Introduction to the thread
I have the intt. note 2 - n7100 and i had not updated it for a very long time due to laziness of mine and i was still with the stock 4.1.2 stock, rooted , twrp and superSU installed. I recently decided to update my phone to either 4.3/4.4.2 , so i researched a bit and came to know about the bootloader confusion among several note 2 users. i also found out all the information was scattered and consumed a lot of time to grasp all the information . So i decided to make this thread to help other user and save their time.
What is a bootlader?
It is the first piece of code that is excuted and it boots the O.S into the ram.
How to identify ur bootloader version?
One can find bootloader version with this "INFO APP" https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.app.info , u will find it under the "OPERATING SYSTEM" option.
How does samsung no the bootloader version?
They are named alphabetically . So nd3 is the newest followed by mj 5 and oldest being the lk6 . Also this is only a random order there are many in between version which have been released , but i am giving a general view
NOW COMES THE IMPORATANT STUFF
There are two types of bootloader for note 2
1-Non-knoxed bootlader- these are bootlader earlier to version mj5 including the mj5 version
2 -Knoxed bootlader- these are the one released after mj5 ]
what is knox all about?
It is according to samsung the "latest security feature which protect ur device. basically a normal user should only know that it to keep check on those who modify their device .
the knox has a number counter which gets from default 0*0 to 0*1 if any ony tries to modify their device by either rooting or flashing custom stuff like rom or any custom recovery.
FOR USER UNDER WARRANTY/ OR WHO CARE FOR WARRANTY - should see that they do not upgrade to newer than mj5 otherwise they will have a knoxed bootlader and it will increse the counter if u try to modify it and so ur warranty will be void.
a)Recommended for Touchwis based
- 4.1.2 - whatever stock b.l version u are having is fine
4.3.x - mj5 (to avoid wifi issues plz flash mj5 anything lower than that will cause wifi issues)
4.4.x - mj5 (but u wont be able to charge ur phone will its swithched off){if u want to charge ur phone while its switched off u . have to flash latest nd3 b.l but that will void ur warranty}
b)Recommended for AOKP, CM ,PACMAN , paranoid ..........
4.1.2 , 4.3.x ,4.4.x - mj5 will work with all rom of all verion
FOR USER WHOSE WARRANTY PERIOD IS OVER / OR WHO DO NOT CARE FOR WARRANTY - u can flash any bootloader upto the latest which being the nd3 one.
a)Recommended for touchwis based
- 4.1.2 - whatever stock b.l version u are having is fine
4.3.x - mj5 (to avoid wifi issues plz flash mj5 anything lower than that will cause wifi issues)
4.4.x - nd3(if u upgrade to nd3 u wont be able to downgrade to 4.1.2 rom , but u can still install 4.3 based rom)
b)Recommended for AOKP, CM ,PACMAN, paranoid ..........
4.1.2 , 4.3.x ,4.4.x - mj5 will work with all rom of all version
Rcommended recovery - twrp/philz
Always update ur recovery to latest to avoid any issues
plz read all information above carefully i am not in anyway responsible for any damage to ur device. try at ur own risk.

No not in all cases mj5 fits ,bcoz if one's
warranty-already-void OR/ dosent-care-for-warranty
and
is willing to flash android 4.4.2
must go with the nd3 bootloader b,coz it being the latest and greatest and will not have any issues of charging while switched off.
In every other case the mj5 fits

First of all thankyou so much for presenting the bootloader stuff in pretty easy way. This really made the thing clear to me. I have two questions:
The bootloader of my Note-II is LJ3. I am planning to flash France 4.4.2 update on my phone. Should I update the bootloader to ND3 first? Secondly if in future I think of rooting my phone, will ND3 be working all good? Or will I need the MJ5 bootloader to have WIFI bug free experience on CM, AOKP roms?

1- If u are going for 4.4.2 stock rom like CM,AOKP etc then i suggest u to flash the mj5 from odin as it is the last bootloader release which does not has knox and will work well according to ur current requirement.
2- yes u can root ur phone on nd3 but if u are still under warranty u will void ur warranty when trying to root on nd3 bootoader as it is a knox enabled bootloader , so any attempt to modify will result in tripping of knox so warranty will be void.
So if u want to keep ur warranty intact then mj5 will be best .
hoping that clears ur doubt.

Hi all,
Myself new into S4 forum. I bought one second hand (previously used) Galaxy S4 I9500. When i got the phone, it's having the SuperSU app installed on it. So i hope its having root access. For confirming root access i installed root browser and checked whether i can see the system files. I confirmed :highfive:
So my phone is rooted. Isn't right guys ? (i previously owned sony phone, so am making all my doubts clear)
Then i asked in noob's QA section for checking boot-loader status and i found my system status as following in the download mode.
CURRENT-BINARY : Custom
SYSTEM STATUS : Custom.
This means my phone has unlocked boot-loader . I just want to confirm whether i am right or not, thats why i am writing all these
I tried to update via Phone, it says my Phone has been modified. There is NO updates. :crying:
And about the recovery,i found the Android System Recovery in there. (Probably Not a custom Recovery)
My Current phone Status is

The build shows I9500UBUBMG1: means some foreign region(Uruguay) update and i am from INDIA, Is it weird ?
So coming to my actual topic question, (there is a lot of questions )
1.How can i update to latest version with my current system?
2.What is MODEM and Knox mean ? (just a short answer)
3.Is it possible to update my phone to any region update ?
4. If i need to install custom ROM's, how can i do that ? ((Suggest Recoveries if any))
5. Can i go back to original official system(no root and no custom recovery), i mean remain in warranty ?
Seeking for Solutions eagerly, i hope someone will help me out.
FAQ threads are making me mad. Once i get a basic idea, i'll catch up.
Regards
Ajith

1. Download Odin and download the lastest firmware in your region
2. Not sure Google it but be specific on what kind of modem is it a router of a program its used etc
3. Yes but I'd advise not to as your WiFi or something else may not work etc.. but you can give it ago if you wish
4. Download the latest Odin and Google your build or ask on here and they'll point you to the correct firmware, also watch a few Youtube video on how to use Odin its quite easy.
5. I'm guessing you can as I've done it to mine just delete any traces of it being rooted such as old folders etc...

Hi ! Si for respond to you Yes you can do the update ! And the best i suggest you is to installed a custom rom ans to prêter if you prêter Touchwizz (Samsung's Android version for make it simple).
Yes you can go back to official statut useful if One day you have to go back to S.A.V etc You will have juste to use Triangle away it s an application for supress the foot etc.
Or simple flash a stock rom (official firmwire from Samsung).
No on Samsung phones the bootloader are ALWAY unlocked contrary to Sony LG etc it s also for that that it s Very easy to pût them in custom.
I suggest you the Échos rom the best based on Touchwizz. It had ben updated recently to Android 4.3 with la test modem (MJ5).
Seek for the mos récent version of Your MoDem for Your country (the 2 lettres after the 9500??/9505??).
Download Odin for beginning ans make sûre that Kies us completely desactivated ! Make all drivers installer Aldo (the ones for Your s4 meaning).

Newer builts bring newer BL and that must have a reason or two
Not even more Knox security but also any kind of improvement in performance too?
Upgrading the BL is something to gain or to avoid?
Please no comments about warranty, that's not the topic, thx.

There will be a number of reason for sammy to update the bootloader. Performance, stability, security, compatability.
MJ5 is the last boot loader that wont void warranty, being one of the reasons its the one people mainly use. Anither reason is that it can be downgraded, bootloaders newer than mj5 cannot be downgraded. Mj5 is stable and works well but if you nit interested in warranty and want the very latest bootloader go ahead and install the latest stock from sammobile, bear in mind that once youve done that then you will not be able to return to mj5 dmg1 or anything lower than mk4 I believe. Hopefully if you have any signal issues one of the newer bootloaders mk4 or above will fix your problem, mk9 should. Mk9 was mass released and is the one im using. But if mj5 is working just fine and your warranty is intact then theres no reason to go newer. Personally ive voided my warranty now and im using stock voda uk mk9 atm
How is the Bootloader related to
* Signal
* Performance
It's a bootloader. It performs boot-time operations! To the best of my knowledge, it performs no run-time operations.
Can you please elaborate, tonylee000?

Haha yes I got lost in my line of thought. Basically to upgrade your bootloader youd install one of the newest stock roms that come with the BL you want to try, this also would bring with it the latest baseband etc etc so would have your phone upto date with the latest driver etc.
Im sure theres pribably a flashable file somplace so you can upgrade just the bootloader but thats nit something ive found. I dont know if you can simply extract the BL fle from a sammobile download and flash that by itself? Why would you, if you wabt the very latest you flash the while thing hey. Saferoot and superuser along with wanam do a great job at closing down knox
the kernel is more important than the bootloader, the kernel 'talks' with the bootloader and the rom.
an incompatible bootloader in combination with the mismatched kernel will influence many things like - wifi not working, triggering knox, phone in bootloop, phone rebooting into rom when being charged etc etc
bootloaders should be upgraded for optimum performance
but companies - those who release them have agendas of their own and then workarounds are sought

The bootloader contains 3 files.
Sboot.bin -- Used only for boot purpose
Param.bin & TZ.img -- Used for communication with the kernel and I think for wifi connection.
Param.bin and Sboot.bin are responsible for everything related to knox and trusted boot sequence.
Afaik newer bootloader really improves wifi connectivity.
When you open up the wifi patch provided by Dr. Ketan for runnig 4.3 custom roms on older bootloaders it contains param.bin and tz.img from the MJ5. So I guess these two files manage connectivity and kernel interface which improves stability.

Hi,
i have a galaxy note 3 n9005 , when i bought this phone,my android was 4.3, after i update my phone via odin (without select bootloader update option in odin) to android kitkat 4.4.2 poland NB3 , and now i flash my phone to ND3 holand via odin and without select bootloader update...
i use odin 3.09 and official roms.
my knox is 0x0.
now, i have a question.
when i need to select bootloader update in odin?
Android OS and android system battery usage is too high ( about 25% android system and about 18% android OS).. is this mentioned to bootloader update?
When there's a huge update which cause rom not boot up coz u never update the bootloader.
Hehehe. Basically when u jump over from different version example 4.3 to 4.4, yes u need update bootloader.
As long as ur rom can bootup shld be no problem.
But if u update from ota, normally the bootloader will be flashed together, as samsung as much as possible wants all to apply new patch on the bootloader.
The android os and system usage is high, due to all crap and bloatware.
But, with this on top, battery usage still acceprable.
U can remove or disable all that bloatware. That's what I do.

yes i download roms from samsung-updates.com and update via odin.
how can i find my bootloader updated or not?
If u want newest bootloader, since u r on nd3, and never choose to update bootloader, means u r still on the old bootloader.
If u still want to update the bootloader, u can go to alexndr rom, find the 1st post, there's a separate file for the bootloader itself.
Download and flash it through odin, at pda/ap, don't change any option, connect phone in download mode, click start.
It will finish in seconds.

You don't have to select the "update bootloader" option in odin, it's useless. When you flash a stock FW, BL will get updated regardless of whether you have that option chosen or not.
When I upgraded to kitkat I flashed just the BL and didn't select that option and bootloader was upgraded without any issues. I helped 5 or 6 others update to KK(some flashed just the BL and others the full FW) and they didn't select that option either and the BL was updated..

When I upgraded to kitkat I flashed just the BL and didn't select that option and bootloader was upgraded without any issues. I helped 5 or 6 others update to KK(some flashed just the BL and others the full FW) and they didn't select that option either and the BL was updated..

csc version: N9005PHNEND1
Best regards
i new on android ... now i using galaxy note 2 ...
the problem phone is got super user ... what i know is my phone was root ...
can i unroot it ??? because i wanna upgrade it to kitkat if can ...
please someone help me ... new on android ...
which country firmware i need to download ???
will my phone brick if i download wrong firmware ???
If you want to unroot fully download triangle away to reset your counter and run it then uinstall superuser. That's pretty much it if you are on stock with stock recovery. If not you can flash stock through odin and it will be back to factory. There is a stock 4.4 prerooted 4.4.2 available which you could flash without needing to unroot

I know it might all sound too overwhelming cause that's how i felt when i was in your situation but reading a lot of threads and gaining as much knowledge i somehow understood what i needed to proceed ahead and flash newer custom ROMS,since you are 4.1.2 and rooted in order to upgrade to 4.3 or 4.4.2 custom roms you don't need to unroot or use triangle away, all you need is custom recovery (philz touch 6.26.0 or twrp 2.7.0) ,you need mj5 bootloader(i'll explain about bootloader in detail below ) and last but not the least backup your current 4.1.2 stock rooted ROM as well as EFS partition. You can visit dr ketan's thread on how to back up your efs incase your imei goes corrupted chances are rare but it has happened with people so backing up EFS is must. Now after you have taken care of 4.1.2 ,you can proceed with flashing a custom ROM,since you want to flash 4.4.2 there are several deknoxed, dedoxed and pre rooted ROM's available by developers and they are just like stock samsung ROM.
Now comes the tricky part and it depends on an individual how he goes about bootloader part. Since you are on 4.1.2 stock rooted ROM your bootloader is outdated, there are few 4.3 Jellybean bootloaders but MJ5 bootloader is the BEST cause it's deknoxed ,meaning it won't void your warranty so even if you upgrade to 4.4.2 you can always go back to 4.1.2 stock ROM ,unroot your phone ,reset the flash counter via triangle away and then take it to service center. If you flash MK4/MJ9 bootloaders which is built in if you officially upgrade to 4.3 you'll be KNOX ,so when you root your phone knox will be triggered and warranty will be null, there's NO WAY currently to reset knox once its triggered. There are no benefits of knox but samsung has its own theory of implementing it for security purposes. Also one cannot downgrade back to 4.1.2 if they flash a knox bootloader you'll be stuck on 4.3 or 4.4 roms
So let's say you flash mj5 bootloader ,then flash the kitkat ROM from one of the links available on xda only draw back being on 4.3 jellybean bootloader (whether its mj5/mk4/mj9) you cannot charge your phone when turned off when on samsung touch wiz kitkat ROM.Kitkat bootloader is available but it's KNOXED which as stated earlier knoxed bootloader will void your warranty but you'd be able to charge your phone when turned off.
I know this is a lot of information at once for you to understand but main thing you should worry about is backing up EFS partition and which bootloader you choose, once you take care of those two things, ROM flashing is easy if you follow the correct steps on how to flash it (mainly making sure you clean your internal memory of phone clean).I am on mj5 bootloader and just this morning i flashed 4.4.2 ROM and everything is running smoothly,no fc no bootloop nothing.
Hi all,
there is a new app for rooting phones, the name is Towelroot and it was made especially for Verizon Glaxaxy s5 but the dev says that every phone with kernel build date < 3 June can be rooted.
With this app you can root Galaxy S4 Mini with kitkat firmware without tripping knox counter. It will stay 0x0 and you will have root access.
First of all you must put a vulnerable kernel with build date <3 june
you can grab one from [INDEX] Official Stock KERNEL collection for Galaxy S4 Mini (Kernel for I9195XXUCNF7 is the one you have to grab to work with towelroot, offcourse if you own an i9195 )
Flash it via odin. Leave everything intact and load the kernel to AP.
After the phone boots, install towelroot, press makeitra1n and you are rooted.
Next step is to install SupserSU from google play.
After all the above steps are done, flash the kernel from your firmware the same way as you did it the first time.
There you go, knox 0x0 and root access.

Ooohhh - this is tempting
towelroot did not work for 4.2.2. latest stock for my German device. Can you tell which is your firmeare and if German is a supported language?
I think KNOX should NOT be tripped if you only upgrade to official FW (i.e. kernel and recovery builds have valid checksums) - so how did you get KNOX tripped earlier - for CWM based rooting?
I have latest official stock 4.4.2. which I think is for Belgium, but as far as I know it's the only one that has already came out. German language is fully functional and supported. I live in Greece and Greek language is also supported. I think that official Roms are multilingual

How can you be sure that the root explot worked from towelroot and not from your actions earlier tripping KNOX?
You have already a custom recovery and custom ROM - this would not be possible without bootloader having KNOX triggered. So I guess that with this price paid you have already rooted the "regular" way - didn't you?

Another thing with upgrade is that you may loose your installed apps.
I remember this from my first steps with Xperia Ray some years ago, but this could also have been due to unlocking the bootloader and installing a custom kernel. Back that time I was not so knowing about what should be done in the process of unlocking bootloader, CWM recovery install and finally rooting. I may have scratched data partition that time without knowing what it actually means - and without it being needed as well.
Is this the case here as well? Non-root means no Nandroid backup and so what happens to the data-partition in this process?

Finally to all who want to dare testing:
It is highly unlikely that KNOX would be tripped here. As far I understand the process of image integrity that KNOX tries to maintain, the booloader checks if the image checksum of the kernel or recovery partition is intact - at upgrade time (not runtime at boot?). The towelroot exploit is compromising kernel security (aka "exploit") with some instructions (lib\armeabi\libexploit.so) to gain root and retain that state across the re-boot process. I am not aware of the details how this can be achieved (this is real high-tech hackery) - but the towelroot exploit does NOT install SU on system partition yet - this has to happen in a second step - and failed with 4.2.2 stock ROM on my GT-I9195.
So if there is anyone out there with just upgraded 4.4.2 and confirmed non-rooted - please check if you can get root with this method!
EDIT 20140705: Towelroot does NOT make the reboot in case of successful root. It gets you root in the same session immediately after you click "make it ra1n". So there is no reason why/how KNOX could be tripped. I did root my device with this method and still have KNOX intact (I just checked again to be sure). I have in the meantime made some changes to the /system folder, e.g. removed the photo-click sound, freed some space by removing the japanese language files for text-to-speech (gives you 25MB) and inserted all the updated system apps back to the system (did not ODEX them and removed classes.dex from the .apk - so they are all larger than the ODEXed originals). Also I moved out Google+ from System to be regular app.

well maybe i wasn't so clear. i was on CM m7 snapshot, then flashed through odin the samsung's 4.4.2 firmware. after that my root privilages were gone(as i presume, flashing the new firmware formats system, and installs new one) and i was left with plain stock firmware. checked with root checker, tried with titanium, tried with ES file explorer to remove anything from system partition but this was a no-go. so NO root after installing 4.4.2. installed towelroot, run the app and after 15 or so seconds, the phone rebooted and root privileges were back on! track!
with ES and Titanium i removed all of the knox related stuff with absolutely no problem. i read in the towelroot app's that SU app is not installed and i manually installed it from chainfire's thread. that's all i did.
the knox warranty 0x1 was triggered loooooooooong ago, and thankfully i haven't need the waranty for the time being...
hope it helps
There are several testimonials that this don't trip KNOX on S5.

Here are some screenshots for those who don't believe KNOX is not triggered:
What about Verizon S4 mini, anyone can confirm it.
This doesn't work for me. It just reboots my phone. It's an unbranded european S4 mini LTE.
I'm on 4.2.2 and I read before someone couldn't root with it on 4.2.2, and I'm not sure I can update it to 4.4.2 because
1) I tried flashing it before and it says i have an unofficial rom (or kernel, can't rememebr which) which in the end I don't have... edit "updates are not available because your device had been modified".
2) I'm not sure the update has rolled out for France. Edit : It hasn't, according to Sammobile. Only Belgium. I'll try to update through Odin and get back to you. In the mean time, feel free to make any suggestion to resolve the issue! Thanks

You have to upgrade with Odin.
But don't do it if you're in the old bootloader

if it says that the updates are not available because your device has been modified, it means that you are rooted. you have to install supersu separretly.
this exploit was meant for all kernel built before 3 june, so it will work on your device.
Dear friends, now we have learned to put ROOT using TowelROOT without a computer, and that's a great application with which you can easily install and Rekoveri kernel (Kernel and Recovery) in the form *. Img files. You can also do a pre-backup.
