Stopping the update on vzw note 3 - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there an app I can freeze or remove that will stop the device from trying to automatically doing the update?
Sent from my SM-N900V using xda app-developers app

Unless you're rooted, no. If you are, then use Titanium backup to freeze the SDM app. That'll stop the update and get rid of the notification at the top.

Thanks for the tip, app frozen.

Too late to root?
I've got the OTA update and have not applied it. I keep dismissing the notice to apply the update.
I'm not rooted. I haven't rebooted since the OTA downloaded. I'm not sure it it will apply once I reboot.
Is it too late to root?

I went through the same thing on the Verizon Note 3. I wasn't planning on rooting this phone for awhile. When I first got the
update notice I hit cancel and it told me that I wouldn't be asked again and I would have to go to About Phone and hit
Check For Software Update. Figured I was ok with that until the next morning when it seemed to have already downloaded
and was asking to install. I would hit cancel and a clock which I could set a time to install showed up.
I just hit the back button and it would go back to my home screen. Only problem was the install notice kept popping up every
45 secs or so. Knew then it was time to root. I was sure I would hit that software install button by mistake because it's
right over the back button.
Tried rooting with Kingo but couldn't get it to work so went with Vroot and it rooted in a couple of minutes. Got rid of the Superuser
app Vroot installed and installed SuperSU then installed Safestrap. TB was the next app and I froze SDM 1.0 Haven't seen that damn update notification since. Hope this all helps. I was feeling pretty lost for awhile and almost gave up and hit update. SURE GLAD I DIDN'T
Looking to update to KK firmware and rock the KK Hyperdrive Rom pretty soon. No hurry though. I'm rooted and no update
trying to shove itself down my throat. Good Luck!

Fascinate OTA update underway

I just did a check for updates on my Fascinate, and it pulled down a 697KB update, SCH-I500_DH12_to_DI01. Not sure what it changes, etc.
I was able to download it, but I can't get it to install. It keeps failing. Do I have to unroot to install?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Not sure. Some guys in #samsung-fascinate on irc.freenode.net are going to mess around with it.
I got it. I think it installed correctly. Baseband ends in DI01 now.

did you lose root?
got mine really don't notice a difference..anyone else?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App & yes I'm a chick.
Just tried to trigger the update - got a Server Unavailable message. Guess they took it down??
Mine failed. Says IP previous update failed now.
the is a list of changes in one of the threads in dev section.
you have to have a stock /system to be able to apply so if you removed any bloat must put back or flash with odin
Ota will cause root lose but we have a flashable zip with root if you got clockwork running

Same issue here
Mine failed as well with the following error code: "UPDATE FAILED or INCOMPLETE. reason: IP_PREVIOUS_UPDATE_FAILED."
I wasn't rooted, but I do have third party software installed. Any ideas why I can't get the update to stick?
I tried the update on my non rooted phone. I mean i've never even done anything extra to it, and i still got the update failed reason: IP_PREVIOUS_UPDATE_FAILED
I'm thinking there must be something wrong with the update.
I'm having the same issue with "IP_PREVIOUS_UPDATE_FAILED".
I was rooted+lagfixed but went back to stock using the ODin restores, still getting the above. I've tried it with and w/o CWM enabled as well.
*EDIT*: I just want to note that the phone attempts to reboot and install the update, and I can see (VERY briefly) the recovery manager attempting to apply the update. In this, I was able to see 'signature verification failed' amongst the normal messages.
Hmm, if you're running the stock recovery, and stock everything else, and you see a "signature verification failed" error, then the downloaded patch must be corrupt. I'm guessing you might need to delete the downloaded files and force it to redownload the patch, but I have no idea how to do that.
On a side note, I just applied the official patch to my rooted and lag-fixed Fascinate yesterday, by temporarily reverting to stock, and re-rooting afterward. I posted the steps I took to do this over in the development forum, for those that are interested: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=792652
I called verizon and talked to tech support about the IP_PREVIOUS_UPDATE_FAILED problem, he didn't have a fix. So he said i can take my phone back to the store and have it replaced with a new one.
Anyone know where I can find the bloatware apk files? I got a little trigger happy and deleted them instead of renaming. I can't install the update until I replace them.
Any help with this...
I was rooted with lag fix and OTA installed unannounced. So I lost root as expected. Meanwhile, seems I have the update but each reboot brings the update screen back, over and over again. Baseband and build number are updated. I have rerooted, un-lag fixed. Trying to get this update to stop showing up because its KILLING my battery. Thanks for any help.

If your Fascinate (unrooted, cannot speak to rooted phones) will not take the update, AFAIK your only option seems to be the 30 day return policy at Verizon. Last week after over two hours in the store they finally swapped, but even that phone would not take the update. I went in today, got a new phone, and it took the DI01 update. Third times the charm.
Its updated for sure and currently rooted. When the phone reboots it says installation starts in "x" and counts down. I have to defer for 24 hrs to keep from irritating me. I may try the store for an exchange.

Avoiding OTA ATT updates.

I've searched to no avail on my phone for this. I am running GreyBlur. Everytime the phone downloads an OTA update and attempts to install it, it reboots and errs out. I hate this because it does it without my permission. Is there something to stop this without the bootloader unlock that we are all waiting for?

Yes. Use TiBU to freeze updater.
All I see in TiBU is that I can freeze updates for certain apps. I am running 4.1.57. I just want it to stop trying to send any ATT updates like the HSPA update. (I already had it, wink wink, nod nod) How do I go about doing that in TiBU?
Tibu< backup/restore< "click to edit filters"< filter by name: "updater"< apply< updater2.2.2< freeze!
or you can jsut deactivate motoblur if you dont need it for fb and other syncing.

Did it work?
I also got the notification. I then discovered this app had checked auto update in the market. To add insult to injury, the update FC'd AND get this: BROKE ROOT. All root apps stopped working. I was able to recover by uninstalling updates.
I then go looking for a fix only to discover that the dev removed the zip that is supposed to fix it from his website. I tried the zip that was there last night but was unsuccessful. I see another update that came out yesterday in the market. It is supposed to suppress outdated binary notification. I am a little gun shy with this app/dev. Lone update in my apps now.

Try the newest 3.0.5, it fixes that fc stuff. You can dl through rom manager (only flashing recovery and possibly reboot to recovery need root).
Also, it wasn't the binary, it was the app that had those issues.

I had gotten it 4 times over the last 5 days...just followed it, let it run, and all is well.
3e Recovery
Thanks for the tip. I tried as you suggested and ran into signature issues while in recovery. I guess I have to mod recovery so that it doesn't check sigs or wipe. This is getting more convoluted than I wanted just to get su updated. I think I read somewhere that an updated busybox might help too. Anyway, I will dive into fixing my "E:failed to verify whole-file signature" issues later and put this su thing to rest. I am on 3.05 and have disabled binary notification for now.
SU and BB are updated through the "binary update". It is version 3.0.5--had me run it a couple of times. I also use "fix permissions" after serious updates, and nightly flashes to keep things in order.

WiFi Not working after MDL update

Hi. It may just be coincidence. I rooted yesterday everything was fine afterwards. I started looking into updating to MDL since I didn't take the OTA update before root.
I updated via Odin on pc but hadn't noticed that my wifi had turned off until about a hour after.
Its thru the bar and the settings. It will NOT let me switch it to the ON position.
Thinking maybe I am going to need to unroot. Take update ota . Then root again...
I screwed up somewhere since I've seen no body else seeming to have this problem. Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks
J
Note: I was getting the SEANDROID notification after mdl update to which I went and froze in TiB

Just factory reset in stock recovery then go straight to download mode and odin back to mdl, it happened to me before something stays behind and causes issues mine was bc of kernel didnt fully overwrite in odin.

Flash the updated kernel that's IN Crawrj's thread. You don't need to freeze the Seadroid app anymore. Newest update to SU fixed that issue, so open up SU and you'll get the popup to update the binaries. Good to go

Just flash a new kernel, be it stock or custom, you'll be alright afterwards

I did open SU but it didn't prompt me to update binaries though but I have my WiFi back.
I'll be sleeping better tonight.

[Q] We see lots of OTA related problems, how do you disable OTA?

Today I had to restart my phone because it dropped data connection, the moment I restarted it said my phone was being updated and I should wait, it wasted my time and it shoved 10o update down my throat.
If I had recovery installed, this could have been disastrous, no?
Not only for recovery related problems, but this may also prevent people from being able to install certain things, or even one day in the future with a different update just block root?
How do we uninstall then disable OTA updates on an unrooted phone? When I disabled and cancelled notifications for Software Update app, I thought it was fixed, but it probably made it worse, it just installed without any notification or prompt.
I was planning to root and install twrp this weekend, now with all the horror stories I've been reading, I don't want to do it. :crying:
How is AT&T even allowed to push it without explicit permit to install on device.

I did that when I first got the notification. Notification disappeared. 2 days later I restarted my phone for the first time in over a week, and bam, it installed without any notification at all. So disabling notification won't stop it from installing, it seems..
I know this doesn't directly help your situation since you're not rooted but this should help someone who is.
I had to freeze "Software Update 2.3.0.5" using titanium backup for it to stop. Not sure of a way to do it without root or without the pro version of titanium.

What version of the G2 do you have? I'm on Sprint and I don't have "Software Update", I have "Update Device 4.5.1.10" which I just froze.
Does anyone know if I install the update can I still flash TWRP to my device? I'm not sure if I should install TWRP now and use the flashable ota zip or install it after I update it.

I'm asking the same question OP is asking, is there a way to disable the update on non-rooted phones? And from experience with several other Android phones... I know it's pretty much impossible to downgrade unless you start flashing, but I'm gonna ask anyways. Is there a way to downgrade the upgrade that was forced down OP's throat and my own throat? For me it actually updated in my sleep, I woke up and it said my phone was updated. OP and I are on AT&T's D800 variant.

On Verizon it is called MobileUpdateClient.apk. I changed the file extension to .old and then moved it to a new folder called old so I would know what I had changed.

Well, it would still help to avoid further OTA's from being applied if we are rooted and do not use custom rom, there is always a risk of getting OTA and messing everything up, therefore if freezing above app worked for you, it should be all we need. Is Software Update the actual app which checks for version and receives pushes from AT&T when a new OTA is available, or if there are other apps/modules that does this. The problem is, if it is incorporated into android system like some of the other stuff AT&T incorporated, it would be impossible to completely eliminate it without running a custom rom.

disable ota on at&t
Did you totally remove the apk, or rename it? Also, if removed, will it cause other problems?
I only ask cause i had a g2 that was pushed an ota and bricked my g2. Had to get a new one, now trying ti disable the ota's from doing that again..

you have to flash the old version by using LG Flash Tool, like I did.
So, I have a question for you guys. I got my phone yesterday and I'm on 10o. I installed the CWM recovery for 10o via Flashify, and now I'm concerned about OTAs - I disabled it via the Hidden Menu, but if there's an OTA to update the phone to 4.3 or 4.4, I'd like to receive it and not worry about bricking my phone.
I don't plan on doing a lot of custom ROM flashing, I really just wanted to root and install Xposed. Do I need to flash a stock ROM and go back to stock recovery, so I don't have to worry about OTAs? Or should I be good with CWM and the stock ROM that I rooted?
