Due to battery drain that has plagued us since upgrading to firmware 4.4.2, I have tried to downgrade back to 4.3 but am unable to.
Odin is unable to proceed with error. Anyone has been able to accomplish the back to 4.3 feat (with firmware)? I have N900R4 (US Cellular) model.

I'm currently running on 4.2.2 Jelly Bean on my ATT Galaxy S4(SGH-i337). I want to upgrade to the latest Kitkat 4.4.2 Stock Update. My ATT S4 is rooted and unlocked to work in India.
Can someone tell me:-
- If I need custom recovery for this ?
-If Yes/ No how do I go about it ?
-Will I lose root & and Carrier unlock after update ?
- Link to the Stock 4.4.2 Kitkat OTA

If you update, depending on which firmware you are on now, you will lose your ability to boot custom roms. If you have the MDL firmware, I suggest keeping it as you can use LOKI to bypass the locked bootloader and boot custom roms and recoveries. Now to answer your questions.
You can use a custom recovery to update to 4.4.2 if a .zip file for the update is available. You can also use ODIN to flash the update. You will lose root unless you use a pre-rooted update file. The stock 4.4.2 update is in the General forums I believe.
Hello I have a question regarding my GS4.
I have an sgh-i337 on 4.2.2 rooted and unlocked with regionlockaway and was wondering if I could update to 4.4.4 without losing my unlock?

I'm 99% sure that once you are sim unlocked, you are good until you manually lock it again. Upgrading will not relock your device. In the off chance that I'm wrong, then NB1 base CAN be sim unlocked. Which is what you Odin before taking the latest update... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2595457
That said, if your 4.2.2 is base MDL or earlier, by upgrading you will PERMANENTLY lock your bootloader with no work around and be stuck using touchwiz based KitKat ROMs with safestrap recovery. (no lollipop, CM, or GPE)
My wife and I just purchased the AT&T US version Galaxy S4 I337 brand new in box with NJ5 4.4.4 firmware stock everything. No rooting nothing. Over the air updates brought in a 485 megabyte update three times. The first two failed, while the third attempt apparently succeeded.
I have checked updates twice since and it states "Current." In the "about phone" section it lists "Official" now.
I am EXTREMELY familiar with flashing custom and stock roms to my T-Mobile SGH-M919. I have downloaded the AT&T 5.0 Rom. Can I just dirty flash with Odin? Does the phone's locked bootloader prevent the Odin flash? Any tips or hints on this would be great.
I downgraded my T-mobile S4 to 4.4.2 from 4.4.4 with ease. With the AT&T be just as easy with the 4.4.4 to 5.0.1 with Lollipop?
cheers for any pointers or thoughts.
You probably purchased the phone with NJ4 firmware, and when you ran the OTA update, it upgraded you to NJ5. This is a security update which is believed to respond to the stagefright bug. Since the security update became available about a week ago, the OTA update from 4.4.4 to 5.0.1 has been replaced with the security update, so that those on 4.4.4 stay on 4.4.4, and those on 5.0.1 get the update from OC3 to OC4.
It is never good practice to dirty flash, and is impossible when changing base. Please read the various guides available in the general forum for guidance on how to proceed. Or if you are patient, maybe the OTA from 4.4.4 to 5.0.1 will be reactivated soon, and you can upgrade the phone that way.
Hi,
I have experience with the Canadian S4 I337M, currently running custom Validus ROM 5.1.1, originally was on TouchWiz 4.4.2;
I have altough a question that seems quite.. debated, did looked around I can't find a definitive answer and know who I should trust. I wonder if options changed in 2015 rather than 2013 when KNOX was still new.
Out of simple curiosity (I will not attempt it, risky, probably useless and I'm running 5.1.1 anyway): I keep reading that it's impossible to downgrade the S4 to 4.2.2, due to the KNOX bootloader on 4.3 / 4.4, I understand that you cannot downgrade below 4.3 which is the "new" KNOX bootloader.
1. I'm simply curious: On the I337M, what happens if you grab the stock 4.2.2 firmware and flash it with Odin anyway, considering I'm on 4.4 ? My guess, if I'm correct, Odin detect the bootloader version right away and says "FAIL". Correct?
2. I used to think it was possible to downgrade from 4.4 to 4.3, since 4.3 has the KNOX bootloader as well. Is this possible anyway, or will Odin fail (Not going to try it, not worth it)? Considering what I've read just today, 4.4 is also a new bootloader. In any case, since that 4.4 bootloader cannot be downgraded (I guess?), there is no way to downgrade from 4.4 to stock 4.3 either? Odin will show "FAIL" ?
3. Is there any other way to downgrade it anyway? I understand that KNOX 0x1 remain irreversible yet, and to my knowledge, it's impossible to dowgrade to 4.2.2 (Or even 4.3?), but I've been reading that it was possible to downgrade if the bootloader is excluded from the TAR archive, make sense to me, but is that true, was that patched? Should I recompile an ODIN package excluding the bootloader, is that how it's done (Too dangerous, not trying it)? Or maybe by using Mobile Odin / FlashFire, downgrading from 4.4 to 4.3 / 4.2 can be acheived, if the bootloader is left untouched? What happens if we try it anyways? Odin fail, or device does boot but doesn't get past Samsung boot logo?
I'm just wondering, and quite confused by the different opinions that were shared. Remember this is for the Canadian I337M variant.
Thanks for confirming, appreciate!

If you try to downgrade the bootloader from 4.4.2 to 4.2.2, you could wind up hard-bricking the phone as the bootloader cannot be downgraded.
annoying :/
