Hi! So sfter the 4.4 update, i've began experiencing the purple smearing. I didn't had that on 4.3. But now i've observed something else, when i reduce the brightness to the lowest level the screen begins to show a green hue/tint which is noticeable especially in vidoes. So what should i do guys? Wait for an update from samsung, root and go back to 4.3 or take it to a service center?

Do Nothing.
Every S4 has this issue.
If you want a perfect screen then definitely don't buy a Samsung with AMOLED

Hello friends,
I have my S4 yesterday and the Settings app looks weird when I scroll.
The text is getting purple and the bars are also purple when scrolling.
Is my s4 a destroyed phone or is it normal behaviour to I9505?
Thanks in advances.

Yes it is the issue I have. I read that Samsung is said to fix it in next update so thanks.
I am using my s4 from past 20 days but today i noticed whenever i open keyboard to type something a slight green tint occurs on the display it is very visible while using the phone in dark environment with zero brightness and with higher brightness levels its not that clear but still it is there ... i got rid of smearing issue courtesy screen adjuster app but this issue is bothering me .... anyone else having the same issue plz let me know.

Haven't noticed this on my I9505, try using another keyboard

I'm having this issue and it's doing my head in!
Every time I bring up the on screen keyboard the hue changes slightly to greeny tone. Then back again when keyboard goes.
I'm surprised not more people mention it.
The easiest way I found to see it was ten brightness right down, go to a dark room and open play store. Touch on the search bar to bring up recent searches and keyboard, then hit the back button, then touch touch bar again, then the back button. Keep doing this so your toggling keyboard on and off and watch the whole screen shift tone.
I'd love to know if it's an issue across the board or if only a few phones are affected.

I am facing the exact issue bro but i hope it will be a software related issue but i am also worried that may be we have defective handsets because very few people raised voice against this issue so it means that most users are not suffering from this issue.

Is this for the stock keyboard? I'm using SwiftKey though.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda premium
I tried with other keyboard and its still there
Sent from my GT-I9500 using xda app-developers app
It's got nothing to do with the keyboard.
If you watch a movie on you tube (black and white is best) put to full screen and wait for slider to dissappear, then tap screen to bring it back. The hue changes to green!
It's whenever the screen has to bring something up like a keyboard, menu, slider etc.
Come on guys please can you test this so we know it's a problem on all handsets like smearing or if it's a hardware fault in a few handsets.

What auto tinting option ?? Where is it ??
Sent from my GT-I9500 using xda app-developers app
Lol there is no 'auto tinting' option. If you mean adjust screen tone, it makes no difference.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using XDA Premium HD app
This happens on kernels based on MDN below,
anything above MDM the tint issue is fixed.
On ME2 firmware and I experience the same issue. It feels kinda like a 'flicker'.
I have same keyboard tint problem too and its bugging me. Is it a sw or hw issue? Can it be fixed?

mostly all people have this problem & I was worried too about this. But update your phone. you should get a new update notification by now.! I already updated and it fixes this problem. and the smearing issue as well. And then you can also move your apps to sd!!!!!:victory:
Hi, just got my replacement after having some overheating problems and noticed this problem on the new one. I'm pretty sure is the screen, and not a software problem. Mine looks yellowish/greenish on the bottom. I downloaded Screen Test app and notice the problem. I have some pics showing the color differences along the screen. I'll go for another replacement tomorrow.
Renowned xda member bala gamer said that after installing MEA update this green tint issue is gone

Anybody got this? In low brightness some darker elements(specially gray) start become a little purplish
Also the colors seem less saturated in the default screen mode than the s3(also in standard) i thought i would be the opposite, is my screen defective or is this normal
I tried google but all i get are galaxy nexus results(purple tint)

Welcome to S4. Every galaxy S4 has this. Please refer to other threads on how to get rid of this smearing through software.
Sent from my GT-I9500 using xda premium
The OP doesn't mention smearing.
This is a different issue to the smearing problem.
When the brightness is on low greys become purple. I have had 4 different S4s (all had to be replaced due to screen issues) and every single one had this problem on low brightness.
IMO there is no such thing as a perfect S4 screen!
I have finally settled on my 4th replacement and this one is still not great but I'm sick of returning them.
I have a pink tint at the top of this screen and also all the sensors, LED and front camera are misaligned in the casing, All over to the left.
Samsung have REALLY failed on the Quality Control of this device.
So it seems universal, well i will have to turn off auto brightness and use brightness at 30%
Any of u guys came from the s3? Do the s4 colors seem a little less saturated to u guys? I have them both side by side and it seems so

Yes. I had s3 before and the less saturation on S4 is intentional by Samsung. According to some detailed comparison, the colors of s4 are more accurate. It seems odd at first because our eyes are used to the oversatured screen of s3.

Thinking of buying the Note 3 but really wanna know how bad the smearing issue is cause i bought the Galaxy s4 on launch day and couldn't live with the smearing issue ( my girlfriend also bought a Galaxy s4 on launch day and still has it..she didn't think the smearing was annoying..i hated it )
Could someone with a Note 3 try both things explained below on low brightness
1. Download zedge and search for black wallpapers..then while scrolling thru the wallpapers..do you so smearing..purple glow on the grey background in zedge between the wallpapers?
2. Choose a black wallpaper as background and install nova launcher...then on the homescreen set a widget with some grey in it like the stock music player widget and scroll between the homescreens...and also with some icons on the homescreens?
On the Galaxy s4 doing the above there was a lot of smearing..purple glow visible even after the fix from samsung cause they only fixt it in the samsung framework

I tested Zedge.. Yes there is smearing.
But when you uncheck Auto Brightness Smearing is much much better.
Auto Mode is very dark. In a dark room it gets darker again..I recommend manual Brightness 30 - 50%. Then its really fine.

The purple smearing effect is probably just because the greys blur when moving and they appear purple. Entirely normal and probably same on all phones.

Jep. Black = Pixels are off
When you Scroll the Pixels need Time to activate. Thats the Price for real Black

^^ Ditto, I don't find it annoying, I didn't even know about it until the OP mentioned it.
Ive seen it in Tapatalk 2 with blue dark theme..
Black background and gray Text..The complete Text smeared..
Now i use the classic dark theme (dark grey background) and all is fine
Dont think about Smearing.. i think you will just see it in darker rooms.
Thanks a lot guys...you saved me 750 bucks, some people don't find it that big of a issue like my girlfriend who still has the Galaxy s4...for me it is an issue cause i like to have a black background and while using a black background with nova launcher..on my Galaxy s4 the smearing issue was visible on the icons switching thru the homescreens..don't want that on my next phone

Had the Note 2 and there the smearing was not present cause while displaying black the lights where still active. Bought the Galaxy s4 on launch day and that was the first time i had the smearing issue cause when displaying black the amoled screen is really off so when switching to another color like grey the lights need to become active witch creates the smearing. Sold the Galaxy s4 and bought the htc One that has no smearing but wanted a larger screen so bought a Note 2 again witch has no smearing issues cause the screen doesn't turn of like the Galaxy s4 when displaying black and hoped the Note 3 wouldn't have it but seems it does unfortunatly

OR you could've installed one simple app that would've fixed your smearing issue on your S4. Your blacks will not turn off completely and will remove smearing 100%.

It's always there, no matter what ROM and it always will be. It's a hardware thing, not software. Samsung just covered it up in certain places on the 4.3 ROM, but it was always there in 3rd party apps and movies etc.
You just have to put up with it unfortunately.
But i've seen that not all people with s4 have this problem, so i wonder if it's a software problem after all?
