[Q] HELP phone soft bricked - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Hello Everyone,
This is my situation.... I want Unrooting my Sprint S4 using Mobile Odin .... and now my phone only boots up to the Samsung Logo. On that screen it also says Recovery Booting however it turns off after 10 Secs. I can get my phone into download/odin mode but that is about it. I can not boot into recovery.
I would imagine someone either has experience or expertise on this matter.
PLEASE HELP
Thank you in advance,
V.E.

If possible what bootloader, modem and ROM were/are you on, also do you care about tripping knox (or is it already).

You have to wipe data to get it to boot. This will wipe EVERYTHING on internal memory. Or you could reroot and install install recovery over Odin and boot into recovery and wipe data which will be like wiping to do a clean Install for custom ROM install. Which wknr wipe everything. Once it boots up apply the stock unrooted tar via Odin with a COMPUTER.

I HAD Twrp recover... Had CWM recovery... phones acting like it doesn't have custom recovery (pain in my ass.)..... thought i used rom manger to put cwm back on it.
IDK the modem
I was on a Slim ROM (which was giving me problem as well; Great Rom but it just recently kept crashing.)
I already tripped knox forsure ..... and dont care..... i wanted to get it on a stock kernel by unrooting (Wasnt as brillant as I thought)
Don't even know if thats it possible (If it is show me the promise land! I wanted root again so I could get triangle away working on root.
However that is how I got here. So getting my phone operational would be a win, start; challenge accepted! :good:

Then if your phone is still stuck right now, boot into stock recovery and perform a factory reset and it should boot up. drink up!

Word of Caution ! Do Not Do a Full Wipe In CWM On NEW GERMANY ICS

Ok so i flashed ICS onto my galaxy note with CMW. I then boot into CMW recovery and i pressed wipe data to factory reset. The phone got stuck on wiping data and i pressed the power button. This caused it to restart but it got stuck on samsung logo. I thought ok i will just flash GB rom using PC odin but this did not work. I will send it back to samsung tomorrow for repair, hopefully they repair it. My binary count is 'no', can they tell if i have CMW on it?
ANYWAY YOU ARE WARNED!!! DO NOT WIPE ON THE OFFICIAL ICS ROM.
If you are getting to the samsung logo, have you tried starting in download mode or recovery mode and then re-flashing the rom?

What is your phone's history? Stock gb or yours one used to be flashed with any leaked ics kernel or rom? This is giving people getting more details what they should or should not do.

Yes i can go into download mode.
search the thread on this forum and look for flashing prerooted gb lc1 rom with pit file via PC odin and make sure you are on the right pit file version bf flash.
Just read more and maybe this could help you at least back to gb when your phone still be able to boot into download mode.
Pls note that your phone on a risk now and do this at your own risk.

I believe the problem is a little more complex than just wiping with CWM. And I believe OP should describe a little bit more of history before I got to that point.
I have personally just wiped data/factory reset with CF-CWM with NO problem at all.
I went from stock GB KK2 to stock ICS LPY using CF-CWM . Did not wipe anything before the update. Everything went smooth. Today I decided to wipe in order : Dalvik - Cache - and finally data/factory reset , all from the CWM recovery screen, that I started from the CWM Manager. Rebooted my SGN and everything was fine.

As quoted many times, some people can wipe 1000 times until brick or even forever and it may never happen, even on leaked kernel, if you wiped 500 times still dont mean it is safe for everyone.
I can only speak from my experience, but I also have had no problems with LPY ICS.
I came from CM9, but I decided to flash stock GB with PC odin before flashing LPY.
Rooted GB with the zergrush exploit, then flashed LPY with CF_root kernel using mobile odin pro.
Made a backup of LPY and a factory reset wipe in CWM. No problems at all.
No idea if I just got lucky or not. Bit nervous about using it, thinking to go back to CM9, to be safe.

Stock recovery does not work fine - we have at least one incident of someone experiencing eMMC damage after a wipe with stock recovery
As stated EVERYWHERE - Just because some people are able to wipe successfully doesn't mean everyone is safe. The chance of bricking is maybe 5-10%, but:
On safe kernels it's 0%
Those who have wiped before are not guaranteed to continue being OK - over in the Epic 4G Touch forums, some users experienced problems after safely wiping 10-20 times or more. Some people's devices died on the first wipe, other's continue to be fine

Interesting... actually in the 1st place y did u press the power button during wipe? This mayb the reason rather than Germany ICS for ur case...
If the phone got stuck, the phone wont respond even if u press the power button.. i suspect its doing wiping in the background... need to b a little patient.
I once had wipe data for abt 15 - 20 mins but i juz let it do the job till it said its completed...

I absolutely do not understand this at all. But, I guess no one does.
There's GOT to be some variables that are similar with everyone that has the bricks happening. I have not bricked and I have been on about 4 or 5 leaked ROMs (and kernels). But, I decided not to take any more chances and I am on official ICS rom now, however, I did not flash CF Root kernel with the Open Germany ICS Rom. I got root by flashing CWM.zip and Busybox (per Dr.Ketan's post).

Not stupid.
Same thing has happened to lot of people including me.
I didnt ever touch CM9. Went from GB safe kernel straight to LPY. And did data/factory reset from CWM and bam... Phone is bricked.
DId not touch Nandroid, Did not restore, did nothing other than wipe.
I can get into download mode and CWM recovery. Even managed to flash the redpill recovery and GB rom via CWM but phone wont boot. ODIN cannot flash and gets stuck at NAND flashing step.
Its not stupid warning. Its a valid warning.

I didn't even do that. I got root using Mobile Odin Pro and injecting SuperSU from the CheckRom/Abyss 6.2 GB ROM. I cannot imagine anywhere else I may have got root. I did not use CF Root during or after the flash of LPY. I have stock recovery with fully rooted Stock LPY.
Now My question is how to flash a ZIP file of a Custom ROM without using CWR... Unless they release them in Tars as well as Zips. In which case the ROM is likely to have the CWR in the kernel anyway.

Stay stock and rooted. Study what these custom roms have modified and do it yourself. Most of the time, it's eye-candy flavor that they add for those who want it the easy way. They should be aptly called "customizer" instead of "devs".
Then again, that's just me

[Q] I've bricked my S4 I9505 I think

I tried to format the system folder while installing cyanogenmod nightlie and it froze. took battery out and rebooted and got back into download mode and cwm - resintalled it - all ok, but just stuck of the cyanogenmod boot screen.
Tried ot flash a stock rom, all goes through ok, but is stuck of the samsung boot screen
Help?
I can get into the cwm and download and odin connects ok
That isn't even a soft brick, just a bad flash. Go into recovery and try to flash CM again. If it doesn't work restore your stock backup (I assume you made a backup).

Sorted - thanks for both replies - wiping the data has done it - I thought i had already tried that and was still stuck.
It will never be bricked until you cannot access to recovery
Never worry about bricking. It's not a rare occasion. You'll be able to go through the recovery & reboot in your sleep lol.

[Q] Internal memory volatile?

I can't seem to get a stable rom on my phone anymore. I noticed when I upgraded to triforce rom 3.0 some of my apps were disappearing randomly on reboot (all installed on internal mind you). After doing a full complete wipe and reinstall I cannot reboot my device anymore. I install the rom go into it once and that's it. If I reboot my phone for any reason it wont go past the samsung galaxy s4 logo. I even restored a nandroid of my forcerom 2.0 that I had backed up. It's showing the same issue of not being able to restart. Does anyone have any ideas? or is my hardware screwed.
To make clear of what is happening
wipe
install rom
boot into rom (everything is cool/works)
restart phone
stuck at black screen with galaxy s4 logo
can still boot into TWRP, but not the rom

To update right now, in TWRP Internal Storage (0MB)
When I format in TWRP the internal storage went back to (9673 MB)
Once I format the storage and restart the phone I'm able to get past the Black galaxy s4 screen and get to the boot screen, but since there obviously isnt a rom installed it wont go past that.
It looks like after the reboot (where I can't boot into the rom anymore) the internal storage is labeled as "(0MB)"
Something must have gotten corrupted and your best bet is to star new, I would download the stock mf9 tar. Do a factory reset and then install the tar through Odin. That way you are starting from scratch with everything working , hopefully. Then use cf-autoroot to root the phone and install whatever recovery you prefer. At that point, I would make a nandroid of your stock rooted rom so its easier to restore if you run into problems again.

didn't have that issue of "device does not appear to be rooted"
I was able to fix my issue. I downloaded the rooted stock rom listed below along with stock kernal and recovery.
Download Odexed With Data Wipe Zip
MD5: 6700c52d8a9f7d6c0ff8d6cb453b74a1
Download Stock MF9 Kernel
MD5: ae6e8712be9492d4de374ade043851b5
Download Stock MF9 Recovery
MD5: f843028f419e68aedda2742ce65405a9
from thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2357471
I formatted everything in TWRP, I then installed the odexed with data wipe zip, followed by the kernal, followed by the mf9 recovery. I then booted into the new recovery after flashing (stock recovery) and did a factory reset. I booted into the stock rom and did a reboot. It worked. Once I verified I was back by restarting a few more times, I installed goo manager and installed twrp from there. After that, I went into TWRP and continued along my merry way of flashing back to my custom rom.
Throwing out all details I can for anyone else that experiences this problem. Thanks!

[Q] SGH-I337m soft bricked with faulty usb

A few days ago my USB port on my Telus SGH-I337m gave out, leaving me with no data connectivity and extremely limited charging capabilities.
I rooted the phone using ODIN and TWRP when I originally got it last summer, but i forgot all about that and brought it over to best buy for an exchange. We did a factory reset before the guy noticed it was rooted and told me to un root and come back. However, after the factory reset, I'm now stuck on the samsung galaxy s4 splash logo, but I do still have access to recovery booting. I've tried downloading stock and custom roms and flashing those to no avail. I switched my recovery manager from TWRP 2.5.0.0 to CWM 6.0.4.4, but still nothing. ODIN flashing is impossible because the USB port isn't working. Any suggestions?
Are you using super SU? There's an unroot option in it

You said you flashed cwm over twrp, if you did so you must be able to flash a rom too.
The bright side, if it's not booting you could take it to a best buy and they couldn't tell it's rooted
Edit, when you boot into recovery is it the stock recovery now, or cwm?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
Any custom roms I've tried to flash have still left me stuck at the splash logo. Any chance you could point me to a stock ROM download? None of the stock roms i've found will install. And since it does still boot into recovery mode the guys at bestbuy will still know i have it rooted though right? worst case i might just drain the battery and bring it in since it takes about 20 mins to charge 1%.
edit: it recovery boots into CWM 6.0.4.4 only, hangs on normal startup with any rom

If it boots into a custom recovery, twrp or cwm, yes they're going to know you modified the device. But you're not going to be able to get rid of that without Odin.

If I'm able to fix the boot error, would I be able to use mobile odin or super SU to unroot it?
Either way any other suggestions for getting past the splash screen?
What I've tried exactly is:
-boot into CWM recovery
-wipe data/factory reset
-wipe cache partition
-wipe dalvik cache
-install ROM from zip
-reboot
custom ROMS install ok but give me the boot error
stock roms don't install at all

I'm not sure what to tell you. First, you're flashing the custom roms correctly and I'm not sure why they're not booting. I don't know what stock rom you're trying to flash.
Having the custom recovery is going to kill you at best buy. They'll try to boot into recovery to do a factory reset and they'll see you modified the device.
I don't know if mobile Odin works on the s4, I don't think so, but you'd have to boot into something first. And that's a problem right now.

I managed to get past the splash logo. Turn out i needed to format all the partitions as well as clear them before installing a rom.
The stock roms i was (mistakenly) trying were the odin tar.md5 files. But now I've got mobile odin running and I found a couple videos with mobile odin and the gs4 so im going to give it a shot. The procedure recommends >50% battery though so I'm going to have to let it charge overnight.
We'll see if it works in the morning
Reflash lastest 4.4.2 (Colombia) Firmware from Sammobile, Tick "NAND Erase All", "Re-partition" & "Phone EFS Clear", also put the unziped attached file on the PIT section.
This will completely wipe your NAND, this means a complete Full wipe of the whole phone, I also have a i337M from Telus & deleted all the remains of previus modifications that normal recoveries can't wipe. thus reformatting Boot, Cache, System, EFS & all other partitions to their correct state.
Make sure your Odin window looks as the attached image.
It will stuck at samsung logo after flashing, boot to recovery & perform a factory reset, and you are good to go.
King regards.

Same happened to me, but flashing stock firmware using odin kept everything intact. Didn't have to start over again. But I did have to flash root again.
Yeah I just downloaded the new Firmware to Odin and tried to boot into recovery using the button method to wipe data before Odining - didn't work. Booted back did a factory reset via the menu options and the phone tried to reboot into recovery, the phone restarted and just flashed the android icon but wouldn't boot into recovery to wipe data.
Just now I flashed the new Firmware via Odin and it of course dirty flashed. Once the phone was completely booted up. I shut it down properly. Then booted into recovery using the button method and that worked. Wiped all and starting fresh.
What were you all doing when this happen? all rooted i presume? so are you saying if you are rooted you can't go into recovery without going through bootloops? someone please clarify

I don't know what to say, my phone was rooted so I had to I odin flash cf-autoroot
again to regain root after odin flashing the new firmware from Sammobile.com
but I had no issues or problems going into recovery, bootlooping or getting stuck
when trying to reboot or boot into recovery.
For me it was the same old same old, odin flash new firmware, odin flash cf-autoroot
to gain root access, check everything out including reboot to recovery & reboot into
download mode... No different than what I always did using the Note 3 phone.
Good luck!
This is what happens after I rooted (mind you I forgot to check prior to root if booting to recovery works. and tried to boot into stock recovery - watch video:
Pulled batter, reinstalled and phone starts up just fine though, no bootloop

What's all this about not going into recovery because of bootloops?
I never seen any such thing, the original firmware with or without
root the phone never bootlooped when I went into recovery.
The same holds true for the new updated firmware, it never goes
into bootloops either when I go into recovery rooted or not.
In fact I never yet seen my note 4 going into any bootloops for any reason.
Hmmm.. I must be doing something wrong! LOL

In my case, I was just being experimental and wanted to see what happens if I delete every file that had to do with Knox. It ended up boot looping. I guess cause it couldn't find Knox when booting
Are you guys that are getting bootloops when going into recovery using the 4 way mod in wanam. If so, then i recommend not trying to access it thru 4 way reboot. Do it the old fashion way till wanam fixes the files need to do that. I know that if you try thru 4 way you get bootloop so you will have to odin back and start over. This time dont use 4 way reboot. Iam sure someone will come out with a fix.

Must be cause I wanted to go to stock recovery and hit recovery on quick boot I didnt shut it down to press buttons guess trying to go to recovery that way messed it up
Power down phone. Volume up + Home + Power will get you into stock recovery on a rooted Note 4. Just did it no problem.
