Keyboard and mouse sharing with a Windows computer - Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 General

Well I've bought the Note 12.2 to boost my productivity and to do that I need to share my PC's mouse and keyboard with it,
I thought of side sync however it turned out the tablet only work as a host for a phone screen and doesn't connect to a host computer.
Then I tried share KM which as far as I can tell never works, tried it on SIII, NoteII, NoteIII, Note 10.1 2014 and never got it to work, still putting hope in it and reading all the great reviews I decided to install it on my 12.2 only to find a message saying that beta test have ended please update the application with no updated version available any where.
Is there any way I can achieve keyboard and mouse sharing between my PC and my 12.2?
Any way to actually achieve that seamless integration between windows and the android tablet just as if it was an extra screen?
UPDATE
Thanks for every one who replied, to make what I need clearer please watch the following video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVvczhM5KxI
1- Samsung SideSync works when using a phone with a PC or a phone with a tablet, but not using a tablet with a laptop, which I need
2- ShareKM is abandoned and doesn't work any more.
3- Synergy is extremely buggy and takes more time to get it working than it actually operating as intended.
4- after digging deeper i found an app called take control lite, however it requires root access.
Thankfully towel root works brilliantly and doesn't trip Knox so i will try this app and update with the results.
UPDATE 2
Take Control Lite doesn't work with Note Pro for some reason it crashes every time you try to establish a connection.

I'm confused, are you looking to remotely control your tablet or are you looking to use it as a second display. For the latter I have used Air Display with limited success. I say limited because the resolution of the tablet being high the resulting scale of elements on screen is ridiculously small.

what i want is something like Samsung Sidesync for my tablet, meaning using the PC's mouse and keyboard to control my 12.2
you can watch the following video to understand it better

Ah. I'm unaware of any working alternatives at this time. Synergy for Android doesn't work on this device as far as I can tell. It looks like ShareKM has been abandoned temporarily. Perhaps contact samsung to inquire about their intentions to support Side Sync on this tablet?

So if you want your Note to be like "extra monitor" I can't tell you any apps. Apps I linked earlied was to get tablet screen shown on PC and that way you can use mouse & keyboard on your device. To do kinda this.

I did, but I assumed by 'side sync' he meant the process of side syncing, not the app SideSync. (Note the difference in names..)
I haven't given it a try at all. (As pretty obvious from the first-time launch message in the screenshot ) It's not something that is of use to me.

SideSync works differently on phones and tablet. On phones when you connect to a PC it screen mirrors or lets you control the phone with your PC's keyboard and mouse. On tablets, it acts as if the tablet were a PC. Meaning, when you SideSync a phone to a tablet the phone screen mirrors on the tablet and you can control the phone with the tablet's keyboard; including external BT keyboard and mouse if you're using them. You can't screen mirror or control a tablet with a keyboard and mouse from a PC. You can't really do anything with SideSync between a tablet and a PC.
From Samsung Apps...

The only one I know of is Synergy. It works well indeed between PCs .Between Android and PC (what you want) I never tested , it's in alpha and the tablet needs to be rooted.

I'm not sure exactly what OP is trying to accomplish, but logitech makes keyboards (e.g., k810) and mice that can pair with multiple devices and easily switch between them.

I wasn't at first either until I saw the video linked in post 3 of this thread. Skip to 1:22 in that video.
Upon looking for other similar solutions I ran across Synergy which is something I'd love to get working on my tablet.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xObZ6zwE2pY
I'm able to get the tablet to connect to synergy on my macbook but the tablet doesnt respond to any inputs from keyboard or mouse when i mouse over to it.

You guys can try this. It's from Rsupport who makes SideSync. I haven't used it in over a year but I used to use it to screen mirror and control my N10.1-12. It used to be a PC app but now looks browser based. It mentions something about needing to install a Samsung plug in from what I briefly read.

Well my friend I am sorry but I also didn't have any luck getting it to work, with several types of totally random bugs, for now i could only advice you not to use it

Here's Mobizen spoon fed to you.
Install this on your Windows PC (Mac users, you're on your own)...
https://www.mobizen.com/?locale=en
Install these on your tablet...
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rsupport.mvagent
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rsupport.rsperm.aa.second
Mobizen works over Wi-Fi or USB. USB's faster and works with the Samsung driver installed by Kies.
Follow the password set-up instructions and you'll get this...

Thanks Barry. I tried this with my MacBook Pro using the chrome browser method and it works Ok in Wifi mode but disconnects repeatedly on the USB side. The windows standalone application is fantastic though and works well for me on my windows machine. Typing this right now using it.

Xoom to DSLR: Knowns and Unknowns

There seem to be sprinklings of discussion about the use of a DSLR with the Xoom so I thought it would be good to identify what is known and unknown at this point:
Known
With the proper cable, on 3.1, you can transfer images from your DSLR to your Xoom.
Xoom does not natively read .RAW images.
RawDroid is a proof of concept RAW viewer.
This app is a camera control app, but requires a PC. Developer is responsive and has a list of enhancements planned.
This app can be used with Eye-Fi cards.
This app reads Canon (.CR2) .RAW images on 2.2 and up. Works on the Xoom. Features: * Preview the embedded jpeg images in folderview
* Show fullscreen preview
* Show extracted EXIF data
* Save as jpeg
* Share the image, e.g. mail or bluetooth
* Delete images
Unknown
Camera Control/Tethering: It is unknown whether you will be able to control the DSLR via USB, given an app is developed
It is unknown whether you will be able to use the Xoom as live view via the usb cable, given an app is developed. Some say this is impossible, but I think it could be possible. I personally think a developer could make some money off of this type of an app. I think many photog ipad owners would flock to Xoom for this.
Please add and comment on the above list. It would be nice to share what we know/don't know.
Whether something is possible or probable are two very different things. Simply supporting host mode does not allow for Live View or Camera Control. These things require very specific drivers to be written which would need to come from the camera manufacturer. Maybe, at some point in the future, Canon might port their SDK to Android but right now it is not available, therefor it is not possible.
i would love to see more development in this field too. and certainly would pay for these type of apps.
raw is defiantly a biggie for me since i shoot mostly in raw. but it's not a big deal since canon can output images in RAW and JPEG at the same time. but if the tablet can read raw, then it'll save me space on my memory card.

I show almost entirely in .RAW (except for timelapses) so .RAW is big for me, too. the I just threw a couple of .CR2 images on my Xoom (from my PC) and it does preview and display the .Raw images quickly and nicely. It is designed only to work with Canon, however. It is an alpha release right now.
I do have the proper cable (typing this on a usb keyboard right now) but my problem is i dont know how to transfer files to/from my XTi! Nothing pops up or anything and the usbdisk folder is empty
CR2 App
Just tried his app out - it ROCKS!
I transferred CR2 files from my PC to the Xoom (camera connection cable arrives tomorrow.) You can view EXIF data and save to JPG. This is HUUUUUUUGE for a lot of us Canon DSLR users.
I don't have the Xoom rooted do I took a couple of shots:

After saving as a JPG, you can then use the photo editor of your choice. This makes the Xoom purchase worthwhile, almost, in and of itself.

The RawDroid demo is in the market now.

Agreed....I would be in heaven if someone got a live view app running. People always poo-poo it when I mention it and tell me Xoom does not handle video in, but I think they are assuming I mean over HDMI versus USB. I would think it is quite conceivable to create an app based off of the Canon EOS utility, I know there is a linux version of that. I don't know Nikons, but they must have a similar utility. You have to wonder at what point wifi or bluetooth becomes standard on higher end dslrs?
Canon cameras have been ported and sporting awesome ROMs for a long time now.

I can see it being a challenge with landscape photography unless you are willing to lug a laptop along with your setup. There are two application that need to be installed for this to work. One on the PC/Mac and another on the android device. The PC/Mac also needs a wired connection to the camera. Once everything is connected, you can control the camera from the android device over a wireless network.

Hi,
We are allready thinking about the direct connection possibilty, but we don´t know if and when we get this feature for our app.The bigger problem is the connectivity. Canon distributes developer with a excellent development kit - but only for the USB-> PC solution.
For a direct connection between the camera and an android device, we have to figure out each interaction by ourself - this is a very time consuming work and we are still a sparetime project, so the development is - first of all - a time question.

Thanks for that, I understand the time factor. Hopefully, Canon will consider releasing other SDK's in the future that have this capability. It's good for both Android and Canon.
It is certainly possible to remote control your Canon with Android USB host device... (without a PC)

Reverse USB Tethering on G3 - A solution ! (?)

It has been acknowledged by many that Reverse USB Tethering is an essential feature missing in the Android OS, atleast natively. Several processes have been attempted but none of them is sure-shot and certainly not noob friendly.
However, while browsing through random sites i came across
Code:
[URL="http://www.codeproject.com/kb/android/usbportforwarding.aspx?fid=1625023&df=90&mpp=10&sort=Position&tid=3900438"]THIS LINK[/URL]
which "seemed" to be an easy solution. I did attempt it but was unsuccessful. I expect the advanced users to have a bit more insight into this and they would like to post their views after attempting it
P.S. - Please remember that we are talking only about sharing a PC internet connection via USB to an Android mobile aka REVERSE USB TETHERING so please do not mix this with "Conventional" USB Tethering
Yeah it is pointless you can easily use wifi
Sent from my GT-I5800 using XDA App
..the point of this is to get your computer's internet connection to your mobile, It's very useful for people who haven't got wifi at home or a packet data plan..
Visualise this -
Someone has a old desktop PC at work or home which doesnt have a wi-fi card. What it does have is a hi-speed unlimited LAN connection. On the other hand he only has a G3 with no 3G or Wi-fi access. Only a barely sustainable 2G data connection.
Now u see the usefulness of this project ? Not everyone is lucky enough to have a wi-fi hotspot near them or create an ad-hoc wifi with the above configutation
Downloading applications for your phone can be pretty tricky without any internet connection, or it can be pretty expensive if you have to pay for the data you receive. Whilist you can find some apk's from the net, you need to have access to market to get the more 'unknown' apps that no-one has uploaded to the web.
I myself was looking for a solution like this for a long time, but then I bought myself a 256kb\s data plan which costs 5€\month
Yeah, like I said, some apps are in the web, but rarely those not-so-popular ones. That's why market is essential, and this reverse usb-tethering a perfect solution for some users..
To expand on Thom47's views suppose i have to update Google Maps, can you imagine the time it would take over a conventional 2G network where data connection keeps dropping often ? You could argue that updated Google Maps app can be downloaded and pushed to phone for replacing the outdated version. But in this case Google Maps was just an example.
And where i live, Wireless Routers cost atleast $20 or more (not sure about the exchange rate). Kinda pointless to install one if its needed only for a phone. Considering that i already have access to a decent LAN a USB cable seems to be the most viable option...

just get any cheap wifi router
netgears is cheap and works fine
u can always use ur PC even w/o te wifi card in it by a cable
wifi is much more better and freedom u will gain plenty of other options like SSH file sharing etc which u wont have in reverse tethering
u would be only saving 1200-1300 Rs (INR) by that which if u buy saving ur pocket money will pay u back sooner than later
i had similar problem earlier now i wonder why to turn on the PC
Hi,
If you can use linux, this can be done easily.
http://www.linuxreaders.com/2011/03/android-access-internet-from-computer-via-usb.html
As usual, u miss my point.....
AFAIK, its not decreed anywhere that u have to use your cell only when u r sitting next to a PC. I could update the files / programs and use it elsewhere too. Do you know the size of Swype beta full language file ? Have u ever tried to download it via 2G ? Regarding the consideration of buying a cheaper phone we can also tie a string to two empty match boxes for communication and that would be much cheaper. Unfortunately it wouldnt serve my purpose. I just wanted a way to update my apps / programs quickly once a day or week so that I could use them later. Its not like I wanna use my cell to download stock ROMs or even larger files. There are other numerous examples I could give but it isnt gonna change either of our viewpoints.
@dpthakar - thank you for your suggestion. Did know bout the linux solution but its supposed to run only on Win 7. I prefer my Win XP PC but I will probably have to run it in VM if all else fails.

Yes, i wanna know too !!! ………………therefore i opened a thread here 2 weeks ago and 2 days ago someone did the same. But I won’t moan about searching and tell all what I know about.
There are a plethora of DVB-t dongles and also a lot of linux-drivers for them. Actually, Archos 101 (Froyo) enthousiasts implemented it on their Tablet. They also made an APK, LiveTV, that scans the dongle for canals. So, it is very close, “just” find the way to port the drivers to our tablet. I did some coding in the past but Android is a bridge to far for me. So I hope someone will pick it up.

And please, no one start talking about those streaming TV apps that have 40 random channels that no one's ever heard of (SPB TV for example).

tried slingbox? i use it to stream from my directv dvr 2500 miles away.
still not a fan of the android interface, as the pc interface was much better, but it gets the job done.... except you need a slingbox ($100-$200) and the app ($30)

Yeah, I'm jealous that you have it and it works great, but I'm not paying for it. I don't have anything but regular cable because there are only a few channels I watch, but I'd like to be able to get them wherever there's a cell signal.
Watch live tv in the browser
Watch live tv in the browser just go to www.mobiletv.net. All you need is flash. And its completely free.
Been looking for something like this as well. Haven't had a chance to try it yet, but I might give it a shot when I have some time.
If streaming from your home PC is an option you'd consider, you might want to check out SplashTop. Currently $5 in the Market. Has fairly great Market reviews incl from A500 owners. I'm not affiliated of course, just doing my homework on it first before I try.
Full remote desktop app and from the looks of it, it looks like if you have cable connected to your PC, say via Windows Media Center you can remote into that and stream the output to your Tab. Am hearing fairly good things about the video quality. Or of course you could also do Hulu, Netflix, etc.
Found an article about live TV on it (though this is by iPad user)
thedigitallifestyle(DOT)com/w/index.php/2011/06/03/using-splashtop-to-watch-live-or-recorded-tv-on-the-ipad/
If you decide to give it a shot, let me know what you think! Good luck...
EDIT: Clarification. The version of the app recommended by the dev for Honeycomb tablets is SplashTop HD.

Hmm interesting suggestion. I have always thought Splashtop was another VNC program until now. I tried it out and it works great for what you mentioned. Unfortunately, something with my desktop video driver causes it to freeze up after a few minutes. Same thing happens with VNC programs lately.

I have done a channel scan with droidTV.apk. Found channels, but have a very high error rate, so don't see anything.
So the source of the errors is the droidTV app we think.
Is any one working on an app for DVB ? Maybe someone can tell how to crosscompile an binary? Or maybe can tell me how to configure toolchain paths for compiling successfull????
Not exactly what your after but with a combination of dvblink connect server http://www.dvblogic.com/netpack.php and xbmc dvblink addon script http://dvblogic.com/wiki/index.php/DVBLink_Connect!_Server_clients and xbmc android http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29737360 you can watch live tv. Hd channels still need hw decoding working to play smooth(not currently working) but sd channels play fine
i'm in the same point as schlex2010, i succed to compile Hauppauge WinTV mini stick modules for Kernel 2.6.39.4+

finally I did it.
All channels streaming on ICS 4.0.3 Kernel 2.6.39.4+ with 2 Hauppauge USB WinTV, MiniStick and NOVA-T-Stick.
It was done compiling modules which came with official ICS downloadable Kernel from Acer web page.
Loading modules and dvb adapter files with scripting and streaming locally with mumudvb for android.
Streaming is playable with players like MX or VPlayer.
yeeeah! I can see Live DVB-T every where.
Didn't see it mentioned, but USTV in android app store is pretty good too. Has the unheard of channels but also has a "hot" channel list that weeds them out and just shows HBO, SyFy, etc.
That said, between mobiletv.net and USTV, I'll never need cable! Mobile - which works really well on my slate PC (just tried it) has a ESPNU feed which will get me through volleyball season, as does Watch ESPN app. When one factors in all the other channels, movie channels and my netflix account, I'm set! WOO HOO!
One quick question...does anybody know what time zone mobiletv.net follows - so I'll know which movie schedule to follow (I am on EST in US)? Thanks!

Note 10.1 2014 as a laptop replacement? Surprisingly close.

Like many of you I’ve suffered through trying to get a 10.1” Android tablet to perform typical productivity functions with a keyboard and mouse. I had a G-Tab 10.1 with Samsung’s BT Keyboard Case, a Note 10.1 I used with various BT keyboards and now the new Note 10.1. It’s a miracle. I don’t know whether Samsung finally focused on integrating keyboard and mouse support or if it’s changes Google introduced in 4.3, but finally the keyboard/mouse performance is incredibly seamless.
Here’s part of the secret. There’s now a setting to disable the on-screen keyboard. When selected there’s no longer a fight between the internal and external keyboard as to which has control. And once activated, the new Note knows to disable the on-screen keyboard automatically when an external keyboard is connected. Nirvana.
There’s also zero lag when typing or using the mouse. The latter works as well in Android as you’d expect a mouse to in Windows. After typing for a while I’ll forget I’m using an Android device and start using Windows-only features (like shift-click to select).
The keyboard I’m using has shortcuts for the stock Mail client, stock Browser, settings menu, notification panel, apps, media control, and more so I don’t even need to touch the new Note when I'm head-down in productivity work. It’s incredibly impressive.
For "Word" solutions I use three products - Polaris, QuickOffice, and the Microsoft RDP client to use real Office on my home PC. I’ll usually use Polaris for quick documents I need formatting control over. QuickOffice for something short where I want spell checking. And for serious documents I’ll either start and finish via RDP Word or start something locally with Polaris or QuickOffice and paste it in to RDP Word or save it to DropBox and open it via RDP to complete it.
After suffering through the G-Tab and old Note I can’t describe how night and day the new Note experience is with a keyboard and mouse. I’ve always been sold on S Pen/S Note but now have no qualms traveling solo with the new Note comfortable in what I can accomplish with it compared to schlepping around a notebook/netbook and its assorted paraphernalia.
Here’s my setup.
And this is a must have. It’s an angled USB cable that can be used when the Note’s in a stand to keep it charged.
Cool! I'm probably going to be using it the same way. Do you know if I can use my military common access card ?

KNOX was created with/for the DOD. So I'm guessing the physical capability is there. Whether you can actually navigate the process to get your individual Note connected is between you and the layers of IT and security supporting whatever you're trying to connect to.

How did you deal with the keyboard disconnection issue? I'm still fighting with my keyboard disconnecting if I stop typing for more than a second, and not reconnecting without a couple keypresses, which are sometimes typed in and sometimes not.

I didn't know there was a keyboard disconnection issue. I'm using a SM-601 and the keyboard's made by Samsung if that makes a difference. Try disabling the on-screen keyboard as shown above. The conflict between the on-screen and physical keyboards in Android has historically been legend. If that doesn't help perhaps try a different brand of keyboard. BT connectivity is (sadly) far from perfect.

1. does the note stand come with the keyboard?
2. what is the keyboard model number?
Same here with the sm-p600.Samsung finaly found a solution to get rid of the on screen keyboard when using a bluetooth keyboard.Works perfect.I use the stand pouch from samsung as dock(if a need to charge it i just turn the note around) and the samsung bt keyboard in combination with a 7 euro mouse i found on ebay!!!

It's a cheap folding aluminum stand. I don't remember where I got it; might have been eBay.

I also have one of these.

I have the OEM Book Cover but the stands provide some height so I can connect the angled microUSB connector while the Note's sitting on its stand. That way it's fully charged if I'm typing for a couple of hours and doesn't look dorky with the Note turned upside down with a wire sticking out of its top.

It's my own creation from recycled Samsung accessories I couldn't use any more. It's the OG Tab 10.1 BT Keyboard Case that I used an Exacto knife to remove the flap and cover from. It's microUSB rechargeable and lasts a week easily on a charge and is incredibly thin.
I store it in this which is the old G-Tab leather slip cover.

Because of this thread I just started to test out an HP bt keyboard I have around... It's really nice, BUT, I use Swiftkey (on screen keyboard) instead of the Samsung default and every time I turn on the bt keyboard I get a pop up system message telling me that the tablet it's defaulting back to the stock Samsung keyboard... That's annoying because when I'm done using the bt keyboard, I have to go back to the settings and default back Swiftkey...
BTW, as a reference, that switch to enable/disable the on screen keyboard only shows up when the bt keyboard is detected. Once you turn off the bt keyboard, you'll get back the on screen keyboard without the need to do anything. (In the case the switch is off).

I'm using the Microsoft Mobile Wedge Keyboard and Mouse, via Bluetooth. The keyboard is fantastic, with the occasional bit of lag. If I connect the mouse however, everything falls apart unfortunately. Using the mouse disables the keyboard, until I start typing again, then that disables the mouse. Very annoying and I hope it just requires a software fix. Otherwise, I have a something between a Chromebook and Windows 8 laptop in terms of productivity.

[Q] Using Nexus 9 as keyboard/mouse

Hi,
I want to use my nexus 9 as a mouse / keyboard for my nexus player. The onscreen keyboard is very tedious to use and I can't browse through a page in Chrome without a mouse. It would also be very handy when setting up XBMC.
I don't want to get another bluetooth keyboard/mouse, I have too many remotes and controllers already!
Does anyone know how to do this?
Thanks,
Been looking myself..trying to find a server side apk for able remote for google TV just to try it.

I tried that but there is no mouse, so I can't use Chrome and the keyboard doesn't work on XBMC.
Look at DroidMote, might be useful. Is better to control with a phone but also a tablet can be good.
You can install it from web, i added the Leanback stuff.
You need root on your Nexus Player to start the server.
In the menu you have the option to start automatically the server when device boot.
With DroidMote you can control also multi touch apps and games on devices without touch screen like the Nexus Player. Or when you connect a normal Android device to the TV via hdmi cable or slim port adapter.
A small example with Chrome Browser:
https://plus.google.com/+VideomapIt/posts/XQQxXrfAD42
Update:
On ADT-1 you can use also old versions of the server
On Nexus Player you need the last version 3.5.6 or higher
I haven't tried it yet but anyone try to manually install these apps:

A little explanation to better understand the differences, I apologize if it may seem like a promotion, but the intention is just to give help:
If you want to use apps specific for AndroidTV, the directional arrows are sufficient, but a mouse and keyboard would help speed up the selection and the control in general.
If you want to use apps made for Tablet and Phone, in most cases, a mouse and a keyboard are not sufficient. This because, many apps and games not have the mouse support and because many others require multi touch gestures. (zoom in/out, rotate, swipe etc.) Also many games, not have the support for an hardware gamepad but accept only touch actions, while others support the gamepad but does not have support for the mouse, so you can't navigate the menu with a simple hardware mouse and therefore the game is unusable.
DroidMote was born 3 years ago, with the intent to make up for all these limitations with the least possible effort and to provide a viable alternative to a classic mouse and keyboard, without lag and with a very simple and accessible graphical interface.
You can read this guide and watch a few videos to better understand the potential of this application http://www.videomap.it/dmcguide.htm
You can use anything you want to control your Nexus Player, but remember that if you have some problem DroidMote can solve it.
but for miracles still i'm not equipped...
p.s.
Sorry if i require root permissions, but DroidMote emulate hardware devices at low level and this is possible only with root permissions. Construct it in another way, would make it less effective and many things would be impossible.
@zulu99,
I see. Actually, I did come across the hurdles, like the mouse not being registered as touches. So, yes, this would solve those problems. The root requirements are not a problem. I actually came across a game that would normally be mouse/d-pad usable, if you could get past a start screen that wasn't. Cool.

When the normal mouse not work you can use the TouchMouse of DroidMote for example, very useful in many Android games.
The TouchMouse need a touch profile for your server device, that you can simply download from this page http://www.videomap.it/download.htm For the Nexus Player you need the 1920x1080 orientation 0 i think, are at bottom of page. The TouchMouse is this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VT6bAMUUWg0 but many games and apps support also the standard default mouse mode and multi touch gestures with two fingers. The video is old, now DroidMote is more aesthetically pleasing and improved in every part. But remember that the interface must remain very simple and easy to use even when you are a lying in bed.
You can play also Windows games on your Nexus Player if you want, with DroidMote + Splashtop 2 ( Watch the latest video in the quick start guide ) if also Splashtop support x86 Android devices.
This is beyond frustrating
Droid mote doesnt even work.
From what I can tell, there is absolutely no way to get TOUCH input onto the nexus player. At least not on the latest update.
Droid mote connects and works fine, but a mouse click still wont click on anything in the lean back menu. Its the same as using a regular mouse... you can use it, but when you right click it WILL NOT register as a touch input.
There has got to be a way to enable the mouse to work as a touch input...... there just has to be.... its an option in some menus on android, but not the damn nexus player!
