Trouble Updating S4 AT&T - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

So I've had this problem for a while and I think at one point I knew what the issue was, but things came up and I guess I lost my place. I have a GS4 running 4.3 on AT&T, but if I recall correctly it took a long time (longer than it was supposed to in US) for even that update to become available to me. I'm not sure if this phone is set as a different country or something, but I seem to think that had something to do with it when I checked last time. Now when I check for updates, it does say I have an available update (KitKat?) but fails when attempting to update. Download is successful, but install is not. Baseband is I337ucuemk2 if that helps anything. Any help here would be appreciated, thanks.

Install is failing as some of the files it is trying to update has been modified. You would have to be on stock for the update to work.
Remember that there is no direct root method for KitKat yet.

Have you changed any system files and do you have xposed running? They'll break the ota.
Edit, I should have read closer. I think there is an update.zip file you could flash in the general forum. I'll look and see if I can find it.

Ok cool, thanks again...however now another issue. I've tried several times, I can not boot into recovery. Any time I try to the phone just goes black until I let go and then reboots. Even if I get the blue print in the top left, the phone does not boot into recovery. Any idea why this would be?

Me either, guess I'd just flash normally like I would a rom? Or would an update be different. I haven't done this in a while.

If you flash the tar in Odin it's going to wipe your device so backup what you can. You'll need to download the tar file to your pc and download Odin to it too if you don't already have it. You run Odin from the pc

So... pretty unhappy. Downloaded the update.zip and flashed in stock recovery, it wiped my whole phone and still didn't update. I saw a couple error messages appear as it was "updating" so now I'm still on old firmware and lost everything on my phone. Luckily I did a Kies backup but still pretty ridiculous. I still lose all save data from apps and all convenience that there was from using my phone for as long as I did. Just wanted to update, shouldn't be this big of a mess. Not sure what to do next.

That's what I did and I'm finally updated, but pretty disappointed that it took all that just for an update. Hopefully things like that don't continue in future updates...

EA28 OTA

I just activated my girlfriend's phone and immediately it prompted for update, so I did. To my surprise it was not DL09, but instead EA28. So after some google searches I found this:
http://phandroid.com/2011/02/03/samsung-fascinates-ea28-update-coming-to-fix-emergency-calling-bug/
The site is basically right, they repackaged dl09 with the emergency calling bugfix and pushed it out with a new build number.

One Click root works just fine! Just completed root!
I believe I was able to root successfully but when I try to flash ClockwordMod, it doesn't seem to be working. ROM manager says its flashed and has the latest version, but when I boot into recovery it is definitely not ClockwordMod. I cannot do backups or choose a file from SD to install.

Update broke my phone!
I just saw a screen forcing the update upon my phone. I clicked "OK" but when the EA28 update installed itself on my phone, it locked my phone into a cycle of trying to install it again and again. The baseband version shows S:i500.04 V.EA28, the Build number shows SCH-I500.EA28, but the update keeps trying to install the update. It gives a Prompt to Install-Reboots Phone-Prompt to Install-Reboot Phone... I managed to get it to stop for a little while by scheduling a deferral of the update until tomorrow. Does anyone know how I can keep the update from trying to install?
Yeah I just went to ask if there is an update and it said yes. Afraid to update because who knows if it'll break root....

Why suggest people to mess with pit in odin? You do NOT need to do this. Geez, people make this mistake enough on their own. Pda, choose file, press start... thats it.

I managed to get my phone to stop rebooting every 3 minutes by ending the InnoPath Active Care process and clearing the cache. But when I woke up this morning, the phone was at the emergency recovery screen. It went into a cycle of rebooting that made it as far as media scanner. I got it to stop rebooting by turning ON wifi (I suppose that's because Active Care needs WiFi off to do an OTA). Does anyone have any suggestions on how to stop this "Feature" that is rebooting my phone?

Yes, use Odin. I assume you have an i337 and you don't have mf3 installed. Get the mdl stock firmware from sammobile.com. You'll have to register but its free. You'll download a zip file. Use 7-zip to extract the .tar.md5 file. Use that file in Odin, PDA. Only have auto-reboot and f.reset checked in Odin. That will install the stock firmware and recovery on your phone.
Edit, a word of caution. As of now, there is no way to reverse your decision of wanting the mf3 update. Once you update you will not be able to put a custom Rom or recovery on your phone. There is limited benefit, my opinion no benefit, to the up grade. Yes you can put apps on your ad card, but only the apps and not the data do you don't save much space. It also take about a gig of additional space just for the update.
so it will be as if you just took it out of the box brand new, right? I don't want any files from twrp or anything to stay on the phone. I accidentally factory restored one time when rooted.... then after starting up the "new" device, the setup worked until one step which didn't allow me to surpass it... i used Odin and followed a youtube vídeo to unroot. also, will it restore my SD card...? if I take out the SD, will it be readable after I put it back in after the startup of the "new" device? thanks. and lastly, does it matter if ive freezes any apps via titanium backup? I've freezed the att updater so the update wouldn't remove root. thanks for your help guys. (yes I'm using the att i337 model.)

Odin will over write any of your frozen files you froze to avoid the upgrade. Factory reset will also delete your apps. Any pics, music, etc will not be deleted.
And yes to your sd card, it should still be readable. Odin shouldn't touch the external card.

It will delete twrp and put the stock recovery on. There is always a chance of a brick when you flash. If you do flash it it'll probably take 10 to 20 minutes so let it do it's thing. Don't panic and unplug anything. Time goes by real show while you're waiting. I just flashed Odin today on my device and it seemed to take forever.

If all it does is go into download mode. Then you are lucky in a way because you can Odin back to stock which fixes almost all issues. This will delete you data, more than likely. Which is only apps, messages, calls, not your pictures on internal storage.

It sucks. But stuff like this happens. And being rooted you have to know the risks of flashing and modding your phone. And its not that bad. Its exactly the same as wiping your phone to install a new ROM. You delete all the same stuff. Not hard to get back up and running.

No do not do this! Just go to tarp site and get the twrp tar file for the version you want. Then use Odin to load twrp recovery. This way you won't lose everything. Also to boot to recovery you can just use power and volume up. More than likely twrp didn't flash correctly so you have no recovery. Flashing it with Odin may solve the problem.

He specifically stated he didn't want to wipe. Plus why return completely to stock if there is no need. You SPARKY need to settle down and try to give useful information for a persons particular problem. Running around like a chicken with its head cut off for a simple recovery missflash. Then to try and bash me because I actually helped him not to have to set everything up again. What if he didn't have a proper nandroid or hadn't ran a recent TB backup. Then he would have lost all data. Now all is well. Check post 7 if you missed the part where he is asking for a better way.

He didn't say he didn't want to wipe until after. He didn't say that when I told him to Odin back to stock. I am settled. Lol. At the time that was the only way I knew we to resolve this so I gave him that option. It was good that you guys knew about the tar version of the recovery.
Now I learned something new.

What thread did you get your boot animations from?
Flashable zips or pushed with a file explorer?
What firmware are you on as well?

Sounds like you have a stock recovery installed so you can't flash anything. If you are on the MDL firmware install a custom recovery from Goo Manager. If you are on MF3 you can't install a custom recovery and can't flash anything.
From MF3 you can copy and paste from a root level file explorer. Use extreme caution since there is no firmware available to flash with Odin should you get yourself in trouble.
I'm sorryi have no coy how to get a custom recovery. . Do I need me computer to get a new custom recovery? What is the mdl and mf3? Sorry im new to all this stuff
I suggest finding out what firmware you have first, then reading as much as possible about custom recoveries and the like.

Download goomanager and under settings select install openrecoveryscript after it installs it should ask you if you want to reboot into recovery (TWRP). Your should also research TWRP before doing this

Jeezus! Does no one listen to me? OP has not even specified what firmware he is on... That could lead to a bricked phone. There is more important stuff to figure out first. OP is obviously new at this and needs to read up on the more important stuff before messing with anything else, including system files.

Good job, not knowing what firmware he's on you could have caused him to brick his device. Listen to graydiggy, he knows what he's taking about.
Edit, didn't see the second page of the posts so I'm late to the party but my comments still stand.

My bad. I did suggest researching TWRP before doing anything though. Regardless, I apologize.

[Q] How do I stop ATT update?

First off I apologize if this is in the wrong section or has been asked before, I couldn't really find the answer I'm looking for.
So I have my S4 (4.2.2 if it matters) rooted and TWRP recovery loaded on it. I was getting the ATT update message and I kept hitting ignore or remind me latter, however I noticed last night it starts to try to install and restart without giving me an option to cancel it. I quickly remove the battery to prevent my phone from updating.
My question is, how do I stop this update when I turn my phone back on? I don't want it to update the firmware and lock my boot loader. Or am I making a big deal over nothing?
Thanks in advance

Thanks so much.
Just one more think, I just want to make sure that when I turn my phone back on that the update won't finish installing (it was in the process of installing when I shut it off).
Thanks again for all the help.
I'm assuming that u have MDB/MDL firmware. ......Take your Att sim card out. ... u need to root your phone. ... install Titanium back up and go to Att software update app ....back up first just incase u need it to return to att and then uninstall it...... that's should stop it from OTA update
SWYPED_FROM_S4_MF3_REDVENOM
Yep, you're going to want to root and then rename or freeze those files, you found in the Google search. That will stop the update
Taking just the SIM out at this point won't help. Only way to completely stop it now since it was installing is to Odin back to MDL and start the root process.

So not to keep asking the same question, when the sim card is out of the phone, will that prevent the update from installing?
Also to clarify, I've already rooted my phone and installed TWRP recovery. Again at this point I just want to make sure that when I turn my phone on the update isn't going to automatically finish installing before I can block the app/files
Again, thanks so much for the help, can't wait to get a rom installed and start enjoying the awesomeness
I'd follow graydiggy suggestion. Don't turn it on except to go into download mode. Flash the mdl firmware, then root again and freeze the update apps or install a custom Rom
I could be wrong but I believe the update won't apply since the stock recovery has been replaced with a custom recovery . If I am wrong Im sure somone will come in and correct this statement .

Won't matter
If you have a custom recovery, the update should fail the install with an error 7. However, I would still completely start from scratch by using Odin to get a clean slate without an update. You could actually use Kies and do the emergency restore. Whatever you do, do not boot the phone into the OS until it has been completely wiped by either Odin or Kies. Only download mode.

boot into recovery and in twrp manually go erase the update.zip from cache/fota. Then wipe cache before rebooting. That, or flash the PIT file. I posted directions on how to extract the stock signed PIT file but you'll probably need someone to extract one for you since you dont want to boot to Android yet.

Oh yeah. TWRP has a file manager. Delete the update and then boot the OS and use Titanium Backup to delete the OTA stuff

Sweet so by doing this I don't have to Odin back to stock?
Essentially.

Thank you everyone so much for your help. I seem to have got it all sorted out, don't see any changes to the baseband version and still have root access.
Thanks again.

Glad you got it worked out. You had the A team, surge and graydiggy
a different approach w/ i537 jb4.2.2
on topic but with different variables... I'm not finding a detailed post on the best way to stop ATT update immediately after rooting the i537 jb4.2.2
Can someone link me here please?
Not sure if I should just delete the app or go the root explorer route and delete the knox file (not sure if that is the only file to remove either?)
I have compiled all my notes at: freehelpinghands.wordpress DOT com/2013/12/15/best-way-to-unlock-root-a-new-phone/
and the answer to my question above will likely be answered by the time this is being read.
