Hi guys, i'm planning to buy an Galaxy S4 Value Edition Model 9515L (L from Latin, probably southamerican-friendly frequencies) (The only difference i guess is the back cover and it comes with 4.4) and i want to know if i can install S4 9505 ROMS on it, is there any problem? Plus, is there also a root for it?
No, you can't flash those roms.
What actually is the difference between a regular S4 and a 'Value' S4. pdadb.net shows they have pretty much identical specs?!

even if the hardware is the same? There are alot of unified ROMs for several défices, isnt there ANY way of converting ROMS to work on value edition? Or at least its possible to root the phone?
I believe that the ROMs may work since the unified builds work, however does it have LTE?

Yes, its the SAME hardware as the Galaxy S4 LTE, the only difference is that it comes with 4.4 instead of 4.2.2
Root I9515 with CF-Autoroot file for I9505

I just rooted my I9515 with the I9505 CF-Autoroot file. :good: It all ran quick and easy, as if they really were the same phone. Haven't tried any customs roms yet, so I can't say anything about them. The rooting, although, is flawless so far.

so, if root works, everything that you flash that is not a ROM that is supposed to work on 9505 will work on 9515?

I'd be very cautious on jumping to that general conclusion.
Although the CF-Autoroot for I9505 has worked in my device, when I flashed the I9505 TWRP (2.7), I couldn't use it because the touch screen didn't work. Then I tried I9505 CWM (6.0.4.7, non-tocuh), and everything was smooth and functional.
Later, I flashed Slimkat 5 (which is supposed to be S4 LTE unified, I9505 included, but obviously not for the I9515 yet), but the touch hasn't responded as well. After a few minutes being really afraid I'd burned the digitizer for good :crying:, I was able to flash the stock I9515 rom and the touch went back to life! :victory:
So, it seems that flashing I9505 stuff (even custom roms) in the I9515 is possible, but the touch doesn't work. That is just a first impression based in my quick experience in this matter, though.

This times a thousand!
It's totally plausible that the 9505 is completely interchangable with the 9515.
It's also totally plausible that flashing a 9505 recovery on the 9515 will brick it beyond all repair.
And then its plausible that some things are compatible but others aren't without any pattern to figure it out by. (CWM Recovery might be fine but TWRP might brick it, etc)
It's your phone so you can do whatever you want. Lord knows that the vast majority of hacks to gain root (and various other things) have been tested by someone manning up and just rolling the dice on their phone to see if it works or bricks it. So feel free to try it, but be very careful, research first, and know that nothing is guarenteed until AFTER it flashed successfully and boots.

That is absolutely true!
There is at least one legitimate reason for devices being sold without straight forward root access: consumers safety, that is, avoiding them to brick their devices tweaking something they don't fully know or understand. That way, granting root access is a risk itself, and the ones which decide to do it should be aware of those risks (and be responsible for the consequences). And, if using a rooting procedure to your specific device is a risk itself, trying stuff for a different (albeit similar) one is a risk even bigger!
In my case, I ended up with a european phone I can't use in Brazil, what made me try and unlock it by all means, including the very risky ones. And, even though I'm far from having any deep linux/android knowledge, I know exactly the risks of what I'm doing, and things are really like giving stuff a try and rolling the dice.
That is the experience I'm sharing in this thread, but, like Skipjacks advised, be very careful before trying anything - and, when you do, be aware of the risks involved.

Hm... So, there are touchscreen drivers for each ROM(device) right? So if devs make ROMS with 9515 drivers maybe we could get it working?
I really can't understand that... the phone is almost exact like the original S4. EVERY spec besides frequencies, why there is so much difference?

I'd love to see xda experts developing I9515 stuff, for I'm sure they would work just fine, but I'm afraid this might not happen. This S4 version is kind of a last selling one, and, with the new devices coming out, devs may not be interested in working in a dated - and probably not so spread - version.
Regarding the specs, I do think that, if we could flash the hole I9505 software, and not only a main kernel file, maybe we could get everything working. Nevertheless, I don't know where to get those files, nor how I could do that through Odin, or even how to bypass the write protection enabled bootloader.

So would I...
Today I tried a different 9505 ROM (Omega v31) in my 9515. Just like the other time, the installation went ok (albeit tough to go through, because AROMA didn't respond to touch), but, after the device rebooted, I couldn't get the touch screen to work as well. Adding this new experience to the previous ones, I think it's reasonable to state that, at least so far, the main incompatibility regarding the 9505 and the 9515 is the touch screen drivers...
Could any dev help us out here? Any possibility of custom recovery and roms for the I9515?
Hey there!! I don' t have an s4 anymore and i guess this is basically the reason you don' t see any custom rom for s4VE.. all has a 9505 or an s5 now..
Anyway.. when i had the s4 i tried to build a rom for the 9515 and sent to a tester.. unfortunately it didn' t boot.. so i guess it was due yo the kernel.. so i thought.. why not to flash the single system and leave the stock, altready rooted kernel?.. and believe me i would have bet my car it should have worked.. but it didn' t ?? even if the same rom worked as a charme on my s4 with 9505 kernel modules.. ?
So to @Rune Walker if you' re up for a test i would really love to have a second attempt, given that you already know and tested how to recover... so i will PM you soon ?

Hi,
I want to flash the I9500XXUAMDE_I9500OJKAMD9_ILO.zip Stock ROM (Full hebrew , designed for GT-i9500) on a factory unlocked AT&T SGH-i337 using ICS 4.2.2.
I tried flashing it using both Odin and TWRD recovery with no avail.
IMHO the problem is with the CSC , I cannot change my CSC to ILO.
I hope there is a walkthrough for this.
In the worst case I need ANY FULL HEBREW (with RTL menus) Stock ROM (with no AT&T apps) for SGH-i337. :fingers-crossed:
THNX ALOT
That would be very, very unwise.
I9500 has the exynos octacore system while the i337 (and i337M and i9505) have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 silicon.
If you manage to flash that i9500 rom into an i337, you would be pretty much guaranteed to hard-brick the phone.
There are very good reasons why the variants of these phones have their own sections of forums
NO!!! Dont do it! You'll hard brick your phone
yes its possible. but it will hard brick it for sure.
THnX AlOt GuyZZZ :good:
It seems I inadvertently bought the better phone it has the same specs as the GT-i9505 which leads me to the question will the SGH-i337 support GT-i9505 ROM ? :fingers-crossed:
BTW "Brick" status (unsuited firmware flashed on hardware) is unrecoverable (physically damages the hardware) ?
I won't be able to boot into recovery/DL mode and flash a working ROM ?
Had a friend flash a i9500 rom as soon as the att g4 was released. He visited the jtag box. HARD BRICK. No you can not run those roms. Besides, for every i9500 rom released they do a i9505 rom also..or very soon after. In my guide is the list of i9505 roms that will work for you.

yes they are; root, install recovery (one click three way is easiest, and who DOESNT like a good three way?), and make sure its an auto-loki ROM. There are touchwiz (keep samsung features) and AOSP (no samsung features; closer to stock android), and Cyanogen nightlies that have several issues.
I am running Goldeneye 1.3, Ktoonsez kernel, Xposed framework with multiwindow hack, etc. 100% stable, 100% smooth; all Samsung features work fine. Based on an international ROM, and screen smear is fixed, camera is quicker too.

Hi Axman,
In this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2295557 is there a ROM with Full RTL Hebrew menus ? that's is the prime attribute I'm looking in a ROM right now.
Let's be more specific unlike what you've said currently there is no "Hebrew" ROM for the GT-i9505 (official in sammobile.com or non-official) is there a way/is it possible to customize the current official GT-i9500 Stock (meaning no carrier apps, am I correct ?) again, the link you have here is for the i9500 stock right? And you are trying to flash on i337 att, it will brick, This is NOT good. maybe you can ask the dev of that rom, and see if he has any way you can do this.
I am not for sure about this, but I think Wanam and Omega roms have hebrew.
I could be wrong, but upon first boot, it has many language options.

Hey Ax , Sorry for the lag I was hell busy this weekend...
I don't need something fancy , just something that will let me check the ROM's initial boot and config.
I could give it a try what's the program's name ???
I wonder why there isn't an Android OS emulation option in Orcale VirtualBox
One Q is very important - does the factory unlocked (GSM free) feature is ROM dependent or it's built in (flashed in) the device (e.g my SGH-i337) ?

Hi all
I currently own a galaxy note N700 and am a flashaholic, keep switching between CM & Touchwizz roms.
I have the chance to upgrade to an S4 from O2 (uk), now i have read a lot on this forum but still not sure wether to go for it.
My biggest concern is about rooting, that is all i am after, just want to remove bloat and keep the rest stock, as i rather like
touchwizz. On the N700 rooting was easy with philz kernel/recovery, how easy is it on the S4?
I dont know what firmware it will come with (probably not the latest), keep reading about this Knox thing and am a bit confused.
can anyone en-lighten me as to the easiest way to root and is it safe. We had the EMMC drama on the note originally
is there any problems like that here?
cheers

It's my suggestion that, if you are a flashaholic who likes CM/AOSP, you get a Qualcomm based GT-I9505 since the 9500 is Exynos based and will cripple support for CM because Samsung doesn't provide proper userspace drivers. If you can flash the Samsug device you have, you'll be right at home going to the S4. The procedures are basically the same.
Just don't update when you first use it root straight away the efuse is triggered by the update. So you will be safe.

Hmmm! thats a bit worrying, cos i can only get the I9500, seems the I9505 is always out of stock on O2.
TBH i'm quite happy sticking with touchwizz, as long as i can root and debloat. I assume its just as easy to root as N7000,
flash CF Root then flash a custom recovery as long as i dont update before?
Can someone confirm before i jump in and buy one? Cos i'm also tempted by GN2 and S3.
cheers
I own a i9500, did a a cf-root and flashed wanam, now it's better battery life and much more smoth with the touchwiz.
Overall, i have a very good experience with my octa.

Hi guys, I'm wondering if anyone can shed some light on a few things for me.
I have an ATT SGH i-337 MK2 with SafeStrap 3.71
Today I tried to flash PAC ROM and Dirty Unicorn into ROM Slot-1, and upon reboot when the ROM's logo should appear the whole screen just looked like when a nintendo cartridge isn't working. It was just a few crazy colors with some blocks and lines here and there.
Then I tried AOKP with it's Loki'd Kernel being part of the ROM. The nintendo screen came back again, but then the AOKP logo popped up clear as day for a second. Then went back to the lines and colors.
So could this be a problem with Safestrap compatibility? If so, how can I uninstall it? (I did read the dev's thread, and it just says use .APK and IDK what that means)
Or could it be that I also need to use Loki Doki with the other two? (Didn't see anything about that in PAC or DU threads)
Thanks!
Same issues apon using The Samsung Galaxy S4 for Verizon (jfltevzw) Build MK2 rooted using vRoot (English) and using safestrap. if needed I can upload the safestrap apk or version. If I install any type of AOSP ROM the boot logo is either missng or baby blue with wierd static lines. AOKP is the only AOSP ROM that eventually boots (with static boot logo) but no wireless works, and this is the same wether MK2 and/or MJ7 modules are installed or not. the only rom I can successfuly install and use daily that has no bootloader based issues is Hyperdrive ROM For jfltevzw & jflteatt. Any info would be much apreciated!

^ Interesting. I didn't expect anyone else to have this issue. I never read about it before. I really feel like it has something to do with SafeStrap.

Or could it be that I also need to use Loki Doki with the other two? (Didn't see anything about that in PAC or DU threads)
Thanks!

If you would have read 1st, then you would know that you can NOT flash any non TW rom on MK2. This is stated over & over on XDA. Safestrap is NOT the problem it is a Godsend from Hashcode for us to be able to flash custom roms onto our locked boot loader devices. Please read before flashing, bricking & then bashing the developers. Follow the directions posted on how to restore your phone, or better yet make a trip to Best Buy & they'll do it for you. Good Luck.
REEEEEEAAAAADDDD!!!!
It's been very well documented that AOSP does not work with safestrap. Neither does loki. There currently is no way/fix to flash AOSP.
So
1. No AOSP or GPE
2. No loki
3. No flashing custom kernels

I did read first. I've been reading this forum for quite a while actually. But there is so much information it's hard to keep it all straight. This ATT stuff is a lot different then my VZW Razr was. That phone was just flash and forget. There are so many different ROM's for this phone now that are 4.3 or KitKat I guess I just didn't realize that, that Android version came with the ROM and was originally something more mod-able stock.
Any way I wasn't bashing SS or Hashcode. I clearly said "compatibility issue" i.e. some programs just don't play well together hence the existence of compatibility mode, virtual machines, and x86 processors. So maybe you should read before bashing novice community members and making yourself look like a big asshole.
And I don't need best buy to fix anything I have a NANDroid, backup on Kies3, and Google+. Besides, I did all of this flashing I on a separate partition so the stock ROM was never altered. Thanks for absolutely nothing at all.
For anyone else that feels like they can move on with me, I would really like to try to install TWRP in place of SS. I'd appreciate any help with how to go about doing that. TIA

Well stating Safestrap may have a compatibility issue is offensive to the developer, especially since you did not read the instructions or posts from other members who did as you. If you would follow the directions it's perfect. I have 4 different roms on my phone + stock to choose from! How cool is that? I understand the overwhelming urge to flash a rom, as I too have been flashing on my Skyrocket since the factory warranty expired last year, and flashing roms is a breeze on that device. However, this S4 is more complicated since the introduction of the KNOX & the LOCKED boot loader. These phones are expensive so unless you really want a $700.00 brick, read, read some more, then read it all again. Safestrap uses TWRP to flash the roms, but TWRP alone is not compatible with MK2 nor is CWM. If you want to flash roms on your ATT MK2 S4 Safestrap is the only way to do that at this writing.

Okay, well thank you for that. I just see so many ATT S4's in here with other ROMs and Recoverys I thought I could get something to happen. Anyway, sorry for the poor thread and response. I appreciate the plain blunt fact that SS and the ROMs that work with it are my choices for now. And don't worry about me. The worst that I'd probably get is a soft brick and I've recovered from that before Thanks again

Hey man I totally understand. It's hard to watch all these other roms pop up for the original S4 & we can't flash them. But we no longer have to suffer with only the stock rom option since Hashcode's brilliant Safestrap was released. Once you get use to it, the ability of being able to multi-boot roms really kind of makes up for the locked boot loader. Soon though, we will have 4.4 Kit Kat & then we can start this process of getting off the stock rom all over again. Right? It could be worse, we could have I-phones. We do have a ever growing number of great custom TW based roms available to us here for our device. So try them, you'll be surprised how much better your phone performs. Glad I made sense & forgive my bluntness that's just how us Rhinos roll.
Hi I just got a new sprint Galaxy s4. I had a Samsung infuse 4g that I rooted and unlocked (which btw was hard to do for a newb way back then) but I never flashed a rom. To be honest I was afraid that I would destroy the phone. They are not cheap. I still have the infuse, so I guess I could practice flashing roms on that one but is it basically the same process? I just really really do not want to destroy my beautiful phone. Is it risky to flash ROMS or put other stuff in the phone? Thanks for the advice. This is an awesome site.
*Anything* you flash to your phone carries a risk (however minute) that it'll brick the device. The root method may be different, but for the most part ROM flashing is the same across any Android device.
IMPORTANT: Check your device model, since there are two variants of the Sprint S4 out there (SPH-L720 and SPH-L720T). The 720T doesn't work with all ROMs, and (last I checked) you lose the Spark connectivity, but 1x/3G/LTE will still work. I have one of the old models before Sprint started rolling out Spark, so I haven't really been keeping up with that part of it.

thanks for replying. I posted a question on the rooting thread regarding the s4. I was wondering about rooting it with my
Android version. I believe it's the latest but was not sure. Do you know if it's relatively safe to try that or are there issues like boot loops? Maybe I should leave well enough alone because I doubt I could fix a brick. These are really nice phones...thanks for your help

i had no problems. that being said. make sure you also have a stock rom down loaded on the phone or on a pc to fall back on, that way if you do boot loop you can just flash that. also once rooted make a backup!
you can root without doing a new rom or even choose a rom thats mostly stock with minimal changes its up to you how deep you go.
first thing if first once you root if you have KNOX you WILL flag the knox warranty count by 1 and that is not reversible yet.
good luck
Hi,
myself, being one happy Note 4 user, felt betrayed when Samsung locked the bootloader since COJ5 for Exynos variants, dunno about Qualcomm but I presume it's the same. Past this point we can't go back to whichever official (or custom for that matter) ROM, rendering our choices nonexistant. As far as I am concerned, we possess the phone thus we can do whatever we want, heck, I've paid a great sum of € for it! But samsung now says no-no. What gives? It isn't against the EULA afaik, and we have a crippled device now
Thoughts?
is the COK1 bootloader also locked ?

How is it crippled besides the ability to go back ?
You can root, flash kernels, flash deodex stock ROMs. and custom ROMs ? What else is there? I don't understand.
I've tried both the COL2 and COL1 recent releases on Sammobile and while I can't revert back to an earlier firmware it has affected nothing in customizing my phone.
Yeah it sucks not being able to go back. It could suck a lot more.

Yeah, maybe I've got a little bit reactionary there, but

Well, for one I can't go back to Kit Kat, which was a completely different beast altogether...

I can't install viper4android (which I could with custom roms under the same bootloader but got into many other problems like cut-out audio for phone calls and 92% stuck battery when charging)

It does, and as I said maybe I was a bit over the top, but I'm expecting someone to crack this useless feature. What's the point anyways?

I found this is a good base here for the N910C
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/development/rom-note-4-mod-t3244665
Flash TWRP via ODIN. Root and custom kernel via TWRP, then make a backup.
I haven't messed with Viper in a while. Been trying the other audio mods.
I'll see what I can find. I've got a COL2 deodex ROM built. Messing with other tweaks.
I've messed with a v4a mod and finally got it working on stock COJ5 with root. Now everything's working fine and savvy. Thanks for the assistance though!
