How do you go about changing the splash screen on the S4? I came from an HTC One which achieved it through fastboot but to my understanding AT&T's S4 doesn't have fastboot.
P.S I'm not talking about boot animations since a lot of people get them confused lol.

I don't believe you can. I had an HTC before this and a custom splash, but the splash on this one is probably integrated into the bootloader (so it changes with the custom flag).

I know that the att galaxy s4 has the same exact hardware as the Google play galaxy s4, so if someone dumped that phone, bootloader and all, and flashed it to att model, would it unlock the bootloader and would it run that rom alright? I kind-of want to have the updates not directly from att so I could get stuff like the app2sd quicker.
Thanks, Tommy

Locked boot loader is in the hardware, no matter what you flash, it won't change that. Having said that, there are several roms floating around, give one a try as they still work on our devices, I would not trust a raw dump as that might have a different boatloader that will screw the phone ge

Thanks for reply, and my next question now is when you flash a custom TW rom, would I still lose IR, air view, and air gesture? Would I also have to wipe my phone in process of flashing it?

It depends on the Rom. Some won't, others will. The Google edition is a tw Rom, but brings the look, feel and functionality of asop. You will have to research the Rom.
It's often necessary to wipe a phone when changing roms. If you start flashing, I would almost count in it being needed

Thanks again

Well thanks for help, but I will do anything to avoid a wipe, that's the last thing I want to so, even with titanium backup I don't feel secure enough to risk wiping and restoring it. I also don't want to raise the flash counter any if I ever need to use my warranty. And I don't trust that flash counter reset thing because it could brick phone.

Then stay stock. If you're going to flash a rom you have to do wipes most of the time. If you don't you'll end up with lots of problems that will force you to start all over. Just make a nandroid backup in your recovery before flashing and you'll be able to get right back to where you started if you have a problem.

Another vote for Rom Toolbox Pro, changed my boot animation without any hicup! I'm using "Mbrokeh" listed under tablet animations!

boot animation and boot logo are two completely different things. and you dont need an app to change boot animations. just put whatever bootanimation.zip into /system/media/ or /data/local/ and reboot for it to take affect. but again, boot logo and boot animation are two different unrelated things.
Oops, thanks for correcting me. Only goes to show I need to read more carefully next time before responding!
Well that sucks. And odd that you can't. I think you can on the gnex. I flashed a kernal on it and it had the kernal branded under Google. Odd.

on the gnex we can, thanks to ezekeel. he tried to enable it on the n4 as well, but he said the chances of bricking is way to high. that boot img is located in the bootloaders partition. i did the testing for him on the gnex, and was very happy when he finally got it

See the logic here? lol

Again used to be able to do this on the nexus one also.
The correct name is the splash (the first thing you see when powering on. The x and Google before the animation)
It used to be a separate partition on older phones (splash1)
But now it is part of the bootloader which means modifying it is risky

Hi! I'm using an AOSP rom in my I337m. I want to use the Kit Kat 4.4.2 picture whrn my phone starts instead of the Samsung Galaxy S4 that is the default. Any Help?
Sorry I can't be of help here but be VERY CAREFUL with it. I tried to change that splash screen on my less than week old S4 back when it first came out. I hard bricked it and had to send it for JTAG at MobileTechVideos. I really liked making them on my ATT S3 and thought I had it figured out when I first got my S4. Flashed it and was bricked.
It wasn't a FULL hard brick as I was able to get into download mode but not recovery. BUT even though I was able to get into download mode and flash the stock .md5 files back then it would NOT do anything other than the blue led light up and the phone vibrate constantly. It would never get past that point.
So point is I haven't tried it a second time.

True, but 1337m's (Canadian s4) are not bootloader locked like their American counterparts

locked/unlocked bootloaders has nothing to do with being able to modify the bootloader itself.
I have a 337m. I am canadian. I am a developer. I am a retired moderator.
if it were really that easy they would have modified the 337m bootloader to work on the 337 long time ago,.
My bad

First time Android user. I jailbroke several iphones in the past but just learning about rooting. I just did the towelroot, now what????
What is cyanogenmod? Do I need it?
Thanks for everyone who helps out!
Download rom manager from play store and use it to flash a custom recovery.. It should be simple
After that you can flash cyanogenmod which is a ROM that changes your phones interface to almost stock android with some added features

oh right cwm doesn't support S5 yet. anyway there's another recovery other than cwm you can use which is twrp.. download goomanager from playstore and use it the same way to install twrp

As far as I know the ATT S5 has a locked boot loader and hence cannot use custom recoveries or ROMs. For now you are stuck with the ROM you have. You are able to modify your ROM now though.

Two things you should consider..
First of all, if you install a custom kernel/recovery, it will void your warranty (this is called as tripping the KNOX flag). Currently, this is something that you cannot fix by yourself and if your phone breaks Samsung may or may not fix it. But that doesn't actually matter since your phone is on ATT and that one is bootloader locked anyway (which means that currently you cannot flash that recovery anyway).
Second thing is that currently CM11 is pretty broken and some features like GPS and Camera aren't working. It will take some time before people manage to iron out all the bugs and even then it might not be perfect.
My advice is that you should first try to get familiar with the phone and then start thinking about modifying it since you aren't used to Android phones. While rooting might give you some functionality you normally wouldn't have, it's not really something that you'll absolutely need. Even out of the box Android is still way more capable and customizable than iOS and most of that stuff doesn't need rooting.
I am looking to get rid of my htc one m8 and go back to Samsung. I know the s5 does not have an unlocked boot loader but it looks like custom roms can happen via safestrap. My question is, when buying the phone used, is there a specific software version i DO NOT want? The goal is to root, safestrap and then put some sort of custom rom on the phone.
Thanks

Currently you are good to go even on the latest NI2 update. You only need to downgrade the kernel to NCG via odin, run towel root, then reflash the newest NI2 kernel. There is a good write-up on it. Just look a few posts down.

Thanks for the reply. I'm so excited to get off of the m8. The reception is terrible.
I also see that the dev scene looks pretty limited in the Verizon section. Is that because everything has been unified like the s4 so I can pretty much use any rom? AOsp, cm, etc

No, unfortunately, things are somewhat limited as the bootloader remains unlocked for the consumer edition so no custom kernels.
I think he meant to say the bootloader remains locked on the retail version.
