you will need to unlock to flash custom zip, but u can relock after

Question - why? What do you want to root your phone for if not to use the wonderful tools of root. Why do you think fully rooting your phone will harm something. Locked or unlocked bootloader is not going to affect your phone. Rooted stock rom with recovery will not make it act funny.... Sorry not putting you out there but just asking why? Feel free to ignore me if you must...
Edit: Sorry to answer your question like the post above said you can root and then lock it right back up if that is your preference

I have come from an HTC Desire, which I rooted and had a custom rom (Cyganonmod) on and was very happy with it.
I am still not sure of what I would gain by doing the same with my Nexus 4 ?
any advice is much appreciated.
Is this new Cyganonmod installer the best way to go?

This phone is built for rooting and modding. You wont know what benefit you have until you either read up and see if the mods are ones you want or actually flash a rom. Sure try the CM installer but if you dont toolkits or just basic knowledge of android can get this phone roooted in minutes.
the CM rom on your HTC will give you the same benefits on your Nexus 4

I used a toolkit but honestly you can unlock manually by just booting into bootloader mode. Go into development and try Wugs Toolkit.... Rooting the phone is easy and all methods are relatively the same.
I do not see anything wrong with giving CM a try as well

I recommend you to stick to your original plan, its your phone, do what you like, you don't need to flash custom roms if you don't want to. I am using stock kernel and stock KitKat right now and the performance is excellent.
Follow these instructions to unlock bootloader, install latest kitkat factory image, install custom TWRP recovery, and root. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312
The links to fastboot package and driver required is in my signature.

After you do all that, in bootloader menu, you can flash back the stock recovery (recovery.img), which is location in the "image-occam-******.zip" of the factory image. (fastboot flash recovery recovery.img)
Then lock your bootloader by "fastboot oem lock". You can also use BootUnlocker to lock and unlock your bootloader on the fly while in the phone, without losing your data, since everytime you do fastboot oem unlock, it will wipe the entire device.
By using stock rom, stock recovery, stock kernel and temporarily unroot (SuperSU) or hide root (SuperSU paid version), it allows you to receive future OTA updates from Google. If you want to modify your phones more while staying with stock, read up on Xposed Framework and its module Gravity Box, which is not yet compatible with Android 4.4 but will be eventually.
Just remember if you don't have custom recovery, once something goes wrong and your phone can't boot, its very hard to save the data inside. Once you have custom recovery like TWRP, you can make a backup of your stock image (which also backup your stock kernel) and try out other custom roms and easily go back to stock, then you can flash stock recovery again to receive OTA updates.

This METHOD was developed ONLY for an UNLOCKED Motorola Droid Razr Maxx HD XT926m phone that is already updated to the last version of KitKat 4.4.2 (System version "183.46.15.XT926.Verizon.en.US").
IF YOU HAVE AN LOCKED BOOTLOADER AND TRY THIS METHOD IT WILL BE ONLY YOUR RESPONSABILITY IF YOU DAMAGE YOUR PHONE !!!
My Motorola XT926m had an UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER (ICS 4.0.4) and I flashed via RSD Lite the last stock firmware, "183.46.15"... After that, I was, of course, unhappy, because I read on different forums that this firmware version didn't support root... I tried to download the Hydrogen Peroxide xt926 application that others users recommended here on XDA forum, without success.
But now, after I applied this method, my phone is again rooted... Enjoy the steps, but be carefull, it was developed for XT926 phones with UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER!
1. Download the files "VZW_XT926_4.4.2-KDA20.62-10.1_CFC_1FF.xml" and "VZW_XT926_4.4.2-KDA20.62-15.1_CFC_1FF.xml" from the Motorola firmware site: "motofirmware.com/files/file/"...
2. Unpack the files...
3. Substitute/replace the "gpt", "tz" files (FROM the folder with "15.1" version TO the folder with "10.1" version)... You should replace all the files that "RSD Lite" will tell you that don't fit when you try to flash the new stock firmware. You will obtain a MODIFIED version of "183.46.10" stock KitKAt 4.4.2 firmware!!!
4. Flash this MODIFIED "10.1" firmware with "RSD Lite v6.1.5 Multi-Flash" (without using Rsd Script Generator.jar), but don't forget to remove the first two 'getvar' lines in the xml file.
5. Download and install the "Towel Root.apk" and root the phone...
6. Now your phone should be ROOTED.
What to do NEXT:
7.Download from the Play Store and install "Superuser.apk" made by ClockWordMode and after reboot the application will ask you to update SU binary. In my case, the SU binary didn't support an online update and I installed the "Superuser.zip" file downloaded from the ClockWorkMode site, via recovery method, in order to gain this update (you can do this as well, if you already have a TWRP or CWM recovery installed on your phone). With the other version of superuser, like "SuperSU.apk" or "Superuser.apk" ("eu.chainfire.supersu-2.apk", the last version, 5.6mb, for example) you will need to follow the same steps...
8. Using "Total Commander.apk", you can go to "File System root"/"Etc"/"installrecovery.sh", and finally rename this last file... Or you can use "ES3 File Explorer.apk" in order to rename the same "installrecovery.sh" file in "Device"/"Etc" folder (choose, for example, the name "installrecovery.shbak")...
9. Flash with "Flashify.apk" (downloaded form PLay Store) a new "recovery img.": "TWRP.img" (2.8.3.0) or "CWM.img" (6.0.4.8) for KitKat... You can find them on "rootjunkysdl.com/?device=Droid%20Razr%20HD&folder=Firmware"...
10. If you flashed "TWPR recovery.img" you will need to install "Stericson.busybox-1.apk" (from Play Store...), because TWRP works with this busy box... (You could install "TWRP.apk" as well, but you must be careful, because you will need to be able to boot into Recovery mode directly from your phone (with the combination key), not from this app... Many times, the phone is able to boot into recovery mode from TWRP application, but not from the bootloader... That's why it is better to uninstall TWRP application if you have this problem). If you flashed a "CWM.img" you can install "RomManager.apk".
11.Now it is the time to backup your system to SD card!
That's it. My phone was unlocked, and I didn't have any issue following all this steps... If you're locked don't try it.
But.. If you're locked you could instead use an application named 'Safestrap' for some purposes (read more here on XDA forum please), because is destinated for the phones with locked bootloader...

I know you took a lot of time to write this up, but there is a downgrade method posted on here already. Also, there is no need to rename recovery.sh. All you need to do after flashing recovery is power off the phone and immediately boot straight back into recovery so the install script completes.
To answer your question, no, you can't unlock .15.

Correct. That's why this method is flawed and probably should be pulled before someone bricks their phone.

Yeah, unfortunately this post makes no sense, I mean, if you accidently flash the gpt.bin, you're screwed... and so many risks, plus, you can't flash custom recovery, and you can maybe downgrade the system and boot, but you still can't downgrade the bootloader...

This method is for an XT926 with UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER, with the last 183.46.15 update and the root access lost. I only described the steps that I already done with my phone. My Maxx HD is working and has root access again... I flashed custom recovery too (TWRP 2.8.3.0), I haven't any other problem.

The piece you are referring to that doesn't work on .15 is the unlock and root. The downgrade should work on an unlocked phone.
That aside, your steps are very confusing and could easily cause a locked user to brick their phone. Please clarify or I will continue reporting this thread until it gets removed.

Hello all! I am newly signed up but i have been lurking in here for quite a while now. I am like that I usually try not to post and just figure out what I need to do by research and trial and error! But lately I think i may have too much research. I have spent the last week looking up and trying to figure out what I need to do to get what I want lol.
I have a Verizon SM-G900V which has been rooted with towel root, using the flash back to NCG method. I have installed SuperSU, Flashfire, and, BusyBox.
I want to upgrade my OS to the newest version,(5.1 Lollipop I believe?) while retaining root and allowing me to wi-fi tether. What I am not sure about is how to go about this properly. I was about to install Safestrap but I am not sure it is compatible with my build which somehow magically changed to NE when I looked at my About Phone in Settings. I am actually not even sure I need Safestrap either because I have read many conflicting tutorials and info in the past week of research. I am totally new to Safestrap and have never used a custom rom before. I have however rooted my S5 and gotten it to tether fine but then I made sure never to OTA update. Recently was forced to factory restore because if what I assume where Touchwiz problems(The problems have been gone since I reset) and now I would like to see if I can upgrade my OS .
Any help would be awesome and some points in the right direction much appreciated.
SafeStrap is a little inconvenient to use in Lollipop, but it's a great safety net to keep in place. It allows you to take a snapshot of your system and restore it later. If you lack this safety net and something goes wrong with your OS, you have no choice but to start from scratch.
All you have to do to use SafeStrap with Lollipop: flash a KitKat kernel (you can do this with the NL1 flasher app) from the phone while it's running Lollipop, reboot into SafeStrap, and do what you have to do. You then must re-flash a "safestrap-flashable" Lollipop kernel from within SafeStrap before you leave it, or your operating system won't be able to boot.

Your firmware version is different but it's still KitKat, so all of the same advice applies.

Have you try this? you will have root on the latest factory firmware and able to install Safestrap.

That would work, as it involves flashing a BOK3 factory image and then rooting it.

So the method you are linking above would be the better route to go, correct? Because the other method would update my bootloader to BOK3 which wont let me downgrade to NCG if I want to easy root again, right?
Sorry for all the questions here I just wanna make sure I get it right.

Both root methods will work for you. The advantage of the "Keep Root" method I linked to is that you would still be able to downgrade later. As long as you don't flash anything with a BOE or newer bootloader, you can downgrade. So BOD is safe, BOE1, BOG5, and BOK3 can not be downgraded.

OK so I am gonna go with your linked method. I dont wanna get stuck with one of those bootloaders. I should still be able to use safestrap with your method right? And tho I have never done it before I was entertaining the idea of flashing a custom ROM. That should still be possible with your method, correct?

You can use SafeStrap with either method. But when you're on Lollipop, you must flash a kitkat kernel to boot into safestrap, then you must re-flash your lollipop kernel BEFORE leaving SafeStrap or you won't be able to boot into Lollipop. It's not as complicated as it sounds.

Yea I know, all of this sounds complicated but I understand it lol. But would I still be able to use a custom ROM using your method, I dont see why I couldnt, I just want to make sure I am ok?

Yes. You can use any TouchWiz-based ROM, all of which can be found in the "Verizon Galaxy S 5 Android Development" section of the forum, and no other section.
ROMs can be flashed using SafeStrap or with Flashfire.

Im just barely familiar with SafeStrap, and have never ever used FlashFire. Which of the 2 would you say is better to use?

I have a slight preference for SafeStrap because I am accustomed to using custom recovery environments on previous phones (ClockworkMod Recovery, and later TWRP). SafeStrap is a modified TWRP environment, customized to work within the limitations imposed by the Verizon S5's locked bootloader.
FlashFire can do nearly everything that SafeStrap can do, the difference being is that it functions like an app. It's also more convenient to flash zips if you're on lollipop, because you don't have to **** around with flashing different kernels to boot into it, you just open the app, select the zip, and flash it. The downside to this is that if your OS is completely screwed up and won't boot, you can't access FlashFire.
But if that happens and you have SafeStrap recovery environment installed, you can flash a kitkat kernel with Odin and boot into SafeStrap to restore your nandroid backup, then flash a lollipop kernel and boot into your now-working phone.
For those reasons, I find it advantageous to use both.

OK so both it is lol. I see in the link to the thread which has the keep root tutorial it has 2 extra files a tether file and a batch de-bloater. I understand what the tether is but what exactly is the de-bloater? Also how do I install them, cause I definitely want the tether? Also, I noticed that my phone has some gone to a NE9 kitkat build, I would have to reflash to NCG, reroot and then install safestrap correct?

The de-bloater is just a script that deletes unnecessary apps that came pre-installed on the phone. You use it by flashing the debloater zip in either SafeStrap or FlashFire. Personally, I prefer to use Titanium Backup to "freeze" the unwanted apps, because they can be easily reactivated if necessary. Once those apps are deleted by the debloater, you can't retrieve them. Probably everything in the script needs to die anyway, but if you actually like any of the extra stuff that came on your phone you'll want to avoid using that method.
The tether patch is installed the same way, by flashing it, but you only need it if you're staying with the stock OS. If you're installing a custom ROM, don't bother because they will have already implemented it.
If your phone says NE9 but it is rooted, don't worry about it. You'd only need to flash the NCG kernel if you have to use towelroot to regain root access. So just install SafeStrap and/or FlashFire.
Then do a nandroid backup in SafeStrap of your current setup. That way, if something goes catastrophically wrong with your Lollipop upgrade adventure you can, with a little work, get back to where you are now with all of your apps and settings intact.
Then flash the rooted Lollipop image in the "Keep Root" method thread.

Cool, awesome thank you. So if I am running lollipop, I would have to use Odin to flash a kitkat kernel if I wanted to access to safestrap, right? It would need to be a rooted kernel too, right? Also was wondering if you could point me in the direction of the proper kernels I need. I have seen so many different NCG and other build kernels I am not sure which I should DL.

Yes, flash a KitKat kernel to get into SafeStrap from Lollipop. I don't think it matters which version.
NCG, NE9, NHA, NI2, and NK2 are all KitKat.
OA8, OC4, OD5, OE1, OG5, and OK3 are all Lollipop.

OK rooted phone all went well. Installed Tether patch and now when I connect to wifi it doesnt work. I get a DNS error message in my browser and play store wont work, basically nothing will work when I am connected to wifi. Any thoughts on what to do? Was thinking maybe of going to jkruse's custom rom but not sure if that will help. If I do go to that rom will I need to go back to Kitkat or can I just use a flashfire and flash as is?
Update: The DNS error I seem to have fixed, but my question still stands for the jkruse's ROM. Also is it better to use a custom ROM? I have never really used one, so I am curious.

Absolutely. I just arrived at work or I would post a full detailed guide, but here's the run down.
You have to downgrade from 5.0 (OC1) to 4.2.2 (NC2).
Once you've done that, root with towelroot.apk, install SuperSU (I prefer chainfire), then install Busybox, (I prefer Stephan Erickson) and then finally, install Safestrap Recovery V3.75.
Then boot into Safestrap recovery, wipe/factory reset, and then flash the ROM you want.
I would gladly post links to everything but as I said, I'm at work. If nobody else does before I clock out. I'll definitely help you out.

Sorry guys work got the best of me. I just got permission from a couple of developers to re-do a thread that elaborates more into how to root, flash etc. So that will be up by the end of the week (hopefully). My method I will be posting is completely different than what I'm telling you here. Because my guide will let you flash an a single file using flashfire that will already have root, xposed, viper audio, + extras already installed and configured. What I'm posting below is the main method being used.
In the mean time:
Download and install Samsung Mobile Drivers http://developer.samsung.com/technical-doc/view.do?v=T000000117, Reboot before connecting your phone.
Download https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95784891001615211 - This is a stock NC2 (Android 4.4.2) image you will flash to down grade from 5.0. (Temporarily).
Download Towelroot https://towelroot.com/tr.apk - This is towelroot, it exploits a vulnerability in android 4.4.2 that allows you to gain root without even rebooting your phone.
Download SuperSU https://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip?retrieve_file=1 - You can of course user any superuser app. I am personally a big supporter of Chainfire and his applications.
Download Safestrap Safestrap-KLTEVZW-NCG-3.75-B03.apk http://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/?id=4718#downloads - This will be your recovery.
Download Odin http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2711451 Make sure it's version 3.10.0 and only download odin from that post please. There are obnoxious amounts of fake odin downloads that come up in a google search that may contain malicious code.
Don't forget Busybox https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=stericson.busybox&hl=en
Also download any ROM you want to flash, BEFORE doing this. Unless of course you want to stay on rooted 4.2.2

0. Backup. Back up everything.
1. Place Towelroot, SuperSU, Safestrap, and Busybox on your SD card.
2. Bring your phone into download mode. (Power Button+Volume Down+Home Button)
3. Connect your phone to your computer using usb. (Back of the computer usb is always better)
-Make sure you installed the Samsung Drivers
4. Bring up odin and place N900AUCUCNC2_Full_Odin_Tar.tar.md5 file in the AP slot. (Odin might hangup and freeze for a minute. It's normal, don't click or do anything, just wait.)
5. Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time on odin should already be checked. Just make sure.
6. Under ID:COM on odin, it should read 0:[COM4] in light-ish blue color.
7. Odins message should read <ID:0/004> Added!!
--Numbers might be different for each person.
8. Click Start and wait a while. After 15-20 minutes your phone will eventually boot into Android 4.4.2
And in this exact order:
9. Install Towelroot and click 'make it rain'
10. Install SuperSU, Be sure to disable knox when it asks. If it hangs at all just force close SuperSU and try again.
11. Install Busybox
12. Install Safestrap
Done.
When you want to flash a ROM simply place it on your SD card and flash it using Safestrap. Make sure when flashing that the ROM comes with the OC1 kernel. If it doesn't you'll need to flash it after flashing the ROM.
As I said above I'm going to be posting an entire thread this week dedicated to rooting, flashing, and working with this phone. It's going to have the most updated information that I have and an easier and quicker method that doesn't require Safestrap. I'm going to ask mods and hopefully it will get a sticky.

Yes you can install directly from the Playstore or flash a zip file. Either works just fine as long as everything is installed in the correct order you'll be good to go. Allow me a bit and I can upload the .apk directly to my google drive account and provide a link. You could really download SuperSU and Busybox from the Playstore if you wanted to. It just takes a bit longer.

Of course. After you downgrade you then have access to Safestrap, which is a custom recovery environment you use to flash ROMs with. (Almost) every ROM for our phones already have SuperSU installed, if it doesn't it will specify in the thread that you need to flash SuperSU using Safestrap. But there's only a few that require it. Most of them already include the OC1 kernel inside the ROM as well. (OC1 is the only kernel that will run 5.0 on our phones).

If the following doesn't help please explain your problem in a little more detail for me, write out each step you are doing and I will try to see which might be causing the issue.
Safestrap is very touchy and actually isn't compatible with 5.0 (OC1). To boot into Safestrap after flashing 5.0, if you want to do a backup (which I wouldn't recommend with safestrap, I've personally only had bad luck) you need to either flash the NC2 kernel with odin, or download and install http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-3-att/development/nc2-flasher-app-unsafe-t2989141. I suggest downloading the .apk. All you do is flash the NC2 kernel with the flasher app and it will automatically boot you into safestrap. After you do whatever it is you need to do, (flash patches, etc) you then flash the OC1 kernel and reboot. Well I was was able to down grade with out a hitch. If I knew it was so simple, I would have done it a long time ago. I finally was able find all the info I needed about ROMs available and how to`s but before I start flashing, I`m going to have do a lot more reading on this awesome site. Now since my note 3 is no longer in service and out of warranty, I`m assuming I don`t have to settle for a at&t rom. I`m just going to use as a little tablet with just wifi and bluetooth. That is after have used it as a guinea pig, then I`ll start on rooting my note 4. Thanks again for your help in getting me going, phlashb4k.:good:

It was like talking to Time Warner.

So now that I'm off the roof.
The safestrap that you had a link to wouldn't run at all.
I mean it loads and looks like it works tells me that it is installed and that the recovery is installed but won't boot to recovery. That is with mine Safestrap-HLTE-3.72-kk-B01.apk
That is the same thing that happened with your version Safestrap-KLTEVZW-NCG-3.75-B03.apk
I finally unloaded everything and started over from 4.4.2 factory stock
order that I got to work was
towelroot
su
busybox pro
safestrap B03
uninstall safestrap B03
uinstall busybox and install it again
install safestrap B01
uninstall B01
restart busybox pro
install B01
And finally I got it to show up correctly and boot properly, recovery and all.
Everything installed but now........
It wants to "update again"
Every time it updates, it crashes the system and I start over.
Gonna try it one more time and then go back to rooted 4.4.2 probably if it doesn't work.
I wonder if Verizon is this bad.
It's like when I had Time Warner's all in one router modem. Crash o matic every time they "updated" something
Now with an Asus RT-68U and Motorola modem I'm fine.
Incorporated the stagefright fix I mentioned earlier and it got all but one file.
Shows good in Lookout but CCVE-2051-6602 shows up in Ziperium.
Just turned off auto mms for this second and see what AT&T screws up with their update her when it finishes.
It's been a long ugly day and has nothing to do with this but I'm tired.

Verizons Note 3 doesn't have a locked bootloader. Just AT&Ts. Which is why we have to jump to get root and such

Supernoob question. I plan on doing this soon with my new note. However, I was wondering if the hotspot is automatically unlocked in 4.2.2. or do I need to download a special rom for that? thanks

let me first start by thanking the good people of xda community for your kind help and contribution. It would not be possible for people like me with extremely limited rooting knowledge to even have the courage to attempt a root if it wasn't for the good people like you here.
I just got my Axon 7 and is trying to work up the courage to attempt a root following tenfar's instruction (I'm extremely scared of bricking my new phone) I also hope that I can continue to play Pokemon Go after I root it, but unfortunately with the latest update, it seems impossible until I discovered Magisk. My question may seem fairly simple but it is extremely confusing to me. In Magisk's instruction it says that in order to install Magisk, one must remove any kind of root and systemless Xposed. Since my phone is not rooted, I do not have to go through the step of removing root and xposed? However, it says that I have to download Magisk and flash it. My confusion rests on the concept on how I can flash Magisk if my phone is not rooted? I thought one can only flash a rom etc after the phone is rooted? So should I follow tenfar's root first and root my axon 7 then try to flash Magisk? or the other way around? Any advice /tips/precautions/high level guides regarding both rooting using the tenfar method and flashing Magisk is greatly appreciate! I may suck at rooting and etc, but what I can do is follow all instructions carefully. Thank you everyone, you are the best!
To flash something (a ROM or an app, like Magisk) you need to have a custom recovery installed (such as TWRP, you boot into the custom recovery to flash the .zip file that contains whatever you want to flash) which generally means having an unlocked boot-loader, neither of those has anything to do with root (other than that they make rooting the phone considerably easier) they don't require it and they don't do it by themselves.
@Nameless One is right, you need a custom recovery (TWRP) to be able to flash Magisk. There is a thread about this in the forums.
However I would advise you to wait until next week when a new update is expected and perhaps some changes to the bootloader unlock policy and hopefully stock ROMs, which will make it much easier to solve any problems.
If you insist on going through with this now, you should take backup images of various partitions so that you can restore your phone to stock to receive the OTA.
How does it work if you have uninstall any kind of root? I would think root would be a requirement.

It right on the top of their post
"This mod requires boot image modification, so unlocked bootloaders are required!"
What it does is implement it's own system-less root management module that will not be detected like other root methods. But will conflict with other root methods hence you have to be unrooted
Unlocked bootloader let's you flash custom recovery. That in turn let's you flash anything else including root modifications. In essence tenfar's boot image is modified to allow root. This will do something similar but you have to have the BL unlocked since patching boot image will change the signature.
iirc magisk alters the bootimage, so you need a unlocked Bootloader go get it to work.
And no, root is not a preq, you can use magisk to /aquire/ root though.
What u need:
- unlocked bootloader
- custom recovery
- a somewhat clean and not already modified system

If you have copies of the stock images you will probably be able to fix your phone if something goes wrong and you want to go back to stock.
Not having these copies is like jumping out of a plane without a parachute and hoping you'll hit a haystack, without the pitchfork in it...
There are never any guarantees, every phone is different and as you are playing with important partitions there is a chance, generally through users fault, to brick your device...

Well, the stock images have not been released for the B27 update, which would make it much easier to recover if something goes wrong. However, unofficial images are available (look around the forums). So at this point it is your call, just be careful.
