Hey all,
New here.
I got my AT&T Note 3 and I am regretting it, not to mention I also have the gear 2, which is even worse!
And then I heard Samsung is pushing Tizen on their new flagship so I guess I am done with them....
But Nexus 6 is quite some time away so I got to make the Note 3 work till then
So here I am ...
How can I find a ROM that does properly the things I want it to do? So many out there...
I want to get rid of ALL Samsung apps, ALL AT&T apps.
I want to be able to use the Pen.
I want Moto X functionality, talk to it even with screen off, or at least for Open Mic+ to work and not get mixed up with S-Voice...
How do I find this Rom???
thanks
~S
PS. Is there any chance of Androidifing my Gear 2 or just ebay it and get a Glass?
may be an asnswer but required root

2-hmmm what do you mean by use the pen my note 3 n9005 have it own pen and air command is fully working

Hello XDA!
I'm about to purchase a note 4 tomorrow from Wind mobile here in Canada. I would have preferred the nexus 6 but its just not available with wind as of yet.
So my questions regarding the note 4 are:
1) The Note 4 variant would be SM-N910W8, will it allow rooting?
2) Does Samsung allow unlocking the bootloader to install custom roms or is just a root sufficient to do that.
3) I've heard of something called knox, and how it will trigger once you root the note 4. Will this have any adverse effects on app functionality such as tap2pay etc..? I know the warranty will be void, but if something goes wrong with the device its a 50/50 chance of getting it repaired replaced.
4) My reason of preference for the N6 was stock android, is there a ROM currently that is AOSP based?
5) Is there a specific thread i can go to find roms for my variant?
5) Is there a way to return back to a virgin note 4 (unrooted, stock ROM)? And even when that is done, will knox still reflect the trigger as 0x1?
6) Lastly, i havent been much of a fan of samsung because i felt they were pushing out "cheap phones" And i must admit, ever since they came with the metal band with their alpha and note 4. Ive taken a great liking to them. So my question (I do only expect general replies) , How are you guys/girls liking your note 4 so far?
Thanks in advanced!
(P.S sorry if some of the questions are stupid, i researched and dug around as much as i can but couldnt find definitive answers)
Rooting restriction is carrier based. Some carriers lock down from rooting, others dont.
Knox is a one way trip. Once tripped it stays that way. It is effectively a fuse.
Had my N4 for two weeks and am loving it. Came from a rooted S4. Not really missing root that much. Wish I could still turn GPS on and off with Tasker and wish I had better access to the SD card. Not big deals though. There is another thread here about non-rooted solutions to many things people want root for.
Might become more an issue in a couple years if Samsung/Verizon fails to do timely updates.
Best advice to new N4 users is learn to use the S Pen. It is what makes the N4 stand out.

1. No it doesnt allow rooting. get a 910U - so far it seems the least hassle.
2. no rooting.
3. yes once you try to root your warranty is void. for all purposes assume you will never get root. then again, you dont need root. in fact having no root and knox is much better. you can have a dual personality phone which works very well.
4. irrelevant. if you get the note 4 expect to run factory.
5. no. you cant have root.
6. you need a full case to hold it. its a thin glass panel. ive got an iblason armorbox for it. also would recommend buying the wireless back and wireless chargers. cables are too much of a hassle on this phone.
My recommendation would be little biased towards Samsung given my last four phones were all galaxy. I never had to root Note 3 but I rooted Note 4 in few days of owning it. Google must have thought let's give some punch to Samsung by disabling write access to external SD giving excuse of security as Samsung is the only high end phone manufacturer that still has it. And one of the most used function that was very important to me was copying files off network share to SD which no longer worked. Only for this I rooted.
I buy Note series not for amoled or big screen or good battery life or running AOSPs. I buy for SPen. I snap, print screen, doodle and write catchy text and share, adds that special touch. And that Microsoft One Note supported inking in android, I am loving it even more.
Note 4
Thanks for the input guys, much appreciated!
While it seems most of you use the note 4 for its main purpose of being a multitasking phone. I on the other end just need the good camera, screen and battery. Everything else is gimmicks (for me atleast). However, this opinion of mine could be due to the fact that ive never owned a note before.
I did see some guides of being able to root the SM-N910W8 with CF auto root, as well as a way of bringing devices back to stock as i can see form this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/general/ref-stock-firmware-kernel-modem-recovery-t2920452
Now, is that really the case or is there somehting im not seeing?
you can NEVER bring it back to stock. the efuse blows once you root. Do NOT root a note 4 until youre familiar enough with knox to make the choice
By stock i dont mean resetting the knox fuse. I mean, if I am on a cusotm rom, i can bring it back to stock for warranty purposes (which I know after the knox fuse is blown, is a hit and miss)
So my question still stands, will I be able to root my phone based on the thread i mentioned above and be able to return it to stock afterwards, or is there something im not seeing there.

I have a Note 4 with Bell so to answer your questions:
1) Yes. This is true for all Canadian carriers AFAIK.
2,4) Should be sufficient with just a root. I haven't been around for a week so I haven't caught up on new developments yet. I didn't see much in the way of AOSP last I looked.
3) This I can't answer but I know for example there is an XPosed module that will allow applications like GOOD to continue to work even with KNOX tripped/removed.
5) The W8 is similar to the 910T. I'm actually running DynamicKat with the KTNote4 Kernel. When you install DK part of the install script checks if your phone is a 910T or a 910W8 and installs the correct kernel. I had an issue with my initial flash of it bootlooping but I used the Stockish kernel from twistedumbrella that I had flashed when I still running stock rooted and backed up the boot image so I restored that boot image and it booted, then I flashed KTNote4 myself. Check here http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-tmobile/development and here http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-tmobile/orig-development for roms/kernels.
6) Yes you can just flash a stock rom (should be floating around somewhere) but Knox will still be tripped.
7) Overall I'm absolutely loving it. I came from an S3 that I was running CM11 on with KT's kernel (seriously, his kernels are amazing!) and I liked it for a really long time but it started to get really sluggish and it just can't handle multitasking the way I'd like it. I do still notice slow downs, and the phone does still get pretty hot sometimes, but that's the price you pay for multi-tasking. KTs kernel certainly isn't perfected (granted I'm on a build from 2 weeks ago) and sometimes it will randomly reboot and bootloop at the splash screen but once I clear cache it boots right up. Usually only does this once it's been pretty hot for a while. I love the multitasking windows, that's exactly what I want. The one thing that threw me off the most was the DPI. It's a big phone, I don't need everything on it to be gigantic. So I did end up using the XPosed module App Settings to scale the DPI down to 480 from 640. There are a couple quirks when doing that, like the task switcher is smaller (since it was designed for 640 DPI) and there are a couple apps that you have to set back to 640 as well like the camera but you can always fix those as you find them.
I'm a firm believer that Android is a dev's playground. I could not use this phone happily without root. In fact, I rooted it the same night I got it within a couple hours. I bought the phone outright since I would have had to change my plan if I wanted to early upgrade and my plan is too good to do that. Happy modding!
Just use Autoinput. Can trigger GPS.

Hello note 3 users. My SGS3 died recently, and Im currently looking for an upgrade. I'm keen on Note 3 (N9005) but I have few questions I need to ask since we all know what kind of a company samsung is.
1. Are there any issues on AOSP roms caused by closed source libraries? Like HWC not working, camera issues etc?
2 .Are there any un-rootable variats of note 3 which I should avoid buying?
Thanks in advance, feel free to add anything i should know.
1. No problem, only the S Note stuff doesn't work (S Note app, Aircommand, ...) but the S Pen works.
2. I think the Verzion version has a locked bootloader so avoid it if you can.
I don't get it, exactly what kind of company Samsung is? Please enlighten us about this, as new users it would be good to know from an already experienced person.

I'd also like to know if there's any reason why note 3 didn't get official CM13 yet? Is it lacking maintainers?
First of all, Knox doesn't mean a thing in Europe. According to European law, if the device is broken and you send it for a warranty repair, the service center can only refuse to repair if they can prove that the defect is caused by the user.
For example, if your headphone jack stops working, they can never link it to the Knox trigger, and they will have to repair your phone.
In Romania for example, official Samsung repair centers know only about the Knox app and what it does, but they never heard of this Knox trigger and they have no clue what it means. I bull**** you not, I personally have a friend that works in a big electronics shop very popular in my country, which collaborates with this service center for Samsung warranty repairs. When he asked them about the Knox trigger, they had no idea whatsoever what that means.
Second of all, AOSP roms don't work very well on this device. Well, they do, they don't actually have any bugs, but all of them suffer from one big problem: the battery life is very, very, very bad compared to the stock touch wiz roms. And there's no drain, if you inspect the battery usage you won't notice any strange behavior, but the battery just decreases very fast.
Also an important thing you have to take into account on AOSP roms, none of them support the s-pen features. People will recommend you all kinds of third party options, and some of them are great, but nothing compares to the stock air command and all of the features it has. It doesn't even get close.
Third, galaxy note 3 is starting to show its age. It's not a bad device by any means, it's still a solid performer, but the new flagships have way better specs and soon a lot of apps will not be as optimized on the note 3 as they will on these newer devices.
Just the OS updates alone aren't very snappy on the note 3. I updated to lollipop and I really miss how well kitkat performed, but it was soooo ugly. If you get used to the lollipop UI and animations, you just can't go back to kitkat.
If you insist on AOSP roms, there's really no point at all in getting the note. If you want a phablet and can't afford the latest and greatest, get the Motorola nexus 6. If you prefer something a bit more portable, consider the nexus 5x.
You can't go wrong with any of the more recent nexus devices, note 3 is already dead update-wise.
The thing is, I'm on a limited budget for a phone. I can spend only ~~250$ which is enough to buy used note 3 ( in a good condition ). With this money I simply cant afford nexus 6. I only care about big amoled screen, 3gigs of ram( since every phone i changed was because of too little ram) and proper aosp support. Thats why I chose note 3. I dont care about spen features since I wont use it too much.

Hi all,
actually i am thinking of why i should root my phone. In the past i rooted all my android devices. I also did not care about knox trigger. But as i maybe want to try out samsung pay when it reaches switzerland i did not root my s7 edge yet. The really basic thing i wanted was to have an ad free phone. And thanks to adguard and ogyoutube i don't have any ad at all (ok sometimes there is a popup comming while browsing but this i did not look into further yet.
But now i might have a new reason to root the device, but i have not seen my need. So i am not sure if its possible.
I have the keyboard cover from samsung. I love it but it has a big big problem. As soon as the keyboard is attached to the front it disables always on display. So i am wondering if anybody is working on a rooted/nonrooted solution for that. It would be perfect if the aod would be shown only in the visible part of the screen with keyboard attached to the front. Is it possible at all or would we have to wait and hope that samsung fixes this?
Thanks
Personally, I wouldn't root for a thing like that. Once you root, it'll trigger Knox, which means that Samsung Pay will never work again, and your warranty is also void, so I would really think about it before rooting. Sure, Samsung Pay isn't that big of a reason for many, including me (since I can't use it yet, like you), but it's still a brand new device, and I would personally hold off for a bit. I would certainly not root just for some accessory.
Also, regarding your question, I have no idea. I don't know if there are any root-apps that solves your problem, but I doubt it? Maybe the S6 Edge has something, so you could head over to that section and look in the "Themes and apps" forum?
Basic problem is that always on display was released with the s7/s7e so i doubt to find anything in the s6 section. Except the hope to get root on s7 also without triggering knox like it seems to exist for s6.
Waranty is no problem. I work for a cellphone provider so i have enough phones around me. And i never had any problems with rooted devices beside the own made problems playing to much with roms and so on but the problem with samsung original accessory and the always on display is a big thing. Lot of customers are complaining and i also want it to work.. so all in all it would be worth rooting for me
a couple of things here. first someone said something like they wouldn't chance rooting for for something like that... my initial response, is why would you buy a powerful device like this, and NOT root it? i mean, if you didn't want to be able to use all that power, why not buy a cheaper device? if you don't root, this device belongs more to samsung and your carrier, than it does you. and you have little control over it. next, never understood people worrying about triggering knox. what exactly does that do, that you are so afraid of. i have been rooting for years, and have sent a couple of my devices in which needed warranty repair, and they always did it, WITH knox tripped. lastly, always on is triggered by the ambient light sensor. so if that is covered, it will turn off, as in if you put your phone facedown on a surface. so you need to make sure that your case has an opening to allow light through to this sensor. hope this helps.
I've rooted my s7 edge in the first week I got it thinking I could use my ps4 controller for the gear vr,but I couldn't. Knox tripped. Installed xposed modules. Bam awesome device! I see Samsung pay as a waste of time, here in Australia, Eftpos payments are used everywhere and I don't see how using my phone to pay will be more convenient and faster than taking my card out of my wallet.
I've never owned a Note series device, but I'm not new to Phablets (lol) I recently purchased (off of Amazon) a Note 4 N910a .. SnapDragon.
Is there any bugs/glitches I should know about before I decide to Root and install a custom ROM/Kernal/Recovery? Any tips and tricks?
I'm coming from a (hard bricked) S5 .. Had it for less than 24 hours and it hard bricked, I'll never use facebook to buy a phone again. $120 out the window! Anyways ......... Thank you in advance
This is all coming from a life long LG die-hard. lol Yeah, mock me if ya want
Well, I haven't had this device for that long, but root should be pretty simple, just flash the CF-AUTO-ROOT with Odin, the sort of interesting part comes with the ROM you're looking for. I'm not sure about the AOSP based ROMs, I've never tried them myself. I think most people go for the Note 7/Note 8 ports. For now, they're all stable, but the one bug all of them have is that for fingerprint lock screen, you need to go out of your way to set it up with a few extra steps and need a third party lockscreen app

Ahhhh, ok. Fingerprint tech hasn't ever intrigued me. My LG Stylo 3 had it and I could never get my fingerprints to match up! lol I can't wait to get my hands on the this handset and tear through it like a hippy looking for the last hit of acid at the bottom of a garbage can! xD I'll probaby go for a Note 7/8 port. But yeah, the fingerprint thing is no biggie for me.
Hi,
I bought a Note 4 to replace my smashed note3 ( thanks!!!! ex gf :- ( ), well ran 6.0.1 but speaker was fried IR only worked 1 inch from tv ir sensor , kept randomly rebooting at less than 20% battery life. bluetooth was sketchy on multiple connections to say the least. SO complained got replacement, well replacement sent is note4 just like the last one brand new open box old stock I mean fully clean phone! But this one is the N910T the 1st one shipped was N910T3 (with a bunch of problems).
I choose the "T" because my old one was a note3 was a N900U that really did not work well on the internet side of things i.e. no 4g I am on metro by t-mobile so A T-Mobile phone would be the way to go to get fast internet.
Baseband N910Tuvu1cog2
build # lmy47x.N910tuvu2dok2 snapdragon 805 2.65ghz according to cpu-z
I need some advice, I would like to upgrade my phone to something cool, i.e. But something that will keep most features intact.
While I could live without fingerprint, I really would like to keep IR and the pen stuff intact (i.e. would like to keep scribbling notes) but most importantly I would like to keep the 4glte intact.
Also I need some hints on how to make this fail safe, I don't know much about phone flashing, the last things I flashed were a nook and a psp phat.
Anybody got a good tutorial for a noob possibly on how to back the current firmware up incase it bricks .
Also what do I need to know about the firmwares out there, which ones could you recommend that will be t-mobile/metroPCS compatible. how do I root this thing at least to do the upgrades. and how can I disable root (and should I?) once flashed so root does not leave a back door open for any tom, **** and harry to hack my phone ;- ).
Would be nice to really come into the year 2018 with this phone i.e. Pie , I mean this old flagship phone still puts some of the mid priced phones to shame :- ). But I would need a rom that would work with my phone which t-mobile doesn't even have a MM version out :- (
ANy help would be appriciated, especially where I can read up with some concise info on the upgrade and rescue processes.
Because there is simply too much info out there to really sift through
