Question about the Next program - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hey Guys
Jut curious if anyone has the answer to this before I call AT&T about this.
The next program... which is what I have done when I switched service to AT&T in September- gets me a new phone every year I just pay monthly, so what happens to my S4 in September when I get my new phone?
Do I have to trade my s4 back in to get the new phone? Because I'm going to buy a OnePlus One next month and want to sell my S4 after... unless I have to keep it to trade it in, which would suck.
Thanks,
Matt

You won't have to keep the s4 for a trade in you just won't trade it in you pay the phone off in the 24 months or however long the plan that you took.
However in one year you want to change phones you'll have to give them the s4 back.
Also AT&T may block the IMEI from going on to another account until the phone is paid in full.

It is not a rental. You own the phone outright.
I asked this very question when I got my first next phone. It is just like T - mobiles plan. If the phone is not paid in full when you want a new one you pay it off plus the taxes for the new phone.
It sounds like you did the 12 month payment plan. At the end of 12 months you keep your phone even if you get a new one. If you keep the phone you monthly bill drops by the monthly payment. So after 12 months if you want a new phone, you will keep your current phone and just pay the taxes for the new phone.
Basically the next program is just the same as buying the phone at full price when you get it. Take the payment amount by the number of months and you will notice it comes out to the exact full price of the phone.
This saves you money over the subsidized phones where you end up paying more than the cost of the phone after 2 years.

Sweet thanks @CAG-man
So could I sell my S4 as soon as I got my One or would I have to wait til I paid it off before selling?

You're welcome.
As I understand the plan, you cannot upgrade a phone on a Next line until the current phone is paid off.
With that said, if you have your HTC One then you can sell your S4. You will have paid off your S4 either by the pay off period or because you paid off the balance in order to get the upgrade phone.
Again this is how I understood the plan when I asked those specific questions. I am not responsible if a representative or ATT says or does something else. Though I believe I am 95% sure of what I stated.

I'll give AT&T a call this weekend and post back here, I can't be the one trying to figure out how to get their hands on that new OnePlus One ;D

Early upgrade for only 75$

I just talked to a sprint rep about trying to push my upgrade because of the changeover of the premier status from 1yr to 2yrs. I got denied, but I did find out about this buy back (or buy up, I can't remember for sure) program.
If you are within 10 months of your two year upgrade you can pay 75$ and they will reset your eligibility. So granted I can't get a phone now as i'm still 12 months out from 2 yrs, in Oct I can call back and tell them I would like to do this and they charge 75$ to your account and reset your eligibility so you get a full upgrade. It's better than nothing. I hope this helps some people that are looking for a new phone.
I called this number I think it's been posted in other threads to go right to a rep.
877-775-4886
From the sounds of it you should be able to call just normal customer care as well though.
Easy math for the upgrade:
The math is you have to be 10 months from your actual two year upgrade. So if you hit one year aug 1st you can't use this until oct 1.
or
after 14 months this will work.
so how does the math work.. if you were to get a say the nexus s? would it be that much cheaper?

if u get it at best buy today

Hold up so on Aug 1st I hit a yr so am eligible for the partial upgrade.. meaning I can call and have them reset the upgrade for 75 and get the 2yr price ..

I thought you could just get your eligibility reset when you are at least one year into your contract.
Ya shoulda kept pushing to get your 1 year upgrade back so you could get a free (45$ activation) nexus s at best buy today. That's how I got my gf a free epic during their gaga for phones promotion. You can still try just keep saying the contract I signed included yearly upgrades and I want to use it at best buy cause at first they want youto buy it from them at normal price 199.99.

What is the point of buying up? A full 2 year upgrade discount is only $150. So you would still technically pay the same amount for a phone(that isnt free). I was told I could buy up for $45. subtract that from the full discount and my current $75 discount and they are only saving me an extra $30 bucks on a $500+ phone. it would be cheaper to pay an etf then sign a new contract or wait two months after a full upgrade and sign a new contract. This is just my understanding.

It's good to get the reset to take advantage of deal prices for upgrading to a new phone. For instance if you had an upgrade best buy was giving away nexus s for free today. think about it when the epic came out with an upgrade it was only 150 or something without it was like 5 hundo +, so I'd pay the 75 to save that much.

i just called the sprint store & my friend that owns the store... said its an extra $75 on top of what the phone costs... so unless the brand newest nexus 4g is free which its not... so its price will be the new contract price + $75 for the early upgrade
if you really really want a discount... did you guys know that the 2yr 1yr contract renewal price for phones is the same... & also the same if you were a random person who never had sprint... sprints "discounts" are a scam... everyone in the world gets the same discount no matter how long youve been or not been with sprint, so that being said call sprint & ***** to em about how youve been a loyal customer for however long & why does some random person get the same discount as me & your going to drop sprint when your contract ends & goto verizion or att or whatever... this is what i do every time i want a new phone & they will gladly give you at least an extra $75 credit toward a new phone or on your bill

Switching to Verizon - is signing contract required?

I am thinking about joining Verizon but am holding off until the new batch of phones come out (SIII or iPhone).
If switch now, is it possible to join as a new customer but not buy new devices and not sign a contract?
What I want to do is buy some used phones off eBay, join Verizon and wait to the new phones come out. Then I would sign a contract to get subsidized phones. Is this possible?
Or can I join with old phones and sign a contract but save the subsidies I get for the new contract for a few months to apply to the new phones when they come out?

Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
If you sign now there will be almost no way you can get the upgrade price on a new phone in anything less than a year, and probably very close to two years from now. I'm pretty sure the prepaid phones are the only devices you can run on VZ without contract.
If you want to get the 2-year price on a new phone you will likely have to wait, but I would suggest you actually go in to a VZ store and talk to a manager about this. There's always the chance they would let you delay using your contract price for a certain amount of time because I doubt they want to lose 6 months or more worth of service fees simply because the phone you want isn't out yet. No guarantees but it seems worth a shot.
If you buy the phone outright or thru other sources its month to month if u buy subsidized ur on contract for 2 years
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I'm pretty sure if you bring your own phone, you can go postpaid and month-to-month and cancel anytime without an ETF. However, I'm not sure if you'd get an upgrade to use later down the road.
I know Sprint is a carrier that requires a contract even if you bring your own device to them. I had assumed they wouldn't so I was pissed at that fact and terminated with them within the return period without incurring an ETF.
That's correct about sprint and u can use an upgrade anytime with Verizon if ur month to month but it would obviously defeat the purpose
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Sprint requires you to sign a two year contract even if you bring your own device. Verizon does not. I know this because I have done this with both carriers.

So if I walk into Verizon with my own phones, I can get a plan with no contract... Then when the phone I want comes out, I can sign a contract to get a subsidized phone? Is this correct?

When switching to any provider you need to sign a contract but when you do buy the best phone they have and sell them on craigslist as soon as you get it for the most dollar. Then put your older phones on while making the money on the other phones

They definitely do NOT have to honor it. This happens all the time on Red Flag Deals. Someone posts a price error or system glitch, a hundred people jump on it and place orders, a hundred people get cancellation emails a day later.
I'll eat my hat if any actually receives one of these for that price.

I just order one myself and it says phone on 1 line with 309$ as the price and there was no amount beside the bonus line where you would usually have 500$ rebate applied against the 650$ if you took a 3 year agreement.
Moreover, I never had to fill a complete subscription form. So it's a pay and go price. Now I will only need to unlock this phone to sell it!

Cancelling Verizon without etf

I really want to buy a nexus 4 and use T-Mobile prepaid service however i am currently locked into a contract until dec2013. My current options is to pay a $200 etf and sell my current galaxy nexus, however i would prefer to press my luck trying to not pay an etf. Has anyone had any luck doing so lately? I know about 10 years ago i cancelled att because i moved and didn't have any coverage at my new house and my cell phone is my primary phone. Just wanted to get some opinions, thanks!
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I don't think you can get out of a etf should you decide to cancel your service. Its just a matter of whether you don't mind owing Verizon and just go ahead and get T-Mobile.
Pretty sure the only ways to not pay an etf on most carriers are:
- moving to an area of no coverage
- death (seriously)
- military deployment
& I am not sure of the others. & all of those, you need to provide paperwork/proof.
Good luck. I am currently wishing I could get out of my T-Mobile contract.

Another option would be to use an "excessive" amount of data in a roaming area. This appears to have worked for a Sprint user.

I did the same thing last month. they hit me with the etf but the way i look at it was that i was spending over $100 a month on my GNex with verizon, so etf was equal to two months of service with verizon. So i just swallowed it and paid the amount. you'll break even in about 3 months instead of waiting for Dec. VZW has you by your b***s.....
The monthly savings will compensate for your etf in 3 months but if you have an Unlimited data contract you can do a transfer of liability on that line. I just did this and sold my Unlimited line for $125( on HowardForums.com) and then there is no ETF, but you will lose your phone number. Is your phone number worth $325(selling of line + etf), to me it was.

Verizon's ETF is $350 minus $10 for every month you've paid into your contract and they will not let you out of it. If you do port the number early do it at the end of your billing period as Verizon will continue to bill you through the end of the cycle. I had to call them and get them to refund me 3 weeks that I didn't have service with them that they still automatically billed me for. They claimed they don't know when the port actually goes through so they continue to bill you just in case you change your mind.
join solavei! only $49 unlimited a month no contract and from the money you'll be saving monthly you'll break even in a month or two
There isn't a loophole to get out of an etf right now.

Don't have to lose your number, you could have ported the number over to google voice (or any other carrier) and just told verizon to provision you a new number on that line.
If you transfer responsibility of your line to someone else you don't pay an ETF.

You might be better off posting this in the Sprint section or maybe even the Verizon section. I do not know why a Nexus owner would ever want to go to the Verizon if you know what I mean.
I got out ETF free from Verizon a couple of months ago because I got bad service by my house and I am loving that I can now purchase a Nexus from the play store and use it on a pre-paid plan with no contracts or ETF's.

You can get someone to take over your contract. What worked for me was I paid someone $100 to take over my contract with Rogers and i still kept my SGS3(which I sold to buy a N4) which was better than paying $500 to cancel

The easiest way to get out of the contract is to make the carrier cancel it for you. "How do you make the carrier cancel the contract?" you ask...simple...roam.
Even though you probably have unlimited roaming on your plan, the carrier has a threshold that they really don't want you to cross because it costs them money when you use another carrier's towers. If you keep crossing that threshold the carrier will basically kick you off their network, effectively cancelling your contract.

Best Buy Pricematching AT&T $150 For GN3

I actually did this 2 weeks ago in Daly City, CA. All I did was tell them that ATT is current offering 50% off smart phones which is still in their website. If you click on the deal link, you will see the GN3 is there. However, I believe it's only for phones < $200. But the manager knew about the deal and price matched without any resistance.
I did this again in Austin, TX last week for my dad. This time the manager is being more resistant. He said it's $250 on their website not $150. I then told him you have to complete the check out process for the promotion to show up. Luckily, one of his employees confirmed that. You might even be able to get it for $125 since it's $250 with 2 year contract on the ATT website.
Good luck.

What are you guys telling retentions to get this? I've called and never gotten any kind of deal like that...

Are you eligible for an upgrade? I got the same offer. $100 credit after 30 days, $25 off any phone and waived activation fees.
I dialed 611 and choosed cancel service. Told the guy I wanted to cancel my line. Of course they always say sorry to hear that and would like to know why. I told him I found a better deal for the phone I wanted from another carrier. At the time Amazon was selling the note 3 for $124.99 with a new activation. What a great price huh but I've no intention of switching to sprint even if the phone was free. Terrible service where I live. I don't know if he bothered to look it up or not but a minute later I got the offer.
So I'm still not sure if I want buy the phone yet. I've been checking this forum to see if it's going to be worth it. As soon as safe strap arrive then I'll probably pull the trigger.
Oh and I've confirmed that you can still get the credit even if you don't order from At&t. I asked him to note that on my account. So basically I can get the note 3 from amazon for $199.99 minus the $100 credit.

i called att on black friday (just like last year when i got my 2 s3 for $.01 each) and requested an upgrade. the rep on the phone told me i was unable to upgrade at the 1 year point and had to wait for another year till my contract expired. i told her i was able to upgrade the year before with no problems and the rep told me their policies had changed and the only way i could upgrade was to switch to the next program (not happening). so i told her if i had to wait till next year that i would cancel my service and go else where. she asked what phones i wanted and i told her i wanted the s4 for the wife and i was on the fence about the lg g2 and the note 3. she put me on hold and came back saying they would allow me to upgrade early and they would give me the s4 for $49 and the note 3 for $99. so after taxes and everything (free overnight shipping, no activation fees) i paid $165 for an s4 and note 3. then my little victory came crashing down after i logged in here to find i was getting a locked bootloader

I got the Deal Of the Decade.
Note 3 $175
$100 bill credit (to be issued with 45 days)
Waived Upgrade Fee
Free Overnight Shipping
And ......... a Free Galaxy Gear smartwatch
That would mean I got the N3 for $75 ............................................................ but,
I just sold the Gear on Craig's List this afternoon for $240 bucks.
So I got the N3 for free, and put $165 in CASH straight into my xmas fund!
Holy crap, maybe the deal of the centry possibly? :victory:
^^^awsome deal, wish I got that.
Sorry for the late reply, but for those of you that couldn't get it, just call again, it took me 3 calls. I just told them that I need to lower my monthly bill and I want the phone for $199. Didn't need to beat around the bush for me, straight to the point. And one of my lines was due for an upgrade.
Just got to be persistent. Good luck
FYI, Amazon has the phone for $199 with upgrade. Maybe mention that if you want. But it shouldn't matter
Just letting you all know, Best Buy currently has the Note 3 for $149 for new lines, as well as the S4 for free (the promotion is for $50 off of the current sale price, so the Note 3 is listed at $199 and the S4 is 49.99). No haggling or price matching required. I set up a new Mobile Share plan on AT&T, ported over from Verizon, and got a Note 3 and S4 on contract for $160 out the door.
Just to be clear this is for new customers only?
Never made sense to me why people are promised the Moon until they are loyal customers...
I'd like my wife's note to actually be opened before the price drops from 300.... but if I can return it and rewrap it and pocket 100 more for Christmas that's okay too.

strategy?
did you call att?
any notes on calling them and how to demand and get that kind of a price?
I currently have verizon galaxy nexus with unlimited data hooked up to my friends line for $50/month. contract ends in 2 weeks.
I have 6 lines with ATT for my family 10gb share and they only use like 4gb a month so if I join them for $30/month then I will be good for 5-6gb/month. I never went over 3gb/month with verizon all this time that I had UNLIMITED data. I really wanted to keep unlimited data with verizon and get the Note3 with them and pay $50/month with them but verizon won't let me keep the unlimited. the way around is I open a line with verizon and make a switch of phones and put dumb for the new opend line and pay $10/month then I will be paying $60/month to stay with Verizon to keep the unlimited data vs. $30/month with ATT with about 5-6gb/month.
I am debating but I know that I should go with ATT and save hundreds of $$ for next 2 years.
So Please help me and guide me to get some good deal like you :fingers-crossed:
