Hi all
since the video quality is very good on the Note 3, I've been taking lots of videos, but now want to take a frame from the videos I've taken and use it for a photo.
is there an app that can take a frame and save it at a high quality image?
Thanks

Just screenshot when paused.
4K is another story tho, but imho the quality isnt all that'when filming in 4k. (played on 4k 84" screen at local hardware shop)
I always do that in Adobe Premiere Pro... Sony Vegas can do it as well. But those are professional video editing tools for the PC. You could try the default one on Windows (What's it called..)

I've just videoe my TV screen (with ceiling light above me too)
The stock camera app recording was fuzzy around the edge (grainy) and the TV picture wasn't that clear at all (was half zoomed in)
So then I used the LG camera app. Turned FPS to 60 and rate to 10mbit... EPIC!
Yes it uses more space, but the quality is amazing!
Anybody wanting to test video capability, download LG camera app, set FPS to 60 and check it out! (it doesn't look, great until you start recording)
Am just uploading a sample, video which is on highest settings in LG camera app. It's a whopping 250mb for just under a minute!!

yeah i just checked and installed it, its the middle of the night here so il test properly tomorrow, i remember using this app a long time ago when i had my htc sensation.
Here's the sample

what video settings did you use, what bitrate did you use. the samples good for the condition, i think we need to test this in normal daylight to see what it can really do. I took a video 32 seconds and it was 80mb

If this is the app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rubberbigpepper.lgCamera&hl=en
then 60fps not supported, I just checked it out, 1 file on 30fps and 17mbit, the other file at 60fps and at 60mbit or whatever it was. Both files are at 29fps, so until sony adds a [email protected], I don't think it will be supported.

That is something else, fps means frames per second and i have just checked on my pc and the videos max out at 30.1fps.
Well in this case Hz and fps actually are the same, as long as we are talking about the captured framerate and not the outputted one, which can very well differ.
Still you're right! MX Player is detecting bull****, Media Info on my PC does show 29,716 fps.
Would have liked it to by different though, 60fps would have been great for some slowmo action

nah im sorry Hz and fps are 2 completly different things.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hertz
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frame_rate
MX player indicated correctly, it just didnt show you fps
Hz describes a frequency and just means "per second" and normally when I use it to describe framerates people do understand what I mean, even if fps is the better word
If you take a look at my earlier Screenshot you will see that MX Player never claimed it to be Hz, it just says "Bildfrequenz", which means framerate, and does not use any unit.
you're right, the quality seems much better with lgCamera. :good:
EDIT: also took some pictures but the quality of them does not seem to be improved.
Well either way, whether it improves FPS or not (which I didn't check it.actually did), it does improve the video massively. That video was captured using the highest bitrate, which is what defines the quality of the video
video. You don't have to use maximum setting all the time, but it truly is much better than the stock app.
So in this video I used a tripod which took some amazing video. But I also took 4k video while driving (I was not driving) and the camera did a good job at keeping a still video. There was still a lot of movement but it shows less in the video then there actually was. I captured mainly movement to see how the camera could keep up with it.

True, but the camera is the same so it still goes for the S6 itself. Both phones are equal when it comes to camera.
Do you know if the 4k video was encoded with the native h.265 encoder rather than the older h.264? The exynos soc supports native h.265 encode / decode which should help with 4k video size.

Here is a utility that can show you details about your media file. Just point it to the raw video file that was generated by the s6. By the time it gets uploaded to youtube, it is transcoded so no way to tell the native encode format prior to the conversion on youtube.
One of the strong features of the new chips, including the 810 are it's ability to natively encode and decode h.265. This is remarkable as even intel chips cannot completely hw encode+decode the new format. The newer nvidia/amd cards are making progress towards h.265. So I hope you can appreciate that little device in your hands can do this. But whether it actually does and makes use of it is the question. I hope you indulge us.
The quality of the focus is amazing.

Is there a way that we can remove the limit of the video recordings in the camera?
just picked up a s8 over the weekend and ran into this problem. wondering if you found a solution? the only thing i have come across is to use Open Camera which will automatically resume after the 10min break (records a new clip) but I've found the 60fps video quality to be less than satisfactory. i may have to try and up the bitrate to see if that makes a difference.

If you're using the stock Samsung camera app, the only way is through custom roms, outside of that like mentioned there are other apps but you are losing quality
I'm new to the s8, but with my previous phones, the 10 minute limit was only on 4k video. If I dropped the resolution to lower it was unlimited.
Today I'm gonna show you that how you could get 240/480/960 fps smooth slowmotion on your device. You don't need to have root or a PC just your device and an application.
App : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.danielkorgel.SmoothActionCamSlowmo
( In no way I'm claiming that this app is my intellectual property, I'm just sharing what this app is capable of. )
Just follow the steps in the video below.
For all of you who are skeptical whether this method actually works or this video is just a clickbait. Before you watch this video and get disappointed later. I would like to tell you that how this thing actually works.
First of all you will need to install the app I linked. Then record a video and btw the video you record can be of any frame rate or resolution, you can even produce a "smooth" slow motion video out of a 4k video you recorded. But the final result would be much better if you record at the highest possible frame rate as the app would have more information to work with.
Now after you've set up the app as I showed you in the video, select the video file you recorded. Now after doing other steps click on export, this process would take time depending on fps, resolution, length of the video and how much you slow it down. Eg. A 720p 120fps slow mo video of around 5 seconds took around 2 minutes to export. The way this app works is that first it takes two frames, then guessing what the the frame in between them would've looked like renders it, this process is called motion interpolation. Google this term to know better. Btw professional videographers use this method too in Adobe premiere pro on PC's.
The reason I chose to show how to show the setting up and method of using this app using a video because first of all the the method of setting up the app is easier to understand by a video and as this whole process off exporting takes time so with this video showed you the proof that what I'm telling you all is true.
( In no way this app is my intellectual property and in no way I'm related or know the developer personally. I just found about this app due to my habit of trying different apps and I'm sharing what this app does as I wasn't able to find any other app capable of motion interpolation.)
I've used this. It's good for what it is but it's not true slow-mo. Expect a LOT of warping artifacts.

This has been bugging the hell out of me since I got this phone. All the reviews made such a huge deal out of the phones camera quality and capabilities. But upon using it myself.. I am not all that impressed. When I record a video in say 1280x720, the resulting video always looks like it was recorded in say 800x450 or something along those lines. No matter what bitrate I choose, it looks like a lower resolution. You can't zoom the video hardly without it degrading. Go ahead, try zooming on some text in 720P. Now compare it to 720P on some other phone. Now, when I record in say 1920x1080, the resulting video looks like it was recorded in 720p, not 1080.
I have 720p videos I recorded from my Galaxy S4 that look FAR FAR better than so called 720p on the V20. It seems like the camera on the V20 is UPSCALING the video recording output to the next highest resolution than what is ACTUALLY being recorded. 720p appears as 480p, 1080p appears as 720p etc. As someone who is picky about quality, this has been a major blow since I got this phone. I am surprised no one has ever posted about this.

Iv noticed it, but I brushed it off as I felt nothing could be done to fix by me or other devs that I am/was aware of. Now that I think if it more from your words, maybe could be fixed by overclocking the 4k to 6k, or 8k, to get a 4k resolution. Need root to try this though.
Well, at least I'm not the only one who noticed. Is it the same way on Oreo? I mean, did the update "fix" anything related to video recording resolution or is it still upscaled? (I'm still on 7.0 Nougat for battery reasons, but if 8.0 has a video improvement.. well, game changer). This seems like false advertising meant to try and push 4k capability when it really couldn't. If the camera really isn't capturing 4K, then does that mean it would be too much a burden on the hardware to actually be pulling 30 4k FPS ...VS 30 1080P FPS upscaled to 4K?
Are you talking about the quality on Google photos, or the out of camera quality?
have you tried exporting it to your computer via USB? Cos, for some reason the quality and resolution are lower on G Photos.

I don't think a burden but more of how's it's coded. 4K on tripod is hard to tell vs 1080p. Note 3 was same way. Oreo cam may be better but I can't really tell. Idk why 16mp is not fully utilized for 4K 16:9 either. Coding that I personally don't know how to do. Slow mo don't even have sound via stock cam.

Camera output. That is, the resulting video file from the camera after pressing record button.
I know there is a loss of quality from compression. But it's not compression artifacts causing this. Bitrate doesn't make any difference. You can clearly see the video detail is not even close to what it says it is. I especially noticed this with text. I was recording a video while in a car. There was a car maybe 1-2 car lengths ahead. One can easily read the license plate. In the recorded 1280x720 video, I could NOT make out the plate at all. You'd thought I recorded in 960x540 or close. It's rather blurry. I think that's why LG added all that oversharpening.
I even set it to take photos at 1280x720. And even with high jpg compression zoomed/cropped, it doesn't look like the 1280x720 zoomed/cropped video of the same exact item being photo'd.
Been using Mark Harmons OpenCamera and trying all sorts of video bitrates. Then changing photo save resolution. I found that a photo resolution of between 960x540 and 800x480 (cropped) looks very similar to what a cropped 720P video appears. It seems as if there is some kind of preprocessing going on with the image that makes it appear extremely muddy (smudged blurry detail cropped). Nothing at all changed with the quality whether the bitrate was set at 5Mbps or 50Mbps. Quality remained unchanged.

Sounds like Oreo update isn't worth the trouble. As far as how it's coded... I think it's the awful preprocessing muddying up the image detail as I mentioned above. Using massively high bitrates does no good at all.
4K on tripod VS 1080 on tripod is quite noticeable on the V20 due to the appearance of upscaling (or horrible preprocessing.. whichever it is).
I didn't know Slo-Mo was supposed to have sound. I mean, the option to enable sound would be interesting (say a time-stretched audio instead of slowed down pitch).

Who wouldn't want sound with slow mo? That's like no sound with regular video lol.
LG also made it to where 4k can barely be done via third party. Gcam can't...Open Cam can. Nothing can be done without root tho. Even then... limitations upon availability and know how. Manual setting is your best bet. Auto is well...auto, so definitely postprocessing will be involved and yes it's not the best, unless fixed with some mod, even if that works. LG hardcoded lockdowns. Camera firmware can be possible tweaked...but I do not know how.
