Update Awareness Thread - Fire TV General

Just reply when you know the update is being sent in OTA so JCase can release root.
So if anyone intends on getting the update and not rooting, give us a heads up when you receive the update.

Root already released by GeoHot via towelroot.com

Thanks for using this thread.
I could have also said to reply if any form of root becomes available to Fire TV before the OTA update.
I am already rooted, and have already fixed up my hosts file for blocking the OTA links using a hosts editor app from google play..

I would imagine an update must be coming soon now that a root exploit has been made public. Better make sure you're DNS settings are solid and best to root and block updates sooner rather than later.

For those who have rooted, you can run this command in adb shell to completely disable the updater:
pm disable com.amazon.dcp
You can verify in the system -> about it says "Checking now" for "Last Checked" on the update.

I just did that, and it said killed.
I still see the last date it was checked.
When should I see "checking in "last checked" option?
So in the terminal app I use to sideload other apps on my Fire TV I type:
adb shell pm disable com.amazon.dcp
Is that right?

I would try just
adb shell
and then at the prompt type
pm disable com.amazon.dcp
You might need to reboot to get the menu to change.

Does killing the updater survive a hard reboot, for example after a power cut?
If not, how could I set the command to run at boot ?
Thanks for all the work on this great device so far :good:

can't u just rename the updater apk to something else? btw what is the name of the apk?

Yes the pm disable is permanent.
Yes you can rename the apk, but why rename the apk when the pm disable is infinitly easier? The apk is /system/app/com.amazon.dcp.apk

I am using js terminal on my android tablet to sideload everything. How can I execute this command this way?
I tried adb shell but got an error. Thanks!
Nevermind, I found some directions for that!!!

I plan to disable updates per the above instructions, but are these commands reversible as well? If Amazon releases an update that brings additional functionality down the road, I may reconsider my decision to update (and potentially re-root with another method).

Blocking URL's
Not ready to root until ClockWorksMod Recovery is available but want to be able to root when this is true.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2760884
Found this thread about blocking URL's. Seems like this is what is needed if we don't root until more options and tools are available for rooted FTV..
I am using Linksys E4200 and using Access Restriction > Parental Controls option. Pasted the plain text copies of URLS's which were transferred to router version below. Since URL 1's translation was too long I had to manually paste cut off ".net" in URL 1. Set access to always.Target Devices > Restrict Internet Access need to add FTV device.
Block Specific Sites
amzdigitaldownloads.edges.net ****Edit: this should be **** amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuite.net ****
firs-ta-g7g.amazon.com
Schedule Block Internet Access
Always
Target Devices Restrict Internet Access
android-c770a088dec6570f
android-f28e25ac80891726
Android_A10000138BBBB8
Two questions. Not sure what FTV is listed as. Other devices showed up with name so I know not to add them. Guessed the three "android" names above that one was FTV. Does anyone know if this is correct and if correct which one is my FTV? If not correct what is is called?
For Block Specific Sites is the first URL necessary and does blocking it cause problems with some of the current FTV apps?

You are missing part of the digital downloads site.
It should be "edgesuite" not edges.
The amzdigitaldownloads link can cause services to fail, but services do not fail when only blocking the "firs-ta-g7g" page.
Even the PolarisGo app fails to work, but the website works fine.

I switched to only blocking firs-ta-g7g.amazon.com. This should be ok, right? What people at thread were blocking.
Used my router to find FireTV was 192.168.1.126. Checked Status > Local Network > DHCP Client Table
Saw that android-f28e25ac80891726 was mapped to 192.168.1.126 which FireTV said it was using. Deleted other entries.

I just bought a fire TV from best buy for my dad I'm about to set it up for the first time then root has an update that kills root came out yet or am I good to go?

I just bought a FTV last night from best buy as well. I booted it up and updated it prior to rooting it. Not sure if next week's update will patch this rooting method, but I do not want to make that mistake again. I updated my chromecast when they first came out like an idiot... and can't ever root those

with out reading all the forums... would this affect the USA models released on 11/2/2014?
Sounds like it, I can not tell you for sure though. But apparently apps like esfile explorer load it too. It appears to be some sort of push service. It is part of the Xperia app to remotely find and wipe an Xperia phone. But it is constantly communicating with Chinese based ips.

About haft a year until now, almost manufacturers intergrated Baidu Location tracking for China compatible.
Just like removing "What's New" from NavRing (http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-...-rootremove-whats-navring-small-apps-t2902419), you can use ADB on unrooted devices to block it.
Code:
adb shell pm block com.sonymobile.mx.android

When I tried this on my Z3 I was getting the new Block status = false, when I looked at my Current Running Apps I noticed that the name was com.sonymobile.mx.android:bdservice , so I tried it again with the additional part of the name and it told me that it was blocked.
Anyway, I rebooted and for my surprise the baidu folder was there again and it was created after the reboot, so it seems that it's not working after all.
**Edit** just saw that it came back so I checked again and noticed that the service running on MyXperia app was com.sonymobile.mx.android:bdservice_V1, so I did the same blocking that one, it was successful, rebooted and there it is again.**

As per the reddit comments, try:
pm block com.sonymobile.mx.android
Clean the data of the MyXperia App
Reboot
Delete the "baidu" folder manually
Reboot
Also, as mentionned earlier, some other apps can also initiate it - noteably the ES suite

I tried to follow this instructions but when I try pm block com.sonymobile.mx.android, the block status says False, if I try the other 2 that I mentioned in my previous post then it changes to Block = true.
In addition to that, when I go to the my Xperia App I can't Clean Data, just cache, so I do it, then the reboot but then it keeps coming back, maybe because it is not simply working as per instructions.
*EDIT: Nevermind me. What I said was covered above.

Thanks for your help attempts, I really appreciate it, but like I mentioned, I'm already doing that, but in my case it's not working as expected. I had ES File Explorer Installed but after reading that it may be linked to it also, I uninstalled it, rebooted and tried all this again, just with the same results.
So you've got ADB working, right? You do "adb devices" and get a response back with your device serial #, right?
Once you have that, run "adb shell" as its own command. Then do the "pm block com.sonymobile.mx.android" and see what you get.

No, I was not using the adb devices first as I was using the same instructions that were posted to block the WhatsNew option, I was just going straigth to adb shell and then the rest.
So, to be sure and very optimistic I just did the whole process, step by step, beginning with adb devices and waiting for the serial number and then going from there to adb shell but I just got the exact same results, no pm block com.sonymobile.mx.android, it just always say False, and then can't clean data on my Xperia App, just cache. After trying to complete the whole process of deleting folders and rebooting I just got frustrated again to see the folder created again and my Xperia app still running with the com.sonymobile.mx.android:bdservice_V1 process linked to it.
I just got it working, it seems that my problem was that I had the my Xperia app activated as a Device Administrator, that was preventing everything from work. After deactivating it and do the process and reboot, I no longer have the folder, feel a little more relief now, thanks.

I had this folder on my moto G 4.4.4 stock no rooted , deleted it , it has not come back .
After the last update i deleted the folder and it's gone permanently from my device. Bye bye Baidu!

[How-To] Block OTA Updates Without Root (or a router) on Fire OS 5

With the new Fire OS 5 update we can use the Debloater tool to disable APKs/services responsible for automatic updating. This was not previously possibly due to Fire OS 3 being built on Android 4.2.2 and the Debloater process needing Android 4.4.x+. No more worrying if your router is blocking everything properly. And of course... no root needed!
Disable Update w/o Root Steps:
1. Enable USB Debugging on your Fire TV (or TV Stick) (how-to here)
2. Setup adbFire on your computer and establish a connection to your Fire TV[Stick] (how-to here)
3. Setup Debloater tool (how-to here)
4A. In the Debloater tool, check off the APK below then hit the "Apply" button:
DeviceSoftwareOTA.apk (com.amazon.device.software.ota)
4B. Instead of using Debloater Tool you can just send the following ADB command:
Code:
adb shell pm hide com.amazon.device.software.ota
Unlike the pm disable command, hide disables the apk without root.
Click to collapse
After hiding the apk your Amazon Fire TV or Fire TV Stick will no longer get OTA updates.
If you go into Settings > System > About you can no longer check for updates... yay.
To undo the block you can simply "unhide" each apk using the Debloater tool or run:
Code:
adb shell pm unhide com.amazon.device.software.ota
Click to collapse
Be careful if you try to disable other system apps. If you disable something important and the device won't start up.. you'll have to perform a factory reset to fix the issue (not sure if possible with stick?). Have more apks to disable to reduce unneeded system processes? please share.
TL;DR
You gotta update to Fire OS 5.x in order to block updates without root (or router).
I know this defeats the purpose of blocking updates since you want to stay on old fw/sw... but science!
This may not work on all future Fire OS 5.x+ builds. Tested on FireTV Stick with Early Developer 5.0.3 build.
Thank you for this info.
Can anybody confirm this is working ? I have not received my AFTV2 yet.
Does this survive reboot?
Received my Firetv 2 and I can confirm it works, it even survives a reboot. To me this is the best method of blocking the Amazon updates.
Thanks mister LakituLives for writing this up
Does this work on the Firetv 1? Or only on the 4K fire TV. When I try to run debloater on the firetv 1 it keep saying unsupported. Thanks.
I assume you´re not running Fire OS 5 on the aTV 1. With Fire OS 3 this can´t be done this way.

Glad to help. The pm list packages -d (disabled packages) is empty because debloater hides the packages and not disables them.
Code:
[email protected]:/ $ pm list packages -d
pm list packages -d
[email protected]:/ $
There is nothing to see.
Code:
1|[email protected]:/ $ pm list packages | grep dcp
pm list packages | grep dcp
1|[email protected]:/ $ pm list packages | grep pico
pm list packages | grep pico
package:com.svox.pico

My version is now 5.0.3.1 because I unhid the packages and updated the machine, now the packages are hidden again and System --> About --> "installed Date" and "Last Checked" are both "Checking now......" and if I select Check for System Update I get an Update error. Perfect !

I get the same error now as well after running (as root):

No idea if this actually blocks updates or just the checking. I guess we'll have to wait until the next update.

You can simply "unhide" each apk using the Debloater tool if you should ever want to reverse this process.

I don't know if adbFire is connected, last night I was able to install FireStarter. This morning, I don't know if adbFire is connecting and Debloater isn't showing anything, or do I need to use USB to USB to do this?
Does this work on the Fire Stick? Also, what's the benefit of this method? I can't think of a reason to do this, unless you had a Fire TV on the old OS and hadn't a chance to root it yet?

Thanks for that info. I'll have a look at it.
Shouldn't it be bypassed by just changing the package name in apps manifest file?
How does Ama. recognize those apps? Only by checking xda or other boards or do they use an algorithm to check for those apps and report them?
EDIT: Is it possible to extract the Settings.db via adb on an unrooted device?

Pretty sure they just block by package name right now. I assume they just hear about these apps online and aren't actively scanning for them, but who knows. Not sure if you can mess with Settings.db on an unrooted device. Never tried.
where are the settings stored, id like to be able to push them via adb, and edit them on my pc
Is this app still working?
as of about 16 hours ago, yes.
Can you make is so that app can update over internet to change the name ever so often to avoid the blacklist?
luckily this still works. i couldnt find a way to disable the blacklist. see https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=73761262&postcount=15
Still working with latest update. Thank you!
Pretty sure with the source you could just make your own build/name and avoid all problems with blacklisting.

So yes. It still works perfectly when setup correctly. I mostly use it with AppStarter v4.0.

NO ROOT: Stop Updates on 5.3.2.1 (and maybe others) and delete not installed updates

After searching the internet for maybe 10 hrs to find a working solution to this problem, i finally found a way to stop updates on Kindle Fire:
You need to download NoRoot Firewall from Play Store: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.greyshirts.firewall&hl=de
How to get PlayStore on Kindle Fire:
Download, unzip and copy on your device: computerbild.de/download/Google-Play-Store-fuer-Amazon-Fire-Tablets-APK-18304123.html
Install in this order:
1. GoogleLoginService.apk
2. GoogleServicesFramework.apk
3. com.google.android.gms-6.6.03_(1681564-036)-6603036-minAPI9.apk
4. com.android.vending_7.2.13_com(playstore).apk
When the Firewall is installed, you need to block "DeviceSoftwareOTA". After that you go to Settings -> Apps&Games -> Manage All Applications -> All and search for "Device SoftwareOTA". Press CLEAR DATA to delete the downloaded update.
Thats it!
NOTE: You should not wait too long after getting internet access on your device. Otherwise the update will INSTALL AUTOMATICLY AND YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO REMOVE.
Sorry for no real links, I am not allowed to post them.
Sorry for your long search.
This is a known solution on this device (active discussion in several threads) and Amazon devices in general dating back several generations.
But good you reposted as folks tend to look at the most recent contributions and are not especially fond of searching.

There's already a batch file that does all this for you and then some.

This has not been confirmed through multiple sources. One (perhaps two) individuals reported difficulty disabling pre-installed apps on FireOS 5.4.0.1 leading to much discussion and an unproven conclusion that Amazon had removed certain capabilities from FireOS 5.4.0.1.
I certainly concur the possibility exists and allowing the device to update is unwise until we know the full story.
I have it on my bucket list to install 5.4.0.1 for a test run. However, the target device (which has a preservable 5.0.1 bootloader) is in use and I'd rather not fire-up a new one. At present field reports are the best source.
Sadly this didn't work to block an update to my new tablet.
I thought I had everything GTG with these instructions but last night my tablet got updated from 5.3.3.0 to 5.4.4.0. So ya, bumber!!

5.4.4.0 is a thing or is that a typo?

Must be a typo, mixing up 5.3.4.0 and 5.4.0.0 - which seem to be identical though, as build.prop contains
Code:
ro.build.mktg.fireos=Fire OS 5.4.0.0
ro.build.version.name=Fire OS 5.3.4.0 (579225620)
5.4.4.0 isn't a thing yet (although I've seen that version string here, multiple times)

Yeah I saw it multiple times too and wanted to know if Amazon was going insane with the updates.

It could mean a few things 1) 5.4.0.0 and 5.3.4.0 are both the same...as in no significant update was needed to modify the build.prop with a newer version. 2) So because of that the lower version would really still be the current "version". 3) Typo. And given the things we've seen and discovered, I wouldn't be surprised if it was that.
Thank you

Thanks. Straight forward. Used how to feel guide precisely for for fire hd 10 to get play store working. Now I'm in airplane mode about to apply your steps. All the other post about it were vague and posters just sent links to other discussions that just made it frustrating. Thank you again.

How to delete system update files?

Okay so here is the deal. I connected my phone to my home wifi to adjust some settings to shut off my internet at night so the kids will go to bed... well be more likely to go to bed when they can't just sit and watch youtube/netflix all night. Personally I don't think they need tablets or entertainment to fall asleep, but they are my fiance's kids, and it is what it is because they have used this method for so long.
Anyway enough personal stuff, when I connected my phone, it downloaded a system update. I could not stop it, and now it is bugging me to restart and update but I dont want to. I can delay it, up to 9 times, for a later time, but I want to delete the update files entirely.
I was hoping there would be a way to do it without root, but I am fairly certain that at this point, I'm going to have to bite the bullet and install the update
Use adhell3 or adb to disable com.wssyncmldm

Best guide I've seen, including how to reinstall apps disabled though adb, which most people seem to think is impossible.
EDIT: the shorted link on my end says "...root access" at the end. Just to be clear, the not shortened end of that link actually says "uninstall-carrier-oem-bloatware-without-root-access/", so yes, it works without root.

Thanks for the guide, but it tells me the package isn't installed for user 0.

When I disabled this the entire settings option for system update disappears, and back in early March when I was still holding out for a Snapdragon root my phone auto downloaded an update and gave me a persistent notification about installing update. Disabling this made it go away and it couldn't auto-install it.
You can install App Inspector to see a searchable list of every app on your phone, including the package name you need for adb.
BTW, there's an option in developer options that will let you disable auto-installing updates on restart.
