[Q] Nexus 7 (2012) Shutting Down for no reason - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok.... A brief description....
Nexus 7 is on..... Sometimes it's in the dock..... Sometimes it's in the case.....
All seems fine and running.....
Then.... When not in use (in the case) or sometimes charging in the dock, It just shuts down and will only restart with a loooong press on hold of the power button. In all cases, the battery is 90% > 100% charged.
Now.... I have reset the cache and factory reset a few times.... Yet the problem is still there.
Last few times, I have reset the cache and then the factory reset.... The reset of cache works fine, but if I reset the cache prior to factory reset, the factory reset shows a bunch of errors trying to access the cache....
Am I doing something incorrectly or does it have to go back to Asus for a second time?
These issues didn't start occurring until after the last system update to 4.4.2

How are you resetting the cache? Do you mean clearing the cache? Are you referring to Dalvik cache? Are you doing this via a Custom Recovery (CWM or TWRP)?
What error messages do you see? Can you post a screenshot of these error messages?
Sorry for the barrage of questions... but the more information you can provide, the more likely you are to acquire a diagnosis, and a possible solution.

I am clearing the Dalvik cache..... This is done in stock recovery on an unrooted Nexus 7.
I can't take a screen shot unless I do a full factory reset again... But if I remember right it was trying to access E drive and the at least on error said it could access the cache...

Hi, Legobricke...
Apologies for not getting back to you sooner, but I've been really busy this past week with work.
And if truth be told, I've also been finding excuses not to write this post... because I hate delivering bad news. And your above quoted output, I think, is very 'bad news'.
Everything about it suggests you have either a bad eMMC/NAND chip (hardware failure)... or a partition corruption.
There is very slim possibility you **might** get your Nexus 7 working again, by fastboot flashing a Google factory stock image... but given your previous descriptions of random shutdowns, and this sort of thing...
Code:
E: Failed closing /dev/block/platform/sdhci-tega.3/by-name/MSC (I/O error)
(...and which is something I've never seen or heard of before...)
Well... I'm not optimistic fastboot flashing anything will work, to be honest.
I think your best bet, is to return it back to Asus and hope they'll fix it.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
Rgrds,
Ged.

Flashing Stock firmware using odin (3.07) + new PIT
Formatted internal storage
Factory reset
Wiped cache & dalvik
Flashing Pre-rooted firmware -> Flashing recovery (TWRP) -> Factory reset -> Formatted /system -> Flashing FoxHound
What I did the last 24 hours:
Flashed CrossBreeder
Installed and used 'Pimp My Rom (beta)'
I am hopeless :crying:, please help me!

[Q] Bricked nexus 7 first generation? Fastboot recovery won't work

I know there's already dozens of threads with this problem but I've been going through them for three days now and I've pretty much given up trying to fix this. I'm posting here as a last resort.
All of sudden my nexus started shutting off or restarting and then it froze at the google screen, not the X logo like most people. I went into fastboot and then to recovery then tried the wipe data/factory reset option, doesn't do anything. Left it on that screen overnight and all that happened was the battery drained.
Now I'm stuck with in the android recovery screen because I kept trying to wipe it so much
E:failed to mount /cache (Invalid argument)
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E:failed to mount /cache (Invalid argument)
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
E:failed to mount /cache (Invalid argument)
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_install
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/last_install
E:failed to mount /cache (Invalid argument)
I've downloaded sdk files, images and toolkits. I've done commands but I can only get up to unlock bootloader because it fails. I don't know what else I can do at this point, nothing seems to work. I've watched a video of a guy doing the wipe data/factory reset and it reset in seconds so I'm very frustrated with this thing. It's only 10 months old and I can't remember if I got a warranty or not and I don't even know how long a warranty is on these anyway.
Forgot to mention a couple things. When I try to wipe it, the android is frozen unless I press the power button and volume up again. Then the blue line and the little shape in front of the android start moving. There's no text here and the text freezes on -- Wiping data... Formatting /data and I never rooted it.
I am getting this same issue. The lack of replies is concerning.

The reason there are no replies is probably because there is no solution if people can't help they won't comment and clutter up the board with useless posts. Tell me everything you can about your situation is your bootloader unlocked? Rooted? What ROM are you on? Can you access fastboot mode? Ect and I will see if I can help

I was on cyanogenmod 11 4.4. I had many random reboots and was going to do a factory reset through recovery, it was freezing too much to reset through Android. I used Nexus root toolkit when I rooted/ installed CM11. Now when I try to use the toolkit I get fails and trying though recovery gets me the E: failed to mount errors.
Nexus 7 Wifi (2012)
unlocked bootloader (still shows unlocked on "google" screen
Was Rooted
I can access fastboot mode.
I tried to flash via fastboot and was unsuccessful.
Thanks for your help.
What error message do you get when you use wugfresh NRT back to stock and unroot with the option for soft bricked
Edit: It just occurred to me the most common reason for flashing failing or "failure to mount" is a corrupted nand memory, a bit like bad sectors in a hard drive.
Nand going bad could produce the spontaneous reboots and would explain why you are unable to reflash it.
The only option if that is the case is RMA or a new motherboard.

[Q] Need urgent help, can't mount cache

Hi guys
I really need help with my G2.
Basically, I installed resurrection remix, everything working fine for a week.
Today, when i used my phone, it kept force restarting. Finally, it got into a LG logo bootloop and has not been able to start up.
I managed to get into TWRP recovery but when I tried to reflash my ROM it said it could not mount system.
I decided to flash CWM to see if I could fix the problem and sure enough, it fixed but there is another problem.
When i tried to wipe cache, it hangs and freezes and gets stuck on formatting cache.
I reboot and I see these messages below:
E: Can't mount /sdcard/
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/command
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E: Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
I decide to try wiping cache again but to no avail.
can anybody help me?
Thanks in advance
Having the same problem. I think im going to try going back to stock.

Boot Loop Nexus 4 - dead eMMC?

Recently, my Nexus 4 has been crashing randomly - shutting off with no warning or notice. It has always rebooted back up without issues. Last night, however, it just got stuck in a boot loop - spinning balls for hours on end.
Bootloader and Recovery Mode come up with no trouble.
The phone is and always has been pure OEM/stock. I've only ever updated using built in OTA process.
I tried to reflash to stock using Wug's Nexus Toolkit, but it repeatedly failed saying the device was locked. I tried to unlock the bootloader, but that seems to require a reboot to take hold, and every time I tried the reboot it would loop again.
In Recovery Mode, I get the following:
E:failed to mount /cache (Invalid argument)
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E:failed to mount /cache (Invalid argiument)
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E:can t open /cache/recovery/last_log
E:can t mount /cache/recovery/last_install
E:can t open /cache/recovery/last_install
I have downloaded the full image and tried flashing the cache, and system with no effect. Toolkit doesn't show an error, but nothing changes.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm at a loss.
Did you try
fastboot erase cache.img
fastboot flash cache cache.img
Then perform wipe data/factory reset before booting into android.

Error can't mount cache

Hello.
I have a Nexus 7 and doesn't work. The battery gone out and when I turn it on it hangs a screen with Google logo.
I have tried everthing. To enter in bootloader, try to restore the tablet and I have an error:
E: can't open file
E: failed to mount /cache (Invalid argument)
I have tried to reinstall Android from pc, but it hangs the tablet.
Do you know what can I do? I don't mind if I have to delete everything, I just want the tablet works again.
Thank you very much.
Regards.
