[Q] Safestrap and Restoring Stock ROM - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a rooted Galaxy Note 3 (Verizon). I'm running Safestrap and made a backup of the stock ROM about two weeks ago.
...I had not tried any other ROMs, now I wish I had. Something went wrong with my stock ROM, long story short - it's just not workin' right and I want to restore it from the backup I've made.
I want to restore it to the stock ROM slot (not a new ROM slot).
The backup is on a Micro SD card, Safestrap sees the backup file. The 'Restore' button is not red (while I've got the stock ROM activated).
I haven't done anything yet. I'm hoping I can just hit restore and it'll restore the stock ROM slot to the backup I made a couple weeks ago.
...is it that simple? Is there anything I should or should not do?

It is that simple, just hit restore, select the file, then swipe the restore button.

Just one more question, if for any reason the restore fails... will Safestrap be unaffected?
What I mean by that is, I have another ROM (Hyperdrive) up and running that I can choose with Safestrap. If for some reason the restoration of the Stock ROM (in the stock ROM slot) fails, Safestrap will keep on working and I can choose Hyperdrive.
...and then if I reboot, I can still choose to boot up into Recovery mode with Safestrap. Is that correct?

If the restore fails you'll get a message saying that it failed, you can then just restore a different backup.

I've only got the one backup file that I'd made.
If it does fail, could I download a stock ROM from somewhere to put into the Stock ROM slot?
I'm not sure how Safestrap works, in my thinking if I screw up (wipe out) the Stock ROM slot then I've deleted Safestrap too. I think that's where my biggest worries are coming into play here. I'm hoping my understand of that is wrong.
...thanks by the way for your replies :good:
EDIT: I found a site that has a rooted stock ROM for the Verizon Galaxy Note 3. Downloading it now to be safe.

If for some odd reason your backup fails you could place one of the available ROMs on your sdcard and install it from there. In a worst case scenario you always have Odin and the .tar files to restore your phone.

Hopefully last question (sorry, want to make sure I have my head wrapped around this)
You said if the restore fails I'll simply get a failed message. ...if that happens, could I choose to boot with the Hyperdrive ROM and restart the phone with no problems?
I guess what I'm trying to ask is, isn't Safestrap running from that Stock ROM slot? Or does it run independently of whatever ROMs are in the slots.

If the restore fails it will not effect SafeStrap, you will just be able to boot up HyperDrive afterwards. The chances of it failing are extremely slim.

One more thing, more of a "heads up". During the restore if your screen turns off and pressing Power or Home doesn't turn it on just leave it and when the restore is done it will turn on or just reboot on it's own. Restores can take 5 minutes or more depending on how big of a backup file you have.

Thought you might like to know, my meeting for tomorrow was cancelled so I went ahead and tried the restoration. ...worked FLAWLESSLY!! Whew!!
So my phone is back, everything is running PERFECTLY.
Which brings me to a new question (hopefully you might know). I'm on 4.3 and do not want to get the OTA update for 4.4 from Verizon. It will download automatically (640 MBs or so), and a notification will appear that can't be swiped away.
Is there something in Titanium Backup that I can freeze to prevent the OTA update? To stop that non-swipable notification from appearing?

unroot using only sd card?

Ok so My phone is not recognized by a computer, i have tried different drivers, cords, ROMs, no matter what I do my phone is not recognized. I took it to the sprint store and the tech there who also has a rooted hero couldn't get it to mount either, the phone just doesn't bring up any mount notification at the top. I have a nandroid backup with stock ROM but even when I do that it is still rooted, they will not give me a new one until it is unrooted. My only other option is to make an insurance claim since I cannot flash it back to stock.
My Question: Is there any way to flash to stock and get unrooted using only my SD card (I can plug it into my card reader and it works fine). Thank you for any help you can give.

Sorry to report, the only option of unrooting is RUU, and this requires HTC Synch and a definate recognition on your PCs part.
Suggestions, anyone?
What version of Windows are you running? I have had issues with Windows 7 in the past. As weird as it sounds once I loaded PDAnet from the market on to my phone and the PDAnet client onto my computer. My phone was recognized. Is your computer charging the phone when plugged in?
its possible.. but you'd need Flashrec, an unrooted original 1.5 rom, and the original recovery image..
ie: use the custom recovery to flash the unrooted rom, then flashrec to flash the original recovery image.. then remove flashrec..
just an idea!
This brings up another question....
What does Sprint actually check?
Do you really have to get back to 100% stock, or would putting the original recovery image on get you through?
Any current or former Sprint techs willing to chime in? Just how perfect do we have to get it?

Actually, that just might work! Great idea chavo, very intuitive thinking!
I take back my last statement. I read somewhere flashrec doesnt work after youv flashed your imahe....google the unlockrs method on flashing a new recovery once already rooted; i think it involves some adb though :-(
Idk, thats as much as i know
I know it works.. but I have an unrooted rom in a nandroid backup from when rooting the Sprint Hero first started.. lol not many people have those laying around, as most used the Asroot2 method of rooting and not Flashrec to flash the recovery.

I have my first nandroid from when I followed this guide:

Would that be enough? Of was it already too modified when I did the nandroid backup?

Your nandroid wont work on another phone, and if it did, it would synch your contacts to their phones, passwords, apps, the whole shindig. Bad idea
We'll have to beg a dev for a stock 1.5 rom
you can use a nandroid from another Sprint Hero.. done that too when i got my replacement phone! If anyones willing..
RUU, don't sign into google. Download and install Flashrec and flash the recovery through that and create a nandroid backup.. it will be clean

Once again, very intuitive thinking! I thought maybe nandroid was device specific.
Sorry, no way in hell im RUU'ing after all the bricks. Ill stick with dcv2, its stock enough for me

Nandroid is device specific to a point.. If you go in to the nandroid folder on the SD card you will see a folder labled HT********** that is specific to your phone, however you can take a nandroid from another phone and place it in that folder and backup from that.
i'd do the RUU but i'm using the updated radio.
I use a mac, but if indeed it isn't the windows driver, and you have tried other roms, then it only leaves the kernel (and the usb cable and phone usb hwd ).
So use what ever methods you used for the rom flashing, and flash a kernel.
Some ideas : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=625940&page=1
( start at page 1 )
Just a thought.
isn't the nandroid image made right AFTER you root?
so then, that wouldn't be what you want.
Extract the stock rom from the RUU
ok.. here's an unrooted 1.5 Nandroid back up.
http://www.4shared.com/file/250722598/a6eddc31/NoRootNandroid.html
Download the zip, extract.. and place the folder NoRootNand on the SD card in SDCARD/nandroid/HT**********/
Boot into recovery, select restore as you would if you were restoring a backup you made -->Nand Restore-->HT**********--> and choose to restore NoRootNand
I'm using the RA-heroc-v1.6.2 recovery, so I am unable to verify if this is will work with an older recovery image.
if you have any questions feel free to ask.
Wow thank you everyone for all of the advice, i had all but given up hope since I had been all over google looking for an answer for about 2 weeks. I will try the nandroid backup above and report back. thank you everyone again, you may have just saved me an insurance claim.
Wow, glad I found this thread. I'm downloading that nandroid image right now because I'm going to probably end up taking my Hero in to get the dust cleaned out later this week. I think another option would be to extract the RUU and get the ROM.zip out of it, and then just flash that.

Ok I tried this and I am still rooted afterwards. I think that if you go to the sprint store and they can hit volume down and power, and get to the recovery menu then they will not take it back, no matter if the rom u are running is stock or not. any other ideas?

cwm recover not recognizing restore files

I recently rooted my phone and tried a few different roms. I'm currently on cyanogen mod 10.2. I used cwm to backup my original ROM. I copied the backup file to my computer and uploaded it to my dropbox. I formatted my SD card since it had a lot of junk on it. I copies them back and now they aren't being recognized. This is my original stock ROM and since this is my first time rooting I really want to keep a stock ROM on hand for easy access incase I mess something up and need my phone to work properly. Thanks for any help. Its also a Samsung s4 i337m from fido.
can you see the backup and it's just not letting you restore it or can you not see the backup at all?
i'll tell you to keep researching and troubleshooting but if all else fails, odin back to stock, reroot, install cwm and make a new stock backup again.
Its not appearing in cwm at all unless i have a restore that was on it post format and not copied off the computer. Like if I make a backup of my current ROM the stock one will appear and just hang in checking md5. If there are no backups other than the original stock one it isn't being recognized. Also it worked before I formatteebthe SD card.
when you formatted the card and then replaced the cwm backup, where did you place the backup?
for example: 0/clockworkmod/backup, /clockworkmod/backup, etc.
if you make a backup now, where does it save the new one?
i'm just running through the bases here.
Sorry I don't know the exact locatiotion but I just dragged and dropped the "Clockworkmod" That cwm created when I made my first restore to my PC. Formatted the SD card and just dragged and dropped it back to the SD card. The new restore saves in the same folder also.
i'm assuming they're both in something like sdcard1, extSdCard or external_sd /clockworkmod/backup.
if so, and you didnt change cwm versions (i.e. from 6.0.3.6 to 6.0.4.4), then something may have been corrupted when moving the backup folder back and forth.
Yes that seems about right. I didn't change anything on cwm, unless my ROMs did. If it is corrupted will it just hang indefinitely or is there a chance it can work? And is there any other way to do a restore?
i'm no recovery expert but if your backup is corrupt than i dont imagine there's a fix for it.
i accidentally deleted my stock backup a couple phones ago. in order to have a fully stock backup on the sd card again (in the event i needed/wanted to restore to the original factory setup), i had to odin back to the stock firmware and start over.

Can you have cwm not check for the md5? It's been awhile since I've used cwm. I use twrp.
Edit, doesn't look like you can. I just flashed cwm to see. Was the foxhound nandroid one you just made and it still doesn't restore?

Good, yea a restore and reboot can take longer than you think. And waiting seems like forever when you're expecting it to boot. You'll get used to it.

[Q] "com.google.process.gapps message wont dissapear

Hi everyone! I recently decided to install the 4.4.2 rom on my Galaxy Note 3 N9005 and I didn't like it because it obviously was buggy as ,entioned in the thread. So I wanted to go back to my nandroid backup which I had made before installing the rom. It all went right in CWM and no errors, so I rebooted my phone and got stuck at the glowing samsung logo, so after many fixes and things I tried which didn't work I flashed a pre-rooted stock rom for it and it all went well. I managed to restore to my nandroid finally and then I unlock my phone to find a "com.google.process.gapps has been stopped" message which wont go away when I tap "OK". It just comes back and gives me one second untill it comes back again. I really need help since I need my phone for work, I have tried reinstalling all the gapps, wont work, I have tried reflashing the stock rom and restoring my nandroid again, I have tried deactivating "Downloads" in the app manager but that wont fix it either and finally I have tried clearing the "app data" for all my apps but again, no luck. If anyone would be able to help me I would appriciate it very much. Thanks in advance!
You're probably gonna have to go back to complete stock. Grab your stock image and flash via odin, boot it up and see if it gives you the error without installing custom recovery and your backup. That way you'll know where the error lays.

I also tried restoring from an older backup which I had made like 2 months ago and the same problem remains, "com.google" message is still there. Any suggestions or should I just start over?

A nandroid backup is simple but monolithic. Most people also use Titanium Backup for the ability to restore selective stuff, or to restore to a completely different model of phone.
I had same issue
Bith titanium and nandroid restore.
Well only way to save your self. Completing wizard of first startup with feeling google..
And just restore user apps and data with titanium except google stuff..
This is the only healthy restore method so far i know that gapss.com keeps kool

So I somehow managed to go to settings and disable Play Services with the one second time line that I had before the message appears again, and the message stopped. So it must be something with Play Services. Since i'm new to android (and the Note 3 is my first android phone) I want to ask if there is a way to maybe reinstall Plaay Services?

Hi, there! I just got almost the same issue like you. Once update to custom 4.4.2, any nandroid backups which worked right before getting GAPPS' FC constantly. :crying: Try double wipes, flash 4.3 gapps full package, stop&restart android download, uninstall google play store update, etc. nothing can fix it. Only way stop the popup error, is flash stock rom. But, consequently, lose root access, even with the same method that rooted the stock rom before. I'll heard some guy said the 4.4.2 has different partition from 4.3 or older android rom. But don't mention how to restore the old partition way. So, hope anyone can help us out, thanks a lot.

[Q] Few questions on roms / widgets / etc

Hey, so I'm fairly new to the whole rooting and customizing Android, so please forgive me if I come accross "ignorant" or generally childish. I bought a galaxy note 3 the other day and researched what rooting did. After getting convince that rooting was "awesome," I actually managed to root. I also played with some Xposed modules because they were fairly simple and cool. After more research, I found out that Verizon had a locked bootloader which prevented me from using any other roms? I also read that verizon/att users can use safestrap but i couldn't exactly find some specifics for it. So whats the disadvantages of safestrap? Do specific roms have to be used?
Another concern, I'd like to get a faster rom than stock touchwiz, but i'd also like to find a rom that can use ART runtime as well as maintaining a nice multi window feature. I tried XHaloFloatingWindow and another xposed module, and I can't say I was pleased with them compared to the touchwiz one. I'd also like to maintain S-pen features? Does anybody know of any roms that may come close to fitting most of these topics?
Final, completely random question, The lg g3 has this lockscreen widget where when it rains out, drops of water will cover/slide down the entire lock screen on top of your notifications. I thought this was awesome, but wasn't sure if it was possible to get on a note 3.
Anyways, Hope to get some simple answers

Safestrap is as close to a custom recovery as we'll get, right now. Due to our bootloader, stock based rom are all we can use. However, we are not stuck with one rom. Check in the dev threads for roms compatible with your device. Also check the dev and general threads for more info on rooting, safestrap, and how to flash roms.

Not sure about your specific questions, as I don't use multiwindow or the other features you listed. But I thought I would point out, what method of root did you use? Make sure of what system your running at this point. beans or kitkat? You will have to select a rom based on that. Or vice versa, re-root if you find a rom that you prefer thats running different android version. Either one will run safestrap obviously, since there are roms for each. You will find pros and cons to each. The con that I'm currently experiencing on kitkat that has me thinking about going back is I can't seem to find a modem that will get me decent reception so I'm assuming at this point that its kitkat thats causing it. Just something more for you to research. Being new to it, you've got ALOT of material to read about. But if you've already rooted, sounds like you've got a decent idea of the process. For me, tutorial videos were a life saver

Alright so perhaps you can help me with just a few more concerns. I researched roms and such. I successfully downloaded safestrap, made a backup of my stock rom and put it on mycomputer. I also made a backup with titanium backup before that and it is also on the computer. I am looking at hyperdrive or jasminerom for the note 3. On there, it explains normal directions to install, but then it says to flash with odin, but when I read something about a tutorial how to install cutom roms on a website "Galaxynote3root" (I can't post the URL yet, says i'll be spamming) , it explained nothing of odin. What is odin? is it mandatory? Does my phone have it by default? hm.... Also i have a build number of NC4, does that build not work with NC2? sorry for inconvenience or annoying noobish questions. Thanks if you respond
So being on Kitkat, did you use the beans method that installed a rom with root basically built in already? And by saying you downloaded safestrap, is it successfully installed? When you boot the phone, do you get the safestrap bootup screen allowing to go into recovery?
If you've already gotten that far, your pretty well set to install either of those roms.

Well i rooted my phone via towelroot. I got safestrap hooked up and installed, so in other words when i reboot, yes it does have the splash screen. I am on kitkat as well. but do i need to install some sort of odin or something? sorry
I think as long as the rom's op says it's based on nc2 or nc4, you should be good. You should not need to worry about odin, since you're already on kk.
Since you're new, I'd suggest not touching the stock slot. It gives you a fall back if something goes wrong. Make sure you understand using safestrap, and start trying some stuff out.

Sounds like he rooted the nc4 with towelroot, cuz he started on nc4. And sounds like ss is working for him, if he's made a backup.

Good man.
If you find something that you don't know or understand, search that thread for an answer. Then ask if you don't find an answer. And always try to give any other details you think might help.
As long as you remember search is your friend first...then ask...you will almost always find people to help you out!

alright alright I'm very sorry for this final question as I actually have tried to search for this but only got comparisons between titanium backup and safestrap. So, if I were to make a titanium backup right now, after the fact that i made a safestrap backup or installation, will that effect anything? I'm really really sorry if these questions are beyond beginner, I just like to play it safe.

Nope. Tibu backs up specific apps and it's associated data and stores it on sd. When you open tibu, it gets it's info from files it stores on sd. Recovery backs up your entire rom environment, but doesn't actually touch sd card user space.
This is why tibu is so helpful. Everything pops up that you had backed up, even on a new rom.
I'm not familiar with the towelroot method. Only the old Kingo for jb, or the beans method for kk. Sounds like your good to go for any KK roms, and Lefty seems familiar, good deal. Not sure how old you are or how far back your computer knowledge goes, so this may do you no good. Odin doesn't go on your phone, it goes on your computer. I always think of it as the old school DOS, or like now when you boot to command prompt if windows isn't working. Its like a back door when your phone operating system isn't working, or if you need to make changes to part of the system that would otherwise need to be running to make those changes FROM the phone. Its flashes the changes TO the phone from your computer instead.
I'm rambling. Its too early. Anyhow, glad your getting things moving along. You can try roms in various rom slots, but you may have issues. I had some roms work well, others not well at all. The ones that have problems, they seem to work better in the stock slot. So you have to wipe the stock slot and flash it there. No big deal, just don't goof up, flash it all at once. If you pause, take a potty break and the battery dies, whatever, don't forget, you have no operating system at that point. Thats when Odin would come into play

Alright so quick update. I successfully installed both roms into slots 1 and 2 respectively. Everything went okay, I rebooted system, but the screen just stayed black. They aren't loading, i still can go back to stock rom. But uhm any idea as to why this is occuring? Could it be the NC4/NC2 build things?
In the hyperdrive rom for the note 3, it says it will work with verizon and also states that after the initial reboot after flashing the rom, there will be a 10 minute wait until it actually boots up. I'd say i've waited 15 minutes and nothing has shown up. So I'm assuming something went wrong. Perhaps i should try to reflash it?
EDIT: I read the directions further ahead and managed to flash a file via odin for the first time, now im getting a rom's boot animation which is good. I hope this'll work !
Edit 2: I successfully installed it and booted it up, everything went okay, I restored my titanium backup and then titanium prompted me to restart. I restarted, and now its bootlooping android.process.acore or something like that is crashing everything =/

In JasmineRom's instructions it says to flash a file called unified_KK_Firmware_RE.tar.md5. After flashing it, it booted up to the new rom.But seemingly once i restarted after titanium backup restored everything it crashed. I then cleared all the cache and data through a factory reset in the safestrap settings and it started up normally. Am I not going to be able to restore my things through titanium? I would send you a link to the odin flash file, but I can't until I have a certain number of posts

No need. I know what you're saying. So flashing that file shouldn't have been really necessary, given you're already on nc4. But it doesn't hurt and should not have caused what you described. So you have roms in stock, slot 1, and slot 2? Which ones bootloop?
For tibu, I would uninstall, reboot, reinstall. Somehow it didn't like you doing that.

Alright so as we speak right now, I have slot 1 with jasminerom and stock which should be the untouched stock rom of course. I have a backup through safestrap of that. I will uninstall titaniumbackup and reinstall and see if that works?
edit: sorry I feel as though I'm being unclear as I can hardly comprehend my own messages. Before, both slot 1 and stock were bootlooping. This bootloop came after titanium backup promted me to restart. But when i cleared the cache through the factory reset, the slot1 rom started to work agin (jasminerom), I haven't tried stock rom to see if it works yet. I'm currently on jasminerom about to re-restore my apps through titanium backup like you said.

alright i finished re-restoring through titanium backup. Once it finished it provided a notification saying "batch complete, 66 elements failed" Right now all my apps are here and everything is seeming to work. Should I restart to see if it bootloops again?

You should be ok. How many apps did you try to restore, if 66 failed?

[Q] Sanity Check. About to Flash first ROM to my S5.

Quick Sanity Check here. I mainly just want to confirm that I have all my ducks in a row before I pull the trigger on installing my first ROM on my 3 mo old S5. I have flashed ROMS in the past on other devices, but it has been 3 years or so, and then it was on the first day I got said device. I have been using my S5 for a few months now, and I don't want to lose any of my accumulated data. So here goes.
Running Stock 4.4.4 on G900V
I am Rooted via Towelroot, and I have installed Safestrap recovery. I also completed a Nandroid backup.
I completed a Titanium backup of all my apps and system settings just now.
I plan to flash the MOAR Rom to stock slot via Safestrap, and upon completion, do a restore from Titanium.
My hope is that by doing that, I will wind up with a custom ROM, but with all my contacts, sms messages, Apps and app settings, which is actually the entire point of this post.
Am I right in assuming that if I follow those steps, I should be good?
Your advice/confirmation/response will be appreciated!! Thanks!

Make sure to backup call log, and the sms in titanium as well. The easiest way to keep everything the same app and data wise is to wipe all partitions besides micro sd and data, and then flash do a slightly dirty flash. Thats what I did, and it worked just fine. Just make sure to back up, and after you flash, make sure to odin the oa8 kernel as well. Also make sure to flash the kernel before first boot. Btw my phone took a while to boot up, so dont be too worried if it takes longer than 5 minutes. Mine took like 10-15 minutes, and has been rock solid since. Hope this helps!

Thanks Thorkle! Are you sure I only need to flash OA8 Kernel? When I look at JKRuse's instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-galaxy-s5/development/vzwstock-based-tw-rom-t3024731
It mentions that it is important to flash the entire firmware, not just the kernel...
"6. flash VZW_BOA8_RETAIL_FIRMWARE_ONLY.tar.md5 Make sure it is the retail firmware and not just the kernel"
Of course, the link that is provided to said firmware does not work, and I have not been able to find a working one on the net so far. Anyone who has a link to that firmware, please share...
I got it installed and working. I am loving this new ROM!

Several people that have restored data, even in TIBU have run into problems. The suggested method is a full wipe and clean install. With that being said I resorted some data with TIBU and never had any issues.

So far it seems to be working very well for me. I only restored data from about 10-15 apps, none of which were red in TIBU. Messages, Contacts, email, etc.
So far, my phone feels much smoother than it did on 4.4.4. Battery life is good as well. I fell asleep with 55% last night, and about an hour after waking up this morning, I noticed I was at 51%. That is a marked improvement. Here is hoping that sentiment holds.

if you look at the URL for the firmware, then look at the other URLs to download files in that post it will give you the clue to fix the firmware link to make it work. TIP: add a t to the end.
