No operating system installed

I tried to install a new rom after updating TWRP 2.3.0.0. after all was complete it stuck on the boot screen. I then tried with the Nexus Root Toolkit to use a restore from backup. Same problem. I then tried to flash stock and unroot. Same problem. I then tried a number of things through TWRP from backups I had their. Same problem. At present I have no OS and I can only boot into TWRP, turn if off or look at the GOOGLE screen. I have run out of ideas and would appreciate any help offered.

If you have tried everything else (flashing a ROM zip etc.) Then you should flash the factory image from Google.
Don't use the script/batch file as that will wipe your internal storage.
Just flash system and boot.

Sometimes a rom takes a long time to boot for the first time, please be very patient. Also, try wiping everything from /system, and then re install a custom rom from your /sdcard partition. also make sure your roms are for the nexus 7 not galaxy nexus or other similar devices. ONE MORE THING 4.1.2 wont flash with 4.1.1 bootloader.

There was a bug in TWRP V2.3.0.0 use fastboot to flash V2.3.1.0 and then reflash the rom

How did you fix it? I have no OS and my internal SD card was erased too I don't know how to flash from fastboot

I know many people hate the talk about toolkits but I was in the same situation and I used Wug's toolkit and it saved me. I downloaded 4.1.2 image directly from Google, as the toolkit only has 4.1.1.
I tried to return to stock on my own and it just went from bad to worse. I would of spent more time trying to fix it on my own but I was on a very tight time constraint. It will unroot your device but it is easy to root again.

[HELP] Accidentally formated SDCARD!

So I rooted, then put CM10.1 nightly and gapps on my sdcard, then went to flash, and I spaced out and accidentally formatted SDCARD when i know that I shouldnt have. crap.
i tried using the "sideload" feature but it wouldnt work on my adb-mac version, i also tried adb pushing ROM files to SDCARD, it says transfered but when i go to flash it says no files in SDCARD, I also tried pushing to SDCARD/0 but i get an error that it isnt a directory since it is formatted.
SOME ONE PLEASE give me instructions on what to do. Do I have to go back to stock or can I just get this to go straight to CM10.1? Id prefer straight to CM10.1 obviously.

Push cwm via fastboot then reflash the rom

Hindsight 20/20, but it never hurts to do an adb backup, it will b/u your sdcard as well.

did this, but still same error, no files found in sd card. i did not think this would solve it but i tried anyway...

So you've successfully flashed a recovery img via fasboot? Did you also push a copy of the ROM zip back to your phone?
Boot to recovery and then adb push the ROM to the sd card.
Code:
adb push yourROMsName.zip /sdcard/
The above code assumes you've placed the rom zip in the adb or platform-tools folder on your PC.

Can't you just boot into fastboot, flash a recovery, boot into said recovery and mount the internal storage and drag and drop the files from your computer?
How did you format the SD card when the phone doesn't have one?

The internal storage is considered an SD card.

yes i did repush the rom file. this isnt working because i dont believe that flashing a recovery adds folder/partition information to the sdcard. maybe im wrong, but it didnt work.

I am currently using Wug's Nexus Toolkit to try to flash stock from softbrick mode...will let you know how it goes
EDIT:: This is giving me some trouble as I cant turn on USB DEBUGGING (because i have no OS installed) to install the drivers and such.....
PLEASE KEEP IDEAS ROLLIN...

You could also try wugfresh's toolkit and selecting "Back to Stock" -> "Soft-bricked".

You should learn how to do this without tool kits. Those things while helpful are nothing more than a crutch

Yeah but doesn't the Nexus 4 lump all the internal storage together, I know other devices like the OXL have like 6GB internal storage and then a 'simulated' mSD card of about 10GB, making 16GB total. But the Nexus 4 uses the whole 16GB (or 8GB) as internal storage.

although ive always wanted to try one, and it worked! if this were to happen again (if i dont shoot myself) then i will be doing it manually.
Thanks so much to everyone for all the help! I am now running Official CM10.1 Nightly (newest) and running beautifully so far. This is my second N4 tho, so I will be using my 1st stock one for today since its already setup, have to go to work now and will setup my new CM10.1 N4 later, hopefully wont find any crazy bugs...

I had the same problem and after reading this thread I tried the Fastboot method first:
after I finished it didnt boot so I continue with the inst', then it booted but only with 8GB, so I continue with the inst' and from that stage it just didnt boot.
At the end I tried the root toolkit V1.6.2 and the phone back to life with stock rom and 16GB.

I'm back to stock now. But I've used the sideload successfully. After you get your phone restored, you'll probably want to do a full factory reset because some of your pushes have probably gone through and are now eating up space. You can't delete them that I know of unless you FULLY format.
ANYWAY
When I got sideload to work, I had to push it to /sdcard/0/, /sdcard0/, or something like that. Wish I could be more specific, but I don't want to change from stock to install cwm (the ROMS have too many bugs so far, and we might be getting 4.2.2)
The key is finding the right directory to push it to. Experiment with slashes, and it SHOULD work.

AOKP rom

So i got my nexus 4 yesterday and Ive always wanted to root an android phone and install a custom rom. So i unlocked the bootloader and rooted it pretty easy. I want to flash AOKP rom. i downloaded the rom file and google apps from their website on the phone. I went into CWM recovery and installed those files from the sd card, and it says its complete. I reboot the device and it just sits on the nexus logo screen. I dont know what i did wrong. Anybody got any ideas

It's normal for it to sit on that screen for about a minute or so.. How long did you give it?

3-4 minutes

make sure you have the correct files for your N4 or "Mako" device and that you did the steps properly.
wipe data/factory reset in recovery
flash ROM
flash Gapps
reboot

yeah im pretty sure i did that all correctly, but ill try again. Also for some reason when i try to boot into recovery sometimes, instead of going into CWM, it shows the android robot open with an exclamation mark on him. Any idea what that is

I believe that the stock recovery...
When you first boot cmw, it does not stay permanently afterwards...
You can flash it again by downloading ROM manager??
Or somthing else..

Maybe use adb+fastboot to flash ROM..
Just to try if the files aren't broken.

You can't flash a ROM in fastboot, you can only flash images.
You can flash the recovery image through fastboot.
I would let it sit for more than just 3-4 minutes as well.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think you have to format /system and format /boot when switching from another rom, otherwise it bootlops.

I accidentally wiped my sd card and system, data and cache in recovery and I can't install any ROMs because there are none. Since the N4 doesn't have an SD slot i can't even copy a rom zip to that and install it. How do I load ROM files with a Mac? I have a Mac so please take that into consideration. Thanks!

If you have access to fastboot follow the instructions in the [HOW-TO] How to flash a factory image / return to stock / unlock / root thread.
Essentially you'll be flashing a factory image. Again, as long as your bootloader is intact (fastboot mode) you'll be able to restore the device.

If youve got access to fastboot , flash a custom recovery that supports sideload. You'll use adb to push the zip to recovery and it'll flash it. I was in your position a few hours ago hahaha

Thanks for the help! What do you mean by bootloader is intact? How can it get broken?

I used the nexus toolkit to flash factory image. That made it nice and easy (after I fought with stupid Windows 8 driver problems for an hour :banghead: ).

For Those Who Semi-Bricked Their Nexus 7 0MB Interal Storage

Hopefully this helps people in my situation.
So on the first day of having my nexus 7 i found a way to have no OS and 0MB internal storage showing in TWRP. Yah i suck.
I tried tons of things but knew a system image was needed.
HOW: I was about to flash the superuser root for 4.3 newly released and forgot to put it on nexus so i then proceeded to exit TWRP, however upon exiting TWRP the recovery detected i havent installed supersu and asked do i want to install superuser? I though why the hell not!
I confirmed to install superuser and then tried to reboot but for 20 minutes device could not boot. TWRP showed 0MB internal storage and pushing adb files in this state yielded nothing as there was no directory
This is how i managed to have a working tablet again
1. FORMAT DATA in TWRP - after doing this your internal storage should be back and not show 0MB
2. reboot to the bootloader
3. On your computer download this file kindly given to us by phuduong and uploaded by Nburnes

4. Once downloaded move that system.img file to your adb directory
5. With you nexus 7 in the bootloader, adb open, and file downloaded copy and paste this command into adb terminal
fastboot flash system system.img
6. Now you have an OS but it still would loop and wouldnt start
7. Boot into recovery and Format Data again, because for me 0MB interal storage was back again
8. Then Factory Reset
FINALLY YOUR DEVICE SHOULD BE BACK TO ITS ORIGINAL STATE!!!!!

Is that the factory image? Have you tried going from unlocked bootloader & rooted back to factory using that image?

Google has yet to release the official factory image for the new N7. However, a kind user was gracious enough to make their own. It is likely to be almost identical to what Google will eventually release and should work the same way.

I tried running through this, but it didn't work for me. I think my situation is different though because I tried to install a factory image for the 2012 nexus, and during part of that process I ran the "flash-all" script which starts by deleting boot, cache, recovery, userdata, and system.
I think deleting boot screwed me up, because even though I can go into recovery now after reinstalling twrp and I can restore my system using system.img, I still can't boot (get stuck on the google logo). Any way to fix that?

This worked perfectly! I had a wiped system folder (no ROM), and obviously no USB debugging enabled. And with the lack of a factory image, I've been counting seconds to seeing somebody post this!

You can flash old and new image through fastboot. I did 2 times ^_^

OP and nburnes saved my butt!

I did this and now it seems my device is booting and it shows up as N7 when I attach it to my PC. But the display shows nothing at all. It just goes blank after the Google screen. Any ideas?
After flashing everything I could think of and banging my head and the device against the wall for two hours, I finally got it to work. Not sure how exactly but the last thing I did was reflashing bootloader. So if anyone has the same problem, try that.
