If your bootloader is locked, you can't.
If your bootloader is unlocked, flash a recovery and then a SuperSU .zip.

Good luck, you'll need it.

All known methods of unlocking the bootloader were closed off a few updates ago, while we were still on Jellybean. Best of luck with finding one now; unless you (or someone else) succeed, you're permanently on KitKat.

Considering that you have to ask, it's probably locked. If you really want to check, power on the phone while holding both volume buttons.
The know-how for softmodding a game console isn't going to help much with unlocking or modifying Android devices; they're very different beasts.

Hello, I'm new to the xperia arc S, i already have a samsung galaxy S and it's really easy flashing with that device. Now comming to this new one I'm having many problems. My phone has bootloader locked, trying to give it root right now but i can't see how i would be able to flash CM9 because i will need a ICS kernel with recovery and I don't seem to able to flash it. Any help will be appreciated.
You have to unlock bootloader first
Any easy/free way of doing that?

Have installed the 4.2 update via recovery and locked the bootloader. Will I now get future OTA updates from google?

The bootloader being locked or unlocked makes no difference. We typically see people OTA update fails from people who have modified system apps/files or installed a different kernel.
Ah ok. I had previously rooted it. But decided to revert back now that I have installed 4.2

Unlocking Bootloader
So, can you unlock the bootloader on 4.2? Or does it even matter on what Android version you are on?
Thanks and Cheers!

Yeah, but is the method for unlocking it on 4.2 different from the method on 4.1.1?
Sorry Im asking all these questions, rooting is a bit different from jailbreaking lol

Haha, no. The method is still the same. And I suspect it will be the same for a while to come.
Oh and welcome to the Android world
The bootloader is unrelated to the version of Android you are running.
It is a " boot loader" that runs before the operating system is loaded.
Unlock it once, when you first get the device - and it should stay unlocked forever.
Nothing to do with root either - except the bootloader has to be unlocked to root the device.
Root and unroot the device as you like - just never mess with the bootloader after you unlock it.
Unlocking purges all your files...

You can flash over system partition only from RAZR M, other vital parts flashing is forbidden by internal security procedures.

Well, darn it. I just flashed Luge firmware over my M (which was fully successful) to see if I could flash back (haven't tried yet). Hope I'm not stuck!!!
-How public-ready are we talking? Do you think it will allow motopocalyps?

Wait wait, you wrote you have Luge (smartphone itself). "I have a luge". Flash back is not possible, if bootloader is locked, but read further.

I have both. After f**king with my M so much, I ended up trashing it a bit. So I bought a Luge to replace it for cheap. Ive been flashing crap back and forth, and you were right. So far, Im unable to flash/overwrite the Luge bootloader with the M bootloader. I was able to flash the system and whatnot, so now I have 2 LOCKED, unrooted Ms..... Im currently flashing my Luge back to Luge firmware and will just have to wait. Thanks for all the info though! it was all worth a shot

I have a major problem, I need to know if it will be possible to flash a custom rom on a nexus 6p. It seems that it will be hard because of that new bootloader.

The bootloader does get updated. But you can unlock any bootloader, and updating it doesn't lock it again. Take a look at my guide:

Oh, because i was afraid of the phone won't boot because of the android n won't boot if the phone has a unlocked bootloader.

Nope, nothing like that to worry about. The locked/unlocked status won't stop it from booting.
Thanks. I can now upgrade in peace

You can't upgrade because the bootloader is locked. The bootloader is locked because Verizon are money hungry and want to ensure you need an upgrade.
but in developer option there is an option to unlock boot loader isint that suffice ?
bump.
anyone please update
is it or is it not Verizon?
Hi all, I am in no way a developer, found out about this site from a Quora post about *drumroll* rooting a DT2. My question is this: I purchased my phone reconditioned (whatever that entails) from Amazon. It does not have the Verizon check mark on the bottom--does that mean I can root it? Please help!

Could we trick the DT2 into believing its an update for it, but then update the firmware to unlock the bootloader?... How does Verizon update the firmware themselves if the bootloader is locked?
