[Q] Galaxy S5 button not working - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi guyz. So I just bought a Galaxy S5 tested it with water and everyhing seemed alright. Soi installed many apps. among them gravity screen and greenify. dunno wtf happened but my power button refused work and skmetimes just sometimes. It worked but sending me straight to the power menu(restart.shut dowwn.etc.) this seemed rare so I took batery off. it powered on as i put the batt in alone. but nothing worked. uninstalled the 2 apps as i said but not even that worked. so i had to try to hit restart like 3 times via power menu. because power button didnt dont want to work. and now it works.... perfectly..wtffff
u guys think it is water damage?
defective S5?
the 2 apps caused this problem(aka) software issue?
thanks

Might be software problem from all that. I'd try factory reset to stock to see if works. If it doesn't, then hardware issue. If it does work, then something you did or installed.

Are you using ART or Dalvik? I've noticed on mine (completely stock, never been wet etc) that under ART the sleep/wake button sometimes does not work. Absolutely fine with Dalvik though.

the issue is so strange but after i uninstalled gravity screen and greenify and restarted twice power button works as well as never.so... I hate this issue.

well Im still using dalvik. Art is still laggy and unresponsive for me. never tried on this device doe. but after i uninstalled those 2 apps and redtarted everything works fine.
I just dont get why greenify or screen gravity would interfere in power button...

knox is touched and 0x1. First SuperSU asked to disable knox and i said no. A few days later i provoked the dialogue again and said yes. The power button works definitely flawlessly. I use the payed version of both apps.

Lock screen and Knock On Solution

Strangely, my phone stopped responding to knock on to wake the screen. When you pressed the hardware power button to wake the screen would immediately close. It would take about 10-15 tries to unlock the screen in that split second before it closed. To troubleshoot I flashed back to factory and I still had the same issue after the phone was allowed to sleep just a few minutes. I took the OTA, same problem.
I was ready to box it up and swap out, but decided to try one other thing. I went to the screen off effect and changed it to Simple. Everything worked fine after that. I switched it back to retro tv and it would take many more tries to wake the screen. apparently its some kind of software bug. Thought I'd pass the info on to anyone else having similar issues.
Apparently root apps that play with system files trigger the bug too, like greenify. So the bug isn't tied to one screen effect, just switching to another fixes it until you play with system files via flashing or root apps. Hopefully it's something they fix in the next update.
It seems if you flash or change any system files, it reverts back to the retro tv effect and the issue repeats until change to another transition.
So the knock on feature is supposed to be more reliable if I do this?

If you are suffering from the same software bug, it works. If you flash a mod or do anything that does a "updating android" on reboot, it reverts back to the default screen effect and the knock on becomes unreliable. After a deep sleep you can't wake it with a knock most of the time. Strange but saved me a trip verizon hell for a swap.
Wow!!! I can totally confirm that this is working! Thank you so much... I was getting to the point that I didn't really use the knock on feature due to the flakiness of it... Now it works flawlessly!

Glad it helped man. I restored my recovery, reflashed stock and took the ota before i found the bug. lol Works as advertised now.
Im getting the same problem with mine, but the retro screen switch to simple isnt solving the problem. Tsking so many tries and not being able to knock on is making the phone unusable.
Any other suggestions or off to Verizon? Im within the 14 days...

Make sure the sensor area to the right of the FF camera is clean. If you have a screen protector over it, you might want to pull it off and clean the area really good. If that sensor is blocked or not working, it will do the same thing whether or not you change the screen off settings. Could be a bad sensor and you may need to swap it out.
Tried cleaning it, no luck. Seems like its hw related. Off to vzw I go.

Can confirm this. Disabling retro worked originally, but after rooting and Greenify it's back.
Do I have to flash to stock to fix now? Or will Greenify uninstall do the trick?

Well, I tested it myself. Uninstalling Greenify does indeed fix the knock-on issue.
A shame, as I really liked that app. Boo Verizon/LG. Boo.....
Damn! I was wrong.
Still having this bug, but only from deep sleep.
Incredibly annoying, but I really don't want to Re flash. Any ideas.
I'm dying here....

Greenify or any root program that modifys system files has the possibility of triggering the bug. In my personal testing, after you change the screen off to something different after installing Greenify, it stops. I'm guessing the core issue is with the front sensor that disables knock on. A hardware software combination. Strangely even after flashing back to stock doesn't fix the bug. First deep sleep and it will return until you change that setting in screen off.

Flashed back to stock myself and the problem continued. I returned the phone for a new one yesterday (14 days) and for the moment I'm going to keep this one stock until the issue fleshes itself out.

Nothing seems to fully resolve this. Super annoyed I ever installed Greenify. Ugh.
I'm within my 14 days (I got it on Monday), but I purchased from letstalk (the $26 price mistake deal that lasted a few minutes). Does anybody know if I can just walk into Verizon to switch it out, or do I have to do the mail back, wait 5 days with no phone thing?
thanks
I've only replaced the phones I directly received from Verizon in person. Call Verizon and tell them you needed to swap a phone under the 14 days. They can look at your account and tell you if you can just swap it in person or if you need to return through the reseller.

In theory, Greenify may break such a feature like Knock-on, but its always recoverable. Simply de-greenify the app and manually launch it to restore everything to normal.
Please avoid greenifying any app with background functionality.
PS: Greenify actually never touch any system files.

Battery Drain issue and Resolution

Long story short, my gps just kept coming on by itself even after turning it off multiple times. Even after rooting, installing twrp and flashing Clean Rom 1.1 (THANKS SCOTT) it was still there. Looks like it was the carrier IQ causing the issue. I've done these three steps and haven't seen it since. Step 1: Settings>Location access> check 'Wi-Fi & Mobile network location' then uncheck 'GPS Satellite'. Step 2: On your device go to Settings>apps>runnings>Android System> IQServices> Stop. Step 3: Download 'Disable Services' app, open the app and go to android system the uncheck IQServices. That should solve the problem, also I use Wakelock and Greenify. Wakelock allows me to see what apps run while my phone is suppose to be idle and Greenify lets me put apps in hibernation so they wont do anything or process anything unless I actually open the app. I have an ATT G2 by the way..

You can try many things, also the remove battery if you want to do that, its a firmware fault, I even tryed running total stock for some days after full recovery, it comes back. Only fix i have so far is restart the phone a few times untill it works again, then it can work for few hours or sometimes a day. resetting cache moving battery etc. shouldn't help at all. atleast I dont see the logic in removing the battery if you wipe cache...? Someone please explain what els you achieve!
Yeah I'm having the same " android os" wakelock since the latest mj7 update and it's killing the battery! Reboots didn't help much, I'll try the advice above for clearing cache and if it works

For how long have it worked for you? I tried this thing aswel, still ended in a no deep sleep state.. :/
What @onyxogen said makes sense now. I know that on one or 2 occasions, my battery lasted normally and i think i might have started using it right out of the socket. I mean start using it after battery full while still plugged in then disconnect later. But i did it without knowing then... I will try for real now and know for sure.

I did. Doesn't work
I posted this in many posts so far, because I am ****ing mad about no quick optimization for this "so called flagship"! The no deep sleep problem is ****ing huge, they must install something into the kernel that can regonize what apps have multiple uses of alarm_manager or something!
In the end, this problem is nothing we can do anything about. As it is samsung/android that have made the problem. I even tried this restart phone and unplug from charger while screen are on... My phone since 6hours ago have had 2m and 37s deep sleep..
I think it is so poor, that we pay so much for a phone and then the only thing samsung do is just put their trust in having android kitkat fixing it, instead of being proactive....

This would only work if it would be the only reason that stops your phone from entering deep sleep of course, so it's far from sure that it works.
For me it works since 2 weeks, but I have to repeat it every time I disconnect. Sometimes I have longer periods of no deep sleep but if I just plug it out while charging than the bug appears every time if I remember correctly.
It's an partly known android bug, since 4.1 I believe.
Note that you have to use the display for a while before unplugging!

Hmm gotta try use my phone for scrolling forums and mail in the morning then.. didnt know that I would have to use it for some time first.. It actually sounds like that could be the problem, if you say its a well known bug since 4.1... because everyday i do get it fixed after a few resets and then it works rest of the day... untill the next day when its been charged..

[Q] Note 3 random powers down

For about a Week my note 3 started to just power down. Sometimes it happens when I deactivate the lock screen or it might happen when Im just using my phone.

Try FULL wipe (Including wiping internal sd) and then reflash the ROM and see if it still continues, if it does... You might have to take the device in for servicing.
Thanks for the reply. I have triped knox so how can i take it in for a service? Could it be anything else apart from a hardware fault?? Thanks

Well, if it will be a real problem than you should still take it into service, maybe that guy will forget to check the knox.
I'm starting to notice that I'm not getting no power downs when the charging lead is pluged in the phone.
Might it be a battery issue? If so how much does one cost for a note 3?

I had the same problem with my n7100 a few months ago.
the problem was, that one of the 4 battery contacts was a bit dirty (dont ask how this happened :silly, so a hard (or less hard) shake of the phone could interrupt the contact for a moment and the phone restarted.
I know its unlikely, but better check it before sendind it to the service
