Best Drivers for Razr - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The windows drivers I use.. (I think I got e'm from Motorola's site) constantly prompt me for permissions to access the phone when I plug it in to windows...
They bring up some stupid IE URL for Verizon "backup assistant plus" and video..
So what drivers can you use with the XT907 etc. that justs allows you to transfer files etc. with no headache? (ohh yah and these drivers bring up stupid extra prompts for file transfers)
So were clear to what I have... it shows Motorola Mobility LLC v6.3.0 in "programs" the Device Manager shows 2.4.5

bump.

super bump!

You should be able to see your phone in My Computer. Just treat it like a usb or external drive.
The drivers work in the background. They're not an actual application.

It's because you have the software set to automatically attempt a backup of your data when connected to a computer. All you need to do is find the program in your task bar and disable the auto backup setting.

Yep, that helped a lot hard to believe it was that easy or stupid.. but I still don't like the prompts the Motorola still brings up.. but yah the good news is I don't have a webpage opening every time I plug in my phone

I'm able to uninstall the annoying Moto program but keep the drivers with Win 8.

HOWTO: Tethering in windows 7 (no app needed!)

Step 1 - install Samsung drivers (instructions abound, run a search)
Step 2 - set to USB Debugging Mode
Step 3 - Plug in phone ;-)
Step 4 - hit the 'windows key' type 'phone' and click on 'Phone and Modem' when it pops up. Click on the 'Modems' tab.
Step 5 - Select the SAMSUNG ANDROID USB MODEM that shows a COM# next to it, and select properties. Click the 'Diagnostics' tab, then 'Query Modem' As long as it sends back 'Success', you can continue with the rest of this.
Step 5.1 Click the "Change Setting" button on the lower left corner of the dialog box, if your version of Windows 7 still has that.
Step 6 - Click the 'Advanced' tab, and insert
Code:
AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","epc.t-mobile.com"
into the extra initialization commands. Exit out of the Phone and Modem Dialog
Step 7 - Go to 'Internet Options' in Control Panel, and select 'Connections' tab.
Step 8 -Click 'Add...' button, and choose 'Dial-up'
Step 9 - Populate Phone Number with *99# Name with 'wap' and password with 'password' Name the connection whatever you like.
Step 10 - cross your fingers and click 'connect'
As long as Step 10 connects you to the internet, then you're good to go.
I left-click on the wireless icon in my toolbar to access the dialer, once it's setup there's a section for 'dialup' in addition to wireless
The only 'difficulty' I've had is that sometimes I have to unplug and replug the USB cable in order to start the networking - otherwise, it's been very stable, and I'm getting MUCH higher speeds than when using PDANet or Easytether, and I SEEM to be getting better battery life (laptop and phone) than using the Apps.
Like the OSX instructions, this SHOULD work without root, however, I've not tested it without root, so I don't want to promise anything ;-)
Thanks to MSW1382 for helping me clarify this set of instructions.

Just tested this out and it does work.
There are a couple things I would like to point out.
Before step 6, you must click the "Change Setting" button on the lower left corner of the dialog box.
Also in step 7, you are referring to "Internet Options" not Internet Properties.
Seems to be working ok so far. I am posting this using this method...
there is an easier way to tether without being rooted and using windows. if you download Samsung Kies, once you connect your phone(keeping in mind you need to go into the applications setting under setting and change your usb function to kies) in the Kies program, there is an option to tether. i have used this successfully several times now. its worth a shot if you dont want to go and alter any sort of setting on your comp
speeds
Thanks, it works perfectly.
Thanks. This works. I had easytether and that worked for a day, after which it kept disconnecting after a few minutes. This seems more stable but I don't know if it's just as fast or faster, but hey it works so I'm not complaining.

my mobiler needs the phone to be connected to the desktop with a usb cable. thats a turn off. and if a rom (such as some of the ics roms based off the leak rom) isn't supporting usb mount, then theres no use. webkey can be connected to your phone from any wi-fi connection, from any browser, from any pc.
Mymobiler was the ipso facto app for wm6.x to enable one to control ones phone via a pc.
many people were waiting for it to be ported to android. It does support wifi as well as USB connections. I'm fiddling with mine now, as it happens. (downloading webkey, never heard of that one so thanks. I'll have a fiddle with that one too. It looks far more complicated i.e My mobiler is exactly what is says. Your phone on your desktop. I do like the look of the GPS stuff in webkey though.. Still fiddling...)
Webkey... far too complicated. How many user names/passwords/registration of device with them even?

I agree with that, but it also depends on what requirements you got
little bit slow, but worth it a try
webkey is slow over the wifi. cant connect with usb. much trickier than mymobiler. Also much slower than my mobiler.
Actually, I agree. Hence, I've uninstalled it since discovering Airdroid. Its also free on the now Google Play Store (seriously though, Google Market sounds much better, I don't know what they were thinking.)
Its similar to webkey, but its more organized and has a better layout. And if you can't or don't want to connect via Wi-Fi you can tether it to your PC with a USB. You can control your Note from the browser as well. Definitely check this one out, much simpler to use. I don't like apps that restrict me to only be able to control my phone or act as a file manager with a cable. But this has both options.

[Q] Nook Simple Touch - all set up and it's partly fun

Hi all, recently bought one of these nice little devices myself. This is how I got on, not all that's supposed to work actually does.
Rooting with Touchnnoter 2.1.31 was easy enough and I soon found SearchMarket to access Android Market. What does work: Kindle, QuickPic, AdAway, DropBox, GoodNews
So I could be reading books and news, but I'd like to have a bit more, namely web access!
- ReadItLater/Pocket is shown as purchased in Market, but can't be installed
- Stock browser shows starting page as Error404, directly opening another page works first time only, but links or scrolling don't. Plus it often crashes.
- pre-installed Opera Mini didn't work, so I uninstalled and reinstalled:
a) only clicking "accept" REALLY fast allowed me to open it at all, otherwise it'd crash
b) spiegel.de and BBCNews always crash, even with images turned off I only briefly see the page layout
- Opera Mini Next doesn't open,
- Opera Mobile and Evernote are supposed to work, but don't appear on SearchMarket
- Dolphin Browser often crashes as well, plus no add-ons can be found
Any ideas why this is happening?
Plus: can anybody tell me how to access the external sdcard? I tried several file managers, activated root access etc. but have never been able to access /mnt/ or external_sd or emmc. So I haven't been able to sideload any apk either.
Thanks!
I use Opera Mobile, I found the apk somewhere (not on Market).
The SD card appears as /sdcard in the system (i.e. shell or ADB).
It is the second device mounted on the USB (i.e. desktop).
If you are writing an application you need the permission android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE.
There's also Instafetch as an alternative clipper.
Regards market errors, it's nice to do adb installs anyway, just a matter of getting hold of the .apk, possibly from AppBrain. OperaMobile (not to be mistaken with the lighter streaming OperaMini) works well for me. Perhaps there's a apk direct from Opera available.
It sounds like you have a problem with market. Perhaps adblock could be interfering? As I say, check out alternative ways to install in the interim.
The last couple versions of opera mini don't work but luckily I backed up my apps via airdroid and have a version that works. Readitlater/Pocket does not work because their recent updates have dropped android 2.1 support. Have you tried es file explorer? In ES you tap the home icon on the toolbar and select Phone the sdcard should then appear as a folder

I see both Opera Mobile and Evernote through SearchMarket.
Try to see if you can find Opera Mobile directly from Market (not SearchMarket)
Market -> App -> Communication -> Top Free
Opera Mobile is on the second page.
Alternatively you could go to Google Play on your desktop/laptop
and see if the Nook shows up on the devices (its called Phone).
Then install them on the website for the device, and a few seconds later you will see them install on the nook.

Browsing and installing from the webstore is definitely way faster than on the Nook.
Also, I use another app called Quick Search Widget. Launch it as an app or from the widget. It can search the Market, and also doubles as a Google/wikipedia/... search widget.
Wow, thank you all for your tips - quite a kick-start and steep learning curve!
SD card: my bad, as "sdcard" was available. But as I recently formatted this drawer on my SGS (wanting to format the external sdcard, but wiping the OS...) I was extra cautious. Settled.
I downloaded adb and installed apks, great! I still don't get it how to do this on the Nook itself. There's something in NookColorTools about the app having to be in /system/apps/ or else it won't work...
And I'm quite proud to have figured out why Market didn't work! There was something wrong with the content filter: although set to "all", a lot of apps were blocked. Having switched to "mature", I'm in business with Evernote and trying out Instafetch.
BTW: @Schneicw, you're the best! The working OperaMini.apk was the best birthday present (couple of days early)! You wouldn't happen to have an old ReadItLater.apk lying around as well?!?
Next, I'll give the ebooklauncher a shot. Fingers crossed!

You probably do not have install of Non-Market apps enabled.
Bring up NookColor Tools, and you will see check box with "Allow Non Market Apps". This might be checked (but still not working).
So you need to uncheck this box and recheck it.
Also try out remote install of apps from the google play website play.google.com/store/apps from a laptop (you need to login with the same account as on your nook), I find that really convenient...

I've got my Nook Simple Touch rooted with latest Touchnooter. The thing is, I don't want to use the Android Market at all. I want to install the F-Droid repository instead, as it has nothing but Free Software Apps, and has satisfied all my needs on my Droid phone, and I would prefer to keep as much of my data away from google as I can.
I have the FDroid.apk file. But I can't understand how to install it. I have the box (about allowing install of outside apps) in NookColor Tools checked. But I don't know how to get to the file on the SD card to start installing it.
What is this I've been hearing about installing with adb? Does that mean you can't just go to a file manager, select the apk, and begin installing? Because that is essentially how F-Droid installs its apps. Just does it all on its own, you just click "Install". But if that method doesn't work on the NST. Than F-Droid won't work
Any help would be very appreciated. God Bless ya guys!!
P.S. also the stock browser doesn't really work right. just goes to a black screen after a couple different web pages. And Opera (the one installed by Touchnooter) won't open at all. Just flashes the screen once, then stays on the home screen.
We really need a custom made CyanogenMod Rom!!! I get the feeling it would solve alot of our issues.

You should be able to connect the nook to your Windows machine and copy the .apk onto the sdcard.
For browser Opera Mobile works for me.
TouchNooter also has the Amazon Market, which you could use.

well as a first note, I would like to say I have no Windows machines at all. I am 100% Linux
But I already have the apk file on my SD card. Its just I have no idea how to get to the file to install it. I thought that the app "Super Manager" was a file explorer/manager of some sort. But it does the same thing as Opera, I click on the icon in the App drawer, and the screen just flashes once or twice. Then returns the the home screen. No thing saying that it has crashed or anything.
So that is where I'm stuck.
Also, as a side note, I wish to use the F-Droid repository, because I want to use nothing but Open Source (Also known as Freedom Based) Software. Including markets. It's the number one reason why I use nothing but Linux on my machines. Linux is also faster than Mac or Windows, but won't get into that can of worms right now. hahaha.
You could write your own file explorer Jk
adb install seems to be the way for you.
Google "ADB download install", there should be a ton of links.
However now you will have software created by google installed/running on
your linux machine. (ha ha).

Lol Well I have next to zero programming knowledge. But when I find the the best open source file explorer I'm definitely gonna throw the dev more than a few bucks for his hard work.
I'll look into adb installing for now. Just really hope and pray we get a Cyanogen or some other real Rom ported to NST soon. I think would solve all our issues with a totally different rom on it.
P.S. yes, having proprietary google software is gonna bug the crap outta me!! lol
God Bless ya guys!

W8 Metro Apps doesn't open

I have recently upgraded my windows 7 to windows 8 and have had lots of problems since that. Firstly I can't download/install lang packs. My laptop is from germany and I don't know how but when I upgraded to W8 it automatically changed to German and it doesn't give me an option to download/install any other language. [Solved]
Secondly, I can't open any apps. When I click on one, it loads a screen saying "App Preview" and then comes back to the Start metro interface. How do I at least fix that?

A friend of mine had exactly the same problem.
Finally, it ended up with a clean install of Windows 8.
It may sound crazy, but Metro apps need hardware acceleration. Install the latest Windows7 driver for you video card.
Most of the integrated drivers have hardware acceleration. I get this problem every so often, just keep opening it till it stays open.

thanks for that insightful post mate, moving along....
ive had issues with apps not opening, but as already mentioned trying a couple more times usually works. Im not convinced about sticking with the upgrade, if you have the space id suggest a fresh install WITHOUT deleting the partitions, the install wizard will copy all your old windows folders to a new folder called Windows.old.
You can then work through it coping all your files to the new OS and delete it when your happy.
everything you need will likely be in windows.old\users\username\
another good place to hunt about is windows.old\programData\
before you try all that, this is going to sound stupid but have you tried turning off your computer?,
yesterday Windows had updated some files in the background (WMC) my Mail App was refusing to sync with no errors at all, when I shut down the computer it came up that it was installing updates so I turned off the PC at the wall for a few min and when it rebooted it worked perfectly...
it's a common problem if you upgrade to win8.
Solutions:
1.) Do a clean install (no upgrade from win7 or other win8 beta)
2.) Fix it.
Save the below to a .reg file, execute it and restart your machine.
Code:

I have tried the regedit fix but that didn't work either.
I think it's a problem with the videocard driver, as when I upgraded, I couldn't open CCC anymore.
I'm trying to uninstall the driver to reinstall but I am facing some problems right now, the driver won't remove completely it appears and it won't let me update to the recent one.
Hey guys,
I have tried multiple clean installs of win8 (RP) because repeatedly the metro apps stopped opening after working fine initially. I was able to nail the problem down to kasperky internet security. I tried webroot internet security and things are working great.
Try it and trust me, it will work.
I don't think that is my issue here as I don't use any anti virus software other than MS Security Essentials.
Same issue here... Cut the rope and Weather will not work. Rest of apps do work. They all worked on Consumer preview... i did the upgrade to RC from there. I'm going to fresh install it next, but i was hoping i could work it out 1st.
It seems I managed to get the graphics card driver to work, CCC is now opening but still I can't get the apps to load. What now?
It's a common problem. I have trouble opening my apps too on multiple tries. It's not your display driver. Just keep opening the same app and eventually it will open.

download latest windows 8 developer preview it will work
No, it won't. The fix is the change to the Registry.
Microsoft themselves have no clue about the issue - they'll tell you it's a graphics driver problem, but that's wrong.
If the first Registry fix doesn't work, try this one in addition to the first:
(it might break your installation!)
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole]

-Open Charms Bar (Windows key + C)
-Select Settings ---> Change PC settings
-Open Ease of Accsess
-Turn off ----> Tab through webpages and app using care browsing
Now you can add gmail and much else that did not work.
None of the suggestions above seemed to work
I think I'll give up.

Set Phone to "File Transfer" Automatically on Data Cable Plug-in Using Automate Flow

Finally found a way to have your phone go to "File Transfer" mode automatically when the USB cable is plugged in! There's an Automate flow that does just this! You can download it here: https://llamalab.com/automate/community/flows/18022
The only caveat is that your phone has to unlocked before you plug it up. As in, you've got to put in your PIN, password, or pattern before plugging it up to your computer. Nevermind that last bit. See post #2.
I've tried it on my Windows PC and it works perfectly everytime. I'm not sure about Mac's.
Root is NOT required.
If you don't Automate, you can download it from Google Play here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.llamalab.automate&hl=en.
It's a very easy way to automate a great many things on your phone. It's got a visual interface that uses 'blocks'. That makes it easy to do complex task without having to have any knowledge of scripting. However, if you like scripting, you can do that as well for even more complex tasks.
I would imagine someone has done same with a Tasker script as well. I don't use Tasker, so I've not looked for it.
I've altered the _USB Mass Storage flow to automatically set the USB usage type to "File Transfer" after a reboot, or after you unlock your phone from a reboot, if you keep your phone locked.
The original flow only works when you're phone is already booted up and not locked. While that's super helpful, that's only part of what I needed.
When modding apks, I place the apk on my phone, reboot, then check and see if my mods worked. If not, I need to often immediately transfer another attempted apk to my phone, reboot, then check and see if my mods worked or not. If not, repeat that process. Anyone who's done any sort of dev work will understand how annoying it is to have to keep selecting File Transfer every time you're testing an apk or mod that requires a reboot, which may be 20, 30, 40, 50, 60+ times during one sitting.
This updated flow will make the phone automatically go to "File Transfer" mode after a reboot, or after you unlock your phone from a reboot, if you keep your phone locked.
There's a small delay, like 5 seconds.
Ideally, I would have liked to have just altered the one flow, but I couldn't figure out how to have it work both on boot, and work any other time as well. To that end, you'll need to use both the flow I linked in the first post AND this one. They can both be running at the same time without issue. This one runs only once at boot, the other flow runs any other time the phone is plugged in.
You can download the flow from the Automate Community here: http://llamalab.com/automate/community/flows/20646
Updated the flow in the Automate Community.
The original zip I posted didn't take into account rebooting while the phone was not connected to a computer, and so it would keep checking the notification over and over because there was none. Eventually, the log file would get to big and the flow would "crash."
v2 of this zip fixes that.
You can do it in Android https://www.addictivetips.com/android/how-to-set-the-default-usb-connection-type-in-android-6-0/

You don't seriously think I've gone through all this trouble when the solution was that easy, do you?
That article is BS for two reasons:
1. - PTP ONLY gives you access to your DCIM and Pictures folders. Neither of which are folders I usually need or want access to.
1.5 - MTP does give you full access, but... see reason #2.
2. - Even if #1 wasn't an issue, which it is, that setting doesn't stick after a reboot, which is my main gripe and specifically the reason for the flow I posted in the second post.

Yes looks like they reset the config after connection, since Android 6.0. Very good reason why, and maybe worth considering. It was to stop your phone being attacked by the Bad USB security vulnerability. Plug phone into a bad USB hub or device and auto enable MTP, it could be attacked and would be giving full access. Circumventing security on the OS will always be a trouble.

Thanks for this, a convenient automation!
I'm having trouble "Importing" the flo file
as it does not accept it so I have to cancel the
"Import" and get back to the main page again!
Any suggestion?

You have to save the flow to Google Drive first. Did you do that?

I've uploaded it to the Automate Community. http://llamalab.com/automate/community/flows/20646
If that link takes you to a download page and you're still having trouble importing that download, just search for "USB Mass Storage After Reboot" in the Automate Community via the Automate app.
