When I first got my s5 it seemed a bit sluggish. I tried all the tips and tricks to speed it up but it still seemed laggy. I backed up everything and did a factory reset and now it is lightning fast! Not sure why, but it may help others with a reset.

All I did was turn off all the bloatware apps I am not using, like Play Music,Play Books, S Voice, Flipbook, stupid T-Mobile Visual Voicemail, Amazon, etc. although mine has not been laggy at all even before that.

I rooted my S5 so you can strip it right back with some of the appz you can get -
If not rooted - go into appz locker and drag the program to the top - if its a user program you can uninstall it - if its a system app them disable will appear - this will take you to the app manager where you can uninstall updates - force close and disable that program - slide right when your there to see running and see if anything is hogging your phone
Hope this Helps
Bear
This happen to me most of the times (my s5 behaves much slower than as it is) and i do a factory data reset. It will become faster after it. The bloatware and apps we installed makes it slower and the cache and data used by the apps are making your memory and ram much slower than anything else. :crying:

just go into settings>application manager, select any of the apps you want to turn off, and select "turn off" . it will have a pop up or two, one about uninstalling updates, etc.....and then voila! app is turned off.

Without root and rom manager you can't uninstall rom apps.....
These apps are built in the rom so the only way is to disable them.

If you download Root Uninstaller from the market you can FREEZE apps instead of disabling them. Disabled apps still appear...frozen ones don't.

As I heard some third party appskiller app are unsafe to use. Because if you killed the wrong thing, your smartphone will get even more in battery drain. So i wonder if this disable thing is the same? Like disable things which shouldnt disable will cause more battery in draining.

I wasn't very impressed with the Note 3's battery life at first, then I went into Settings>Application Manager and disabled a whole bunch of bloatware. Also went into each app and turned off any background update and location service if we don't need it. You can do this without root. Just take a look on this board and you'll see someone has compiled a list of apps that you can disable.
The phone now runs cooler, and yesterday, we had 14h usage and 6.5 hours display on time (auto brightness). Very impressive in my book.

Turn off all the Samsung features when you're not using them like Smart Stay and Air Gesture. The sensors are always on in certain apps when you have them enabled. Turning them on and off is easily accessible via the notification toggles. But it will only slightly help, your phone should be performing better than that even with those features running. Try a factory reset if it is safe to do with the root method.

yup. was recommended that app on the s4, great app
Download the app Wakelock Detector from the Play Store.
Open it for the first time right after you unplug your phone
After some deep sleep occurs for awhile, open Wakelock Detector and select the icon in the top right to select "Wakeup Triggers"
This will show you which app waked the device when it was trying to sleep(=screen off) and how many times it waked it. Figuring out Google wakelocks will probably help you the most unless you have some poorly written or rogue app
A good start would be to remove ALL google apps that you don't use, and turn off google ads as well as notifications and scheduled checks within say...Play Store and Youtube and Gmail

I essentially hibernate everything except system apps and widgets, just to be safe. You would also not hibernate apps that you want background notifications from. I also use the donate version, which allows me take advantage of GCM. Which, for apps that use GCM, allows me to hibernate those apps and still receive notifications.
Hope that helps =]

I a bit disappoint with the lag when unlocking from active notificaction.
following this forum https://forums.motorola.com/posts/d5a9438952?page=5 I have found a trick that may fix the lag or at least be less periodicall.
You need to uninstall all the updates for hangout and dont use it as your sms app. At least for me lag occurs to me less often as before. Then set your unlock securty to none, wake your phone from Active Notificacions, and finally restore your security.
I just notice that before getting into home, sometimes it goes to the normal unlock screen.
EDIT: you need to do a full wipe instalation using RSD lite and then when prompt for to restore from your google account DO NOT restore. doing that way I did not have any more lag even using GEL.

Guys I think there is an issue when installed from OTA or installed the full package. You need to perform a full factory reset, I did installed with RSD lite, then do not restore from your google account. Then the lag is not there, I had been testing during a full day.

You are right but there is a consideration, yo need to do not restore anything from your account, just log in. if you restore configs the problem persists.
Non root I use helium back up, with root I use titanium.
I have wiped and restored my phones probably in excess of a thousand times in the last few years. System data I never restored, only restored app data from apps that don't already sync and are sensitive/business orientated apps... So basically, of the 150-200 apps I have at any given time, I probably only restore data for 1-2 dozen. This method has never failed me.
I never use the Google account back up... It's garbage... In fact, it's the first thing I disable on setup and the first thing I freeze when I obtain root

I've been a paid Swype user for years now, haven't found another keyboard that suits me as well, to be honest. I tried SwiftKey, etc. and didn't care for them.
Chrooma keyboard. Dope. Nuff said. Fleksy is cool too once you get used to it and the way you input keys..its quite different. but I like swiping for words sometimes and fleksy doesn't support that. Chrooma has been my favorite since I can't flash AOSP keyboard with number row.

I have solved the problem on my device
Hi
I had the same problem.
If you can have access to a terminal in your device, you can see the running processes with ps command.
I use it to see what processes where running when I saw that screen appear once again, what I could see at the output from the command line was that two of the running process where related to a wallpapers app (KittyPlay wallpapers) and had some estrange references to the following namespaces:
com.jiubang.commerce.service.IntelligentPreloadService
com.jiubang.commerce.chargelock
The first thing that come to my mind was the obvious relation of "chargelock" with the kind of screen lock that was appearing on my device and the fact that a few days ago I have installed f-droid and this application offered to update the KittyPlay application, so I updated thinking that there was no problem with the updated app. After the update I started to see the speedcharge lock screen.
The only way for me to know what was causing the problem was to use the command line and trying to identify the processes involved.
I uninstalled the mentioned application (KittyPlay) and the speedcharge lock screen stopped from appearing.
Hope this can be helpful to solve the problem for you.
I've had the same problem for awhile now. Turns out it was GO Weather. I'd used it for years without any real problems but this is it. I just uninstalled, rebooted and the speedcharge lockscreen is gone.
It is also in GO power master but all I did was go to settings and unclick Boost Charge. There is also an option to unclick launch GO power master when charging.
I found it in zcamera.
ES file Explorer has been bundled with the speed charger addware as well.
