What is the safest way for me to silence the stock camera shutter sound? I don't have the option to turn off the shutter. I have used camera360 but the app is complete crap, sometimes not saving the photos at all. The stock app is good but it pretty much says "Hey look at me I'm taking a selfie!" every time I take a selfie.
I do want to root but I don't want the problems associated with the knox trip. Also, I've heard about the taiwan rom but am concerned about locale / language and other issues.
Any advice appreciated. Thanks,

No issues here.
I only speak English unfortunately. Or when you load the ROM it only displays English?
I guess you didn't simply flash and that's it, so don't strictly believe your statement.

Yeah,
Australian Samsung S5 has that issue, the only way that i know to remove that is either get a different camera app or different ROM.
Its annoying as
Found the fix.....
You need root.
In system\csc there is a file called customer.xml
in there, you will find the following...
<Multmedia>
<Camera>
<ShutterSound>on</ShutterSound>
</Camera>
</Multimedia>
Delete these lines and then the shutter sound will be muted when the phone sound is muted.
Reboot phone.
Set the phone to muted sound and the camera shutter will also be muted.
* Modifying this file will set your phone to "Custom" if its not already. *
Alternatively, you can change the following...
<ShutterSound>on</ShutterSound>
to
<ShutterSound>off</ShutterSound>
This should leave your phone status "Official" if it already is.

Hi everyone.
I was wondering if anyone has figured out how to disable the camera shutter sound when the phone is not on silent
Thanks

I can't seem to find the option to switch off the camera shutter sound too
The camera setting don't seem to be permanently set all the time, for eg. when I switch on auto contrast, it went back to "off" again when I use the camera for the second time.

Shutter sound can't be disabled by default. If you are rooted, you can rename the ogg file and it won't play.
File is in /system/media/audio/ui
It seems the SGS2 has gone backwards as even with SGS1, the camera sound can be turned off in the settings menu.
Don't take this as absolute truth, but I'm pretty sure it's the law in some countries that you're not able to turn off the camera-shutter sound.
"Blade buddy" allows you to turn it off. It's free on the market.

This is true in a number of locations.
I've managed to stop the shutter sound and the video recording start/stop sounds by renaming all the camera-related ogg files in the /system/media/audio/ui folder, but I can't seem to find the ogg file for the camera 'autofocus' sound.
Does anyone know which file this is?

The focus sounds are stored inside the camera app itself and because of that a little harder to get rid of. Because it is app-related you could use another camera app and not have the problem... or you can try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074628

Root explorer (or other proper apps) should ask for root permission, allow that. After that you'll need to mount the system partition with write access. Root Explorer has a little button at the top for this, no experience with other apps.

[Q]How to change the camera shutter sound?
no need for me to open a new topic, since i got a similar question, how can we change that horrible camera shutter sound?
the default sound from the sgs1 is what I'm looking for, i found out that this specific sound is played by the system in sgs2 when you take a screenshot (by pressing Home + Power buttons), but i can't figure out where to find it and how can i set it as the default shutter sound for the camera app
so, i don't want to disable the sound, i already found some topics explain that, i just want to replace it
any help is appreciated

OK found it, but how can i replace the files with an silent one.
I cannot cut or rename those original .ogg files, probably because it is situated in the apk file.
what to do?
also the solution for 'maranello69': copy the beloved shutter1.ogg file from the sgs and just replace it in your sgs2.

The 2.3.4 update also does this (its the first one I've bothered updating my SGSII for). I'll just set Tasker to set silent on when the camera is on, and revert when the camera app closes, job done.
Firstly, just to address some of the "fixes" that have been offered in in this forum:
Muting volume or setting sound to silent
Doesn't work.
Renaming/removing "shutter.ogg" from system/media/audio/ui
This doesn't work as the sound files is embedded in the camera apk.
Adding <CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>FALSE</CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu> into "others.xml"
Doesn't work. This enables the menu option in the camera app but does not permit the setting to be changed.
Wanam Xposed or Enforcedstreamsilencer
Neither works.
Now that we've gotten that out of the way, the only surefire way I've found to kill the shutter sound is to replace the audio files that are actually embedded in the stock camera apk with silent versions of the same files. I've modified the apk to remove all sound except for the ticking in the camera timer (which I think is actually useful) and the panorama mode start/stop sounds. Happy to upload another modified one with all sounds removed if there's interest.
Unfortunately the file is too big to attach to XDA forums and I don't have permission to link externally so you'll have to copy and paste the short URL below to get it from my SkyDrive.
sdrv.ms/16gFVqc
To install the apk you will need root access to your phone and a file manager that can access root functions. Do the following:
In your file manager navigate to system/app path and locate "SamsungCamera2.apk"
Rename it something else like "SamsungCamera2.apk.bak"
Copy over the modified apk into the same location
Make sure the permissions of the new file are the same as the original
Enjoy (no need to reboot)
Note that I'm not responsible if your phone and/or camera breaks, bricks or gains sentience and chokes you in your sleep. I'm not a android developer, just a desperate guy who wanted to use the stock camera quietly for non-perverted, non-nefarious reasons (trust me) and I've only confirmed that it works with the Aussie Note 3. Anyone else use at your own discretion.
Trying it out now, This has been driving me nuts for the past couple of days,
The Auto Focus sound is just way too loud.
I'll let you know how it goes !

Confirmed Working!!!:victory:
I tried it and camera finally shut up . For some reason, this got rid of the "processing....." delay after every shot as well. Very well done. Thank you:good:
Hi all,
What worked for me was editing the customer.xml in the csc folder.
Navigate down to <camera> and then change
<ShutterSound>on</ShutterSound>
to
<ShutterSound>off</ShutterSound>
save and then restart phone.
Now when the phone is in silent mode no camera sound.
This also fixes wanams no camera sound even if phone isn't in silent I believe.
Worked for me on my optus branded N9005
Hope this helps in some way.
Worked for me with SM-N9005. Perfectly mute focusing sound and shutter sound.

Gave this a try. Totally works on my Aussie unbranded N9005.
So it looks like there are now two confirmed methods of muting camera sound:
If you want to be able to mute sound by turning the volume down, then do choppiii's method
If you want to permanently mute the sound (in case you forget to turn the volume down, which I would probably do) then use my method to replace the camera apk.
Hooray choices!

Hi,
Replaced apk. Starting camera from the drawer keeps it quiet. However if you have lock screen swipe to left to enable the camera then shutter sound is there. Weird. Anyone else?
Also changing mode let say for sport mode brings sound back again for me.
Renaming /system/media/ui camera related sound files seems to help to this issue..
I tried all the listed methods on my aus note 3 from vodafone. The only one that worked was the choppiii method. It let the system mute stop the camera shutter sound. I stil want a working menu option.
Samsung really know how to upset me. I rooted this device specifically to get rid of that sound.

Hi...
Instead of adding
<CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>FALSE</CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>
Into the others.xml add
<CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>TRUE</CscFeature_Camera_ShutterSoundMenu>
In other words add true not false...
I can't confirm if this works or not as I'm running omega rom and it already has it enabled...

try "a better camera" from app store. no root needed and works for me. photo quality and function as good if not better then stock camera...now its my replacement camera app.

" a better camera " did the trick. Thanks.
I don't have root to install the fixed Samsung camera apk. I tried the new Google camera from android 4.4 but it has sound too. Could you make an apk for the Google camera from android 4.4 without sound?
does this app make the camera faster?
i don't have root.
if i try to install it anyway does it works?
thanks.
a better camera is not so good, even camera fv5 is the same.
i really would like that samsung make more accessible compensation and iso metering in the stock app...it takes too much time to enter in setting.
is not so difficult mother samsung...cmon!
camera shutter sound is gone for me, thanks!

Hi guys.
Need to say I looked 2 days to clarify that problem through topics but could not.
I have samsung galaxy note 3 unlocked international . SM-N9005
I rooted the phone I am able to access system folders.
So i see camera sounds stuff is located under
/system/media/audio/ui
the files I believe related to my problem are (at least I opened all others and did not find any more focus/shutter sounds) :
Auto_focus.ogg
camera_click.ogg
Camera_click_short.ogg
camera_focus.ogg
Shutter.ogg
Shutter_multiple.ogg
I changed their filenames. And -
I was able to mute shutter sound. BUT focus sound is still on !!
I tried to move that darn sound files to other folder - all in vain.
Yes I restarted and shut down the phone.
Also the app that does mute system sounds when camera is on does not work for me. When my phone is on mute that freaking camera still produces noise.
So to recap. Shutter sound turned off by changing media filenames. Focus still on.
Any ideas??

nope. so I read some more info and looks like camera sounds are hardcoded in camera.apk
Hence you may rename delete whatever you want but on this version sound still be on.
Other camera applications I have installed do not produce any sounds.
Add this to your others.xml in system/csc
Code:

Reboot and there will be a sound option in camera settings where you can just silent all sounds.

All these problems are coming from the CSC you are using. ie XEF (France). It's a build feature in the camera APK itself to match the laws. Try changing your CSC(ie CHINA for me) if you want to be able to disable camera sound without rooting and/or changing system files. It worked for me.
Hi,
Does anyone know which country N910H ROM has native option to mute camera shutter?
I am hoping to avoid root. While taking pictures of birds and animals I would like to turn of shutter sound. So I would like to flash such official ROM
you can mute it with enforced stream silencer.
Thanks for the reply. I would still like to know about the country with that option available.
you can mute it on all models of the note 4.
To my knowledge, there is no option to mute camera sound in any note 4 version in default. It's only available in custom rom, or custom camera software. Or you can just silent your phone, and the camera will also silent

Do you see his question? He is asking that if note 4 has native option to mute the camera sound or not. He is not asking what application used to mute the camera sound. I believe you that you can mute the camera with enforced stream silencer. But once again, check his question man!
I included screenshot of the option if you still doesn't know what he meant.
i know what he meant. he wanted an option to mute camera sound. enforced stream silencer gives you that option. you can turn sound on. you can turn sound off.
what is so difficult to understand ?

Not true. My stock Verizon Note 4 (SM-N910V) has an option to mute the camera shutter in the settings. It didn't at launch, but a subsequent update added it in. Some carriers in the U.S. had it in the settings for the Note 4 at launch. I didn't have to download any additional or custom software.
It's not included by default on all versions of the Note 4, but it is on some.
My understanding is that in some countries is illegal to take silent pictures (S. Korea? ) and there is no option to turn off sound in camera settings. My tmo version has ot included. I think that easiest way is to just turn off phone sound from notification panel right before taking picture or press and hold power button and mute phone from device options menu. It is not permanent solution but will do the trick.
Sent from my SM-N910T using XDA Free mobile app
EVERY note 4 can silence shutter sound. there are some which do not have the option IN THE CAMERA MENU. in those devices you download and install this application (attached) and click to silence it. in the others you click on the camera menu which does the same thing.
there - how complex is that to understand ?
you do not need root to silence it.
you do not need to go to silent mode.
you do not need to flash a rom.
you do not need to change countries.
all you need is to expose the enforced stream toggle option. which you can do without root by installing the enforced stream silencer app.
While I appreciate everyones response. I would still like to know CSC of 910H variant which has this option available as default. Any 910H variant user who has it, kindly reply.
Since yesterday after I played a whatsapp voice message, I can't turn off the camera shutter and Screenshot sound, even though I have my phone in complete silent mode!
Did anyone ever have this problem with their 6p or know any solution to turn off those sounds?
I allready restarted the phone, uninstalled the camera updates and reinstall from the play store, went into the settings to make sure I was in silent mode, still nothing works!
Any help is much appreciated!
I think that Google's intent was to prevent non-determined creeps from taking "upskirt" shots and other related idiocies. You have to delete/rename some file, I think it was /system/media/audio/ui/camera_click.ogg or some such. This needs root.

It's illegal in South Korea (and many countries) for any mobile phone maker to sell a phone that allows a user to silence the faux shutter sound on their mobile phone cameras. You'll need to download a custom ROM that allow them to be silenced, or delete the sound like the above posted said.
