Ouya Arcade Cabinet - Ouya General

Just wanted to share a couple pics of an arcade cabinet built using the ouya. This is a link to a video of neon shadow being played on it. The vid is from before we finished the control box. There are some other vids on the same channel. http://youtu.be/sRDOYn7WhJk

I just decided last night that I was going to see if it was practical to use the OUYA instead of an XP machine to power the arcade cabinet that I'm going to be building. I see now that it is. It looks great, man. What did you use for the controls and how did you make them respond to the OUYA?

We are currently using 2 xin-mo boards. One per player. The OUYA will recognize them as USB inputs. Just have to create your own custom file for android to load on startup. This took lots of trial and error. We have got it working with the majority of OUYA games with our gamepad. There are a very few that don't though. You can also use OUYA controllers at the same time for up to whatever amount a players the game allows. Our customer! Controls work great with emulators and with the 2 joystick config are awesome on OUYA fps games also. We just received an arduino board we are going to try to use to add more options and get 100% compatibility with all games. Even at this point there is no reason to use an actual controller unless you want to.

Started painting the cabinet. The trim should really set it off once it's installed.

We do not include any Roms with the cabinet. The OUYA comes the same as it would come out of the box except we add the files necessary for it to work with our controls and setup. It is up to the owner to put whatever games they want on it. It is their cabinet after all. We can sell just the cabinet also and it is easy enough for someone to plug their OUYA in and go. They would just have to copy a few files that would take less than a minute to do.

Thanks!!! The tmolding is suppose to be here today. Hopefully that will be installed in the next few days depending on our work schedule. Once we sell this one I want to build a 4player one for myself. It's way too much fun to play. Using the control box as arcade controls inside on the big screen TV is sweet too.

Don't mind him, he's notorious for trolling. No sane person would think that you are actually including roms as part of the sale.
It seemed like a strange concept at first, but once I thought about it I realized the OUYA probably is the cheapest and best cpu you could build a cabinet with.

Looks pretty awesome. I built an arcade cabinet once, but stupidly did not measure the hallway/door to my room, got pissed, and smashed it to pieces. Looked cool in the garage for a while though.

This is 31.5" wide so it would be a little bit of a pain to get through a 32" door. In the future we probably won't go as deep so they will lighter and easier to get through smaller openings.
We finally found the time and got the tmolding dry fit. Just need to pull it off and then glue it back on. We decided not to do any of the stuff mentioned above to this one except for plexi on the cp and possible a vinyl wrap. The next one will have everything as we have all the parts necessary to do it. We have also built a test 4 player cp. We still need to drill the player and start button holes for each player. Just waiting on the buttons and joysticks for it. We also ordered new hardware for our 2 player cp so we can have all led buttons. The pic of the 4 player top is a mock up with the buttons just sitting in it.

That looks great man. Nice since it's just an HDTV you can always throw in a PC or game console, especially if you're using an Xbox 360 controller as input (haven't read all the details).

Our controls work great with a PC. We used a usb encoder for them. I'm pretty sure they would also work with a USB to console adapter. We haven't tested yet so can't say for sure. Maybe I'll put the kids 360 in when I have time and see how it works. For extended play on games requiring both sticks nothing can beat a controller for comfort though in my opinion. Playing new and old retro games on arcade controls is a blast. Especially having so many different gaming options all in one cabinet.

And is that just painted MDF? Because it looks fantastic in the pics. I just didn't have the patience to paint so many layers when I made my cabinet back in the day. Can't remember if I tried sealing it with glue and water or not...

It's actually just plain particle board. We sunk the screw heads and only had to sand a little. Then some spray paint and brush on polyurethane. After a few layers of poly we sanded it to a smooth surface. Doesn't take much sanding. Then some spray poly to bring back the glossy finish. The poly dries hard, almost like plastic so it's a really durable finish. It's not hard to do but takes some time.

Working on this cabinet now. Should have it done by the end of the week. Just have to decide on what graphics we're gonna go with. It only sits 23" deep so the footprint is a lot smaller. Hopefully we will have a bartop model assembled by then too. Decided to go w/ MDF on these cabs. So much nicer to work with than particle board other than the sealing process.

That's awesome dude. If I ever get the free time I'm definitely gonna have another go at it...unless I go buy the Mortal Kombat II machine that's for sale down the street.

This is amazing work!

Just waiting for the graphics.

Being very impressed by the Vibrants 720P video recording and since my aging 2005ish point and shoot looks like crap compared to it I needed something to hold up the phone while I shoot video.
I am still working on it. It's still in "beta" I need to stableize it and balance it and what not but it works good for FREE! Its very ghetto
So my creative little mind came up with this...

Tripod is a word generally used to refer to a three-legged object, generally one used as a platform of some sort, and comes from the Greek tripous, meaning "three feet".
You have made a 'ghetto' base or 'ghetto' dock.
If you used any duct tape at all, that will also change your device from 'ghetto' to 'redneck' dock.
Now that you have be schooled.. I am gonna finish my beer and wipe the laughter tears outta my eyes. Good show man..
Just as a tip though, on the serious, I was at Walmart and picked up a black plastic business card holder, a little bit of single sided craft felt and cut the felt to fit inside the card holder and made a nice looking base/dock.

So, I had a dream last night.. why not put clay in the opening of the hole to make a soft seating surface and to grip the phone. Then make 4 slits in the bottom of the 'tripod' to worm some velcro straps through.. whala.. tripod to arm strap mount to watch movies while jogging!!
Are you going to post a demo vid?
hahaha, it's ghetto allright. Nice
PROGRESS!
Progress has been made!
I bought some black glossy tape to cover the whole box and its starting to look a hell lot nicer. I will upload pics!

OMG dude.. i am HIGHLY IMPRESSED! Would you think about starting a service, performing this task on other phones?
How difficult/time consuming is it? If we can workout the terms, i would love to have this done to my phone? Also, how likely would it be for us to raise the keys a bit? They arent very pronounced.
I couldn't do it but it defintely works fine. Glad your happy!
@Phen0m
Originally, I wanted to create a replacement keypad. Instead of having the keyboard, you'd open up the Epic and insert the new game pad.
I suppose I could continue work on that, this way I could sell the gamepad by itself to users so they could install it themselves.
But, I don't know how many people would honestly be interested in buying that.
If my effing proxy at work would cooperate I could view it. The website is blocked, but youtube isn't...funny how that works.
that is pretty cool unfortunatly i use my keypad too much and i cant find a free copy of the full droidemu, as iv no credit card to buy off the market.

I saw this on engadget. You could have waited for the gamegrip being developed for the Epic...
@Xhyperion
The game gripper isn't for me. I was looking for more of a PSPgo type of device. I'm not a fan of add-ons and stuff that I have to carry around.
For example, as soon as the Seidio battery extender comes out, I'm picking that up. I don't want to carry around additional batteries. I'm willing to deal with a little extra bulk if it means that my phone lasts twice as long.
Even though it's not for everyone, this is now the perfect device for me.

Hey, what's your take on the keyboard skipping key presses, as discussed over here:

Obviously it looks like your keyboard is registering every press. Do you know if you had any problems before you modded it?

[Q] Silly - how r u going to watch v. in bed? :-)

Funny thing but I do not see an easy solution.
At the moment I am using my netbook, so essentially when I lie in bed and my netbook is on my belly I got top of the screen tilted towards me in order to see the picture clearly (I got Asus 12001N).
I can not belive any of those tablets has screen good enough to watch a film with a completely opposite screen angle (where bottom is closer to you)...
All accessories I have seen will keep tablet under mentioned angle which is not very useful .
I do not think I will be able to hold it still for 2h... or maybe it is not a problem?
Also.... if 3.5 mm jack is on top of the tablet one needs fairly long lead to put it behind screen.
God... waiting for F1 race restart is boring - at least guys at BBC are fairly funny
Personally I have a TV in my bedroom. But I never watch it. I fall a sleep in the living room watching TV then wake up and go to bed in the bedroom. haha, try that maybe. the solution is get a wall mount for your tablet. they make them and they are cheap.
Can't be any more boring then actually watching F1
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Well, race was actually very good - thanks BBC! ;-)
If I put tablet on the wall I dont think I will be able to spot it, not to mention seeing what is on the screen or actually touching it
And I do not have a telly.

Now, it is an idea but a tough one.
Him or R2D2 - either way someone will get jealous.
Try this:
- Lie on your side
- Put the tablet in front of you on portrait mode (so you still see in landscape, because you lie on your side)
- Put pillow behind the tablet to hold it in that position
There you go
I use that for iPad2 when my daughter wants to watch some clips.

1. Thanks - will try. But I see here a great potential for accessories manufacturers - to give us more convenient covers
2. Not much on Polish telly to watch and not much time so netbook and BBC, ITV, Ch4 + hulu, abc, cbs and netflix are more than enough.
VPN sorted out my life as I felt really lost after I came back from UK 2 PL.
I would buy a TV but it would need have to have an option to set up VPN connection or I would have to find a way to connect it through VPN so it would have UK or USA IP.
Now, my only trouble is - how to pay for HULU Plus.
BTW: If any of you is from USA and has a paypal account I would be very grateful for help (no risk for you I send you cash and you pay on my behalf. If one of you would be a "kind soul" please PM me).
3. When you have a tablet or netbook screen 50-80 cm away from your screen I think it is big enough. My netbook is 12.1" (bigger, true) and I really do not miss big telly.

My semi-homemade car mount

Next wee, my g/f and I will take a little car drive vacation. We'll be visiting landmarks from Chicago to Kentucky to Virginia to DC and back. So, earlier today, I got a brilliant idea for a car mount that will enable me to use a 10 inch gps. Well, as soon as I got out, I went straight to a hardware store and got the parts. I use the top part of the following car mount and incorporated it into my set up.
http://www.buyincoins.com/details/n...r-cradle-mount-for-ipad-gps-product-2492.html
Here are some pictures. I test already test drove around. Absolutely no obstruction of view whatsoever. Also does not obstruct my radio and other stuff there.
Total cost for parts = $11.
Edit.
The previous pics were old. Here is a new one that I did right before my DC trip few weeks ago.

pretty cool, looks great it works Awesome
I purposely put it there at the exact height where it won't obstruct my view but if I want I can record everything in front of my car like the police car. I wanna record some videos of our trip as we drive towards some landmarks.
You'll see them on youtube.
Wow !!
You actually drill holes into your dash/glove compartment for those bolts ??
I own the SpiderPodiumTablet from Breffo and it does the job well .... very versatile as you can bend it into any configuration to make it adapt to your surrounding/Car type...etc
check it out here:
http://www.breffo.com/aboutspt.html
I've actually checked those out before. I just couldn't find anything on the market that would (1) not obstruct my view of the road, (2) not block any of my essentials in the car like my cd player and ipod plug in, and (3) be sturdy enough to not wobble when I drive.
And I see nothing wrong with drilling holes in the glove compartment. I actually had nuts behind all of that to keep everything in place.
I like it.
We're taking a trip to the in-laws today, and I have half a mind to let the wife drive so I can fiddle with the GPS.
A serious mount solution is going to come up when I get my Jeep, so seeing stuff like this is another resource for ideas.
Thanks for taking the time to take and post pics.
Most mounts for something like this either suction to glass or comes up from floor with a gooseneck. Neither is ideal. Thats whY I made this. I used to work as a cop before I switched career. This setup kinda reminds me of the old job.

Nicely done! Looks good and I like the placement. I did something similar with a very similar mount I picked up, only I ****ed my '97 Odyssey up even worse by drilling a big hole right in the upper dash. But when you drive a beat up old mini-van, looks are not your top priority.

perhaps I should explain something. I came from a long line of engineers. And one of the first things i learned in life was to not be afraid to be adventurous. Case in point. My neice's clarinet's thumb rest broke. Her teacher sent it to a repair shop for an estimate. The estimate was 125.00. I went ahead and bought a $4 thumb rest and screwed it in for her. There was someone who said to me that I was ruining her clarinet by putting in the thumb rest myself.
The point is if youre not willing to take a chance then there will always be people who wants to take advantage of you.
The past 48 hrs I've replaced 2 bathroom sinks and 3 focits (sp?), polished up 2 bath tubs, put in 4 new pairs of break pads, replaced 2 rotaries, and polished up the homemade mount to make it look much nicer. I'll post some pics in the morning. Been trying to finish everything before our road trip. Gotta the clean the car and get our supplies ready for the road trip tomorrow as well as rotate tires.
I do all of that myself and I'm suppose to worry about a couple of holes in the dash board that can very easily be covered up if need be?
"Normals" will never understand modding, don't bother to try to explain it to them.
Hardware hacking isn't for the faint of heart or those who bow and scrape before such petty little things as "the warranty".

First post ever and they put themselves on the map with flame douchery.
Wonderful start there.
By no means have I ever been afraid to mod. It's what engineers do...or at least the ones that do it for other things other than money haha.
As long as no one dies modding that is.
Here's a sample video taken from my iconia mounted to my car.
Before I bolted the mount into my car, I checked to make sure it was empty behind there. It's also out of the way of the passenger airbag.
During our driving trip to DC and our visits of the monuments and museums, my iconia served as a gps, video camera, and entertainment device. The battery life on this thing is amazing.

[Q] School an old fart on using game emulators

After seeing the Six Axis thread, I was thinking of getting on of those controllers to start playing some games from the past on my tab. I see in the "Working Apps" thread there are a slew of different emulators based on what console you're trying to emulate. So, question 1: Is there a emulator that is some what of a one-does-all?
Second question: Do I rely on the market for game ROMs? Or are roms one of those topics where they're illegal and I must RTFM where ever I can find them?
Third question: Are ROM formats pretty much universal? For example, if there are two different NES emulators out there, will ROMs be in a format where I can only play it on a certain emulator?
If all of this is covered, please feel free to call me an idiot, and kindly redirect me, as I didn't find anything immediately covering emulators for a 31 year old "newb" as far as emulators are concerned.
The closest to an "all in one" emulator is MAME, which can emulate a variety of 80's/90's arcade machines. Otherwise, you're looking at different emu's for each machine type.
ROMs are illegal unless you own the original, which is unlikely. You won't get any of these on the Android market but they're easily findable with a little googling.
ROM images all use universal formats appropriate to what they're emulating. All emu's will read this standardised format. A Commodore 64 game ROM will work on and Commodore 64 emulator but obviously, is different to a game ROM for a Commomdore Amiga, for example.
And don't worry, we don't call people with sensible questions, idiots.
You nailed everything on the head I was looking for. I am very fmailiar with MAME (concept of it anyways), but I always reserved to using the term MAME when talking about making your own MAME with like a full TV, PC and such... is there a "MAME app"? I'll likely go the route of a different emulator for each console, and I have access to a private site with tons of games, I just never bothered looking to see if the format was a standard. Thanks a million! I think I just got a little nerd chub. Cant wait to play Legend of Zelda again.
Hehe, there IS a MAME app for Android, should be on the market somewhere.
Emulation on Android hasn't yet reached the stability of emulation on PC's, (especially when it comes to MAME) but it's off to a good start. Search the Market for MAME4droid - its based on quite an early version of MAME, and unfortunately there are more non-working ROM's than working ones. If you're willing to just use your PC, there is an emulator frontend called Maximus Arcade which is often used in emulator cabinets. It is a frontend that has support for several different emulators, so you just need to choose the system, and then you will see your list of games. You'll need to get a different emulator for each system, then configure Maximus Arcade so it knows where to find them. Just google it, there's tons of useful documentation on the subject. I'm a bit of a self proclaimed emulation expert, so feel free to ask more questions, either here or by PM
Its been a dream of mine to one day build a mame cabinete, so maybe I'll hit you up if that ever comes to be. Thanks for the info. I may still look that up as my primary pc is an htpc already connected to my tv. Thanks!

Yeah, I know what you mean. My best friend and I are currently working on such a project. We put $35 into an older used P4 tower and $40 for a 19" CRT (supporting 2048x1536!!!) so after only $75, we've already tackled a big part of it. By the time we get some wood to build a cabinet, an X-Arcade Tankstick (look this up, it's sweet!) and a few other little things, we'll have about $500-600 invested into the cabinet, and the resale value of the complete unit would be about $300-400 more, but selling is the last thing on our minds. At this point, we've mainly worked on the software end, but it's been a lot of fun. Even after the pain and frustration of dealing with MAME (it can be quite picky), it's quite rewarding when everything finally falls together. I just can't wait to build the actual cabinet!
So, the SixAxis app only works on rooted devices, which counts me out since IO have updated to the OTA 3.2 and really don't want to bother with downgrading and all that jazz. There is another app, USB/BT Joystick, that says it works with many controllers. I really like the PS3 Dual Shocks, but the app says the wireless PS# controllers will be supported soon. The wireless joysticks have a micro USB plug for charging, but can the USB plug also be used as a wired connection?

Go to tmart.com there wired remotes are a lil over 10 dollars and ship from NY, takes about 5 days to show up.
Sweet, ordered, thanks!
OK, so after next week, I'll have the following, let me know if this setup sounds about right
- 15 foot HDMI cable: I've had this and know it works flawlessly hooked up to my receiver, so no problems here
- Ordered a wired PS3 controller from tmart.com at the suggestion of cmlucht
- Was going to try and use the USB/BT Joystick Center app to map the keys
- SNESoid app for emulation
- And a TON of SNES games
Should have my controller next Wednesday. If anyone else has no other suggestions, I should be rocking SNES games on my TV in a week. I am friggin nerdin out here.
did did you get to pick your free gift from tmart? Sometimes they give a free gift with orders, I buy all my green and blue lasers and my sons 360 stuff in there and my ps3 controller.
You got me all excited, but I just went back through all the emails I've gotten so far from tmart and did not have anything mentioning a free gift. Oh well, I'll consider the great price a gift.
Got my a500 on a stand with an HDMI cable and Xbox 360 wired controller and it works fine. portable SNES.
Ugh, didn't check my mail yesterday, and now I checked the tracking from work today and see the controller was delivered yesterday . Have to wait a few hours and check it when I take my lunch. I feel like a kid on his birthday.
Got the emulator working with the new remote, now I just gotta filter through the 4,333 roms I have to decide which to keep...

so are you liking the remote? I have always had good luck with tmart and they sell so much diff stuff
So far the remote has been pretty good. I played it for about 4 hours last night, just Zelda though. I need to find a way to mount the external_sd directory to somewhere within the /sdcard/ folder so the emulator can pick up my games.
