Heya, new to fiddling with root files but really wanted to get rid of camera click. Followed advice about renaming camera_click.ogg in terminal Emulator using:
ADB shell
SU
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
mv /system/media/audio/ui/camer_click.ogg /system/media/audio/ui/camera_click.ogg.old
(source: www droidforums net/forum/droid-hacks/23107-droid-remove-camera-click-shutter-sound html) - sorry new poster not allowed to post url
Now have issue when open stock camera and vid in Motorola Atrix (gingerbread 2.2.2) where:
1) camera opens, but have lost all previous images.
2) camera takes silent shot
3) camera 'locks' open and can't return to 'desktop', can't view image taken,, can't access menus etc
Basically camera is stuffed...
is there a solution, is there code to go back and follow some of the other advice in here etc?
It is a setting. What's the point?

it's a setting what's the point? Thanks for taking the time to reply. I did mention this is all new to me. I asked a question because i do't know the answer. It's a swttibg whats the point is hardly helpful.
To anyone else, i'd appreciate any help or advice. As i mentioned i'd just like to undo what i've done usibg script i found on another forum. looking forward, hopefully, to hearing from you!
have you tried to add the following line to local.prop file located in /data?
ro.camera.sound.forced=0
If you don't have the file then just create the file and add it, otherwise append it to the end of file.
File permission is: 0644
Good Luck
I never heard of adding ".old" on the end of the file. I always add ".bak", then reboot. Works everytime.

I was on my phone at the time (tiny keyboard) and was trying to succinctly say that if you open the camera app and touch "settings", there is an option to quiet the click.
When I first read your OP I didn't notice that you identified Gingerbread as v2.2. You are confused. v2.2 was named Froyo (frozen yogurt). Gingerbread is v2.3. My answer relates to Gingerbread. If you are actually on Froyo, I don't remember if the setting was available on that release.
So, in Gingerbread silencing the camera is a setting and there is no point performing internal surgery.
Yep, ok, noob blunder. Novice blunder, amatuer, beginner whatever blunder. Glad you all got a giggle, and thanks for pointing it out. I was told at the shop it's Gingerbread. The About phone states 2.2. So, if that makes it Froyo then great, i've learnt the basics today. Thanks for your help again!
Well re- the settings, froyo or otherwise, yes there is a setting to turn sound off. You turn it to off and it still makes the click sound, volume can't be altered. Hence diving off the deep end and into something i know very little about - internal surgery!!
Live4nyy - is there a simple way to rename to .bak (you see my level of expertise here - none! - in asking).. forward some script for me at all?
or
CSharpHeaven that sounds gr8... any way to explain to a complete novice how to do that?
I thank anyone who sticks with me to reply after this MUCHLY as you know you are dealing with a friking novice
Seriously....why would you want to silence your camera again?
Do you have root? If yes, then you can just use any file manager that has root access, ES File Explorer works I've heard, and just go to the folder where the sound file is (/system/media/audio/ui) and just select to rename the file and add ".bak".

i actually dont want or need to silence it again. my query is how to restore my camera to a mode where it is functional bcs at the moment its stuffed. If theres a simple string to go back that'd be ideal.

Ok, got 'root explorer'... so simple just to enable R/W and rename.. Thanks. Changed to .bak . Seems better, actually appears to take photos and has more functionality than after i ran that script... but
I don't know what that original script did. Here's what using my built in camera is like:
1) Turn Camera on. Opens, appears normal. Take photo fine. Thumbnail (link to camera roll) in bottom corner as per usual, which disappears after a few seconds as per normal.
So far so good.
2) After taking another photo decide to click on thumbnail to open camera roll. Camera Roll opens but says there are no pictures to display. return (via 'back' menu button) and the thumbnail of the images is there again. Ok, weird.
3) Try take another photo... nothing happens, wait a few seconds and camera switches off back to ;desktop'. Try open camera again but no dice. In fact all phone functionality gone, frozen, locked up, including menu buttons below screen. Put phone to sleep by pressing rear button briefly. Press rear button again to awake. Unlock swipe is slow to respond (a few seconds) and then back to main desktop screen. Can once again open camera. Repeat process from dot point 1).
4) next time go to camera roll, this time locks up on camera roll (which has no images to display again). Sleep and wake up camera, slow swipe unlock, can take photos again when open camera. repeat step 1 - 3 again!
5) Sleep, wake up phone. This time straight to gallery instead of camera. Gets stuck telling me it's loading media files. Frozen.
6) sleep- wake - slow swipe unlock. This time to video. Same thing as camera. Frozen.
I could go on.... but im sure the idea is clear!
used root explorer to simply remane camera_click.ogg to original name. Same as above
Tried camera zoom fx app incase it was the built in camera app. This won;t even open - well, it starts but then says i need to force it to close.
Does this need a factory reset??!
Ta
Have you rebooted? Maybe try and go into "Manage Applications" under the "All" tab and find the camera and "clear data"?

Thanks L4NYY.. yep had rebooted. Tried clearing data but all the same
Had a quick look in the internal storage DCIM folder..All files appear to be there. The one vid file has a play button icon. The .jpg's have the android robot icon. I don't know what was there before. Trying to open the files from here freezes the phone.....
Connecting usb and viewing dcim shows that any images taken since the change to camera_click.ogg appear unknown thumnails in the PC explorer..and can't be opened on the PC via USB connection or when stored locally on the PC itself 'can't display this is an empty file' . This is probably all irrelevant but might be useful to someone, somehere...
Have just noticed today that battery was going flat very quickly. Realised since rooting and using that script (can't decipher which) that location services are no longer working, hence apps that provide location services are continually searching and draining battery. Yes i can turn those services off, but wouldrather resolve the issue!
I'm thinking more and more like factory reset Any thoughts?
Just factory reset. Used Astro File Manager to backup apps before hand, which for interest worked well (although did have to reinstall one by one). Of course Appstore keeps a lsit of purchased apps as a failsafe for thsoe.
After rest, reinstalled apps, including Root Manager. Simply followed Live4NYY's advice, renamed camera_click.ogg to camera_click.ogg.bak
All issues described earlier resolved. Camera functional and silent.
just goes to show sometimes you should ask noob questions. I tried following instructions on a post to avoid annoying the experts with a mum-mum dad-dad question! Anyhow, thnaks to live4nyy for taking the time.
Ciao
The ".bak" just stands for "backup". It will essentially hide any file/app and keep it from running (which in turn frees up RAM). So if you had a system app that you don't use you can just add ".bak" and it would be the same as freezing it. It's much safer than deleting files and apps as you can always go back and remove the extension (and reboot) and it will be back to normal.

i cant turn off the camera shutter and focus sound...i tried to replace the camera files in ui folder with silent ones and didn't work..and tried deleting the whole folder and didn't work..tried root apps from play store and still !!
the only app worked is camera mute which is actually mute the phone while in camera application and i didnt like that
there should be an option in the camera settings to turn off the camera shutter sound, unless it's different for the international models?

You need to have Root, but there's a code you can add to your CSC files to enable it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using xda app-developers app
There is an app to turn of camera shutter sound in note 3. It does not require root. PM me for the link [New members can't post links]
There are multiple ways to disable this "feature". Here in EU it isn't allowed to have cameras that don't make sounds when taking a picture because you could sneak pictures from people and so. Basically, the option to turn off sound is implemented in the camera software. But the files initiallizing the app on start up tell the software to show or hide this option. That said, you can try to use an app to disable the stock app sound, you can manually change settings in the files that tell the camera what to do (as easy as adding a line of text or even just changing one bit from 0 to 1 or vice versa) or you can use an Xposed module like wanam where there's an option for this that can easily be toggled.
So far I haven't heard of a method that works if you're not rooted, so root seems to be mandatory if you want to do this.
If root isn't your thing, check out other picture taking apps in google play. There are certainly apps that allow to disable shutter sound, and some of those apps provide more/better camera functionality than the stock app. Dpreview.com is a great photography site which also has a mobile phone section called connect. There you get in depth reviews on phone's cameras and apps from a photographers point of view.
ROUNDUP OF NON-ROOT MODS/APPS/SOLUTIONS
APPS
1. iFont
It uses the native Flipfont system present in the Note to change fonts. You can install any font from a very big list and if you buy the Donate version (which I highly recommend), you can make an installable apk for any font you want. I have already made and shared Roboto L fonts, Comic Sans and Comic Neue.
2. Adblock Plus
Works on WiFi and (if APN settings are edited) on mobile data, blocks apps on browsers and other apps. An excellent solution for ad-blocking on non-routed phones.
2b. An alternative solution that only works for browsing via WiFi networks is Adguard.
3. SMS Backup & Restore
A free app that can backup and restore your messages, no root required. Works flawlessly, I used to it to backup my SMS on my S4 and restore them to my Note 4.
4. Greenify
As mentioned in this thread, Greenify works without root as well. Automatic hibernation is even an option, albeit some issues with "talking calculator" have been mentioned.
5. My Backup
As mentioned here this app is a feature-rich backup solution for non-rooted phones.
6. SD Maid - System Cleaning Tool
This app attempts to make best possible use of its features without root present. It's a tool that cleans up unnecessary files from your phone that apps leave behind.
7. AutoStart - No root
As the name suggests, this app lets you select which applications you want to auto start after phone boot-up and it works on all phones/tablets without root permission. You can also choose one or multiple apps to auto-launch at boot with customisable delay values.
8. Busybox (No Root)
For advanced users who want to run busybox commands on their phones via the Android Terminal Emulator app.
9. Call Recorder
Call recording app that uses the Samsung standard API therefore does not require root access. It is a bit pricey but well worth the money for people who need that feature. There's a full-featured trial available from XDA so you can try before you buy.
9b. There is also a free alternative that has been reported to work well on the Note 4, AndroRec Free.
9c. Another great free alternative is Automatic Call Recorder, with the added bonus that it can record in better formats, like mp3 or wav, save on the SD card and the option for prompt to "Save or Delete" at the end of every call.
10. NoRoot Firewall
Firewall without root. Host name/domain name filtering, simple interface, fine-grained access control and no suspicious permissions on the app itself.
11. Better Wifi On/Off
A free, fully featured, ad-supported app that aims at giving you the control of the Wifi state, optimizing your battery life without losing on user experience. In theory, Wifi is less power hungry than 3G but some apps behave differently when Wifi is on (DropBox / Google+ uploads, Google Maps location caching) and the well known wlan_rx kernel wakelock is a symptom of wakeups caused by uncontrolled Wifi hotspots. The Wifi sleep policy is not working consistently and does not solve all the above problems, enter this app.
12. Helium - App Sync and Backup
Helium is the missing app sync and backup solution for Android and doe not require root. You can backup both your apps and their data to your SD card or cloud storage and sync them from your other Android devices. You need access to a computer for a brief USB connection and then you're good to go.
13. Desktop VisualizeR
Application that allows you to personalize your home screen by creating icons or widgets with your favorite photos or images, works on any launcher, even TW!
14. FREE screen recorder NO ROOT
Recordable is the easy way to create screen recordings without root. The free version adds a watermark on the recordings and limits frame rate to 8fps, but is otherwise fully functional. A Windows, Mac or Linux computer required to complete the installation (like with Helium Backup), but after this it's not needed to make screen recordings.
MODIFICATIONS
1. Full Screen Immersive Mode
Full screen immersive mode in any application or game, root is not required.
2.Enable AirView and AirGesture
2b. Instead of Nova Launcher, you can use the QuickShortcutMaker app to create any shortcut directly on the Touchwiz launcher.
3. MW-Pen App Enabler
This app that enables apps for multiwindow and/or pen window without rooted access. The only limitations are that it does not work for system apps and that enabled apps can not be updated. To update them, you need to uninstall the enabled app first, install the updated app and run it through the enabler app again.
4. Mont Blanc digital content
A guide on how to get the extra Mont blanc pens for the S Note and the two exclusive Mont Blanc wallpapers and unlock effect..
5. QuickClick
Start any action (flashlight, system toggles, media controls, etc) with a sequence of volume buttons clicks.
6. Spen Toolbox
A wonderful little app that extends the functionality of the S-Pen, by offering options for: turning the screen off when you attach the pen, changing the detach and attach sounds, creating a custom shortcut popup to appear on detach, and many more!
7. No root and want to modify your DPI? You can!
Thanks to PizzaSauce, we have a way to modify DPI without root. All you need is access to a Windows PC. Changes persist after reboot too.
If you don't want to install the whole Android SDK, you could use this tool to install ADB, which is all that is needed for this mod.
Hello all!
I recently got my Note 4 and it's by far the best device I've ever owned.
I started this thread because I decided not to root the phone -at least for now. Even though, I've been rooting and heavily modding all my phones in the past.
My reasons are:
1. Warranty.
I know that you can flash a stock firmware before handing it to service and that KNOX counter doesn't matter (I've had my Note 10.1 with a tripped counter repaired twice under warranty). However, I'd like for once to be able to just send my phone to service if need be, without the extra hassle of concealing the tweaking I've done.
2. S-Pen.
I know that rooting doesn't affect the S-Pen functionality, however, the use of the Pen makes custom ROMS such as AOSP and CM useless to me. I actually use the S-Pen heavily and it was one of the reasons I bought the phone. There are of course custom TW ROMS but to be honest, and with no intention to offend anyone, they are not my cup of tea.
3. Stability.
This one will seem weird to many, but it's my personal experience. This is the 4th Samsung device I own (SGS3, SGS4, Note 10.1, Note 4) and with the previous three I noticed that when I rooted and enthusiastically started "debloating", things started to turn unstable. And I have never, ever noticed any improvement in battery life. I know it sounds odd, but it is true to me. The Note 4 gives you the option to disable a lot of preinstalled apps anyway.
4. Lollipop.
I want to get the update that was meant for my region via OTA, no cables necessary. Plus I believe that all the annoyances I rectified with root (mainly theming, such as Tinted Statusbar) will be solved in Lollipop. Again, that's my opinion and personal taste.
Now do I miss root? Hell, yeah! Why?
1. ADS ADS ADS...
Ads everywhere! I have been paying for my apps and I am not using pirated software at all. And I gladly donate/pay for ads to be removed and premium features for apps I really love. However, there are apps that either don't offer an a ad-free option or they charge an insane amount for ad removal. I know developers need to make revenue, but there's nothing uglier than an ad banner. Seriously.
2. Tinted statusbar.
And generally Xposed.
3. Call recording.
I liked the native call recording function of the TW dialer, no app comes close from what I've seen.

I decided not to root as well. I'm using the note 4 as my backup phone with the oneplus one as my DD. I don't want to root until an option to root without tripping knox is available. I'm very curious to know what options are avaailable to non rooted phones. Thanks for starting this thread. Great idea.
3. Call recording.
I liked the native call recording function of the TW dialer, no app comes close from what I've seen.
Try this app, by an actual XDA dev, it works great. Its very polished, very native looking/behaving app.

Tested and working great without root.
My reason not to root note4 is lollipop upgrade from ota too
I think this note4 is good enough for me except ads like you said
For me I need root to
- Change the very bad Arabic font
- Use proxy applications
- Be able to stop WifiKill which they use heavily over here
- Use Wanam Xposed mostly for Long press back button to kill App
- Freeze all the useless pre-installed apps I never use eating memory and battery, I need maximum memory for multitasking
- Stop auto startup of other un needed apps
well I guess these may not be important to you

The font is something I also miss, Roboto has been vastly improved for Lollipop. So I'm waiting for the big update.

There is a way for non-rooted phones to block ads only on WiFi though on both WiFi and mobile data connections, using an app called Adblock Plus.

Hi guys,
It is my first post although I had been lurking for a while now. Interesting thread, I didn't root my Note 4 as well for all the reasons mentioned above. What I miss most is App Opps or XPrivacy. I find it hard to install all the applications I want to try because of the ridiculous amount of permissions required. Other than that I don't miss much. The phone is pretty awesome.
I was forced to root because I had app data on another device that couldn't be moved, even through ADB.
But, Xposed,Titanium Backup, Adaway , greenify and a few others make rooting well worth the risk (once you know your devices hardware is good ).

Have you tried installing Viper and see if it works? Because a quick Google search gave me these:
If you're using a Samsung device, you're lucky because you actually don't need root to install the Viper4Android! Only thing you need to do is to install the app as usual and change the sound effect in*settings > sound > music effect*to Viper4Android. Be sure you don't use the TouchWiz stock player because it may not work.

...And from the official XDA thread:
Setup your Device
For Samsung devices,
1. Try install V4A as user app instead of system app if the latter failed doesn't work.
2. Use Normal Mode and select V4A FX in Settings>Sound>Music Effects.
3. If don't work, use another player rather than Samsung stock Music.

Jumping on the band wagon here too... I've had many android devices, all rooted; most recently an S4 running CM. The reason I bought the Note was for the stylus and note taking abilities. Very happy with the speed and stability so far in stock form although the battery life sucks. Dropbox was a major drainer so killed that. I need to selective disable some of the other stock apps but so far not really missing much requiring root other than titanium backup...

Titanium Backup is also high on my list, however, I found SMS Backup & Restore works perfectly for messages (see OP). That's something!
Thanks for this lovely thread. Getting Adblock without root feels like an early Christmas. Would like to add that "My Backup" backs up SMS and much more without root. It also now backs up to Dropbox which is lovely (at least the Pro version does).

Hey guys, G4 is a great device, right? But it is relatively weak in its software department. So I am creating this thread so that you can share yr wish which should be in G4 & I will try to gather & post them on a regular basis. Someday some devs may port or create those for us, right? Nothing to lose. So here's the TOP FEATURES I & others would love to have in G4:
1. Root & unlocked bootloader obviously
2. Swipe to sleep on nav bar
3. Integrated theme engine
4. HQ FB profile pictures sync
5. Long press back button to kill app.
6. Bluetooth audio volume fix
7. Overall RAM optimization
Dont know about top 5 but root is a must, themes would be really nice, better battery saver options really big plus and long press app kill would be nice. One other would be just general optimisation of apps and batterylife and a fix for that horrible bluetooth audio. There are now too many stupid mistakes and hindsights.
regarding back to kill...
does the stock rom you're running allow enabling of developer settings via multi clicking the build date? or is that only on custom roms? you can enable back to kill in there if you can access it.
yeah, i haven't run any stock software for years so i don't even know if dev settings is accessible. ?

I am still waiting for the root & custom recovery, let alone the custom Roms. There is no option in stock lollipop ROMs to kill app by long pressing back button.
Hi guys, i just realized that the camera app of this phone is really poor and lacks even basic options like selecting video/photo resolution/megapixels. Is there any modified version of the app that adds these options? If not what's the most recommended app to get the most out of this beasts camera?

Google camera can be a pretty good option, I also use filmic pro if you want to get full control of your camera.

Thanks man. Do these options you mentioned support all 3 rear cameras of the phone to the fullest? Any working apk for Google camera that is recommended working for OP7T Pro?

I wanna say the the Google camera supports all three with a custom xml file. It can be found on xda under GCam.. I can't find it right now for whatever reason, but a quick Google search will get you there
How I just installed GCam

So here's how I just installed it on my 7tProMc5G.
First with Telegram installed, look for "GCam Finder [BOT]"
This is a menu driven space, at the bottom click "GCam Download", new buttons appear, select phone manufacturer (OnePlus) and phone (OnePlus 7/T/Pro)
Then you'll see instructions and buttons to download APK and XML. Download both. (You're now done with Telegram, but there is some good info in the FAQ.)
Once you've done that I went to the notification of the download and installed the apk from there, you might be able to install from File Manager.
Once that's done the apk is installed, but you want to add the xml. This will go into a specific folder, which can vary, so do the below to make it easier.
Open Gcam. It's just called Camera, but has a different icon from the OnePlus. (It recognized the three cameras, and seemed to work ok, but just in case I decided to install the downloaded xml.)
From the top of the viewfinder, swipe down to open the options (flash, hdr, etc.)
Click the little settings icon at the bottom of the options window.
Scroll to the bottom of the Settings and select Configs.
Click on Save and enter a save name, anything will work, you're just making a config so that GCam makes all the folders you need.
Now back out of the app and go to file manager.
Go to Download and find the .xml file, copy it to the clipboard.
Go up to Internal Storage and find the newly created GCam folder, and the Configs folder inside it (mine was called Configs7)
Put the downloaded .xml file in there, you should also see the one you just created.
Now go back to GCam and in the bottom area where the three buttons are, double-tap to the right of the "last picture" button. You should get a dialogue allowing you to load a config, choose the downloaded .xml.
When I did that the three "zoom" options changed, this will be based on which xml you download.
I checked and NightSight seemed to work, also while in NightSight scroll down from the top and Astrophotography gets turned on.
Kinda neat. I'm digging this phone, it's wicked fast. I bought it for the 12G RAM, I didn't even think 5G would work, seems to though.
I simply installed urynx05's lastest 2.3 Gcam on my unrooted 7t Pro Mclaren (I'm waiting for my unlock.bin) and all the cameras work without any issues. No need to use any xml's to get everything working, just enable the aux cams in settings. Just Google gcam urynx05 and the you'll find it.
