phone gets warm - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just switched to g2 from the nexus 4. Seems like this phone gets a lot warmer than I'm used to. My CPU is hovering around 65 degrees just browsing xda..is that normal? Feels warm in my hand. I've tried installing a custom kernel (simplekernel) and UV by -50 and underclocked to 2ghz but that doesn't seem to help. My cpu bin is also PVS bin 2. Does that have anything to do with it? Any advice to help me bring cpu operating temps down would be appreciated. Thanks.

Reason why I installed Dorimanx kernel....I have no UV mostly defaults and I can use feedly now...

Tried stock, dorimanx, and simple but they all run warm for me. I'm on an aosp rom with furnace now and I'm running cool but it'd be nice to be on an LG based rom because camera seems better.

Show off your OC and UV settings here.

Every TF is different. Someone has reported being able to unvervolt by -250 or more. I don't know how the hell he did it. Anyway, I thought I'd start this thread to let people show off their OC and UV settings. I thought I could get a feel on what the stable limits are.
Remember, guys, it's only considered stable if the camera doesn't freeze. I don't care how much stress test you do. If your camera doesn't work, then it's not stable.
The 2 lowest clock settings there are, it's like 250 and 320 mhz or something I can run a 250 undervolt. This is extremely useful because I run on interactive and my tablet runs on almost no battery at all while on standby.
As for my underclocks up from that to about 1590s(My tablet can't handle 1600s) I have a steady 65 undervolt for all frequencies. I found battery life to be amazing...

Hi there! What are you using to undervolt and/or overclock? I'm using CPU Master Free to overclock, but it doesn't have any undervolting options.
EDIT: also, which kernel are you using that supports Undervolting and Overclock?
Prime kernel doesnt seem to support uV at the moment
Blades does
Clemsyn does
Dont think netformer does
Settings im still playing and waiting for uV on prime kernel as ive found it the most stable at the moment will post back later

Does your camera work when you set everything to -65? My camera will not work if I unvervolt 608 or 456 mhz.

Post your Glitch v14 live OC and step values

Now that we have a new way to overclock in v14 there are near unlimited variables to overclocking with this kernel. I've found a good balance of performance with 1300ghz step and live OC value of 121%. Let us know what has worked for you. You may include voltages as well.
I'm using reborn90's settings
200-1000; 110% live oc arm volt; 800/950/1100/1175 int volt; 1000/1000/1000/1025
Seems rather steady, I also recommend turning save on boot in settings of nstools before applying these settings just in case xD

I am on 100-1300 with 116% Live OC, haven't played with voltage yet but everything runs great.
I can't seem to get any live OC percentage stable and anything around 118% + automatically freezes and reboots.any suggestions?

Do you UV first then live oc? Or is it just stock voltages?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using xda premium
For the most part I just use stock voltages when playing around with live OC because I haven't found any voltages in threads that i'm sure are stable.

it depends on how far you phone can go, some can oc more then others but some less then others, I usually never go passed 1.2ghz ,I'd rather save battery.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using xda premium
Just my opinion, but since Android 4.0 relies so heavily on the hardware rendering capabilities of the phone you'd be better off to UNDERCLOCK the CPU to 800mHz, and apply the Live OC to say 125% and have an effective CPU speed of 1000mHz while increasing the GPU clock by the same amount. I've tried it and it works very well but I didn't stick with it long enough to see how it affected battery life. You will need to modify your voltages though. I was at 1250mV on the 800mHz step.
If anyone is interested in just using stock settings, i found this thread interesting:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424064
100-800 mhz, 125% live oc.
So how much of a change have you noticed from Stock kernel to Glitch. I tried OCing once.. and it froze.. and phone died.. and ended up having to wipe / re-flash. Probably user error though
Just wanted to say I accidentally OC'd to 1.4ghz with 110% LOC and man did this thing fly and didn't even crash.
Sent from my ICS Mesmerize
I noticed I'm able to achieve higher stable oc (over 1500) using low leakage voltage and live oc of 116 or less. Without low leakage i can barely acheive 1400 oc at anything over 110 live oc. Never noticed this much difference in internal voltage stability in previous kernel version. I wonder what's changed?

Phone getting heated

Hi guys I dont play much games on my phone ,
Yesterday when checked found modern combat for free on samsung apps downloaded installed and now when I started playing it gets heated very soon is this normal or is it due to over clocking of cpu and gpu?
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
Hello, what is your current voltage for your cpu and gpu? And frequency (cpu/gpu)?
Undervolt probably can resolve the problem!
Sorry for my english, i'm french!

It's normal. I haven't over or underclocked or overclocked my phone and when playing highly intensive graphiv games, it heats up. If you have a case on it, that could contribute.
SGH-T889.Rooted.Jedi X12
Having a case on heats the phone up? I haven't rooted or played any intensive games on my phone. I do have a case and I am noticing the phone heats up quite a bit when you charge your phone or if your 3G connection is ON for long. I think that's the reason my SD Card got busted, due to excessive heating. Can anyone confirm the phone heating up coz of a case?
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
Yes guys ive a case bit when playing I remove it and the heating usually happens on the front and back side of my screen where the back camera is located
Ive set max feq to 1.8
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
If it isn't turning off then you are fine. A quad core cpu with a gpu on board will get warm in the designated area, especially given the fact there is no ventilation.
Your cpu set to 1.8ghz and voltage?
You can test decrease voltage by 0.25mv to reduce heat and better battery life.
For me actually 1.8ghz = 1250mv

Its the case with only a few games. I hope it will be fixed with an update. The XXDMC3 firmware is said to have come up with a fix already!

Yea im on ktoonz kernel and I tested it on a couple different oc settings and I can only get it to frun on 1890 oc anything over that it closes after 1 percent

You won't be able to run Antutu with my settings. It heats up too fast. In my opinion Antutu sucks. It really does. I can get 14690 in quadrant with my settings. What good is it to have a benchmarking program if you have to underclock to run it? Pfft I'll pass on Antutu...annnnd...you're welcome lol!
What rom are you running?
Some of the developers include tweaks in their roms that clash with the kernel cause benchmarks to blow, but it doesn't affect if not actually improve real world performance.
For example, unknownforce had included some tweaks in ForceRom but once he removed them people's benchmarks back to normal. It's not the kernel, running Ktoonez's on my own modded stock gets me 14500 quadrants and 25k+ antutu.
Same goes for all the Blue Kuban users, Ruje included some tweaks implemented into his rom and those interfere with how the kernel runs the benchmarks - this "interference" isn't bad, it's just messes up the way the benchmarks run.
Plus - Antutu itself is very stressful on the CPU shooting up the temp to 70 degrees in about five seconds, so that can also be an issue.

Im actually running force rom and ktoonz kernel and I have to underclock to run it. Kinda lame but I also think there is something wrong with my phone I get screen that changes colors and flashes purple its kinda weird

4.3 reduced antutu score or its just me..

K guys.. I am not sure if its 4.3 or something else.. Can someone confirm.. I used to get 18000+ on my 4.2 n4 and over 24000 with faux overclocking kernels for 4.2
Now i am getting 14000 - 16000.. With 4.3..

Try the S4 dalvik patch that's floating around here. Boosted my score to 20k+ on PA 3.99 with stock PA kernel at 1512/1512.
Using this combo as my daily driver since a week and no problems so far.

What kind of numbers did you get before the mod?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Around 16-17k if I remember correctly. Also don't forget that heat throttling is pretty aggressive on the N4. So make sure your device has cooled down before the next run.
Pro tip: put your N4 onto a cold ceran stove when benchmarking. They're made to conduct heat efficiently and will keep your device cool
Well I wouldn't give those numbers too much credit...
they represent more the settings that you enter, than device performance.
I for instance use the latest franco Kernel. With the settings I use every day (interactive governor, default clocks), I get arount 15-18k in antutu. But the device feels as snappy as hell in normal usage and gaming.
If I switch to performance governor, ramping the minimal and maximal cpu clock up to 1512MHZ while raising the cpu throttling from 65 to 90° I reach antutu scores in the range of 20-22k.
But I obviously would never ever use these settings every day.
That beeing said, these numbers do not really represent how the devices behaves in every day usage, which is much more important to me than any number, a benchmark puts out.

I have a couple of questions:
It's your phone still working like it should?
Do you really care about the scores you get to be able to enjoy your N4?
Do you think the scores of benchmark really say everything about your phone?
If you compare a S4 or M7 with a N4, and in one test (by chance) you get the same scores, do you think your N4 has the same power as a S4 or M7?
Stop worrying about benchmark scores, I used to be like that bench-marking all the time, at the end I just got tired of it!!!
Now I just enjoy my phone the way it is.
Good luck!!!
CM-10.2 and CM kernel got 20728

CM10.2 unmodified with Franco kernel default settings...
btw. Antutu 4 score: 21336
Benchmarks are useless, its how the device feels when using it what matters.
