I hope you will be patient with my somewhat nooby questions. I am just getting started with Android (at the age of 60) but have many years of PC experience.
I have a Galaxy Note III (SM-N900 hlte) and I am researching on backup/restore methods. I hope to be able to use the following pair of apps: 'Online Nandroid' and 'Nandroid Manager' to achieve what I desire. However, my confidence is still not that high on whether my thinking is correct.
I have done a Nandroid backup with Online Nanadroid, and I assume that I should be able to restore that backup using Nandroid Manager after, for example, flashing some other ROM to my phone.
Is my thinking correct? Or, can you point me in the right direction, please?
Thanks in advance for any help that you can give.

Yes. But you can also nandroid backup using CWM before you flash the rom. Save the nandroid backup to your pc and flash your roms.

Hey guys, I'd first like to thank everyone posting guides on the forums, has made my job a lot easier. I'm currently in the middle of trying to root my telus hero with the gold card method. I made the gold card, i think anyways, but before i go ahead and run the RUU file to downgrade, I want to make a nandroid backup of my phone. I downloaded the recovery image which is supposed to have nandroid v2.2 in it, but I'm not to sure how exactly to use it... I'm kind of a reallllly big nub.

From my understanding, as I saw it, I believe that the RUU's are safe, since they're HTC approved images, just that the gold card allows you to revert to a lower version of an HTC rom. Think of it as the RUU's as an official update, but an older official update, and the gold cards make your phone seen as a phone that can accept any update (new or old). So there will not be any harm when you run an official update like this unless your computer crashes midupdate or you pull the battery..or the cable gets unplugged.
Nandroid backups can be produced using the recovery image (i call it a menu since that's all you really see from it), which is covered later in a tutorial if you're reading one. This recovery image is applied after a downgrade (the downgrade gives you the ability to have root access, which is i believe necessary to get the recovery image installed), and thus be able to make these nandroid backups. The nandroid backups then get saved onto the SD card to which you can transfer to your computer for safe keeping. This ensures you can revert to an official rom with previous settings applied in case of an awry custom rom installation. The nandroid backups can also be used for nonofficial roms that you've deemed stable when you tested them, and this can be done as many times as you want.
I'm not sure if I'm entirely right, but I believe I have the gist of it. If anyone can correct me for any errors or can elaborate more, please feel free to share After all, we're all new at one point, hopefully veterans of this will chime in and allow us all to learn!
Also, welcome to the forums! Glad to have you!!
alright, so if I understand correctly, I first need to root my phone to gain root access to perform these nandroid backups?
I'm using this guide" Get started rooting Telus HERO130! (No need for QMAT!)", I'd post a URL but it seems that since I am a new member I'm not allowed to post URL's. I've gotten up to step 6. When I run that RUU file it says its going to erase everything on the phone, so I decided its probably best if I backed up my phone before I try this in the event that I mess everything up horribly.
Is this possible without having root access to use the recovery image with nandroid on it? or am I just having another noob moment?
thanks for the help!
Hello everybody
This is Siddharth from India. I am a mechanical engineer. I just purchased the Galaxy Note 2 a month back prior to this I always used an iPhone. I am new to the android platform and don't know how to flash, jailbreak or how to load different roms. I am very much tempted to install the moromoto00 theme on my phone but don't have a clue how to proceed. Frankly speaking it seems a lot more complicated than jailbreaking. Can anyone help me out??
Thanks in advance
Hello
I recommend you download and install the Note II Toolkit on your PC. You can find that here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1923956
It makes flashing and rooting very simple, and everything is explained very well.
So the first step for you now is to root your phone, install CWM and then make a Nandroid backup. The toolkit will let you do all these things very easily. :good:
Those things are necessary to do first, then after that you can start flashing ROMs and themes!
Also recommended to backup your EFS before you start flashing things. Essentially, an EFS backup backs up your IMEI code in case something goes wrong you won't be left with a device with a faulty IMEI (that would be very bad). The toolkit lets you do this as well!
Hello,
I've just gotten my Galaxy S4 GE; before I did anything to it, I was wondering if there were an official site containing the stock images, like there is for Nexus devices (https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images).
If not, how can I extract the ROM (and possibily the Recovery)?
Also, as an information, I've updated right away from 4.2.2 to 4.3 via OTA. I thought that the image might still be saved somewhere onto the memory...
Thanks for your time!
Could anybody please help or give me a hint on where to look at. I'd like to have a backup of my stock S4 GE!
Thank you.

As far as I know, there is no stock image provided for the i9505G by Samsung or Google. Since this isn't a Nexus device, it doesn't have the same access to original software images.
I think the best you can do is to root the device, boot from a custom recovery, and then do a full Nandroid back-up. This keeps the device very close to stock and you end up with a path back to this state. Here's the process I used to get to the point where I could do the Nandroid backup:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2365555
Use this version of CWM instead of the one listed--it's the newest version and supports Nandroid for the i9505G:

You can find more information in the i9505G Android development forum, particularly the sticky thread at the top.
Hello!
Thanks for the answer. I'll try to do as you said. Just two things:
- Will it be possible to run the CWM without flashing it? If yes, how?
- Is the "nanadroid backup" an option on CWM labeled with this very name? (Sorry for this qustion )
Also, by chance I found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2368121
Isn't a dump what I'm looking for? If not, what is it then?
I understand that there's no website that provides stock images (sort of stupid from Google), but can't I get the image of the 4.3 the phone downloaded when updating via OTA in any way?? Isn't it still stored somewhere for when I do a factory reset?
Thanks again!

Following the rooting process outlined only boots up your phone using CWM recovery and doesn't flash it. Just make sure that when you're done and choose to have CWM reboot your phone, if it asks you to overwrite your phone's recovery, you choose "NO".
The backup isn't called "Nandroid" in the CWM menus. You are just given options to do a backup or restore, which uses Nandroid.

That makes sense, but I haven't tried to find it.
Due to completely bricking my tablet I really need a CWM system backup from Evga or Vega tablet (Homecare won't work due to the issues that are also making it unusable with the supertool). So, if anyone has a CWM recovery and ADB installed - please, help me out! I can post instructions on how to make a backup if needed.
Can you restore your tablet via using tom's super tool utility?

Nope,I managed to brick is up to the point where even supertool won't help (In fact, I was flashing 4.3 whith it, then my computer accidentaly went off just at the point where "system" was being written.) Happily, people from other forum managed to help me with instructions and some files, but I still need a backup. I cannot get it there because most of the ones with whom I am talking there have Homecare tablet, which is incompatible with both supertool and other tablets.
So, I do beleive that question is out - nice person on 4pda.ru helped me out and did the backup. Thanks for the concern!
Hi everyone,
I tried to find a solid guide for fully backing up my system before doing anything to it to no avail. I'm currently on stock VNS-L21/VNS-L21C432B380/EMUI 5.0/Android 7.0 and plan to do the following:
1) Unlock bootloader
2) Root
3) Install Elite kernal and Arsenik rom
4) Probably some other modifications later on
I've already got some app from the store for application backup purposes but would like to have a firmware/rom/whatever backup of my current setup in order to safely restore in case anything goes wrong. I've done considerable amount of flashing with my other Android phones previously but any help would be appreciated.
Furthermore, perhaps it's worth to create a guide for this and sticky it to the top? I saw a lot of "help, bricked device" posts in this forum. I bet the guys with know-how are sick and tired of helping. Anyway, if you point me in the right direction I might as well create the guide for others.
Have a good one,
Renārs
Without root I don't think that I can make a backup . I can make apk file but not backup of data :/
