[Q] OTG & RCCDroid with Sony a58 camera - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
this is my first post in this awesome community
Maybe some guys here own a Sony SLT camera called 'Alpha 58' (or short a58) which is an incredible camara. For it's performance it has an incredible price tag and hence I own it. But there is one missing feature - the infrared sensor for controlling this piece of hightec remotely.
But fortunately there is a guy who developed an app called 'RCCDroid' which gave me new hope.
(please type it in google, the server prevents my post from external links)
This app uses the OTG USB interface, modern phones very often have. Except our beloved Nexus 4.
OK, now don't throw your hands up in horror: I've searched in the development threads of these brilliant OTG kernel patcher like Justvarshney and Ziddey. I've tried their kernels and brought OTG to live. Which actually means I brought it to live in case of mounting an USB stick.
Cause IT DOESN'T WORK WITH RCCDROID IN COMBINATION.
I have CM11 on my device, OTG works fine. But only a few kernels let the camera recognize my phone.
For now I have Francos r206 kernel flashed, which was patched from Justvarshney and then released just today.
I'm sure I have the right equipment. The y-cable, the external power..
And in the beginning it looks right.
I connect these stuff together. Switching the camera on starts RCCDROID automaticly. Also the cam (in PC remote mode) display says there is a remote control connected. However I can't give the camera signals. Touching the buttons stays inoperable.
Maybe I'm still using the wrong kernel?
Maybe I have an incompatible ROM?
Maybe..?!
The developer don't even gave me a respond. Sadly it's the only app which can do this. And however the app is quite new and feels beta like (the homepage as well) it's a really nice try to give a58 users a cool remote control.
Is there anybody out there who is experienced with this problem??
Greetings

hey centoo,
I discovered this app yesterday and completely fell in love with it. I got the A58 a few months ago and its an awesome deal for a DSLR(SLT). I was looking for a sutter control because my hands are very shaky and I like to take night shots.
After trying the free version for about 5 mins i deleted and downloaded the pro version for about $6.
There is 1 thing i dont like and its the fact that when using this app it only stores the pictures on my phone and not on the camera.
PS. im using CM11 with Nexus 5

My EVO is my favorite tablet and laptop... Check the video out!

The quality isnt the best on the video but I had some fun getting a bt keyboard on my HTC EVO and I'm now ditching my really heavy i7 laptop that I bring to school for notes and will start just bringing a small case for my bt keyboard, my notebook and books and the extra battery in case I run out...
I just did this today but used it well with some text editing apps, now I need to find the best one for notes... How I wish I could program so I could put my ideas in practice and make some $$$$
Thanks to all devs that made this happen, its just amazing that I now own a pocket tablet/notebook pc
ggingerbread 6 ROM
Savaged Z 0.2 kernel with HDMI mirroring
well the direct link wont work because its my first post... youtube.com/watch?v=3VGtp9WlZmM
Props on being innovative. In the past I have seen flexible Bluetooth keyboards which are just a big soft pad which may suit your application a little better! Now find a way to support HDMI mirroring and get a small battery powered monitor with HDMI.
Very nice, Been thinking of doing this for a while but havn't been able to decide on a keyboard. Now all you need is adw to lock in landscape.
I got the adw but I locked it in portrait , Im just excited that I wont have to carry a heavy case around and I can use my phone to do pretty much the same work.
Now If I could only use the original apk for quickoffice on CM7 (which I only tried it briefly with no luck) this should be even better.
I know that the keyboard is kind of old news but I'm sure some people werent sure whether they could invest $50-$60 on a Microsoft Bluetooth Mobile Keyboard 6000 to work on their EVO... By the way, if you do get that, when you pair it with your phone, try entering 1234 on the phone and then typing 1234 (followed by the Enter button) on the keyboard. I got stuck on that for a while
brokenbmx06, HDMI is supported now on cm7
Ideas...
Instead of making it landscape I seem to remember a way for when connected to BT it will open car home. The new car home is customizable, so I figure it would be a lot easier and nicer to do that then the locked in portrait mode. then it will stop as soon as BT is disconnected. And im sure there are better alternatives for the word processing
I saw some awesome 7"-10" monitors online with battery packs for really cheap. Buy an HDMI to DVI adapter and get yourself one. If you have time, skills, and/or patience, you can crate a small case for your monitor with a slot for your EVO, HDMI mirror and voila you now have a 10" monitor and your Bluetooth keyboard.
and with this I am going to go dismantle the 10" monitor I got and get working on something like this. I just need to find a good power source.... xD
I feel that if I have to get a small screen I'd rather buy an android tablet, in fact, I'm saving money to get one but I'm waiting until I find a honeycomb tablet that's a little more settled... There are a bunch coming out, the Optimus 3D one looks cool, but I'm not sure which one to get yet.
By the way, I'm not using CM7 RC4 (Android 2.3.3) with the Savage Zen kernel 1.1.0 (with HDMI mirroring) Very stable and battery is amazing! I can get over 3 days (YES! THREE DAYS!) with little use. I know that because I went away over a weekend and forgot my phone, when I came back it was at 38% at 80 hours without charging. (Seidio 3500mAh battery tho)
Very clever. I've been taking notes just by the phones keyboard, never thought about doing this.
meh, not worth the effort.
Try using android seven with the monitor. Even more of a laptop experience. Change the lcd density as well

It is for me... after I got cm7 RC4, all I had to do is turn my bt keyboard on and pair it... I got over 20 pages of notes from my philosophy of law class in the past couple of weeks, since it all syncs with my dropbox account, not a problem to see all my notes on my computers whenever I need
I can't see your video because I'm on my evo now and yourlink is not clickable and ill never be able to manualy type in the url on my phone.
But I did want to say that I occaionaly flash to cm so i can us my bt keyboard.
I have a stowaway sierra. It's the best kb that I am aware of. It unfolds to about the size of a typical full size laptop kb. I got it on eBay a while back used for about $70. Sometimes they aren't even available, they stopped making them seveal years ago.
It supports SIP and hid. No SIP drivers for android but luckily we have cm bt hid support.
The problem I have with this is that in order for me to have bt hid support I have to deal with cms short comings. I can't deal with crappy GPS or buggy WLAN, or no Sprint visual voicemail. Other wise i would be right there with our guys. Case I take notes and work with documents all day everydAY.

poll : do you have (had) the USB faulty issue or is USB working fine on your device?

Hi,
been reading up on known issues for my archos 101 and one kinda pops out and got me worried a bit: the USB going dead
I have an Archos 101 with latest fw for a week now and am reasonably happy with it.
I have the device not charing to 100% issue and also had my archos in a kind of rebooting-loop when in my backpack.
Battery thing doesn't bother me as battery life seems quite ok, and I didn't have the rebooting issue anymore ever since I switch off wifi when on the move.
I also have the problem that my canon powershot camera gets detected but that pictures aren't visible. My workaround solution of using an external usb card reader also isn't being mounted but I might try another one since the one I have is a very cheap and old one.
But as I mentionned the USB going faulty is the one that gets me worried since this is one of the main reasons for purchasing this device.
When browsing through the different forums and topics it seems quite a lot of people have (had) this issue but off course, people who don't have this issue rarely get involved in these topics and it's hard to determine the failure rate of USB's so I'm hoping a poll would shed some light on the size of the issue.
So please vote if you have (had) the USB faulty and please also vote if you never had any issues with it.
Please also comment with more info e.g. which board version, which FW version, stock/urukdroid, when did the issue occur (how old was your device), heavy or light usage of USB port etc
Thanks!
Cheers
B
no issue (so far)
which board version: V5
which FW version: 2.3.26
stock/urukdroid: stock
when did the issue occur (how old was your device): N/A
heavy or light usage of USB port: light (approx 2 times a day)
I have an Archos 70 IT 8GB with a V6 Board with firmware 2.1.08 and SDE and I never had anny issue with the USB port.
I don't use it often, but it works fine.
47 viewers and only 4 voters, come on guys, please vote and help mapping this issue!
thx!!
B
First 101 speakers spoil after 2 months, exchange a new one and work without any issue for more than 4 months.
Board: V6
Firmware: tried all stock firmwares and UrukDroid since Uruk 0.4
USB usage: heavy from thumbdrives to 3G stick.
From last time I heard, there is high chance that USB port went burst if plug in somethings there while plug power plug for charging..

Well, if you post it in enough forums, you might get enough responses...
I know the polls are still not functioning on the ArchosFans forum, but how is it going to help you map the issue if you have people that can skew your numbers by voting in multiple locations?
USB failure on 101 V6 FW 2.1.x after 2 months of moderate use
Got replacement unit
2. USB failure on V5 FW 2.3.26 after 2 months of rare use
also have the batteryperformance-issue since FW 2.3.x
Please remember that the current in Host mode is limited to 100mA, so many card readers will not be recognized. I'm still trying to find a DIY solution for this (battery powered hub).
Anyway. I've never had issues with the host mode when using bus powered devices that consumes less than 100mA.

I decided to put this topic on 2 forums indeed, point is to get a general idea. Forums aren't an accurate way of measuring these kind of things but until archos releases their internal replacement figures (probably around the same time as when pigs will start flying) it's the best we have I guess.
Sorry if I come across as "pushy" by posting this on 2 locations, I did that because of the fact that this issue has come up on both forums and maybe not all archosfans members are registered on xda or vice versa.
cheers

Archos 70 - No problem yet
which board version: not sure about the board version since I broke the screen 3 weeks ago and still have to buy a replacement on eBay, will be doing it soon cause I can't stand not being able to use that brilliant thing
which FW version: 2.3.26 (Uruk 1.0)
stock/urukdroid: urukdroid
when did the issue occur (how old was your device): Never
heavy or light usage of USB port: heavy, use the usb host with usb drives/mouse/keyboard all the time, and to connect the device to the pc about 4-5 times a day I would think
I had an A101 with a V5 board where the USB host port failed after a little over a month. Sent it back and got a replacement, also with a V5 board, and that has been just fine since (maybe 5 months now).
Which board version: V5
Which FW version: 2.0.71
Stock version of FW.
No issue, device 2 month old.
Very light using.
Only HD based DiskOnKey no work.
I plugged my compact speaker system into the usb port to power up the speakers and it worked flawless, you might have a faulty port.
Never had any issues with my USB port for 6 months.
Archos 101, board V5. All stock firmwares since January. Light usage with USB flash drives and Western Digital HDD.
A70 board V6 on 2.3.26
All stock firmwares, still reads the sd card.
Was working until recently, can't pinpoint exactly when it stopped, around the time I upgraded to .26. My camera used to connect and I could view the pictures, now it jsut says it's connected, but doesn't read anything on the camera. I used to use my 120gb Samsung S1 mini, now it just gives me a message that it requires too much power. If I use a powered hub, nothing shows on the screen, doesn't even recognize a drive connected. Used to work just fine this way. I can't think of anything being installed between it working and not that would cause this besides the firmware.
'figures... The day after I posted the above note about my USB port still working several months after getting it replaced... It looks like this one has now failed too.
:-(
Well it looks like it just happened to me as well.
Board Version: V6
Which FW version:
2.3.20 (+) Permanently rooted via Chulri's Method (+) OC'd to 1200 mHZ max and 300 mHz min.
(These settings are stable for me but battery drains in like 2 hours or less).
No issue until about a few weeks ago.
Used port very quite often for watching movies & listening to music. About 5 times a week.

Question:
Is there any way to fix it by either ripping it apart and doing it myself using a USB port from somewhere else OR by fully reinstalling/reformatting the entire device to factory settings?
Problem (for me):
I bought mine off eBay from this guy in Indiana who bought it as new but only owned it for a month and sold it to me due to never really using it. So be that as it may, my A101IT is already registered to him. If mine has to be sent to Archos to replace, how much are the damages in cost because the port is my only problem? Any ideas on what I can do or the best way to go about this?
Since last weekend, USB is dead.
A101 IT 8GB
Board version: V5
UrukDroid 1.0
Purchased: 6 months ago
Light usage with a HDD before.
Tried chulris DVB Method on Saturday (With WinTV Nova Stick, nice work, thanks chulri ), buyed the Cinema Plugin and after 4 hours of watching TV, the USB port is dead. Doesn't recognize any HDD or USB Stick (dmesg shows nothing when i plug in something) but delivers power to the devices as usual.
And for me, when the USB fails, the Archos also stops sleeping when you turn it off or tell it to deep-sleep. The two problems are definitely related.

2nd hand vega

hi,
I'm going to buy a 2nd hand vega and wondered if anyone has any advise on what to look for in terms of faults or known issues.
Also in USB host mode can you connect anything? thinking about my usb competition pro for amiga emulation?
TIA
Ah classic answer when buying 2nd hand devices...
Test every peripheral that's in the device!
In Vega there is:
- LCD --> weak viewing angles are OK
- WiFi --> try to connect to an open / home router, or at least try to find/list a Wifi router nearby
- Accelerometer --> try pivoting the Vega left/right/upside down (I have trouble with this)
- Touchscreen --> try tapping in every 4 corrners of the display, or test it by typing something on a virtual keyboard (I must add that the display is not ultra-responsive!)
- USB --> have a USB key with you, plug it in and check your files in file manager.
Also if you're interested in connecting other peripheral thru the USB port, why don't you unplug your mouse/keyboard from your computer and test it on the Vega?
- HDMI --> if you have a TV + HDMI cable nearby, test it
- MicroSD --> if you have any spare MicroSD card, test it
- Other things I might forgot to mention (see specs for more).
Thanks
I've read about the general issues with the device like the viewing angle and touchscreen.
Dont really understand why viewing angle is an issue for a tablet. As for touchscreen sensitivity I'm sure my sausage fingers will work fine
I was wondering if there are any common faults that develop over time which could be missed initially or is the vega generally either working or not working?

Well in general the viewing angle wouldn't be a real problem.
But the problem on Vega is that viewing angle is like 10-degrees.
If you want to show a pretty picture/video to someone on the tablet you need to point it directly to that person.

See my post above.
I have trouble with accelerometer. After 6 months it stopped working and now after 8 months sometimes it's working and sometimes it's not working.
Oh, and forgot about the buttons, especially the "power" button is a real rebel.
Quite a lot of people have trouble with it here on XDA.
well I got it and it all works.
Only problem....there was no a-a usb cable so had to do a bit of gender bending on two old cables
worked a treat just flashing vegacomb and copying some stuff onto my SD have to say even from playing round in 2.2 its gooooood
its a good device, my POV mobii tegra2 is very handy at night time, youtube and gaming is very nice on it. i got it new for £132 inc vat, was well worth it. here's me hoping to get windows 8 working on it in the future.
totally blown away by how good vegacomb is.
I've had a keyboard and mouse hooked up to it via the dock all day. Its great.
Will test my competition pro usb tonight

Damn Gravity

hello
my hd2 'was' dropped, it is working, but backlit isnt.
Now... do You have an idea how can I use this phone, while backlit is not working?
Is that possible to stream audio from one to another android device? im thinking in connecting hd2 to my old panasonic midi hifi ect.
Do you have another ideas?
Beside that, would be Note 2 good replacement for hd2? i'm concerning baout the size.. i was using note1 for short time, in pocket i was ok, but i was not too handy to use only with one hand.
Buy a new lcd & digitizer combo for about 20USD & fix it.
Note 2 is big to use daily if not a lover of large devices. Assume you are an android user & if so plenty of device choice from likes of LG too with removable battery, sd slot & status LED which are basic features missed out on some of today's cheap designed so called advanced technology smartphones ...

G2 slowed down after removing display

Hello everyone.
My LG G2 ran pretty great for past 3 years and then, few days ago, I finally broken it display. I've disconnected it from motherboard and decided to use it as HTPC for my TV. I've bought slimport cable and after connecting it to my TV, I've realised that G2 acts kind of strange. Everything works fine as before, but WHOLE system runs like 2FPS, or even slower. Any action takes about 3-4 seconds to perform. Besides that nothing's wrong. GPS, Camera, calling, Wifi, opening various apps or games - everything works and phone isn't even hot. I have clean CloudyG2 3.3. Can it be due to lack of display? Some kind of 'safe mode' in which phone runs right now? I don't want to throw it into the rubbish.
Any kind of help would be appreciated. Sorry for bad English.
Bump. Any ideas?
I have the same issue. It was also present when the shattered display was connected to the motherboard (LCD connectors were damaged as well).
I've tried connecting the phone using SlimPort adapter, but also screen mirroring to PC (Windows 7 + Google Chrome + Vysor).
The issue is present on both stock rom (D80230b) and CyanogenMod 13 rom (20160720-NIGHTLY).

I'm glad that someone had the same issue and can provide more informations. Still looking forward for solution.
Bump.
Bump. Still trying to solve that problem. I believe someone will need help in next few years having the same situation as above
G2 still laying in drawer waiting for solution
