Hi,
I have quite got the hang of rooting, flashing and customising my UK version Note 3 but I wanted to hear from other UK users as to which ROM (or ROM's) they recommend and why.
I want something fairly lean but as long as it provides improvement over the stock Samsung ROM.
I have tried out Carbonrom which is great visually but does lack some features and has over simplified others plus has one or two stability issues. Tried a few others but not sure how safe they are (from a security point of view) and how stable.
Strangely enough I have gone back to the stock KitKat 4.4.2 Samsung ROM with the Custom Recovery and Root enabled, hopefully I can workout how to unbloat the phone and I might just stick to the crappy touchwiz.
Cheers,
Fz
Omega rom. That is all.

CivZ Flexkat 2.8 is very good imo, just try a few and keep the one best suited for you
Thanks for the feedback, tried those but ended up settling in Jackyaway nd5_1 rom.
It's not feature packed but is light and has just what I need for now.

I got my SG S4 a few months ago and want to move off from the stock software. My phone is already rooted and want to know what the top roms are, or if I should still wait to get one. I have rooted and flashed my kindle fire but still a little shaky on backup and bootloader working. Any feedback is appreciated!

Omega has both Touchwiz version and GE version. I personally choose TW version and it seem that v9 is coming very soon. Mix it with a good kernel and everything is perfect.
Thread closed as its a Best ROM thread.
I need help with a rom that doesnt keep rebooting randomly. and the wifi works any suggestion
The touch wiz roms tend to be more stable. Look at triforce or intrinsic or negalite

Check the threads of the rom you want specially tw roms. All of them are good. And for WiFi issues have been resolved just flash a different kernel. If you want stock kernel then re-flash stock kernel

I personally use free gs4 Rom by team sonic. Is pretty stable and is nearly close to stock!

I'm on TriForce with ktoonsez kernel with zero problems for quite awhile now. Love this Rom.

Definitely a personal preference kind of thing. I am using TriForce 3.1 with AGAT kernel. No issues here. I usually flash roms every so often, but I've been using this one for some time now & gotta say I love it Also looking forward to Hyperdrive.
I am using Sacs Custom v5 with Ktoonz kernal and have neither of the issues you do OP.

Has anyone updated to 4.3 official using any of the roms from sammobile? I see the nordic countries 4.3 is available, I normally use either this, the German or Swedish version, I've even used a Hong Kong one before now lol, but with the recent changes Sammy have made regarding knox and location lock etc, I'm a bit dubious to upgrade.
They normally just work, just checking this is still the case before I end up with an expensive paperweight.
There is a thread somewhere by chainfire with a fix to sammys region lock. The lion rom is pretty much stock with nox removed, you just have to use devil's kernel for wifi

Cheers mate but need to stay unrooted for the main apps I use.

I have flashed mine to the nordic contries im in uk and everything works great yes it has knox but I have had no problem rooting or installing custom roms. Im on the new skynote 4.3 note 3 edition and its the best rom I have used so far

Cheers mate. I flashed it the other day haven't got around to posting an update yet.
Yes it has knox, but I'm not going to be rooting this device because I use it for sky and a few other apps that require unrooted.
Impressions are good so far. Everything is smooth and all my apps are working as they were before, including the sky sports app which got an update recently to work with 4.3.
One thing to note though, if you use allshare cast dongle. It has a problem working with 4.3 devices that have been updated. So if you run into this issue the fix is to do a factory reset.
There is a workaround for rooted devices on here, it's in the S4 section.
A bit of a pain having to reset I know but seems to be the only solution for unrooted devices that run into it.

Hi mate
I'm also using the sky go app, and on stock 4.1 I've just been using ota rootkeeper to toggle root when needed. I really need root for the viper audio mod.
I'm just wondering which 4.3 ROM you've got it to work on? With 4.1.2 it NEEDS to be stock ROM and kernel for sky go to work. If I upgrade I want to get a ROM without knox, but any custom ROM won't work.
Please let me know as right I'm sticking to 4.1.2.
Thanks

There weren't any custom rom's available for the 7105 that were stock with knox/location lock removed when I last checked (may be different now?). I just used the nordic rom from sammobile.
If there's none available I think you'll need to wait for a dev to rip the rom and remove knox if you don't want it. Unless you have the time and skills to diy I got the skills but not the time, unfortunately
As I said, I'm not bothered about knox at the moment. I was more bothered by location lock, but I've not had any issue so far.

Why not just flash the bootloader from DN3 it works with all the official roms and is knox free?

Yeah I will probably do that at some point.
I'm assuming I can restore my nandroid backup to 4.1.2 if I'm not happy?
The xposed mod unfortunately didn't work... Thanks anyway
Some apps are funny as to what they decide is a security risk. Sky are so far up Apple's arse they tend to look for anything that's NOT as the manufacturer released as a security issue. It's actually bollocks but try telling them that.
My other Note 2 is rooted and running 4.3 without all the bs. But most of the apps I need simply won't install/run due to idiotic requirements of the app provider. Hence why I have a 2nd note 2 which has been rooted but I had to unroot and reset the flash counter to get these apps to work. Guess Sammy aren't too fussed, they did get 2 sales from me lol

I am considering to root and flash custom rom, I am just thinking if I will lose some pre installed apps like Samsung's Action Memo and S Note. Those two apps are my favorite and I don't want to lose them.
What are other important things should I know before rooting or flashing custom roms. How about my files and datas saved in phone's memory?
Please help. I would really appreciate your response l. Thank you in advance.

Only time you will lose action memo and s memo is when you flash an AOSP rom or a debloated Touchwiz rom
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk
So I can still have the Action Memo and S Note as long as I don't flash AOSP and the debloated TW rom?
So I am thinking to go with Cynogenmod. Would that work better?
Sent from my SM-N9005 using XDA Free mobile app
CM is AOSP, so it won't have any S Note or Action Memo stuffs. You will have to look for alternatives, but there are none which is as good as S Note or Action Memo.
And debloated TouchWiz means just some cut apps from stock ROM. Mainly those are apps which very few people use, like S Voice, Chat On, Trip Advisor and some Google apps like Books, Games etc., not Action Memo or S Note.
If you want to keep Action Memo or S Note then you will have to use TouchWiz based ROMs only, doesn't matter custom or stock.
I see. So I need to stick with TW to keep Action Memo and S Note, but I can still root my phone right? What I don't want to do is not to flash custom rom. Please confirm. TIA
Sent from my SM-N9005 using XDA Free mobile app
Yes, of course! Rooting has literally nothing to do with those apps, go on, root.
Is there any alternative for Action Memo? Or any note taking apps for me to use my S pen?

You can root and you can install custom roms which are based in samsung stock rom, without losing action memo.
Really!? That is a good news! But I have no idea what samsung stock roms based is.
If you could give me a link of an article or tutorial I would really appreciate it. Thanks a lot sir.

Stock ROM means the official ROM, like it came from Samsung. Custom ROMs are those that are modified, have different tweaks and so on, and they are generally not very stable (occasional bugs, lag etc). The more features they have, generally the more laggy they are.
If you want a fluid ROM try Alexander's, it's basically a rooted stock ROM with very few modifications and root access. You will have s note, action memo and everything else you need. You can find the thread on my signature.
Another good ROM I recently tried is audax, it's surprisingly smooth for a custom ROM and it has some interesting features.
Thanks a lot, I really appreciate your help. I am now excited to root and flash the roms you mentioned. I just still need to learn how to do the root process and flashing roms first. I think I can do my research for tutorials and instructions.

Rooting can't be more easy really.
All you need is Odin on your computer, don't know what's the latest version, search on Google, I use 3.09 and it works fine. Then you need to install a custom recovery, TWRP for example, which you will get from here, https://twrp.me/ Flash it via Odin, I am sure you know you need to put it under AP (PDA) section of Odin. Now you have custom recovery installed.
And then finally you need to download SuperSU zip from here, https://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip
Have that zip package placed on your device, internal, external, doesn't matter, and boot into recovery mode (Vol Up+Power) and find that zip and flash it, done. You are rooted.
Thanks a lot for your help! Yup! I have successfully rooted my note 3.
Could you guys also help me how to install cwm recovery please? Does the file also depends on the model of the phone?

Hey guys, I happen to be running an old shostock rom from shortly after I got the phone. I believe I have the mdl bootloader but am only 90% sure.
Since it has been so long and I see so many threads about having to use safestrap I just want to be cautious with my flash.
I would like to try out a newer, but very stable ROM. Which ones are compatible with my device? I assume I still need to flash lokidoki.zip?
I used to love miui on my old inspire/desire hd....is there a good port for the gs4?
Thanks for the help!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using XDA Free mobile app
If you go to Settings, "About Phone" and check there or extra information, it should tell you the what the current bootloader is for your device, yes?
Dirty Unicorns is a stable MDL based ROM available in Kit Kat and Lollipop.
If you have an old ROM, I wonder if you may need to update your modem as well.
Whatever do you, don't forget to backup. Good luck.

Anyone else have anything to add? How stable are the aosp lollipop roms?
I do like touchwiz but I'm looking for a change of pace.
