Worked for me! It was even easier than rooting an HTC Evo 4G. This thread, or at least the thread referenced in the first post, should be stickied in the Development sub-forum.
I am a Noob and I can Root my Note!
I had experience rooting a Milestone 2 with SuperOneClick and an unbranded Android Tablet with Z4Root. (Thanks to developers of these!)
Unfortunately, both these methods did not work on the Galaxy Note so I came here and found this thread.
Unfortunately, ADB drivers was an issue with the zergRush Exploit on first run. The easiest way to get around this is to install PDANet on Windows and have it install the drivers for you. No need to complete the whole installation, just watch when it's finished installing USB drivers and then when prompted to continue, just cancel. Then re-run the zergRush Exploit and it should do its magic (Again thanks to the developers who work on these!)
While I'm able to freeze some apps with ROM Toolbox, I'm unable to change boot animation or the battery icon. Would appreciate if anyone could help with this!
Rooting hav no relation to install official/crckd version of apk.
Rooting needed for those application which are needed to access your system data e.g backup etc
when you need to install these kinds of application (weather off/unoff) you needs Root.
The optional unrooting package works also perfectly (just for info)...
i have sent back my Galaxy Note to amazon just to wait for the white version of the Note.
This method won't increase your binary counter, so root and unroot it as often as you like
Never either had any problem at all after rooting it, so this method is also stable and won't crash your device in any way or crash any applications...
Root confirmed working here, superuser.apk doesn't have permissions set properly but still works, easy to fix, updates fine from market.
Awesome - confirmed working. This needs to be stickied... other websites are promoting netchips CWN kernel method instead of this MUCH simplier way.
For you noobs with a clean system (that means me!), get the following files:
Note I run a 64 bit windows box, get the 32 bit variants if necessary.
You need:
1) Latest version of Kies
www.samsung.com/ca/kies/index.html
download file for me was: Kies_2.0.3.11082_152_4.exe
2) Java:
www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html
Click on jdk and download. File for me: jdk-7u1-windows-x64.exe
3) android sdk:
developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
My file was: installer_r15-windows.exe
4) zergrush root script
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312859
grab the zip file in that page i.e.
DooMLoRD_v1_UNROOTING.zip
and unzip it to your windows box.
Install 1, 2, 3 in that order.
Find the SDK Manager program in your sdk install directory, double click it, and download/update 'Android SDK Platform Tools'.
Note you can't run the sdk manager program from the command prompt, or it'll complain that directories are being locked.
Now follow the instructions on the zergrush page, i.e. do the 'before you begin' stuff.
Go to the directory where you unzipped the doomlord zip file, run the runme script from a command prompt, and that's it.
To test, download terminal monitor, run it, and do a 'su' then 'id' and see if it says you are root or not.
Good luck!

sir can i ask a question?
after i install the cwm and i will make a nandroid back up before rooting the phone.

will this work with the Korean version of the Note? thanks in advance.
Updated tweaks are at bottom of this post
Here is a flashable zip of 3 scripts that when put together speed up your phone and make it faster.
The niftyconiptionstweaks was meant only for the HTC Evo 4g but if your phone supports "init.d" then try it out if you want to and please report back. It may not even flash in recovery because the phones are different but its worth a shot. If it works, please post saying it does and what kind of phone you have. The Legit Zip should work for any phone.
To determine if your phone supports "init.d", download a file manager like Root Explorer or ES File Explorer, go to "system", then "etc". If you come across a folder named "init.d" then your phone may support it.
I did not write these scripts, I just edited them to work like Car-O-Dopes tweaks. It basically has the same values as Car-o-Dopes tweaks. It is best to use this on a Sense rom. I used the S97ramscript, KickAssKernel, and 02sictweaks but I changed the values of each script to match what Car-o-Dopes tweaks do, and I wanted to share this with you all because it makes installing these tweaks easier and faster. Thanks to zeppelinrox for the kickasskernelizer, Juwe11 for the S97ramscript, Smokinl1337 for the 02sicktweaks, coffehandle for giving me the idea when he made his own tweaks, and Car-o-Dope for coming up with the ultimate combination of out-of-memory settings and sysctl tweaks that make your phone smooth as butter.
I use this on my HTC Evo 4g running Shooter E3D, with AnthraX kernel and it works like a charm.
I am in no way responsible if your device messes up or anything unwanted happens to it. Use at your own risk.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40376256/niftyconiptionstweaks.zip
Instructions: Follow Exactly
1) Make a nandroid backup incase something goes wrong or you want to revert.
2) Download a file manager like Root Explorer or ES File Explorer (I use Root explorer).
3) Open up root explorer and go to "system", then "etc", then "init.d". Click on the "Mount R/W" button so it turns to "Mount R/O" (that way you can delete files).
4) Delete any or move to a folder on your sdcard (incase you want to revert) any ram scripts or ram tweaks you may have that is in the "init.d" folder (examples of ram scripts or tweaks are 01sysctl, 06sysctl, 02sicktweaks, S97ramscript, 99supercharge, and 98Kickasskernel).
5) Also if you are running v6 supercharger, you need to un-supercharge. If you are running Kickass Kernelizer, you need to un-kernelize and do not run those scripts while you have the niftyconiptionsscripts installed.
6) Uninstall any ram manager apps or task killers and do not use these.
7) After you uninstall all of that, reboot your phone and verify that none of the scripts you had before are still installed. (it will mess with the scripts you are about to install).
8) Boot into recovery (preferably Amon Ra).
9) Once in recovery, you need to mount /system, then mount /data.
10) Find the niftyconiptionstweaks.zip you downloaded and flash it.
11) After you flash the zip, go back and unmount /system. Don't mess with the /data because after you flashed the zip, it automatically unmounted the /data for you.
12) Reboot phone and enjoy. Let your phone set at the lock screen for about 2 minutes, unlock and let it set for another 2 minutes to let it settle in. Your phone will become dramatically smoother after about an hour.
UPDATE:
Nifty Coniptions Tweaks
Updated niftyconitpionstweaks. Install just as you would before and follow directions as posted above. I got rid of some unnecessary settings in the scripts. Also your sdcard read ahead speed will change to 512kb which is the optimal value for the evo.

The Legit Zip
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40376256/Nifty-v1.01/TheLegitZip.zip
Here is The Legit Zip I just put together. This has the same settings as the V6 Supercharger on option 8 and the Kickasskernalizer. I did not change any values to these so its the same as installing those two scipts manually. Again, I did not write these scripts, I just put them into a tweak bundle to make it easier to install. Thanks to zepplinrox for making the V6 supercharger and the Kickasskernalizer. To install this, follow the same instructions in the first post.
To see if the settings stuck, download Rom Toolbox Pro and go to the performance tab, Kernel tweaks or Sysctl Tweaks (depending on what version of the application you have) and see if it reads as Min Free KBytes - 4096, Dirty Ratio - 95, Dirty Background Ratio - 60, VFS Cache Pressure - 10. Then go to the Auto Memory Manager and see if it reads as 6,12,150,165,180,200.
If you would like me to add another version of the V6 Supercharger just let me know.
Have fun and hit that thanks button if you like it.

I have modified zxz0O0's script for rooting to just kill the SONY RIC, not upload towelroot and stuff.
This is so you can mount /system, modify platform.xml to have full access to microSD, install xposed, etc.
It works OK (as far as I can tell, I am not an expert).
CHANGELOG:
Version 2:
Removed even more unnecessary files

PC. Windows only.
Anyone who can confirm it working? And with no extra features.. Malware etc?
Sorry for my ignorance....but can anyone explain what RIC is and why do we want to kill it ???

Here it goes.
As far as I know, Sony RIC is a kernel module that manages security, but somebody may correct me on that.
The "/system" partition i.e. folder on a Sony Xperia phone cannot be written to, if you don't disable it.
Without writing to the /system, you cannot:
Modify the .xml that enables apps to write to the microSD card, which is disabled by default in kitkat (look at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix).
Install the xposed framework
Modify files in the /system partition for any other purposes.
The usage is as follows:
Get a ftf file for your Z2
Modify it using PRFCreator by using this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/general/4-4-4-creating-rooted-update-package-t2933155
Flash the phone using the recovery with the generated .zip file.
Make sure USB debugging is enabled on your phone, together with Allow mock locations (in Developer options), and that you have adb etc. istalled
Plug the phone, say yes to USB debugging query.
Run the script to kill RIC.
Enjoy.

You Sir are a gentleman and a scholar.
newb-asking-stuff-now^^
Hi there,
Im planing to do this "make ur own pre-rooted update" thing for my Z2 to get this annoying "there is an update available" message away, and maybe it also offers some nice features^^
the thing is this Z2 is my first smartphone in general (tried them in the first gen and hated those commercial-bombers xD so it took me a long while to give it a new try)
so Im not very much into rooting and so on.... I dont even know exactly how I managed to root my actual phone xD but yeah anyhow I did it with a tutorial from xda.....
what i want to ask is.... is this ric-killing really needed? as I said I dunno how exactly I did root for my 4.4.2 but I never had issues with using my SD-card or such..... never heard bout RIC before this thread here aswell.....
what is this for and does everyone need this?
....atleast how does it come that this seems to be needed with the 4.4.4 but wasnt needed on 4.4.2? or why did I never hear bout it?
(my root went something like this: using any batch-file, flashing triple-recovery twpr, cwm, and something I dont remember^^ after that rebooting several times and again flashing something from recovery.... but never there was something stated like RIC.... only TA-Backup had to be made tough Locked bootloader as this scares the **** out of me xD)
Will this work on any Sony device or just Z2?

Not really needed, no. But if you want your navigation software (Sygic, Here maps etc) or custom cameras (from the playstore) to save files to the microSD, it becomes necessary. Thank Google for instituting the silly policy with KitKat. I think they reverted it in Lollipop.

Hey bro, It works perfectly fine. I tested it on Z1C and it worked perfectly. :highfive:
just for complete understatement...
So I am actually in lack of some kind of permission as I never did this with my actual ROM? Would this allow me to move apps and just everything I desire and manage to turn on rwrwrw on the external SD?
(or is this not even part of ROM? Im not even clear bout whats included in kernel or ROM, and no idea what exactly is contained in firmware then xD anyhow I know ofcourse what those are but just can never find a explanation what differs those wich I could remember^^ Isnt it in principal all of them are part of the ReadOnlyMemory?)
Tough Im able to use foldermount and link2sd?
is this here then only usefull for "regular.no.root.required.apps" wich dont take advantage of su, or how does it come, that I read bout this kitkat.sd.killing.move but still never found the phrase RIC on my huge googling.expiditions....
(luckily knew this before purchase of a 128gb card and could go for the smaller 32gb wich is more than enough for pictures music and vids xD)
Works perfectly. I was upgraded to 4.4.4 via OTA and I was able to save the root but I wasn't able to mount system r/w. Now everything works perfectly.

But in future with Lollipop update, I think Sony will let us move apps to SD, in AOSP(CM) builds they have the option to move the apps to SD.
So I discoverd now whats this for, I found out if an app wich doesnt make use of SU wants to write on SD it fails.... I didnt get it cuz I just let make apps use of SD wich anywaye do use SU ....
Only thing Im still wondering about is why can the stock foto.app (sony) write to SD1 and other apps can not? As I know sony.foto never asked for root.permissions^^
Trouble with Google
I have used your software and my phone is full rooted. Unfortunately, OK Google won't work anymore and when I speak, it did't search. What should I do now? Sorry for my bad English.
so, can you explain step by step how to use this?

My first ROM upload ... hope everything's all right!
I generated this and was asked me to upload it.
I created it via Xperifirm / Flashtool->FTF / PRFCreator->ZIP
I cleared cache and Dalvic and flashed it over my existing ROM (23.4.A.1.232)
Kept root and recovery, didn't lose and apps or data, all seems OK so far.
Stagefright detector gives all green, was one red before.
--- I had to download and run the "SDFix" app from the playstore

Well, I found one problem this morining - Titanium backup failed overnight with an "Insufficient storage space" error.
Looking at the the "Backup location" in TB, it said "This folder is not writable"
After some googling I discovered I needed to re-enable write access for TB....
In Titanium backup ...
/Menu/preferences/Backup folder location
click on "Storage provider"
choose "DocumentProvider storage"
Select the external SD card and enable access to it.
It worked fine after that.
--- alternatively, download and run the "SDFix" app from the playstore
--- This makes the SDcard writeable by all Apps and fixes some other probs I found.
Beat me to it, Nice release though.

Although some said that they have issues with 3G in my uploaded DE too, do try to wipe cache/dalvik, but no factory reset is necessary though.
There is a service "R2Rclient" or something that connects to the internet, and it might get block if you have a firewall on the device, like AFWall+, disable it.
Try to manually select: provider, APNs
Try to set all to Auto: provider, APNs
Try to find your providers settings on their website and create an APN like that.

Ask your telco.
do you have this rom with fully deodex
This is tested on NEMESIS NOUGAT S8 1.0 but it also should work on STOCK ROMs.
You will need:
- Root
- Magisk
- V4A 2.5.0.5 APK (attached below)
- audio_effects.conf file (attached below)
- Root Explorer or some file browser app
- Titanium Backup (not necessary)
With Titanium Backup you must freeze SoundAlive app, if you don't have Titanium Backup, then you will have to delete the app. -> go to /system/priv-app/SoundAlive_51/ and delete the .apk file.
Copy audio_effects.conf to /system/vendor/etc and overwrite if prompted.
Install V4A .apk (don't open app yet) then go to Magisk -> Downloads and search for Viper4Android, download and install module, reboot.
If all went correctly, you should have Viper for Android installed on your S8/S8+
If you've got any question just leave a comment here, I won't answer PMs!
I'm still confused by this, isn't the DAC in the S8+ actually rated as being really good? So all you'd be doing with Viper is putting it through digital filters which merely alter the sound and don't add any quality...?
You could save yourself some trouble and just flash the arise audio zip

Wow, thanks for the link! One more question, I can simply flash it through the recovery right? Any special steps that I should know of?

Viper is easily the best EQ system out there. I wouldn't have a phone without it, the difference is vast.

yes, yes it is.
I like how Viper is now integrated (baked) into my settings as well, that's pretty cool!
anyways... have you guys tried tasker with Viper yet?
So i have Viper set up so that when it connects to a particular bluetooth device it auto-loads my pre-configured audio Profile for that device... I have a diffent Profile for the car, home stereo and different headphones i use. It also upon connection auto adjusts media volume to max volume for bluetooth. Additionally, its also programmed to auto close my media apps and turn off bluetooth once the connected bluetooth device is powered off (useful for getting out of the car) I've also got it programmed to auto start Pandora, load my Viper Profile for when I get into the car.
(lmfao about people who say root and unlock bl is redundant, they really have no idea!)

Settings, sounds and vibration, volume, 3 dots right top. Turn on and set to full limit.

okay, so it seems I dont need to do this, seems the mod im using bakes Viper into settings and overides this.
Wait, there is already a root? Even with a locked bootloader?

I still can't get this to work on stock ROM. Viper status still says processing = no. I've renamed soundalive, installed viper and the magisk module and copied over the .conf file but something keeps overwriting it (I assume the magisk module) to a version that's not the same as the one in your zip file. Any ideas?

Your audio_effects.conf file gets replaced after reboot?

Yes. I've just checked the magisk log and it says "replace vendor/etc/audio_effects.conf". The first line starts
libraries {
v4a_fx {
path /system/lib/soundfx/libv4a_fx_ics.so
}
and then it continues with the rest of the soundalive references.
How are you people rooting this phone?
