*** True Story ***
I am a member on Dell's community forum and have watched Dell's mouthpiece, Amy-B, post the lies and put up the smoke and mirrors regarding this for a while now. When she first announced that the update would begin on 11/15, I paid closer attention. By the end of the week when there was no update, I commented that users may have a potential class action suit. With that, I got a scathing email from Dell saying I violated their terms of use, some left handed subtle threats, and my post was deleted. I still laugh about that.
End True Story, my ongoing review below
I put 2.2 on last night and played with it for a little while before bed, then really started putting it to the test today. here's what's happened until now.
First, when I applied the update, it kept a lot of previous settings and applications rather than clean wiping. It also bypassed forcing me to login to google account, so when I tried to use the market, it couldn't. With that, I used my credentials to login to my google account and immediately started having some google calendar syncing error. It became a loop, each time asking me to report it, then asking me to force close the app, and then over and over the same thing. So I rebooted the streak, and it came up with the same exact issue not allowing me to do anything with it. I had to pull the battery to shut it down this time and when I get it all together to power up, I simply held the up/down volume keys and told it to do a factory reset.
The rom cooks itself into the streak as the factory install and 2.2 came up on the next boot, this time asking for google credentials. It worked that time, and I was ready to put the phone through it's motions.
Issues I've found
1. Voice Dialer via Bluetooth crashes each time I try to use it. It crashes to the point that it tells me to restart my phone. This is without fail.
2. swiping to unlock the phone, or pattern unlock are flaky. it will start then stop as if I've taken my finger off. I have to do it multiple times and crazy ways to make it work. Pattern lock same thing. Especially after coming out of my pocket... as if the heat from my body makes my finger not be recognized on the whole screen. This build makes the touchscreen no longer responsive as it was in 1.6... update, I've tested this over and over and over. yes, it seems to be the temperature, because if I blow on the screen to cool it, or something similar, the screen becomes instantly responsive to my touch. I never had this problem with 1.6 regardless of when I pulled it out of my pocket.
3. sometimes, changing screens gets choppy or laggy.
4. No widget bar or tray/drawer that allows you to turn BT or Wifi on or off. You have to get something from the market to do this (updated, this is available as a widget, I should open my eyes a bit)
5. Can't change the number of screens; can't add or subtract screens, stages, rooms, or whatever you choose to call it. You're stuck with 7, the center one being the default.
6. Multiple FC's for variety of reasons, many are while simply browsing the market. With that Microsoft-esque error reporting thing always popping up, I think they anticipated feeding garbage to the masses.
7. Have tried a few alternate launchers. Some are better than others, more functional etc.. .but no matter how weak an alternate launcher appears to be, they pretty much ALL beat StageUI

1. Have always liked the live wallpapers that we were introduced to in 2.1
2. landscape mode rights itself regardless of which side is facing up. could be a caveat since it puts the home/back/menu buttons upside down on the left instead of right with the hard buttons on the bottom, but still kind of cool nonetheless.
4. Support for Exchange is native and doesn't require additional software/applications.
the long and the short of it.. Dell is useless as an OS developer/tweaker and StageUI blows.
Samsung hit the homerun with it on its Galaxy S series. I was just at best buy, and the Galaxy Tab is pretty sweet but the price tag is ridiculous. Comparing 2.1 of my Vibrant with 2.2 on my streak, the Vibrant wins. no contest.
Day one of having the new 2.2 update on there and it's clear that this OS needs some patching already. I can only imagine what the people on O2 in the UK had to go through with their 2.1 fiasco

Here's a couple of things that I like in this build but before I list the items I wanted to address the comment you made about being able to turn of BT, wi-fi, GPS, brightness, etc. Under apps you can select Power Control and that will give you those options in a form of a widget. You do, however, will have to delete one of the Stage widgets to free up the room. Or you can just open the widget via apps. For my use, I currently prefer a different launcher than Stage. I am using the LauncherPro but there are a lot of other free choices like ADW, Zeam and so on.
Here are the things I like about this build:
1. Ability to hang up the call by pressing the power button ( you have to go to Settings-Accessibility-then check the mark for that option)
2. Radio feature - is absolutely great. The thing I don't like is the web ad that seems to pop every time I start listening to a station. If anyone knows how to turn/block that pop-up you would make me very happy )
3. Keyboard is awesome. Love the size, the options to switch to symbols, just love it. Haven't messed with SWYPE but I love the Andriod KB right now.
4. Flash - yes it works and it works well.
5. Speed - significantly faster. Whether navigating or downloading. Wi-fi speeds are faster than 1.6 or 2.1 I use to have.
6. Bluetooth volume is louder. This one was high on my priority list.
7. Music widget - looks nice and clean.
8. Camera works fine. I don't see an option for 720p though.
9. Security is beefed up by adding the option for PIN or password on top of the normal sliding lock. My slider works without any issues. But I prefer the pattern lock which also works great.
10. Haptic feedback can't be completely turned off, or you can turn off certain features alone like keyboard. I have mine off so the three main buttons don't vibrate any more. I don't think that option was available in the previous builds but I could be wrong.
These are the ones that I can think of right off the bat. I may add more as I remember them.

So my quick review:
The good:
Loving the out-of-the-box Exchange support. Yay. Mobile e-mail/calendar/contacts without having to use Touchdown and the hassle of 'pushing' Touchdown contacts to the phone's contacts.
w00t. Ability to grab requiring apps from the market which require 2.x.
2.x features like portrait home screen, better multi-touch, etc.
The bad:
The Stage UI is just lame. Giving it a few days before I toss it in the bin.
I miss the old video playing app. I dunno what it was called, but there isn't even a shortcut for the new one. I installed ASTRO File Manager, browsed to my video directory and the file launched with some less-than-basic video player. What I liked about the old one was the order-by-date view which I have become used to but isn't the end of the world, the resume where you left off feature, and the delete from within the app feature. I guess Rock Player is the video player most people seem to be recommending, so I hope it has this.
For all its faults, I liked the old keyboard. I suspect it's still there, but I have yet to look. Using 2 (To/two/too) and 4 (For/four), etc in txt/IM/tweets now takes extra keypresses.
I never really knew how handy the Dell notification area was for 1.6. I'd turn off the cellular data and run Wi-Fi only, with just a couple of presses and it wouldn't interrupt the app I was in. Now I have to go to the home screen, press the menu button, and that's only to turn off wireless. I have yet to find the equivalent enable/disable for 3G.
Yet to check:
I've found the Streak's camera has taken pretty lame photos. I'm not photophile, but our 5 year old, 4MP camera takes better photos than the Streak. I've had the Streak set to the best quality (Lowest compression or whatever it was) and if you zoom in on a picture while viewing on a PC, it gets pixelated very quickly, while our 4MP pics are much nicer looking and they are twice the file size (4MP pic twice the file size of a 5MP pic?), so I'm interpreted this as 'The Streak takes crappy pics'. Been waiting to see what, if anything, the upgrade to 2.2 does for this.
So I guess it seems to lack polish, BUT, I think the reason for this is because it's actually near-to-bare Android, so I'm not going to criticise the roughness when the other option is more polish (Which one may or may not like) from Dell that means OS updates take 6+ months. I'm sure I'll be able to overcome anything I'm not liking with apps or through tweaking some options somewhere. Isn't this why we have Android?
But yeah. Stage is coming off pretty quick I suspect.

This build was far too laggy for my tastes. 1.6 was faster on some of the processes for me. I'm happily back on DJ Steve's build which is soooo much faster and has virtually the same features.

...I dunno if iOS does, but my old Windows Mobile device did. I'd like a different sounds for these events, as I'll respond to them differently. Now I don't know if it's a calendar reminder which I can't ignore, a text which I might ignore or an e-mail that I can ignore...

I got fooled by this. check 'Custom' for 720p. I can verify it is 720p too. pretty good quality.

Try "Quick Settings" which puts an icon in your status bar so when in an app, just drag down the status bar click on it and all your settings are there. Or, try "QuickDesk". Not sure if this is out of beta yet but its also an awesome app for doing exactly what you are talking about.....and much more.
Cant wait to get my Streak and to start rockin this 2.2. Would love to have vanilla 2.2 though.

- can flashled from camera be used as torchlight ?
- it should have usb tethering now, but does it also do wifi-tethering ?

Yes the led can work as a flashlight. I used the N1 Torch app and it worked fine.
Yes it does have wifi tethering.
I really miss the 1.6 menu bar/notification bar. Stage blows compared to the old ui. The swype keyboard is great. I have mixed feelings about the update mainly because of the ui changes.

2. Yes, there´s an option for this and I checked it, and it seems to work. But I haven´t connected a device yet.

Alright. Others have answered, but I'll pass on what I know. If you're talking Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) not talking to an Exchange server, a la Hotmail, I'm getting a "cannot connect to server" error... My EAS to work's Exchange is working flawlessly though.
And USB/Wi-fi tethering are working grand. I'm tethered by Wi-fi as I write this, so I can pass my 3G USB modem on to a colleague. w00t.
I am a little concerned about battery life. I haven't done that much with the phone today, unlike a normal day where I might squeeze in a few calls, texts, tweets, bit of web browsing, and three+ hours of video and have the battery at 20% at the end of the day. I'm at 20% left now, and I haven't done any of those things.

You can create a shortcut to the wifi & networks popup from launcherpro activities.
1. Long press on the desktop bsckground
2. Select shortcut
3. Select Activities
4. Select wireless & networks
You now have access to the old dell popup to disable data, 3g etc.

Kinda. You still have to go from the app you're in out to the home screen, turn it on/off, and then go back to your app. But thanks for the info.
Keyboard feedback...
I noticed today that I was going a little crazy with my phone with the gingerbread keyboard and upbruptly the feedback sort of died. It was like that until I restarted the phone. I remember on my vibrant that you could adjust the vibration intensity and I would set it lower but haven't seen such a setting on this phone. Has anyone else experienced their feedback dying on them? I was actually scared that i might have broken it but it came back normal after restarting. A bug maybe?

[Q] Keyboard Issues
Has anyone been noticing any issues with the keyboard on the Nexus S? At times I cannot type anything onto the screen or a the "Force Close" dialog box will appear.
Yeah.. I had this problem the other day. I posted a thread about it and didn't get any replies.. lol. It happened to me when I tried to use the voice action for the first time on the keyboard.

Ditto. This is one of the most disappointing things. It's a shame Google's stock Android keyboard doesn't offer any deep features for custom text and custom auto texts like Smart Keyboard Pro does. They have an opportunity to really deviate and advance from the iPhone's keyboard, but Google seems content in just copying Apple in respect to the keyboard functions and lack thereof of more features, which I don't understand.
Unfortunately, even Smart Keyboard Pro has hiccups and miss-presses (especially with the space bar; you often get words likethis. Very frustrating).
Hopefully the keyboard will get better with future updates. Gingerbread, in general, is chalk full of hiccups. It is not lag free as most reviews claim.
I have the same issue. It doesn't happen all of the time but when it does it is annoying. It's weird because letters around the one I am trying to push work sometimes.
I just have to delete the letter before it and keep trying to enter it again
I didn't have any problems with the Gingerbread keyboard when I installed the APK on my Vibrant. Weird.

I was just thinking that. The length doesn't bother me so much, but I feel like I have to shove my finger into the very bottom of the screen to hit space. I've taken to just using the word suggestion bar to auto-space instead.
But to address the OP, no, haven't noticed any issues with responsiveness yet.

This is why I don't really like most android keyboards, the space bar is wayy too small. I've been alternative between the "iPhone Keyboard Emulator" and Swype.
I can type on an iphone (or even an ipod) more confidently than I can on any Android device. The Android keyboard on Gingerbread is without question improved over previous iterations, but still a far cry from the accuracy and responsiveness of iphones/ipods. It's also unfortunate Google doesn't take their keyboard past Apple's in terms of customization and ability to add auto correct and other features. For example, I don't understand why we still can't long press to get every alternative symbol.
I like the Gingerbread keyboard fine, space bar aside. I liked Swype better, but unless I'm mistaken, that can't be downloaded from the Market. Not willing to pay to try SlideIT, now that we're down to fifteen-minute trials.
I have been nothing but in love with the stock keyboard

SKP is amazing. The customization and features are robust and fantastic. However, don't you find it often misses space bar presses on the NS? Very often you'll get words likethis. It's so bad I reverted back to using stock Android keyboard.
When is Google going to implement Blindtype, which they recently bought back in October? I'm excited for the potential of this, because as is, the Android keyboard is poor when typing fast - it's error prone, it misses keys (particularly the space bar), the auto-correct is not as smart as it claims it is, there's virtually no customization (a cue unwisely taken from Apple), it sometimes doubles up on letters like sso, and etc.
I'm not attempting to start any immature wars, as I know this can happen anytime someone mentions the iPhone, but has anyone here actually typed on an iPhone, or even an iPod? If there's one thing that the iPhone commands respect in, its the keyboard. If you get a chance, try it sometime. The responsiveness is perfect. I truly wish I can say the same about Android's keyboard. Those who have tried both will understand the difference.

Maybe it's because of how I type, but I don't think my old iPod had much on my new Nexus S in terms of its keyboard. It could just be because Android has had the benefit of a year of improvements since my iPod was functional, though.

Anyone notice when trying to type "I'm" (letter i then m) really fast, it often spells out "km" instead? And even when you clearly hit the letter i, as you're moving toward the letter m, it hits the k inadvertently, and results in "km"? Anyone else? It's quite frustrating.
Not sure if this has been mentioned (I didn't read through every response), but the first NS I got seemed to have a grounding issue with its screen, making a portion of the keyboard unusable at times. Holding it differently or using my other hand to press the keys would work.
I was able to confirm that it was an issue with the screen rather than the keyboard by using one of the Multitouch test apps and setting the new Nexus Live Wallpaper as my background to test those portions of the screen when it was acting up.
Best Buy gave me no trouble exchanging it (just a long line).
On my second Nexus S I have noticed what seems to be a similar issue. My troubled area seems to be the L M key region. Ill give it a few more days to make sure it's not just me and if need be I'll exchange it.

cant rearrange tabs in chrome (the second you do, it splits off and create a new window, that cant be merged back with the original window)
never tells you how to exit a metro UI app. found out that you mouse over the bottom left corner.
all metro ui apps never seem to close for me, they are just forced into a "suspended" state. (I've been closing them through task manager)
apps dont even suspend for me. How do you suspend them? they just kept running and annoying the hell out of me -.-
They stay in the alt-tab switcher, but in reality they're just cached in memory. They don't use any CPU when suspended.
If you have touch, swiping from the right brings up the charms, which allow you to go back to the start screen, among other things. If you don't, bringing the mouse to the bottom-left corner of the screen does the same thing. Hitting the windows key on the keyboard will also bring up the start screen. What I really hate is hitting Settings on that little popup menu, and having to go all the way to the right to connect to a wifi network.
The only program I've had issues with so far is Firefox. I had to disable hardware acceleration because it kept rendering badly and freezing the system. I installed Office and Quicken, and they've been working great so far. I'm gonna be using this instead of Windows 7 for a while.

Sleep\Hibernation Problem
Windows 8 seems to have some problems with coming out of sleep and hibernation, has anyone else noticed this yet? a hard shut down is often required to become operational again.(I did install over Windows 7 to preserve User data.)

I find that an easy exit from metro and such to be the windows key. Some problems I found is that my mouse track pad on my laptop doesn't scroll along the side anymore, which is starting to get bothersome. And closing apps is awkward.
I'm annoyed by the fact that the metro ie and the desktop ie are two different things. They act as two different programs - probably because they are. Aparently the metro version will be plug in free - no flash - wtf? It kind of ruins the point of running a desktop os on a mobile device when you have to switch to the non finger friendly ui in order to get full functionality. You fail microsoft. Hopefully Mozilla will release a metro-fied version of firefox. I hate ie anyways.
I'm trying to make this more finger friendly. I've got it running very nicely on my aspire 5610 hybrid franken notebook (the motherboard came from a european version with a geforce 7600) I installed the synaptics multi touch track pad drivers but it's a bit sluggish using gestures. Two finger scroll is slow and imprecise and three finger swipe is hit and miss but it is better than nothing. I want to reach out and touch this os. Anyone know of a good way to add multi touch to a notebook? I've been hunting for a 15.4in capacitive overlay to tuck in the screen bezel but can't find one. Other than that all I see are camera based solutions that seem a little iffy...

I just mentioned this in another post, thought I would re-post for convenience.
alt+f4 closes metro apps and will shutdown windows. Just like it has in previous versions of windows. When you close apps you will need to window key back to the start screen but the apps wont be cached or suspended.
I have to disagree with the above, Alt+F4 does NOT close Metro apps. (at least not for me.)
Metro is most definitely a separate application, since Win+D forced it away and gave me the desktop I know and love. Since Xbox Live is coming I would guess eventually the Start screen is going to see some form of Kinect integration... (which is sad because I don't really like Kinect for more than perhaps pausing/resuming Netflix)
And as for problems, anyone tried to access a folder you have to give permission for first? I end up hanging Explorer because I can't click "Continue" on that dumb permission folder. And with the "new" control panel I can't find where to turn UAC off.

Is there any way to CLOSE Metro apps without using the task manager? The only way I can get out of things is using the Windows key on my keyboard it seems. Its such a simple question...one I haven't found an answer to yet.

Yeah, it seems like thats the only way out right now. Also, does anyone know how to stop Metro IE10 from having that "Only secure content is shown" pop-up at almost every website?
Interestingly I managed to get the "classic" bootloader back by exiting the Windows 8 one in the more option screen. Which I guess is actually a bad thing because it went and put Win8 back as the default selection =/
And at the keynote, the Windows key is how the speaker got out of Metro apps on the demo units without a touchscreen. (I just streamed it, and just the first day's one at that)

Do the apps in the start menu actually work or are they here just to make the start menu look nice?
The only links that actually work are, desktop, file explorer, chrome (that I installed), control panel, and internet explore.
edit: well after searching other forums i solved my problem
the metro apps will only work if you have a resolution of 1024x768 or higher
a simple reg edit fixed this
1) Run regedit
1a) highlight the higest tree level (Computer)
2) Search for “Display1_DownScalingSupported” and changed it from “0″ to “1″
3) Restart the system
4) Enjoy the two new resolutions: 1024×768 px and 1152×864 px

Can't get the install past 90%
Loading to my netbook how long did the install take for yall

1.66ghz, 2gb ram
used a flash drive
I have one ram but 1.66 ghz
Did your install hang at 90? Did you install over w7 or did fresh install?

I installed win8 from a flash drive on to a separate partition. It never hanged for me but I have 2 gb of ram... I also installed the 64bit b/c i was getting a driver error for a dvd/cd drive when i don't even have one.
1gb is the min for 32bit and 2gb for 64bit.

If ur apps wont open try this, most likely your resolution is to low.

Got it running on my Acer Iconia Tab w500, which I may be right in saying is the only Windows tablet you can buy with a multitouch capacitive screen? Either way this thing is MADE for Windows 8, I just have a couple of hardware issues that I don't foresee being able to resolve on my own, but I'm not sure where to post about it. The biggest thing is getting the accelerometer back.....
Overall for a developer preview, its a great experience, it just needs a bit more refinement and some smart people do develop more Metro apps! I don't have the internal storage to dual boot so I'm all-in.
yea my accelerometer doesn't work either.

No No No that's not the way.Just put your mouse to the top of the app and drag it down.It will close.No need for alt and f4 at all!

Are you doing an upgrade or a clean install.If youre trying to upgrade,try a clean install.It will work:laugh:

Y U No Use RTM?
Alt+F4 (which works correctly in RTM) is much faster for people who are used to using keyboard shortcuts, although the "drag from top to bottom" gesture works fine with a mouse and is very easy with touch (less so with stylus, though still possible). That said, closing TIFKAM apps is rarely needed; when in the background most apps are suspended and use no CPU or battery life. I believe they will be closed automatically if another app needs the RAM, although I'm less sure of that. Incidentally, you can also close them using the mouse by going to any other screen (Start, Desktop, another TIFKAM app), then mouse to the upper left corner (shows the switcher), right-click on an app thumbnail, select Close.
1. To disable the what-the-hell-double-tab-for-zoom in any browser. (Or system-wide) Why do we have multi-touch? Only to zoom beauties on pictures with two fingers?
2. To be able to disable finger input at all on wacom devices if s-pen is in use. Auto-enable it on every off-on switch if I lost my s-pen and want to use my tablet further on.
3. To disable popping up software keyboard if usb or bt keyboard is in use.
4. Be able to adjust brightness even in low-battery mode.
5. Want to have a last warning or a countdown-timer one minute before shutdown on low-battery.
6. To open the kernel for custom usb-otg while power hackz. I build a cable with charge-or-not switch and external power support for otg devices. But can't use them both.
7. To disable the "Delete unrecognized storage" at all and ever in notifications. Because of one mis-tab and no last asking, I had to repair my partition-table (usb hdd w/ ntfs and ext4). -.-
8. Be able to select text by pressed shift key, like a normal computer since decades. (Shift and touch-finger-move would be fast and easy.)
9. Make any keyboard-command (hackerkeyboard or usb/bt keyboard) usable. Like ctrl-c or the arrow-keys. Everywhere.
So far a good app for the note 10.1 is the s-penboardswitcher app. Two keyboards for touch or s-pen-mode.
And most roms with their special enhancements. Thanks for that!
Maybe you have some more optimization-ideas too. Maybe you like (+1) one of these points. Maybe enough ppl to make a most-wanted-usability-optimizations highscore.)
Maybe some helpful user can give me a hint for a solution of one of these points. And probably these ideas (if aren't in use) should be under the GPL.

agreed. On disabling, all finger inputs on the entire device. Is there a software issue that's causing them not to be able to do this? I don't get it, for a company that is supposedly "innovative", did they complete forget what happens when people write. Have they not simulated how people drag their hands across a material when writing. It's so damn annoying.
Well, if your device is rooted you can use external keyboard helper (paid) to disable the software keyboard
