the other connectivity issues until I flashed a patch. Also, I was pretty happy to see than I could activate hotspot. But my device was nowhere to be found by other devices. Modules, kernals, patches, oh my... out of all the tutorials for S4's on the wide wide world of internets, nothing seems to fly. This must be the red headed bastard child of Android.
I know it is all user error, but can nothing be simple?
Just want a simple rom and hotspot. That looks awesome. Hrm.
About to try this GE download. GE-XXUGNG4-37.zip. I tried the later NG-8-38 version last time. And yes, I did the ST update at&t module update previously.

Currently you are good to go even on the latest NI2 update. You only need to downgrade the kernel to NCG via odin, run towel root, then reflash the newest NI2 kernel. There is a good write-up on it. Just look a few posts down.
