Please help:
I'm on CM9 19 6 nightly. Using Semaphore kernel without any modifications to the scripts.
The problem: My signal keeps on going out at regular intervals.
I've used XXJVU, DDJV5, XXJVT, KF1(Nexus modem for ICS) and various more. I stay on the modems for a week and then change to another one. The latest one is DDJV5 which I have been using since the past 2 weeks.
Tried all of the modems I could lay my hands on. Nothing works.
But the moment I come to work, the signal keeps fluctuating over the day. Sometimes it would be out for 10-15 minutes. When it's back, it would get back to giving -65 .. -71 dBm. It would stay like that for a few minutes and then it would be gone again for another 10-15 minutes or so.
It has turned into an OCD where I keep checking my signal.
This does not happen when I'm back home and then I'm back to getting good signal.
Yes, this looks to you like a locational issue. I thought so too. BUT, how did I get so good signal till a week back at work?
Question: What could have made this mess to my signal reception? How can I solve this?
No, all my syncs are OFF. I keep my 3G turned off and only use it once an hour or so for a few minutes. I don't use any signal consuming apps.
Also, sometimes the 3G would work even without the signal.
Another thing, sometimes there's a (x) sign at the signal bar thing and sometimes there is no (x) without bars.
As a cure for the OCD, I've taken an off from work today just to get some rest from checking my signal every now and then. And maybe find a solution.
I'm on Vodafone India.
Indians, I am on Vodafone India in Pune, Hinjewadi Information Technology park. Maybe Pune guys can help me out too?
maybe the phone changes the network mode.. 2g 3g or i dont know , try to put in in 2g only mode , or gsm only mode.
When the signal bar shows with a "x" it means the network is not available...go to settings and change the Network mode to "GSM Only". It will solve the fluctuating issue but network speed will be limited to 2G only.

Thanks, let me try it out.
Where is the network changing option to GSM only in ICS?
Okay, I guess it's the 2G mode.

Is going to 2G mode my ONLY option?
How can I fix this and get back to using 3G?
Update:
Changing to 2G mode fixed the problem. BUT...
I have a few questions now:
I want to use 3G but at the same time I don't want the signal to fluctuate between 2G and 3G—want to get constant 3G connectivity without signal fluctuations. Is there any way I can fix that?
I remember reading somewhere that going to recovery and changing permission helps this.
Anyone knows how to change the permissions so the signal fluctuations stop?
I have done a lot of reading on XDA but I haven't noticed an issue like this.
CM9 guys, anything please...

I have the same issue mate...using 2G is the only option to get signal without any problem.
The problem doesnot lies on your phone but the problem is with the operator. The area where you live hardly 3G signal reaches there (same problem with me).
You got two options to fix this issue:
1. Change your Network Operator
Or
2. Settle to another location where 3G signal is fully available
Sent from my GT-i9100 equipped with Grenade Launcher and Remote Explosives
Both the options look impossible for me at the moment.
I will start living with the hope that the operator brings us some decent 3G signal here.
Thanks a lot anyways. It was helpful. Hope others facing the issue can learn from this thread. :good:

Complain to your provider, very loud!
:gooditto the same problem occured to me on Vodafone (Chennai) tried all modems listed above nothing worked ...Used to lose signals all the time with 2g data on especially at my workplace intermittently for 3-4 months ever since I upgraded to ICS..Sometimes used to lose signal even if data was off..multiple reboots/restarts gave no solution ..issue persisted across all the 15+ roms i might have flashed over the past 6 months..
Finally fed up I ported the number to AIrtel..everything works like a charm on JV9 I must say now..can vouch it's a network issue at the location
I am getting constant 5 bars on the 2G network. 3G gives me 2 bars at max.
Asked Vodafone about the future of 3G in my location and they said "We are spreading, sir. We will keep you informed".
I've had this problem too when the phone was constantly switching between 2G and 3G/3.5G. Try adding "Toggle 2G/3G" to notification drawer, set the "Network modes" for it to 2G/3G Only or 2G/3G Only/3G+2G. Switching between modes can take 10-20 seconds, but you should be able to test if you can get good enough 3G only connectivity (in case it is just a network switching problem like for me).
If you want 3G only, Dial *#*#4636#*#* - Phone information - WCDMA only.
I am unable to connect to GSM only network ... My N4 while roaming out of city limits doesnot catch GSM signal .. it only works with 3g signal .. I noticed this issue just a week back and it has kept me worried .. Can someone point me to a proper direction with regards to this issue.. I flashed the latest available radio JDQ39E but still no luck.. there is no GSM signal.. My nexus 4 has the latest 4.2.2 rom in it.:crying:

Where are you at? Which network? There are areas (rare but there are) where t-mobile is wcdma (3g) only.

I am in India .. My Provider is Vodafone
Did you figure out this? I am experiencing the same issue on my HTC One. I am able to make Emergency calls, though..
I seem to be having the strangest LTE / 4G signal issues with the S4. I get 4G fine but when i leave a 4G area it drops to H+ or if the signal on 4G is weak it drops to H / H+ during this transition i am left without any signal for seconds to minutes as it switches.
Is there any way to find out what my LTE modem version is as i know my GSM one?
I am not too sure if this switch is normal to be lost without signal as GSM > H > H+ works fine and i still have signal

how do i do this? i can only see GSM modem not LTE. i know both versions maybe different
Mate the baseband of your phone is the same for both the gsm and lte configurations of your phone. If that won't work you can still check your carriers vpn configurations to see if there are correct

**If you are having the new bootloader XXUD flash GSM_Modem_XXUEMJ5_and_LTE_Modem_XXUEMJ5.tar file with odin by selecting phone.
So this means that even if it says the LTE modem is different to the GSM modem you are saying that the help about the modem for GSM and LTE is in fact the same?

From my knowledge you cant flash anything you like. You need to flash the correct modem for your region.Whats the version of your bootloader and your country so i can link you the correct file
I am experiencing the same thing, the switch from H+ to 4G doesn't drop the actual signal from the network whereas from 4G to H+ the signal drops leaving me no service at all for a few seconds.
I am starting to think that this is the normal behavior because it's like this since I got the S4. Oh and I have the latest modem for my country as well if that helps.
Perhaps someone with knowledge on how the modem works can chime in?

Thanks chickentuna for your reply
Ok the 4G works perfectly fine in Hong Kong, London but as soon as i leave london and go to areas with 4G but low signal, i get the horrible loss of network until the phone does a search. I think its more network / phone related but would just need to learn to disable 4G out of the main cities.
asbanoglou thanks for trying you can flash any modem but whether or not it will work is another matter. I understand bootloader, different modems and csc i am looking for something a little more non generic. I first assumed this was the firmware / modem combo but after trying multiple ones this does not seem to be the case unless there is a long standing issue with the S4 and LTE.
As a future note to get the modem versions you dial *#1234# . More > About does not give you the full picture but thanks for those who tried to help
Hello.
I have a note 3 n9005 and when the network mode is WCDMA/GSM or LTE/WCDMA/GSM, my phone stays on GSM often. 3G signal is good in the area, and when I check my friends' phones, I find out their phones are on 3G network but mine is on 2G.
When I choose WCDMA Only, phone registers on 3G network and works without any problem. But switching back to auto connect, cause the phone to register on 2G again after some time.
So is there any configuration that tells the phone to stay on 2G if 3G signal is weak?
Please help if you can.
Thanks in advance.

The cell tower does this by signal quality, and most of the time distance dictates quality. I myself have asked around for AUTO 3G/4G only, but it seems like a subject where nobody has done any research.
Does your 3G signal differ from WCDMA only compared to Auto mode? If so, try updating to a newer firmware, could be a modem/baseband issue that may has been fixed in the mean time.
Technically it should grab the highest network of the three. So LTE has priority over WCDMA, which has priority over GSM. So even if WCDMA has one bar, and GSM 4, it should grab WCDMA until it completely loses that signal.
Have you tested another SIMcard in your phone? It may very well be a SIM problem.

You say it is fault of the cell tower?
So why phones of my friends are ok about this issue and register on WCDMA?
I flashed 3 different lollipop ROMs but nothing changed. ?

Yes. That's exactly what I expect my phone to act about switching between network types.
I never tested another SIM in my phone. So I will check that as soon as possible. I will post the result. Thank you.

Hello, i live in a relatively small town where my service provider has very poor 4G signal. but pretty good 3G signal. With the Axon 7 i have a lot of signal problems that i didnt have with any of my previous phones, where outdoor signal is pretty bad and indoor signal is almost unusable. It also connects almost exclusively to 4G, and in contrast all of my previous phones connected almost exclusively to 3G. Over the last weekend i traveled to a major city where my service provider has very strong 4G signal, and the signal problem was almost non existant. I even had signal in places where other people with the same service provider did not. So my theory is the following, assuming that the hardware (antenna) used for 4G and 3G is the same, it may not be a hardware problem, but a problem with the software having a hard time knowing which band/signal it should connect to. It seems that in my case it prioritizes 4G signal and the cost of a VERY unstable cellphone service. This is also assosiated with the fact that when it connects to 3G (incredibly rare), the phone goes inmediately from 1/2 bars to 4/5 bars. I also changed the SIM configuration to leave LTE out, but either for a visual bug or a software bug, it keeps connecting only to 4G. So could this be the problem that me and a lot of people in low 4G signal zones are having? Is there anyway i can force the phone to connect exclusivly to the 3G signal to test if that is indeed the problem?
Regards!

Without knowing which model Axon 7 you are using, where you are using it, and who your provider is, there is little anyone can do to help you. All I can say is that it helped me A LOT to go into settings and turn off
VoLTE.

U model last update, using it from Argentina, and the provider is Claro. I have LTE disabled in SIM confg as i already said and VoLTE turn of as well but the phone keeps connecting to 4G no matter what i do, even if i configure it to only GSM
I don't think its a matter of position or provider (version could be if different software is provided), but a general issue with the phone and band/signal interpretation coupled with the apparent innability to go off 4G
Refards!

ok when it connects to LTE it says "4G LTE". The 4G that you are getting is probably HSPA or something. And we had someone on here a few months back using Claro in Argentina and they had to seek answers from their Claro

If "4G LTE" is 4G and "4G" is HSPA, when only a "G" appears, what band am i connecting too? Its still pretty weird that im having major signal issues in my town, but when i go to a big city my signal is even better than other phones, it seems inconsistent with the whole "bad hardware" theory. I talked to Claro and it seemed like from their end it was a non issue, can you point me to the thread to see if he got it fixed somehow?

I'm always LMAO when I hear US people talking about that 4G scam (which is H+ for real btw)
G is for 2G
E is for 2G+
3G is 3G
H is 3G+
H+ is 3G++ (an intermediary protocol up to 42MBps)
4G is LTE (up to 150Mbps in the EU most of the time)
4G+ is LTE-A (which is available in most of the EU, SK & JP) - up to 600Mbps, 200MBps in most tests
I've not heard of an app that could modify the way the phone "clings" to 4G LTE, since that might likely be the modem firmware doing it on its own.

Then this is even weirder, because is G is not 3G, but 2G it means that the phone NEVER connects to the major band that all of my previous phones and Claro users connect to. Is there anyway to force to only connect to 3G?
Regards!
i have the G european model, in my town i have bad lte signal 1/2bar, when with my previously xiaomi mi4c was got 4/5 bars (maximum). In the big town i have got in the most of cases 4/5 bars. I think the "signal problems" are relatives of a lack of somehow software. i told this because i've read with the china model with the last updates an improvement of the signal reception of the phone.

You can however force a specific protocol indeed, but you will lack the ability to autoswitch networks. Just download 4G LTE Switch (here) which is a glorified secret code dialer. Just click on prefered network and change at your convenience (4G LTE only, WCDMA only - H+ - and so on). Remember that if you force 4G LTE in an area in which you have no coverage, you won't have internet, and no 2G/3G fallback (so no texts, no calls)
I don't know if this is the same problem, but my wife has an iPhone 6+ and I have an A2017U on B29 stock root. We both use the same network (Movistar Mexico) and while her iPhone often registers LTE, my A7 often registers 4G or even E in the same place. The A7 is receiving the same bands but appears to be "choosing" or locking into the slower protocols more often.
EDIT: NEVER MIND… an xposed module was messing with my network settings. Fixed it. Now I get LTE right away.
