What do you want in a ROM? (Things we don't have) - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I'm thinking of getting back into development (I last did development for the Droid 3 and Droid Bionic), and I'm one to make my own standalone ROM to share with everyone.
Here's where I need your suggestions: What do we have in our ROMs already that can be improved, and what do we not have in the ROMs we have that you want? It can range from theming to mods to just anything.
This would help me greatly in making my decision to start developing again or not.
Thanks.
-Sam

Right now the only thing I really want is a nice dark ICS/Holo theme for NC2.

That would be amazing.

Smart lockscreen: enable/disable based on location (home/work) or time of day, integrated directly into ROM.
Native reverse tethering support
Mass storage mode
Multiwindow/halo windows
Unlimited OTG
Programatically changeable lockscreen (thru Tasker w/ api or shell)
That's all I can think of on the spot.

Perhaps some kind ultra debloat ROM? Like an Anti Goog, Anti VZW, anti Sammy ROM.
Their functionality could be added afterwards as desired. First thing I do after installing a ROM is freeze 100 plus items (even on a debloated ROM.)

I can help you with an ultra debloat ROM if you would would like to test what I have developed. I took the stock Kitkat ROM and debloated it down to less that 600MB. I have tested it for a few days now and everything is working perfectly but I want a few more testers.

-Tablet Mode
-LED Control based on notification type
-Navbar/Navigation Bar customization to add more buttons to custom apps
-Recent apps in a different view, i think it's called "tiled" where you can see more at once horizontally, rather than vertically
-Double tap the "action bar" of any app to make it a floating window, and double tap it again to "maximize" the app...similar to MS Windows

Ok google functions from the moto x (not the google experience launcher ones) on the fly themeing for everything ocons status bar colors toggle colors ect...

Interesting. I have been pretty busy and have been running the original firmware and Beans version 2.
Hopefully I will get around to checking out the Kitkat release soon.
I wonder if there could be a tool or Mod that could be a bloat configurator that would work on a ROM like Beans or Hyper drive or stock.
Maybe it is a superior solution to cook a dedicated debloat ROM instead of some script that is too difficult to make work with other ROMs?

Debloated aosp style or cyanogenmod

one thing that's importnat is having the security for exchange email bypassed. i have no need for mandatory password on my phone just for my corporate email.

Languages
my problem with Verizon's based room is that they don't enable more languages like french.

USB 3 without forcing wifi mode if thats possible? My only complaint on nc2 is the radio which i will fix tonight, and the fact the notification bar is forced to have those horrible widgets, i want stock KK notification bar

Nice thread. I'll keep an eye out.

I also think some more intuitive lockscreen widgets would be nice; quick Google-search widget, minimalistic text weather widget, iPhone-like text/notification previews (possible with Tasker btw) customizable to just sms sender or parent application (currently developing myself also), and BIGGEST THING:
BIGGEST ROM FEATURE REQUEST: along with remote lock/remote wipe, have a remote BRICK! This will guaranteed protect your sensitive data and render the phone useless to thief! Topping the ice cream: along with wiping bootloader, replace with homebrew one with NO download/fastboot mode, just on-screen derogatory message and maybe a contact number. HA!

I was hoping they would change it with Froyo, guess that is not the case. Its the worst lock screen I have seen on any phone, period. I actually don't mind touchwiz but this lock screen is so ugly, it does not go with the tw launcher at all. You may need to go with a custom rom or some app that may change it.
Yeah i guess was hoping i wouldnt have to go the app install route, more system overhead :'-(

Widgetlocker is our only hope
you can use the Mod to restore the Android Lockscreen but it caused a bootloop on mine and I had to reflash so...forget it
I wish we had the Fascinate Lockscreen it uses the "Fit Puzzle" even if you dont have a message
Or just download No Lock from the market for free and remove the lockscreen..
Check out these 2 threads if you're interested in reverting to the stock android lockscreen.
[MOD] Android Stock Lockscreen for JM8,JPH,JPK,JM9,JPM,JPA,JP6

The problem with Widgetlocker is that it is a bit funny I've found sometimes (it isn't always instantaneous. My main problem with the Samsung lock screen these days, is that you can't disable the music widget on it (so if it's sitting in my pocket, the music sometimes turns on and off. I worked around it originally using another music player, but now I just put up with widget locker
and then what? a crappy lockscreen is better than none

thanks! they both seem waaaaaaaaaay to hard for me to follow though!
Its simple as overwriting a file in the phone rom (have to be rooted)
I gave up cause I tried the JPM odexed file and it just gave me a bootloop and I had to reflash
Using Root Explorer (requires root I believe) it's really easy to do: just download the android.policy.odex (from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=784992) according to your firmware version and replace the original in the folder system/framework. Do a backup of the original in your computer before.
To replace the file, put it in the internal sd of the phone through usb and then move it to the system/framework folder using root explorer. Then reboot the phone.
Easier to than to explain, really.

Out of curiosity, why don't you guys like the lockscreen?
Another: se video
http://it.androlib.com/android.application.com-teslacoilsw-widgetlocker-jqpAj.aspx
You know the stock lock screen looks lame and gives almost zero "look at me flavor" BUT... after using the stock lock screen I came to the realization that this one provides an effortless usability by being able to swipe the screen in any direction, with any finger or thumb, without looking and with any hand. It takes no effort and that is just plain good. My $.02
The problem with the bootloops with the stock android lockscreen mod is caused by file owner and group.
I faced this issue and after 3 re-flashes I finally decided to check the file details on root explorer beofre rebooting (duh). Turns out you just need to go to the market, download terminal emulator and write this there: chown root.root /system/framework/android.policy.odex (for odexed firmwares, check if the path is correct. Can't really recall)
That fixed it for me
if only the text can be removed, and we can add calendar reminders, all that good stuff.

[PARANOIDANDROID TABLET APPS] Apps with Different Tablet Mode UIs

I'm stepping out a bit here and starting a thread for apps with distinctly different Tablet Mode UIs for the Paranoid Android ROM. Bear with me, this is my first time doing anything like this, so please excuse any noob mistakes......I have to say that I'm not in any way affiliated with Team DIRT, the ROM, developers, etc, just starting this as a helpful guide for myself and (perhaps) others.
I'm hoping that people will be able to add to this with specifics on apps they use that have a different 'flavor' when in Tablet Mode, particular settings used to maximize functionality, etc. To that end, here's my initial list of what I've found:
1. Calendar- when in Tablet Mode, displays multiple calendars (e.g. Weekly, with Monthly in bottom left) and lets you pick which calendars are shown without having to go to Settings to do so. I've got it in Tablet Mode with a mid-to-low DPI.
2. Gmail- in Tablet Mode, has a column of mailboxes on the left, email headers on the right, and when you click an email it takes you to that one; you use the back button to go back one 'level'. I've got it in Tablet Mode with mid-DPI density.
3. Contacts- in Tablet Mode, has a column of people on the left, tapping one brings up their information on the right. Mid-DPI works for me, not too small; bigger settings make individual contacts unusable/unreadable in Tablet Mode.
4. Settings- very useful in Tablet Mode IMO. Column of Settings on the left, clicking on one brings up sub-settings on the right. Again, mid-DPI in Tablet Mode seems to be a nice medium, for me.
5. Google Play Music- Tablet Mode makes it a sort of permanent 'Album Cover' style, as if you were to turn your phone sideways in regular Phone Mode, but all the time.
6. Maps- has a different button layout in Tablet Mode.
This is just what I've found with the apps I have; I've seen other posts for other ROMs where they've found that Google Reader has a different look, for instance, but I haven't been able to recreate it. I hope you find this useful, and look forward to additions!

Been wondering about this myself...
I have a GNex and running PA...
Others I've found:
Netflix - phoneui is just a list. tabletui allows you to scroll through titles and is more like its ps3 or pc interface.
Camera as mentioned - is a forced landscape mode with different positioning for controls.
Browser - tabletui adds visible tabs. phoneui has less 'chrome'

[Q] some noob questions

Hello,
i'm new to Android and the Nexus 4 is my first Android device. I'm really happy with it but i've got some questions which i'm sure are pretty easy to answer for most people here:
- I turned off the vibration (touch feedback) in the settings, but in some apps it's still there, for example when i type in a URL in chrome. how do i disable it?
- I came from an iPhone and i'm used to having an app for notes. Is there any good, simple app for android, where you can just write down some notes, similar to the iphone app?
- I've heard of a great app to use in case you lose your phone or someone steals it, so you can track it down from your pc, take photos etc, but i forgot its name. Does anyone know?
- Is it normal that the Nexus 4 camera sometimes keeps trying to focus on something? it happened to me sometimes that it focused, the image got sharp, then suddenly it loses the focus again, focuses again, loses it again, and so on, even though i was not moving the phone (holding it in my hand though).
Thanks for your help!

Ok, I Don't Have A N4, But I Can Help. For The Type Vibration, You Might Have To Go Into The Keyboard Settings And Look For It There. I Think It's Set Apart From The Other Feedback Option.
I Use ColorNote & EverNote. ColorNote, As The Name Implies, Has All These Color Options You Can Use, And Separate Your Notes By Color. (Red for thoughts, green for to-do stuff, and so on) I Like EverNote Because It Automatically Saves Your Notes Online.
I Think You're Referring To The Lookout Mobile Security App. I Have It On Both Of My Phones.
Once Again, Not A Nexus Owner, So I Can't Help With Your Camera Issue. Sorry. :/
All The Apps Suggested Are Free. (Lookout has Premium features that you have to pay for, I think by the month)
I Hope I've Helped.

I have come from an iPhone too, although this is not my first Android. For the keyboard vibration, you have to turn it off on the keyboard's settings, as the guy above me said.
For the notes, I use this. It's a simple but great and useful application.

Another thing i don't fully understand:
On the top left of the screen (on the bar), i see Skype, which makes sense, since Skype is open in the background, so i won't miss a call or message or whatever. But then why is there no symbol for What's app or facebook? Don't they work the same? Basically, there also needs to be some kind of background process open for these, right? But why are they not shown on the top left of the bar?

While we're at it, another question
How do you actually CLOSE an app? So it's not in the RAM anymore. I'd imagine that all those apps still running in the background use a lot of battery, right?
Just use the third soft button at the button of the screen then close the apps from there. As for background processes, you need not to worry about then. Android is good at handling background processes so they don't take a lot of battery.

Isn't this just a list of "recently opened" apps? Because if you swipe them off there, these apps are still shown as "Active" in the settings menu.
Nope, you close them from there. Although some may have a background process like Facebook so you can still receive notifications with the app closed. It takes up minimal battery.

Original Google N1 Car Home APKs

I use my phone a lot in the car (GPS, music and phone calls), so I always keep the original apk's files from the Nexus One Car Home handy. The app is still listed in the Play Store, but it won't install in newer devices.
Just install both files as regular apps, reboot and you are set to go. I always liked this app for its simplicity. Enjoy!
Also, I will recommend getting some NFC tags and Trigger (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jwsoft.nfcactionlauncher), so you can launch the app automatically in your car. Trigger is a very easy to use, but if you want more control, get Tasker instead.
I really like the look of it too, but it kept reopening after I closed the app.
Try wiping Dalvik and cache, this happened to me one time and that fixed the problem.
I hope thus helps.

Like @b1g1an said, to get proper car dock mode (i.e. landscape on the home launcher) you gotta have root, that's why I made this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.warner.carmode
but this Nexus One app is a nice optional solution.

Ultimate Rotation Control doesn't need root to rotate the home screen so might be worth a look how they do it, you'll get a lot more takers of yours if you can lose the root reliance.

When I use car mode I get the notification in the status bar which is fine but it also flashes the notification light which is useless and hides whether I have any "real" notifications.
Didn't have this issue on other phones I used it on previously. Any ideas how I can stop the light flashing just for this app?

Slide Aside, Q Slide and q memo. Good work LG!

Hello guys! The first thing that positively surprised me the first time I used my gpad was the improvement given by LG software.
In particular Slide Aside(too freeze an app) Q Slide (kind of multi windows experience) and quick memo are very good. How can I the same feature on other devices (like my galaxy s4, where samsung software are only garbage).

Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk
I guess I'm not clear how using qslide is all that much different than holding home and switching tasks that way. I mean I guess qslide may prevent the garbage collector from killing an app before you are ready... but I've never seen that be an issue in any practical use since it doesn't clean up right away.

I'm sure there are decent apps out there, I was just impressed that LG would include something so useful that does require some technical knowledge. It requires you to \\<ip> and login with a provided username/pw.
