It wasn't quite ready for prime-time. Before the Focal relicensing incident, the plan would've been to finish polishing it within CM. But when Cyngn tried to forcefully obtain commercial rights to it using their CLA (fortunately, the AOSP CLA which both Omni and CM use isn't that powerful and doesn't allow you to relicense GPL works), development stopped for 2+ months and then we all became busy with Omni itself.
I think eventually xplodwild decided he'd be better off rewriting most of Focal rather than polishing the existing codebase, but he's been very busy with other stuff lately. Maybe he'll have more time once this semester of graduate school ends.
And we don't use CM's camera. We use AOSP camera with a very small number of CM cherry-picks.
So pretty much the answer is "because we haven't had the time to replace it"

Hey folks. Wondering if someone can chime in on the possibility of this...
I want the Camera app from the factory LG rom to work on AOSP phones. only because its HDR ability was much better than any app I have tried to fill that void since I switched to CM. Also it's Manual focus was a nice feature among many other things.
I assume it'd need LG's Framework as well to make it work, but if anyone can try to piece this together, or get me the files Id need (I'm no longer on LG's rom) Id be very grateful!

Focal is going to perform roughly the same as stock CM camera. We need the stock LG camera from the G2 as it can better interface with the hardware, not to mention has device specific tuning for the hardware. No other camera will be able to compete with the stock G2 camera.
To the request, i spent some time trying to get it to work few days ago. Not much progress, others have posted that hey manged to get the camera app to completely start up and take pictures, i have not made this much progress. Wish they would have posted theirs.
There is already a discussion about this in the Att-dev section.

Focal doesnt work for me. I'm on newest CM nightly, and pressing the shutter button in focal causes a FC every time.
As an update, I took the apks and odexs from the LG rom for LGCamera CameraTestApp, LGGallery and the framework-res from the old rom. I tried sideloading the apps with no luck, they wont even show up in my app drawer. I assume I need to install the LG framework alongside CM framework, but that's beyond me.

The newest CM update added HDR and it seems to work exactly as with LG camera app. But we still need 13MP. CM's app is 8MP currently.

Hi, is it not possible to download the lg package from one of the g2 standard roms some of them have packages with all the original g2 apps in or am i mistaken about what you want ?
Is this what you were looking for?
Edit: It's a WIP, but hopefully it will work well soon.

Amalence makes the software the G2 uses for image processing, and they also have their own Camera software. It's virtually identical to LG's stock camera app, it just has a different skin.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.almalence.opencam
If you compare the stock to this, you'll see what I mean. It's the same camera as stock but with a different (IMO, better) skin.

Do you have a source for saying amalence is the company making LG's camera software? The program is similar yes, but not as good in my opinion. The HDR images are slower to snap and don't look as good to me. There is no "VR Panorama" or whatever LG called their photosphere mode

Note that the A_Better_Camera requires time to take 3 separate images, a good 1-1.5 seconds. The results are good tho.
I highly prefer the CM camera's HDR to A better camera, and I can't honestly tell the difference from the lg camera. The only thing missing is photosphere. I can use Focal for that, oddly enough that's the only feature that works in focal for me.

I just got my Moto G today and I'm more then happy with it.
One thing in lacking is the camera and lacking of settings.
I was going though my entire downloaded apps list and came across an app called "Focal" I'd downloaded in the past.
This application is basically a replacement camera app with all the settings that it should of came with already!
Just a heads up if you didn't already know about it

Its hard to say for sure. There is a lot more settings for adjusting the exposure and white balance.

Focal isn't CyanogenMod native camera, the Focal developer dropped CM when they became Cyanogen Inc, and since then he works by himself. That's why the app is in the Play Store, he didn't want to stop his work, and instead made it avaible for everybody.

This has always been the case for me, even beyond this phone (my old EVO 4G had this problem too), and I'm wondering if there's some kind of solution.
I don't really want to go back to TouchWiz. Frankly I'd rather have the camera issues than go back to it. Well, sort of. I'm a little torn between the two to be honest, but I am very fond of AOSP.
There's always some type of focus issue. TW is always good with focusing. Sometimes I have to cover the camera and let it see black to force it to refocus. Even then, sometimes I get this problem where it focuses, but it goes out of focus right after. Beyond this, color doesn't match up as well as it does with taking a photo with the Samsung camera, but that's fine because I can Photoshop them. One of the most bothersome things, however, is that HDR never works and Night mode isn't nearly as good.
Right now I'm using Vanir, which is lovely. This isn't an issue unique to it though. I haven't ever had an AOSP ROM that had a camera working the way I like, except the Google Edition ROM that died (development-wise) here in August. Unless it was picked up again and it totally passed me by.
If anyone can point me in the right direction I will be very happy.
Thank you
Edit: I'm also just wondering why this may be the case if anyone knows, and if this is unique to me.

Hello Everyone,
Can anybody port me the camera and photos app from COLOR OS of Oppo Find 5 so that I can make it default for CM 11 or OMNI rom. I find oppo camera n photos app(Gallery) much better than the defaults. I am not a developer nor have any experience in porting. If anybody could help it would really helpful for me and many other people out there. Please its a request.
Well is it possible to port from COLOR OS to kitkat ?
Thank you.
I was wondering about this too recently and from what I found here and on oppoforums I can tell you that right now it's impossible due to closed source code / drivers for a camera and dependency on ColorOS kernel (I'm not a developer either, but that's how I understood it).
SO until Oppo releases source code for it, we stuck with default camera on custom roms.
I like ColorOS camera better too, takes way better pictures than Omni stock camera

Porting it doesn't need any sourcecode. The closed sources is the apps and the camera hal. Porting camera and gallery without porting the whole rom will require several .smali hacking to remove dependice else it will need a lot other parts from color os.

So is there a chance that someone could port it to other ROM. Does anyone know any developer that would help us. If its possible then it will be great. Hoping that some one will take an initiative.
If its possible to port the stock camera app than i don't care if it needs files from coloros even if i have to flash 1GB of data i still flash it
anyone? there is a growing demand for this also due to all the new Oneplus One owner.

Hi XDA community,
I am currently running the latest AOSP on our phone, and it is very nice. The only part really missing now is the camera. I know anyone who is familiar with AOSP on our device will know the story.
What I am wondering now is if people would be interested in raising a bounty to get an implementation put together?
I for one would be happy to put up some cash if it meant that we got a fully functioning Android for another year. The hardware in the phone is plenty enough for everything I use it for.
Developers would any of you be interested in claiming a bounty by fixing up our camera drivers to work with the 3.10 AOSP kernel?

Is it stable enough to use as a daily driver? Other bugs/kinks than the broken camera? Im really tempted to test it but i cant download it through the mirror they use. Get some popup regarding adblock that i cant get rid of, even tho i use IE with no adblock at all...
Put me up for $15 :good:
I'll give my money ONLY IF the camera will be fisheye-bug free. (no flame please, this is just my offer)
I'm in with 15 $ too.
And I share the opinion of @istux that the camera should be fisheye-bug free.
@mcgi5sr2: Could you cross-post this in the Z3 forums too, since they are in the same situation and also might participate in the bounty? Cheers.
I would be in with 10 Bucks, too. Afaik the camera is already working with picture and video, only this fisheye bug makes it more or less useless. So with the fisheye bug fixed, everything should be fine?!

cool camera is improving a lot, next set of blobs should have it all sorted including auto focus. Would be cool if we could find a good dev and get him interested in sorting out the fish eye issue
Glad to see your thread as I wanna do the same.
Do you know a dev thread had been opened for this problem?
How do you plan to split the bounty between the devs who will fix the issue?
I buy my device for the camera. Without camera it is useless for me. Depending of the month on the claim I can be in between 20 and 50$.
The fisheye bug isn't there in the new camera. It's there only in the older blobs.

I'm not a developer but from what I've been reading (I'm a lurker ) for the past year is that the fish eye bug is introduced due to using the jellybean blobs from Z1 and then using a wrapper around it. The new camera does not use that, so there is no fish eye bug. Please correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't flashed any AOSP ROM on my device, but I read a lot. I've also seen the pictures taken by the z2 users and I can't see the fisheye in them. The incoming blobs should fix the focus problems, but the fish eye was never a problem ever since they got it working.

Sorry but the fisheye problem doesn't came from blobs only. We discuss a little about it here (and next posts). Our z3(c) had a wide angle camera in a small component. The only way to get this is with a specific lens on the imx220. (imx220c iirc). So honami blobs on z3 get the camera working (almost) perfectly except the proprietary implementation of sony lens correction is absent, that is why we have this fisheye bug. And afaik only z3(c) had this imx220 version.
So if new blobs doesn't provide this proprietary correction or release it still under drm protection, fisheyebug will still be present.
The fisheye is something that needs to be corrected with aftermarket picture processing. As of V5 blobs, the camera on shinano is working, but autofocus is not properly calibrated. That will be done in the future V6 blobs.
If someone wants a 7.1 Build for aries with a working (read non-crashing cam, but broken AutoFocus), I upload some of my Carbon Builds from time to time here:
https://dl.myself5.de/aries/CarbonROM/
Btw, the fix for the camera on 1.3.3 that made full pictures possible was done by @erikas, maybe you want to consider him in your bounty decision. Everything else will be done using vendor blobs or picture post processing.
