For 4.3 custom ROMs the makoz20i bootloader is not required, but the .84 radio is required.

It's recommended to upgrade to the makoz20i bootloader to be ready for KeyLimePie.
Flash the radio and bootloader first, then flash the ROM, Gapps, and SuperSU (if not included in the ROM).

Hey guys, is there any kernel which works on the rooted stock 4.4.2 rom?
I would like to save battery and increase performance, is that possible?

Gravity Box if you are comfortable using Xposed.
I am allready using the gravity-box, but is there something that can be flashed permanently?

you can try some custom roms. Some of them has this feature built in.
So pretty much as title states.. just wanted to find out whether I'd have to re-root the phone and if I would lose LTE (I think I would lose LTE, but not sure about root)? Also, overall, is 4.4 worth upgrading to?
thanks lots!
IMHO update is definitely worth it. You'll lose root and LTE. But you can easily just reroot and flash a LTE radio.

This device is so easy to root don't worry about it. Do you have a custom recovery? If so find the update.zip. If you don't try the ota. If you've changed system files out probably won't work but if you haven't it will

i actually used to have 4.3 on this nexus, but reverted back to 4.2 because when i did it, you couldn't have LTE with 4.3.. so you saying you can flash the radio with 4.4 now?
