If I got a GN3 new in the box today, can I root it?
Sorry if this is a stupid question but I've read conflicting things about this and was having trouble finding a straight answer. Some things I've read/been told is that the current version you'd get new out of the box there is no root for. My company is moving to Verizon and I want to make sure I get a phone I can root.
Thanks everyone! :good:
This depends entirely on the software on the phone. If the software on the phone is 4.3, then the answer is yes. If the software on the phone is 4.4.2 then the answer is not yet. Here is the way to root on 4.3 and get the new version of the software.

I am on 4.4.2 NC4...I know they say there is no way to root it currently but I'd really like to..I had it rooted before and attempting to update it from 4.3 and keep root didn't work and now I am stuck on 4.4.2 with no safestrap and unrooted. Is there anything I can do? Like is there an md5 tar file i can flash for a rooted 4.4.2? I realize downgrading isn't an option so this kind of sucks.
Nothing you can do on NC4 but wait
This thread would have been great if I found it 2 hours ago. /sigh

I just rooted with Motochopper method. I didn't do anything else because i don't want the custom ROM. I didn't install any of recovery or anything.
All i did was Motochopper root to get Superuser.
Did I install bootloader by doing motochopper root?
I just got noticed Software Update is available from ATT
If I update it, Would I brick the phone? or Do I have to to Motochopper root again?
Please help me out as I am sure there are others in same situation as I am.
Thanks
How bout go ask this type of thing in the motochopper root thread and you'll get your answer or just do a search

A new update from AT&T? Are you using a regular GS4 or do you have a GS4 Active? Also, if you have a regular GS4, what firmware are you currently running? MDB or MDL?

If you want to OTA and root, make sure system status is to official, you can find more info in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2296014
Then, once OTA is available, just use rootkeeper to temp unroot, OTA, then restore root! And VOILA!

This helped out so much. Perfect answer . Thank you for your help
i know how it feels when people answer you like thatsupnow did, useless and on the limit of being offensive especially to a new member that just arrived in one of the biggest forums on earth. I'm glad to have given you the answer you needed.
P.S. to finish answering you, there is no risk other than loosing root if you are rooted and apply the ota, you will not brick your device, you might just install an update that patches the motochopper exploit so you wont be able to root again. Also, rooting and bootloaders are 2 different things, but if you dont plan on installing any recovery/roms/kernels then you shouldn't worry about the bootloader.
OTA Software Update?
Yeah I just received the OTA software update. I found it very suspicious though. I was using my phone checking email and all of a sudden this message appears that states "AT&T software update has been downloaded and will restart phone"
That honestly scared me thinking it was some weird malware/virus on my phone. Mine is running stock non rooted 4.2.2. I also have AVG antivirus installed. So anyways, it installed the update and rebooted the phone. Everything seems to be working fine.
Does anyone know what this update fixed/added?
I honestly can't believe an OTA update could be so intrusive like that.
whats your firmware?

Ah, it looks like an OTA is rolling out for the GS4 Active. I537 is the Active, I337 is the original/proper GS4. I was excited for a minute! haha

Okay well this is good then. But the way AT&T pushed the update is ridiculous. It happened without warning or even a prompt if I wanted to DL it.
Imagine if someone was working on something important when this update occurred. It stated a OTA update was being downloaded and will restart. Very intrusive. I hope AT&T fixes that or changes their policies.
So I got my first smartphone, and being naive, I downloaded and installed the OTA update from AT&T because I wanted to be able to store my apps on my 64GB SD card instead of the limited 16gb already on my phone. A few days later, I looked into rooting, only to find out that update breaks it. (at least as far as I know).
So my question is, is there a way to root this update, or are the devs working on one? Or will they wait for 4.3 to be released? I'm not sure how this process goes, I have been jailbreaking iPods and iPads for the last 5 years, but I presume it is similar, seeing as they both gain root.
Also, is there a way to uninstall the OTA update so I can then root? I am new to all this, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Quick answer... You are stuck. No rollback or root for now. There are always people working on rooting and not waiting for.
4.3. Maybe someone will figure out how to restore old rom. Who knows.
All your questions have been answered in other threads.
Well a lot of people can't upgrade to MF3 so I say first thing first....what version are you on? MDL? or MF3? If you're MDL any of the rooting options should work. If you upgraded to MF3 like the previous person said you're stuck. Since you're used to iOS...think of it as upgrading to new firmware and CRAPPLE no longer signing the previous OS, and Android doesn't store your BLOBS and you can't use Tiny umbrella.

1) Confirm you are on MF3 and not MDL (settings/more/about device/last 3 letters in your build version). MDB is oldest, MDL is what you want to keep rooting, MF3 is the newest and unrootable for the time being.
2) You cannot root MF3. If you are on MDL and use Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper before updating to MF3, you might be able to preserve your root.
3) You can bet there are people trying to exploit this new build. Same as when a new version of ios comes out, you have to wait until someone jailbreaks it. We're waiting for someone to root MF3.
4) When 4.3 comes out they will try to root that one too...or hope that whatever root method we currently use, at that time, still works.
5) They used something called a QFUSE in the MF3 update that prevents us from downgrading once we're on MF3. Until (if) someone finds a way to exploit that, you're stuck on MF3.
Ok so having just come into the world of android i have done some digging on the site before i created a post because i honestly felt absolutely lost. I have a I337 MDL 4.2.2 galaxy S4 in my posession. I previously was not interested in any custom ROMs or rooting in particular, however i ended up rooting my phone using the motochopper tool a while back. since the release of jellybean 4.3 i have been desperately searching for a way to get the upgrade, however my OTA updates don't work because I'm always told to try again in 24 hours, even though i know full well the update is available. I am not sure if this is due to me using the phone in the caribbean where i live,or it being rooted. However, since the MDL baseband seems to be some sort of software gold,I would like to install a custom rom,and i really really need instructions so simple that an idiot would get it,cause I seem to not be getting this at all. Any redirections to other threads would be appreciated, such as GoldenEye which seems to be a decent ROM based on my internet travels lol. Also if there is a way to bypass all the drama and simply do the OTA update to 4.3,it would be greatly appreciated. I apologize for any rules broken or annoyances created and appreciate any help I can get.

As xBeerdroiDx said, do not take the update. The easiest thing to do is use the CASUAL root method, and then you can use the custom recovery it installs to flash StockUp MK2 if you want the 4.3 update as that way you can get it and still keep your custom recovery to change at any time. You may need the MK2 modem from the thread if your cell and data service stops working right but it should be good.
I've read a lot of posts, and there are multiple instructions and people having different issues concerning upgrading to OA8 and keeping root.
1) At this time, do we have a set of instructions all in one place that works for almost everyone?
2) Anyone experiencing issues with the upgrade that would keep people from waiting until a better system is made?
Currently running NK2
Android 4.4.4
Kernel 3.4.0
Model SM-G900V
I do not use SafeStrap or KeepRoot. I can't play around at this time, because I'm using my phone for work, and can't be out of commission for an afternoon if I run into any problems. Thanks everyone!
I hate to be the guy to say this but if you can't risk the device or have the ability to recover from a bad flash you should probably leave well enough alone.
Yeah, I get it, thanks. Anyway, has anyone had any luck with the upgrade to Lollipop? Namely, can we upgrade and keep root without setting up Safestrap?

The only way to flash roms or even restore a backup rom on 900V is with safestrap, because of the locked bootloader.

Agreed.
Hey guys,
I ran a search but I don't understand half the things people are writing. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could please explain to me my options. In layman's terms, as I do not understand half the abbreviations and jargons here.
I rooted my phone over a year ago and really don't remember much about the process. I can't download important apps from Google Play anymore as they require newer versions than 4.2.2... So I'm stuck on this old version and need to update ASAP.
I have ONLY rooted the phone. I haven't done any mods or installed any ROMS. It's on stock AT&T Rom. (sometimes I wonder why I even bothered in the first place).
Can someone please point me in the right direction, I want a regular STOCK AT&T newest version, whether it stays rooted or not that's fine, but a newer version, KitKat preferably. What are my options? The simplest method would help me the most.
Things I really need backed up: My Text Messages, Voicemail, Call Logs, Whatsapp Messages etc. What is the best way to back that up? If I use Titanium Backup, and I don't have root after I update, Titanium Backup would be obsolete. So what would my other option?
Please help.
Much appreciated,
Are you sure you want to update from 4.2.2. You probably have the option to flash custom roms on your phone. There are many custom roms that that'll put 4.4.4 on your phone. Since you're rooted get terminal emulator from the play store. In it type
getprop ro.bootloader
If the last three characters are mdb or mdl you have a lot of options. I can help walk you through on how to get a custom rom on your phone.
You can update your firmware and bootloader to 4.4.4 too but you'll lose the option to flash most custom roms.

I'll be honest, I haven't really messed with any custom ROMS before. I just use the stock AT&T one. But I would like to upgrade to KitKat so my phone is faster and can download / upgrade the latest Apps. Lollipop isn't out for the AT&T Samsung S4 right?

No. My phone is rooted... Is it supposed to download to 4.4? And also couldn't there be issues with that?
I found this post. So I know this is ONE option: But I'll lose my Root. Which is fine if that's my only option.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2728462
As the OP says, I will lose ROOT. So my question would be, If I back up using Titanium Backup, how can I restore my backup if Titanium Backup works only on ROOT? This is very important.
@ jd1639 - He had mentioned there were several other options, so I will wait to hear them, and I can make a decision from there. Otherwise, I may have to fork out another $150 - $200 Bucks on a Samsung Galaxy S5 or S6. depending which suits my needs.
Many thanks for the replies!

You're on mf3 bootloader which doesn't really allow you to flash any roms anyway. You'd have to use safestrap.
What I'd do is flash the nb1 tar file in Odin. That'll update you to 4.4 and the device should then ota update itself from there. You will lose root, you can root it again if you want. See this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=50912149

Thanks JD, do you know if this wipes my phone? In other words, does it factory reset my phone?
Yes Flash the NB1 Stock file as he said. But you are going to loose Root and any pictures etc. stored on phone memory, so copy them to your PC or SD card. I always like to take SD card out just in case when I flash just in case it may erase it. But after you flash NB1 Stock or the Stock Root it is like a phone and have to set it up. Then it should Update to 4.4.4 itself from the settings/ Software update. Good luck. Any problem let us now.
Ah cheers,
Last question: Do you recommend the First or second option?
I337UCUFNB1_4.4_Stock_Odin_tar
I337UCUFNB1_4.4_Rootable_Stock_Odin_tar
Just a bit confusing as why he would post two separate links? I'm interpreting the first cannot be rooted ever.

It's possible to root even the 4.4.4. It just gets a little trickier to do it and you have to flash modules in Odin. In the general forum see "all things at&t....." by guut13

Yep I think you are correct. So if you want to root again use the Rootable to flash in Odin. Once you go from Jelly Bean to Kit Kat bootloaders are Locked for some .tar Same for Lollipop, they have not been able to root and unlock bootloader as yet. Just follow the steps and take your time and all will be good. Have done it several times on mine with Odin.
Hey guys, I just wanted to take the time and thank you both for the help. I finally updated today. After backing up all my data and making sure everything was safe to go. Bam! I did exactly as you suggested and had zero issues... I am now on 4.4.2
There were a couple hiccups along the way, but I figured them out without too much of a hassle.
Cheers again and best of luck to the both of you!
