My Galaxy S5 was experiencing extreme battery drain, even while not in use and in my pocket.
After a bit of searching, it turns out I'm not alone. So I thought I'd share my potential fixes to this problem. Your solution may be different to others, so try each one until you find your battery works as good as it should, like mine now does.
Attached is what my battery drain looks like after these 3 tips, even during heavy use.
If you have any extra possible solution, then please post them.
Problem: Android 4.4.2 bug: When location is enabled it causes extreme battery drain. Because it doesn't let the phone sleep.
Solution: Turn off location services until a patch is released.
Problem: Quick Connect not allowing the phone to sleep.
Solution: Root your phone, and either delete or move the APK files: QuickConnect.apk & QuickConnectInteraction.apk from /system/app to somewhere else, such as a disabled folder.
Problem: Skype bug causing battery drain.
Solution: Uninstall Skype until a patch is released.
Hmmm that's strange, my S5 has the best battery life i've ever had on a phone.
I'm pretty sure you turn on the Always ready to connect in Quick Connect that causes thw device unable to sleep.

That wasn't working for me. No matter what I did, my battery was being demolished so that I had 50% 3 hours off-charge. Now I get so much more.

I was getting the battery drain and slow charging. Removed and reinstalled Google Search and that fixed the battery charging. I couldn't figure out the battery drain so I simply factory resetted it and it has been great since. I am at 30 hours since my last charge and still have 50% to go, with light use.

You say removing the Google Search fixed you problem with the slow charging of your device ?!? I have noticed that my device charges very slow connected to an USB3.0 port...it only charges with 450mA.

Backlight keys use very little power
I also use a lockscreen that changes backgrounds (Travel Wallpaper) and have gestures on at all times and my last charge lasted 48 hours and still had juice left . Although what you mentioned above might impact battery drain but only a little and wouldnt cause you to seek answers for poor battery life .Best solution is see whats keeping your phone awake (wakelock)

That can be right, most USB 3.0 ports on laptops and computers do not provide more than 500mA.
For fast charging always use the wall charger. When using the original charger that came with your phone and the original cable (USB 3.0 compatible) your device can pull the full 1800 mA from the charger, since it can sense that the charger is able to handle this safely. When you use a USB 2.0 compatible cable it will only pull 1200 mA from the charger, even if it's an original Samsung wall charger.
I had serious battery problems with my S5 too, battery drained within 8-16 hours. After I removed Skype problems seemed to be solved.
I've had the same problem battery drain only 15 hours I have turned few wifi settings off
Smart network - off
Keep wifi on during sleep - changed to only when plugged in (would have thought this would be default)
Always allow scanning - off
network notifications - off
Hope this helps someone last 2 hours only lost 1-2%

Ok. I am using now this kernel ktoonsez KT-SGS5 and with a normal USB2.0 cable I get 1000mA from my USB3.0 port and get 1800mA from my wall charger.

Cool, that means in this kernel some of the original power management restrictions have been removed. It would be interesting to see if the limit on charging via the contact points on the back of the phone (used for Qi wireless charging and by car mounts like Mountr that use inductive charging) now als can accept more than 750 mA...

Hey guys,
First of, YES I USED THE SEARCH FUNCTION .
My battery life is absolute horrid right now, and I tried everything.
I tried out different roms, every radio, deleting programs, hard resetting tons of times. I even bought a new 1500 mAh battery but it was still crap.
Battery log says my device in standby mode with the screen turned of uses -70ma, when I turn my screen up it jumps to -320ma, and when idle on the screen for a few sec it goes to -200 ma, but when I browse through stuff again it goes to 3xxma again. When I surf on the internet it picks up to 450-500ma.
Now, this morning with the 1500 mAh battery fully charged I played a few games of XTRAKT, few texts, 1 hour of music listening and 10 minutes of being on Opera through a HSDPA connection. It was down to 45%.
This isn't the normal rate the battery goes down at right?
I use HDtweak to manage my connection and put it off after a minute so it isn't that I keep dataconnections open. I never use bluetooth or wifi either.
Could it possibly be that it's the charger of the device? I perhaps have the feeling that it doesn't put enough juice into the battery even though the green light led goes on to indicate it's full.
Some feedback would be much appreciated cause it's put me on the edge of selling my device, which would be a shame cause I'm really fond of it (except the battery ofcourse ).
Thanks in advance!

P.s. I am from a pda background, so it isn't that I'm expecting too much of the device or comparing it to a normal cell.
May I ask what you searched, as there are 3 or 4 active threads on battery drain right now?
Hi
Had same problem.
Try to browse a storage card if its very slow You must format it and it will back to normal.
very strange but its working.

General battery drain yes, not the possible issue of a charger though. If I'm wrong I stand corrected. .

Hi Antrak,
Touch HD has the longest battery life of any similar 'phone. See e.g.
http://www.pcauthority.com.au/News/1...-the-rest.aspx.
Either your battery is not charging correctly, as you say (try it via the PC USB cord?), or you have two dud batteries in a row (very unlikely) or you have a bug in your m/board. 70mA in standby is too high. It should be <20mA with only the 'phone on in standby mode, providing you are not moving from one cell to another all the time, and have decent signal.
One other suggestion. Drain the battery completely to zero, then recharge it to max. This should reset the internal battery meter. But don't do this too often, as it ages the battery faster.
If none of these work, return the 'phone for a m/board replacement undere guarantee.
I have the same problem... After charging for 10 hours, my batt shows 55% only.. and last 1hr on STANDbY!!!
IMAGINE! charge for 10hrs juz to get to use for 1 hr.. im disappointed by the batt.. im not sure if HTC is gona let me exchange with a new one or do I have to buy a new batt..
try check your sync..its active all the time or not..
if yes..
find the threat to make a fake account for sync, so you can active it manually.
so your battery will stand more longer,
about charging..
me also facing the same problem..
need to change it more longer to get full battery,
but
if i change in my car,
no issue
very fast
i thing charger issue..
but i bought original set..

Okay I've charged my HD through my pc with a USB cable and formatted my SD card like a other user said. Gonna see how it holds out today. It could very well be that some chargers have issues.
My experience with the Touch HD says that when charged with a USB attached to a computer the battery life is a lot shorter than charged through a wall socket.

This is always going to be the case. Quickest way to charge your device will always be through your wall socket and with your device turned off!!
Same battery issue.
i recently purchased a new touch HD (T8285 telstra version) and am experiencing the same horrible battery issues. it takes more time to charge it, than i get use out of it.
i've tried multiple batteries, and am in the process of trying different ROMs.

Indeed, here's an illustration...
Image1:
Charging via USB takes longer. Consumption and therefore charge current is erratic after the battery level reaches 50% when charging via USB on my HD. So the battery fills up to about 60% of its capacity by the time when the battery level is reported to be 100% and charging stops.
Image2:
When charging with an AC adapter this is not happening and the capacity is fully utilized. This is also quicker.

That's strange. For me it's quicker if the device is turned on. When it's off it takes around 8-10 hours to charge but when it's on it's alot quicker.

If your device is on there is always power outage especially with programmes running, whilst if your device is off, there is no power drainage so device should charge quicker.
What rom are you using? software installed?

Latest official rom with alot of software installed. But it doens't make sence to me either. It's logical for something to charge faster when it's using no power (off) then when it is using power (on).
Combine battery threads ???
Hi to Moderators,
There are now several threads on the HD forum on battery and charging issues.
Can these be combined into one place and stickied, so we can get a clear picture?
Current threads are this one, plus:

I have a gut feeling from what I'm reading, that HTC have had a bad batch of batteries or charger circuits in the HD - in which case the best starting point is to call their service points and ask for help/replacement, instead of spending lots of time on other remedies. The symptoms described have lots of commonalities, and the HD is normally an excellent beastie for battery usage.
Thanks for all your help, ladies and gents! Your work is much appreciated.

Heya,
Don't know what it is but my battery life increased a tad. Am running Dutty's X3.0 with the 1.32.x.x. radio. Watching a 1 hour xvid dvd rip (no conversion) in coreplayer on full backlight with no HSDPA on, wifi or bluetooth takes away 20% of my battery, which is acceptable.
Don't think it's the SD card format though, it might be that I never have the activesync process on anymore by setting it to manual update and closing it (it otherwise keeps running.)

hey guys.
lately my Hero seems to be draining battery like crazy at night when the phone is on stand-by. i have the villainrom 10.3 ROM installed, and during the night the only app that was running was "clock". no wifi or mobile network turned on, no GPS etc, and were talking 45-50% battery drain for 8 hours with the phone in stand-by.
why is this happening?
I had the same problem yesterday. In 5 hours my battery drained 80%, so I closed all the apps that was running, but still no change. I then restarted my phone, and after that, it looks normal, but will update if it does it again.
Hope someone has an answer...
Firstly, have you recently flashed a rom and when doing so hard your phone on charge?
If so you will need to run a procedure to reset your battery.
Either
Discharge down to around 5%, go into recovery wipe batt stats, then charge to full with it powered off
or
Charge to full with power on, then power off and charge until green light again. Then wipe batt stats and boot and continue normally.
If you have not flashed a rom recently then this is unlikely to be the issue and something else will be draining your power, e.g. an infinite sync?
Thanks, will try that
thanks lenny, yeah i recently flashed to villainrom but i do believe the problem started a few days prior to it, will try to reset the battery.
how can i check the infinite sync problem?
either by reading a logcat or checking to see if the sync icon is always on and never seems to go away.
Best practice is to untick everything you don't need to sync in the sync menu.
Allrightyroo, I don't see the sync icon and I think all the syncs I do are manually. Did the battery wipe now, I'll see if it helps.
Btw, is there any difference in charging thru USB or wall socket? I might be biased but I feel I get better battery performance when charging with wall socket..

It will charge quicker from a wall socket but it won't be any better.
Well, I've tried everything but it still drains up to 50% battery during the night, avg. 8 hrs or something. Have turned off background data and sync, wiped battery stats, recharged the way Lennyuk explained etc etc.
what the hell is wrong? My Hero is unusable if I have to charge it as often as this.

Reflash / change ROM.
And about USB or wall socket. There is big difference. USB gives only 500mA, when the wall socket gives is 1000mA. Feel any difference? Do not charge you battery by USB too often.
P.S.
Check with task killer whats on when you go to sleep. Try to kill tuchflo before standby.

Well, IMHO there is difference, because of we have double ammount of ampers, with the same voltage. Charging with USB is slower, and may charge battery not to 100% (even if phone is saying it is 100%). Ofcourse it will not damage your battery if you use USB.
i had this problem prior to flashing to VillainROM 10.3, i used Modaco 3.2 up until then. checked my taskkiller and nothing was using battery other than "clock".
Do you have the calender widget on your home-screen? That widget is draining the battery like hell. Had also the same problem after i've added the calender widget to my homescreen.... after removing it, everything was normal.
yes i do actually, will remove it and see if there's a difference.
Try removing auto-sync or the calendar sync because if i remember well there is an issue with that with a few roms..
Removed the widget and had 54% battery for atleast two hours now, seems to be the root of the problem.
Can someone explain the uptime and awake time? When I checked my Hero this morning after 9hrs of sleep it said
Up time: 20h 48 min
Wake: 2h 39min
and this is without touching the phone for 9 hrs.

Up time is the time the phone's been on.
Wake time is the time when you have been using the phone (screen on). When you turn the screen off, wake time should stop until you turn the screen on again. If wake time still goes up even when the screen's off, then there must be some application preventing your phone from sleeping.
Yeah, and that is kinda strange since "clock" was the only open application during that period. What does it say on your Heroes when you press the sleep button and then wake it up and check battery stats? 10 sec?

I was going so far because of this problem, that i asked htc about a new battery, after i told them that the calender was the source of this problem i asked if they will update it, but i didn't got a clear response... in the end in the response was nothing standing... well maybe they got it with the 2.1 update
Last night I left my phone charging over night. This morning once I took ot off the charger the battery was reading one percent. I went ahead and put it on the charger thinking the mini USB cable connected to the charger (att OEM charger) might have slipped off. Well after charging it from my car for another 30 minutes it was still reading one percent battery. I went ahead and reset my phone and voila it registered as fully charged. The weird thing is that while it was in critical battery mode the phone was performing very slow. Just wondering if anyone ejse has experienced that.
Battery issue?
I had the same problem when I checked my phone this morning. I had it on the USB cable almost all day yesterday and I showed a full battery when I when I went to bed. This morning I had 1% battery. I am charging now on the USB cable again and it does seem to be charging so we'll see.
Tony
I don't know how windows manages their memory on this os. I know they said they wouldn't have multi tasking but thus far I have realized that they do allow some apps to run in the background. I know in previous windows os the biggest issue was apps staying on in the background and eating up memory . So I hope the battery issue and the lagging isn't a direct result from that .
The battery on my phone charges but seems very slow.
Well, i have GPS turned off, wifi off and it takes about 2 hours to charge with the screen being off. i get about 3+ days of normal use from a fully charged battery. Maybe you have many things turned on and as such the phone us using power to feed those and less to feed the battery?

yesterday I got a good 20 hrs or so with heavy data and push emails.. today I barely got 12hrs.. the only difference today for me was that location services was on.. So I think the battery drain comes from GPS mostly and definitely wifi if you keep it on
Yes, GPS and wifi can really be drains, bluetooth not so much it seems. As many of you know, if you are charging your phone using your computer's USB port it may be far s-l-o-w-e-r than using the faster AC adapter.
Ok and thanks for the tips. I have been using the wall charger. I will turn off location and see how that goes. Most of the time I don't need it anyway. I know where stuff is where I live. HAHAHA.
I've had my Focus for three days now and the battery never lasts more than 12 hours - and I haven't made any calls with it! I have it for testing, so it's not my main mobile but I've been using it for everything else. Internet, email sync, Zune, social networking, etc.
I turned off wifi, location, bluetooth, set the screen to low brightness and still only ~12 hours.
Hello to all!
Since I don't have honor to post on main development page I need to post here in question!
I can't find nowhere something about battery life, I installed without problem ROM on my SIV and battery life is very poor. Yesterday I watched on YouTube MKBHD Hangout with Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside which have length of 39 minutes I think. My battery was at star 98% and at the time of ending video vas 45%. Battery can't last full day of normal usage. (it last from 07:00 to 18:00). At beginning I noticed this problem and I installed One Power Guard and its always on powersave or standby mode.
This anyone facing with this problem?
Yes mine is exactly the same. Running v4.0 and battery life is terrible now. Camera app force closes every now and then and sometimes maybe twice a week it reboots.
Plus I can't charge it switched off - everytime I plug it in it starts up.
Hi,
My battery is a little poor too, but it was because I was with my cellphone screen on almost the whole day... When it was an extreme case (when I was in 4.3 AOSP ROM and it didn't last even some hours, like you), I recalibrated it (I used to do it with my Xoom and X10 Mini Pro, it may be a placebo, but looks like it worked...
To recalibrate simply let your battery run completely out, then plug to the charger and let it charger completely while turned off (the white battery icon appears), then turn it on and let it run out again, then charge fully again. Remember that plugging and unplugging your device from the charger is bad for your battery, and remember to keep the screen brightness very low, turn off WiFi, Bluetooth and SPECIALLY 3G when you're not using.
Hope this helps,
~Lord

You need to flash v.6.0 which mostly correct FC camera app. I notec when i was runinng on ART reboots was more common.
My solution was to flash MK9 stock rom, this is the most stable and reliably by me so far.

I recived phone with Android 5.1 2015-06-23 tryed flashing newer version 2015-07-14, also tryed battery calibration, fully charging, discharging few times and still same.
When is fully charged voltage is 4,2V (measuded with app battery calibration) at 50% is only around 3,6V (this is almost 0 capacity for lion battery) and is turning off at 3,4V.
Have anybody simmilar problem? It looks battery is bad not just software problem, but dont understand that it is showing 50% for that low voltage.
Thank you

IF you are on lollipop then its software problem as 5.1 seem to have the battery bug, and never calibrate battery on MTK devices, Calibration apps mess up MTK phone, they are not made for mtk devices.
I recieved phone with defective battery, after changing it dont have any battery problem even with Lollipop.
I noticed that battery discharging very fast below 8% (Stock 4.4.4 13.08 and other KK versions)
Well, i had different problem
My phone didnt charge, no matter how much i change cables or chargers.
But when the device was shut down, charged well.
I bought mine from pandawill, so i sent them a mail, and they sent me another battery...
In the meantime, the problem had solved, maybe the battery calibration i did helped.
Anyway,i got now 2 batterys...

I also have the problem and have the following conclusions:
1. Battery level will be displayed correctly after a reboot. Otherwise, the battery level indicator doesn't change as quickly as it should: it doesn't go up as fast while charging and doesn't go down enough when in use.
2. The point where the battery indicator starts going down by about 5%/minute varies and is in connection with the time it has been used. After two days without charging and without using the phone for more than one or two phone calls, it happened at around 5%, while lots of screentime made it happen when the indicator was above 50%. Some experimenting made it clear that it's not the battery's fault (in my case, at least) but rather a software problem.
Using stock KK 4.4.4.

Try to go battery settings and find out what application is eating your power.
Hi! I have this phone and few weeks ago I had a similar problem, when my phone had about 20%, it spend a lot of battery and in some minutes, it was without battery. I installed the Xtreme Rom and this was fixed. I hope you can fix your problem too with this.

Battery not charging when on - Solutions ?
Hi all,
My Jiayu will not charge when the fone is on, will only charge when switched off.
Any suggestions ?
Thanx Geoff
Known problem.
Saw it at my phone and in another phone.
How to solve: charge with original charger and cable and then switch to the other charger.
It worked for me twice.
Play it a little if its not working, switch cables, chargers, turn on and off...
Good luck.
