Turning this into a central root method & information thread as there are more than one root method available now as well as the issue of the lack of root for some models.
VROOT - Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 only
For the Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 models there is currently one root method reported to work, it's a bit more complicated in that you have to go through extra steps to use your preferred SU app instead of the one that's included in the root method.
If you are interested the method is VROOT and here is a thread by ShinySide which explains how to use it:
The search continues for a better root method and you can check this thread for more info, If/when a better root is obtained I will update this post with the info.
Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 & 10.1 root methods
For the Galaxy Tab 8.0 and 10.1 models there are currently 2 root methods available. The first one that came out was the popular CF-Auto-Root by Chainfire and more recently is Towelroot by Geohot. Please support these devs by donating to them and/or buying their apps.
I'm listing Towelroot first because:
1. I've personally tested it and verified it works on my own Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 WiFi (SM-T330NU)
2. It seems to be easier (it was very easy)
3. It does not seem to trip the KNOX counter (did not for me in any case)
Towelroot
There is a new root method developed by Geohot called Towelroot.
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/breaking-geohot-roots-the-verizon-galaxy-s5-with-towelroot/
Originally designed for the AT&T & Verizon Galaxy S5 and Note 3 it seems that this root method works on many other phones and devices. From what I understand it should work on most KitKat devices with a Kernel dated before 03 June 2014.
What this means is that even if you don't want to root right now but you want the option to root later you should not take an OTA update for your tablet unless you've verified that you can still root post-update. Likewise if you are rooted (no matter what method) it's recommended that you never take an OTA update because you should always assume that root will be lost (and may not be obtainable again) and in some extreme cases taking an OTA on a rooted device can brick your device.
I used Towelroot on my Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 WiFi (SM-T330NU) and it worked like a charm.
Here's the thread with more information which also includes Geohot's PayPal information.
CF-Auto-Root
Chainfire has released CF-Auto-Root for the Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 and Galaxy Tab 4 10.1
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52846251&highlight=sm-t330nu#post52846251
The files and instructions for how to use them are located on his site:
http://autoroot.chainfire.eu/
Please make sure you read all the disclaimers and warnings on his site and make sure you get the correct Auto-Root for your device.
SM-T330 - Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 WiFi
SM-T330NU - Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 WiFi
SM-T331 - Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 3G (HSPA)
SM-T335 - Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 LTE
SM-T337T - Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 T-Mobile
SM-T530 - Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 WiFi
SM-T530NU - Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 WiFi
SM-T531 - Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 3G (HSPA)
SM-T535 - Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 LTE
I don't know what the difference is between the Tx30 and Tx30NU, just make sure you get the correct one for your tablet model.
If you have a carrier-specific version (if you got your tablet from AT&T for example) you may (probably do) have a different model number and you should triple check to make sure your model matches before attempting to use any of these files.
Your model number might be visible on a sticker on the back of the tablet (it was for me) but in any case you should be able to find it in Settings - General - About Device.
Hope this was helpful, all credit for these root methods goes tot he creators of the methods.
Info combined into original post.
error to me, when i'm trying to root.
Do you have a method and a Custom ROM to flash on the Galaxy Tab 4 8 T330NU (asking you since you have the same tablet as me, you maybe have found a rom to flash on ?!?!)

I used Towelroot to root mine. I am not aware of any custom ROMs or recoveries that are available yet.

At least I'm getting an error when I try to search for a new firmware, telling me that this firmware had been altered. Used towelroot on my SM-T530NU as well.
How can I tell if KNOX counter got up?

So your OTA or most official updates will fail if you are rooted, it does't mean you have tripped KNOX.
To verify if you have or haven't tripped KNOX you boot into the bootloader, if it says "KNOX WARRANTY VOID 0x0" that means you have not tripped KNOX, If it says "KNOX WARRANTY VOID 0x1" then KNOX is tripped.

Hi Guys
There's an OTA 5.0 update ready for my GS5. The problem is that I have root (Towelroot) and want to keep it.
From what I've been reading it looks like all root methods are either ustable of KNOX tripping.
Thanks in advance.
Same issue here
I've got a G900F - no carrier, but running on 3 in the UK anyway. When I got it, it was on Kitkat, and Towelroot wouldn't work due to the compile date being > Towelroot's ability. I downgraded the kernal as per the thread in the General section (as a note, the thread "How to root - all variants" is so far out of date, it's going to lead to people with less experience nuking their devices, perhaps we should unsticky that thread and write up a cleaner version for all the variants out there?) then rooted, and changed the kernal back to my original one.
Great - now I have a rooted, KNOX 0x0 S5 running kitkat. Now Lollipop is available and I'd like to update. So some questions on how I do this and...
1. Retain root with KNOX 0x0
2. Not trash my installed apps / configurations
I know I'll need to update via say Kies as OTA won't be available to me but if/when I update will I keep installed apps / configs? And how do I keep root without affecting KNOX?
This would, I imagine, be a common scenario and worth creating a sticky / section in an updated "How to root all variants" sticky.
Thanks everyone,
a.
Take this only as a pointer because I can't remember exactly what I read, but I think you can update to Lollipop using Mobile ODIN Pro with the Pre-Root option checked, using a stock Lollipop ROM from sammobile / XDA so long as you are already running a rooted KitKat ROM, and that doesn't flag the KNOX counter
Im new to the S5 and just gathering info myself, so make sure you check up on that yourself thoroughly first

Thanks for reminding us of Mobile Odin Pro. It's got the ability to reinject root on firmware installation and not tripping the binary counter.
Can someone confirm whether this method still works on Galaxy S5 when installing 5.0 firmware?
The last comment from Chainfire in his mobile odin thread was that it wasn't compatible yet.....but being worked on......no updates since that post.

Yep, that's what I thought as well. I guess I will have to wait a bit. No big deal.
Thanks Keithross
I have a Note 3 (SM-N900W8 - Telus) that I have had for about 6 months. I have had an original Galaxy S and an S3 which were both rooted.
My phone updated to Lollipop so I had to forgo rooting since everything I read said I couldn't root 5.0 with the new bootloader.
I read about downgrading to Kitkat 4.4.2 so I could root and yesterday I took a chance and did it. I used the official 4.4.2 ROM from Sammobile
and using Odin, I flashed it and after a few tries, I got it to work. Now that I am back on Kitkat, I tried Kingroot (the APK) and it failed to root
my phone.
De La Vega now says it can not root 4.4.2, so my question is, is 4.4.2 rootable? I have read a lot about rooting and there are so many opinions
about what works and what doesn't that I wanted to post here to see if I could get a consensus about this. I know many people are rooted
on 4.4.2, but I just want to know the best way without tripping Knox.
Thanks,
Ian
Anyway, I used Kingo Root on my PC to root my Note 3 and it worked. Knox was not tripped and everything works properly.

Thats nice
iv been out of the rooting loop for awhile, i just got a brand new replacement s4 and looking to root (DO NOT want to trip knox) (just want to root not installing custom firmware)
iv googled a bit but everything seems to be old
so just wondering if u can root 5.0.1 galaxy s4 i337m without tripping knox
if anyone has any info or links thanks
hopefully without having to downgrade!!
Its impossible (momentarily) to direct root 5.0.1
Only method is downgrading to NB1 - rooting with towelroot - then doing a keeproot update to 5.0.1
Downgrade to NB1 and root using this post HERE (Second post - second part under HOW TO GET TO ANY KITKAT 4.4.2)
To update to 5.0.1 and keep root follow this post HERE.

say right in the first link who should not use this ....i337m (which is canadian gs4)
Who SHOULD NOT use this guide?
-- SGH-I337 users with a MDB or MDL bootloader. (Don’t use this guide or you’ll be locked down for good.)
-- Anyone using another Galaxy S4 variant, such as T-Mobile, Verizon, i337m, etc...
..??
anybody ?

Im really, really sorry that i missed such an important information. My apologies.
Btw, the canadian version has an unlocked bootloader (Im pretty sure) so it has to be much easier to get lollipop
There are some more ways to root

your dont have to do all this stuff you can root it with 1 click
I know of no way to root without tripping Knox once the phone is running the latest 4.4.2 and higher.
I bought a used s4 i337m for parts and clobbered together a frankenphone that's running 5.01. SInce CF Autoroot won't work, I'll flash TWRP and supersu when I get a chance.
Oh!. By the way, the Philz Recovery method did not work on my 1 week old gt-i9500. The other method of flashing the ch root tar file through latest Odin worked to root my s4

Has anyone been able to or know how to root either one of the tablets I got them both today from at&t the 10.1 inch and the 8.0. I haven't been able to find any info on these mainly how to root and install recovery. Can't find anything device specific to these. Any info would be greatly appreciated
@slumerican35 you can only root them on kitkat, not lollipop. I believe towelroot will work for both. And the AT&T models have locked bootloaders, so unfortunately no custom kernels (ie no CyanogenMod type ROMs) and no custom recoveries

samsung tab a 2020 SM-T307U
looking if there is a root or if it is expected eventually..
i have 14 days to switch to a different tablet if root is not ever going to be available
I also would love an answer to this query as I own one too now, I’ve only used CF-auto root as I do not possess the skills to do it from scratch. These methods like Dr.fone which boast easy, “legal?” & support for over 7000 devices but I’m worried when people say this that a 2020 device maybe hasn’t been cracked yet, the article I read written by them just said it was explaining how to root Samsung devices. Link is here, would love to be able to root this thing n mod/customize it https://drfone.wondershare.com/root/root-samsung-tablet.html

Checking in, I've been searching for a couple of weeks now, And I haven't found a way to Root it yet. My device is unrooted and I was trying to root via ODIN. there doesn't seem to be a specific file for SM-T307U. Hoping there's something somewhere.
I don't see why this device can't be rooted.
