First, plug phone into computer, and install updater software from the phone that is on the device in 'Installer Mode'. Take the download on the PC, then follow directions below, and you can still have root after.

Hi again,
I installed the upgrade assistant in installer mode but for some reason it is not picking up the new NE9 update on my computer. See attached print screen. Very strange.. It sees the update on my phone to download though.:cyclops: Do you know why this is and how I can get it to see the update on the upgrade assistant as you mentioned?
Kind Regards
Can you explain why you want the update so bad? You do realize that rooting and accepting official otas is completely contradictory, correct? OTAs are generally what fix things like what towelroot exploits. If you accept official OTA, you will likely lose root.
But can't I just re root after the ota? I guess the reason I want the Ota because I heard of camera enhancements and stability fixes

No. OTA have patches for known security flaws as well. The flaw that towelroot relies on is closed after the new OTA. Meaning, no more root.
edit: in this case I believe folks have figured out a work around for keeping root with the update. In general though, if you value root and what it provides you do not accept official releases.

@ks3rv3rg I believe the links mentioned above provide a workaround for the Root to be kept after updating.
As for the problem nick, I can't help you there. I haven't personally take it as I see taking OTA's is silly with a rooted phone you can modify to be much more. Perhaps someone else who has done it will chime in...
Thank you both for your perspectives.. Plus, I can always just wait for a ROM that currently has the update installed.

I think you are referring to my safestrap flashable OTA zip file. I'm going to keep that one in my back pocket for the next OTA since the kernel swap worked.

I have a similar question but reversed. How do I stop it from updating and it from asking me to update? I have the free version of titanium backup and can't freeze it. Is their another way? I can't turn off SDM that runs the ota upgrade i can only force stop it.

right on, I didnt miss it I was wondering what the exact name was as thats not the exact name. also isnt that just verizons security update not the firm? or are all updates I that?

Yes, that is the name of the apk and yes, it is just the VZW security update. But I was getting prompted to update it until I froze it.
Code:
Security policy updates SPD_v2_1402_4_1
or
Code:
SDM 1.0
I ask because SDM 1.0 stopped the updates notices and removed Software from the bottom of settings. I dont want to freeze the wrong thing so the exact name is what I was going for and seems to be the first one. ty

Looks to be some type of security updates.
Just popped on mine. Installed the update.
Matches this Software Version: MMB29M.N910VVRU2CPG2
https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/samsung-galaxy-note-4-update/
Kernel 3.10.40
Android Version 6.0.1
Android Patch Level September 1,2016
Baseband Version N910VVRU2CPG2
Will this update break Foxfi for Verizon Note 4?
Anyone know if PG2 does anything to the bootloader to prevent rolling back?

It appears to be a boot.img update. Flashfire rejected it as a safe OTA and I proceeded to freeze System Updates with Titanium Backup to eliminate future notifications. A bootloader update for sure.
Hopefully someone can tell if it's locking the bootloader down to prevent downgrading or the bootloader unlock method. Is there a way to freeze the update prompts if I'm not rooted yet? Just got the phone and haven't had a chance to unlock and root this bad boy.

buy package disabler. it is well worth the $1 price tag
Use Debloater, then freeze SDM.apk.
Root not required, very easy.
No, it does not break Foxfi.
Could someone please upload the ota zip file
Could you provide more details on how to do this please? I download it and disabled the package listed in the post below yours but I still get the stupid notification to update. Thanks

I'm relatively new here, with regard to uploads. I am on a vzw Note 4, running Jasminerom 7.0, with an unlocked bootloader. I don't even have an SDM, as it wasn't present on the ROM, however I found a post for shutting off Samsung updates that required shutting off two system update modules, and one or two other software and security modules. I'm beginning to think Samsung is in collusion with the carriers to make our phones obsolete, and prevent further mods. If you let me know how and where to upload to you, I can send you the file, if you still want it.

Thank you so much, I already sold my Note 4 and got s7 edge till they release note 8.
Hey there, everybody. I'm currently running a manually odexed version of the stock N900VVRUEOF1 firmware, with bootloader unlock, TWRP 2.8.7.0, and am both rooted and running Xposed framework...
Out of nowhere, I see a long-forgotten icon, in my notification tray. It's saying there's a software update available! I wanted to make sure this wasn't some fluke (or to make sure I wasn't dreaming), so I checked out Verizon's update list.
https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/software-updates/
Lo, and behold! There's an actual, honest-to-goddess update! (Listed as: LRX21V.N900VVRSEPL1)
However, there is little to no information on what it is or does, apart from the ever-vague "latest security updates"...
Fearing a potential planned obsolescence (like the Note 7) or it wrecking my custom root/recovery/bootloader status, I haven't installed it.
I could try to unpack it all and go digging through it, but that takes way more time or energy than I can currently devote to this sort of thing...
Does anybody know what is involved with this update or have any other information as-to what it includes?

Would love to know as well. However I am not rooted nor do I want to.
I was honestly shocked when I saw the notification.
I'm tempted to go through with the update but since I like how I have my phone setup at the moment, im really hesitant to install it.
Would love to hear from anyone that has!

Thanks for the update, GoNavyMike.
That's about all I could find as well. :-/
In an effort to get a better idea of what has changed, would you have happened to have installed this? If so, would you say that there's any noticeable difference in performance or features, apart from the obvious potential app updates?
I'm all for the performance fixes and whatnot, but I really don't wanna lose root. Does this patch over current root methods, bump the Lollipop build up to 5.1 (sdk21), or anything like that? These are the kinds of things that a number of folks (myself included) are curious about. If you have updated, any insight you might provide would be very valuable!
Thanks for your time!

Was shocked to see myself.
I'm having trouble to disable the notification.
Tried using disable services from the playstore and unticking system update from Google framework also tried the Disable system updates app for rooted devices. Also the tick mark to hide notifications is grayed out on System Update in applications.
Im running Stock VRUEOF1 with TWRP and rooted.
Any suggestions?
My GF and I both have the Note 3. Mine is rooted and her's is stock, so I told her to go ahead and install it. Yeah, it's just a security update. I decided to update mine and it fails with the 402 error. Likely because I'm rooted. I need to look into deleting the update and blocking OTA.
BEWARE
Hey so I've got the 900v and it was rooted stock deodexed with a few rom toolbox tweaks. After the updated I was soft bricked - had to revert back to factory with Odin - no fun.

Thanks for the heads-up. This is the sort of thing I was worried about. Firstly, whether being rooted would mess with the update (perhaps it's just a partial update...?) and secondly, that I'd be able to keep root.
Assuming that your GF is okay with you borrowing her phone (which IS a rather large assumption, for nearly anybody), would you mind trying to see if current rooting methods still work for the new update?

I'm sorry to hear about having to do the full backup and restore... According to what yourself and xm41907 have posted, it apparently checks for full stock. Not sure how you managed to get as far as you did, but at least we know that this update doesn't play nice with rooted phones.
Performance/security improvements are great and all, but there are plenty of Xposed mods and manual tweaks to take care of that-- as long as there's still root.
If there's anybody who doesn't care whether they have root or not, I'd love to hear if current rooting methods still work after the new update, or if this update patches over or current for exploits.
Disclaimer: If you update, you do so at your own risk. However, we'd love to hear more about the details and any root-related insight.
Thanks, everybody!

I can ask if she is ok attempting root. I've been out of it since the Verizon Note 3 first got root capability. This brought me back to it seeing the bootloader can be unlocked and roms put on. I'm jazzed to try AryaMod !
I'm worried about what specifically it means by "Security Updates". I'm still on the OLD unlimited data plan. Because of this, I have to use FoxFi to tether as Verizon doesn't allow it. I'm worried this update may block it.
Can anyone confirm FoxFi still bypasses Verizon's tethering check post update? My Note 3 is totally stock, not rooted, and updated to the last patch(before this one).
Thanks!

Thanks everyone for your continued feedback about this update. I am still clinging on to my Note 3. This is most certainly my last subsidized phone on VZW with my UDP.
In any event, I was just as shocked as you guys to see the system update notification. I went straight to Tibackup and froze the "System updates" app, which has tamed the notifications.
I did the update 2 days ago on my non-rooted note 3.
Everything is pretty much the same I dont notice any difference really.
Only thing is it seems my battery life has become worse.

Update for everybody with the Note 3 I don't know if it's coincidence or not after updating but when I'm in the YouTube app and have my charger connected to my phone it will say dock is connected really quick and then disappear it will probably do this two or three times a day just wanted to throw this out there and let people know that there might be a bug in the update I will check my USB port and see if it's clean and not damaged

Yes I tried it but I don't know which app or script has to be disabled.
Update: Using Package Disabler Pro freezes various apps then the next 48 hours I dont recieve any notifications to software updates. In reality, I still dont know which one of the apps prevents the update. The freeze apps are:
AT&T Remote Support
Backup and Restore Manager
ConfigUpdater
DiagMonAgent
Nearby Service
In addition to others such as Direct TV and bloatwares from AT&T that have nothing to do with the software update.
