Can't Update OTA, SDM Fails at Start, Trying to Keep Root - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello.
I'm having trouble updating via OTA. I froze sdm.apk but unfreezing didn't work. I tried installing a back up but that didn't work. Please help!
I'm rooted and trying to get kitkat while using supersu survival mode.
Thanks for the help.

Really, no one has a solution?

Unroot, maybe factory reset and then update, root again?
or safe yourself the trouble and just flash the rom you want with Odin? In both cases you have to root again.

1. Make a backup of ur Internal Memory
2. Make a factory reset (Settings > Accounts > Back Up and Reset > Factory Data Reset > Reset Device > Delete All/Erase Everything.)
3. Conect it to Kies 3
4. Kies 3 will give u the info you need for know ur correct CSC. This will be btw parenthesis close CSC.
5. Knowing ur CSC, take a look for this firmware in Sammobile.com
6. Download and flash it with ODIN (Dont flash a "Black EDITION" if ur phone isnt it).
7. Root it again :highfive:

Thanks to those that replied.
How about we try this first. Can someone provide a sdm.apk file? Every time I search for it all I get is how to block OTA updates, nothing about getting the original file.

Unable to upgrade firmware

I own a rooted Galaxy S4.
I would like to upgrade firmware using:
Settings -> General -> Device Info -> Software upgrades -> Update.
After resetting flash counter and using Triangle Away workaround to make the phone able to download latest firmware from Samsung's server, I'm able to start the upgrade procedure.
Firmware is downloaded, I chose to upgrade frmware and reboot the phone, but then nothing happens, no firmware upgrade is installed.
Is there a solution?
TIA
If u rooted ur phone u dont gona be able to install OTA updates how u are trying it. But u can:
1. This update will be a .zip file. You need flash this file by STOCK RECOVERY
or
2. Conect to Kies (android 4.2.2) or Kies 3 (android 4.3) and update it for there :highfive:

Thank you for your answer.
Do you mean that I'm unable to use OTA upgrade also using Triangle Away workarounds?
There is a specific workaround used to make the phone able to connect to Samsung servers and download firmware upgrades: Triangle Away disables Superuser for a few minutes so you can use OTA upgrade function.
Kies behavior is the same: it downloads the firmware, but then the upgrade isn't applied.
Before install firmware upgrade by stock recovery or Odin, I would like to discover if there is a way to upgrade it by Kies or OTA.

Can't Root S4 i9505 on Kitkat 4.4.2

Hi All
I bought an S4 which is my first Samsung Device, its delopment stuff seems diifferent than HTC or Xperia Devices I used.
Previously I was on JB 4.3, Today I downloaded a firmware from sammobile.com and Flashed the firmware i9505xxvfnb8, Then I tried CF Root method but it didnt root the device. I updated to FC9 firmware (latest one) and tried to root but it didnt work either.
Now I dont know if its even possible to root KK 4.4.2.
The last I tried to flash FC9 (PREROOTED WITH CWM Installed from THIS this thread. The ROM is being flashed as i can see update but there was no SuperUser and neither was any CWM recovery installed.
Please tell me how to root and get Recovery installed.
MY PHONE HAS NO WARRANTY SO I DONT CARE IF THERE IS COUNTER STUFF. Its a carrier free phone. Just need a rooted device on 4.4.2 with CWM installed.
If not possible , cant I downgrade to 4.3?
The thing is the update to android 4.4.2. It "hides" some apps sometimes. Make a backup of your Internal Memory and factory reset ur phone (Settings > Accounts > Back Up and Reset > Factory Data Reset > Reset Device > Delete All/Erase Everything) if the process of root went ok through ODIN. You will see the SuperSU app when ur phone reboots :highfive:
Lol and F*** , that really worked.. thanks mate you saved the day...:highfive:

You will have to reflash the firmware. SystemUI.apk/.odex cant be pushed to the system without have a CUSTOM Recovery. I supose you haven't any custom recovery coz you wanna preserve KNOX 0x0.
Thank you for your reply!
Yes, I don't have custom recovery because I don't wanna loose the warranty.
When I reflash the firmware and root it again with towelroot, will SystemUI crash again?

[Q] How To Make Samsung Galaxy Core 2 (SM-G355H) Good As New?

Hi! How do I make my device good as new like I just recently bought it? I am not just telling about hard reset. I mean EVERYTHING will be good as new, no records of roots or binary counters, restored to original stock firmware, whatever they are, I have no idea, ahahaha . I just want to know how to make it GOOD AS NEW just in case something went wrong with my device. Thanks in advance!

Hi,
In order to restore everything on your device as good as new, you must download the original stock firmware along with the pit file (if needed). You can obtain the firmware via either Sammobile or Samsung Updates. Don't forget to check your phone model before downloading. After downloaded, reboot your phone to Download mode then extract and flash the firmware via ODIN on AP. After the stock firmware installed, reboot to Recovery mode and select both Wipe data/factory reset and Wipe cache partition.
Hope this helps.

Is the firmware downloaded from sammobile safe? Can you teach me or give me a link how to use odin and will it conflict kies in my computer? Also, will these methods erase binary counters like triangle away?

Hi,
Sammobile requires you to register at their site, but it's safe and also fast to download. Besides the firmware and ODIN, you need the USB Drivers installed and Debugging mode to be enabled (by tapping Build number 7 times on Settings -> About device).
Files to download:
ODIN -> Click here
USB Drivers -> Technical Documentation | SAMSUNG Developers
After you obtain the firmware and ODIN, here is the step to use ODIN to flash firmware:
Extract the firmware and ODIN to anywhere you know.
Open ODIN, click AP button, and choose the firmware (in .tar.md5 format).
Hit start.
Firmware flash will take about 5-10 minutes. Don't unplug the USB cable or you will hard brick your phone.
After you see green RESET! or PASS, unplug USB cable from your phone and wait until recovery installs all files.
Don't forget to reboot to Recovery mode and choose both Wipe data/factory reset and Wipe cache partition.
After installing the stock firmware back, it's safe to update or connecting your device via Kies as long as your stock firmware is not modified (either by rooting or something else). And on your last question. Do you mean that this method will erase flash binary counters? If yes, probably not.
As a additional note, download the version that match your region code. So doing a backup of EFS partition is strongly recommended!
Hope this helps.
give me firmware link????????
