Hey guys, thought I would try and leave a quick tip over something interesting I found.
The day I updated my Note 3 to the official 4.4.2 OTA, I stupidly installed Nova Launcher Prime (I should have waited before changing anything on my device so I could monitor potential battery drain issues with the new software). I started noticing that my battery would drain 20-40% more during the day than it had been doing since I got the phone in December. On a light day, I was plugging in at night with about 80% remaining, after the KK update, it was more around 50-60%. And on a full charge, I would get no more than 3 hours of screen-on time, which is pathetic considering I used to be able to get 5-6. I figured this was just Kit Kat doing its thing.
But then I started to get mad and wondered how I could solve this. After deleting some apps/games that I thought might have been running rogue processes, and changing around a few settings, I noticed no immediate benefit. I was about to just factory reset, when I realized I had installed Nova the same day I got the update. At first, Nova completely slipped my mind as a potential battery drainer, because why would a home screen replacement do that? I removed Nova from my system, rebooted, and then threw it on the charger overnight.
It's been 5 days now, and my battery life is back to where it was when I first took it out of the box. I thought this was weird, since Nova is extremely popular and not once have I ever heard about battery life complaints from the user base. Sure enough, on the Note 3 subreddit this morning, there is a post regarding Nova killing someone's battery, and a few users confirmed the same.
I chimed in there as well, but wanted to come here to let you all know that removing Nova from my system and going back to the default TW launcher gave me back a dramatic amount of my battery life which I had thought I lost due to the 4.4.2 update. I don't know if it's a Kit Kat thing, a Nova thing, or a Note 3 thing, or some combination. I know how popular the "stock" Android look is around here, and figured maybe a good deal of you guys are running Nova. If you're noticing higher than usual battery drain and have Nova, try removing it, to see if it helps.

The dev of Nova is inactive for like 6 months now. Most people think he made his money and abandon the project.
To OP,
I still love NOVA bought the prime long ago. Use it everyday on every single rom that I install on my note 3. Never the case of drain. I use it on both KK and JB rom. Granted I never use official KK rom so I can't comment on that but with all the custom roms, I haven't had a single issue. Great on battery life, smooth and fast.
Since Nova is a problem for you, I can suggest try the Apex Launcher. Both Apex and Nova are very similar to each other. Hope Apex doesn't act the same on your phone.

I am pretty sure he had other issues with his life is what I heard. I don't think he just took the money and ran, but that is always a possibility!
And to OP I use Nova Launcher (non prime) on and off between themer and it doesn't have much effect at all ~2% most of the time.
Maybe try reinstalling it or refreshing your phone.
Didn't notice any issues with Nova
I've been using Nova Launcher for a long time now and didn't notice any battery drains after official KK update.
Yup nova is draining almost none of my battery here.
Goes to show that each device is different.

I've never noticed any increase in battery drain when using Nova. Been using it for years. Although I admit, I feel like changing launchers since it seems its been abandoned along with Tesla Unread and WidgetLocker. Its unfortunate. Still works well considering it hasn't been updated in 6 months and continues to work after a major OS update.
I will eventually move to Apex or just go all natural with GEL.
Thank you so much for this thread! I was so worried and thought I needed to either factory exchange, or get a warranty exchange. I, too, have been suffering from horrendous battery drain using Nova Prime since and after the Kit Kat update. Prior to the update, my battery would drain anywhere from .80 - 1% per hour. Still not the amazing life others report, but that's pretty good to me. After the Kit Kat update, my battery would drain anywhere from 3 - 4% per hour! I had no idea what was causing the issue. I had thought Kit Kat was supposed to make things better. I was looking at the system processes, but nothing seemed unusual. So glad I found this thread. I will stop using Nova and see what happens in the next 48 hours!
Ugh, two hours into reverting to stock TW, and no dice! Down to 94% battery, already! For the OP, did you have to literally COMPLETELY uninstall Nova, or did you just disable/revert back to TW or another launcher?? I'm so friggin' frustrated with this B.S.!
nova prime user here. I have had other apps be the culprit of battery drain, but not nova on 4.4.2
Is there any benefit using let's say, kcin build on 4.4 aosp over nova which is 4.0 and later? I did try kcin launcher and seems much smoother.

I suddenly started having battery drain issues, but it was Lookout that was killing my battery 50% plus per day and the phone was sitting idle. I didn't even put Nova Launcher back on yet but I will at some point this week.

94% after 2 hours of use is pretty damn good. idk why you are complaining lol.
Update:
Yeah, it was almost definitely Nova draining my battery while in standby. Very very light use today, nearly half an hour of screen-on time, but my standby time is back to being fantastic.

I don't use Nova and was having major battery drain. Found it was the new FB and Google+. I reverted to an older FB and disabled G+, getting 28+ hours on a charge with decent usage.

As much as I loved Nova, I switched to APEX. It bothers me to use something that I know is abandoned and will never get another update or support.
I saw that there's a new beta of Tesla Unread which adds more apps - so could be the dev hasn't completely abandoned it.

I posted this on another forum... and got some positive feedback.
The update just miraculously increased my battery life tenfold!
I am 7 hours 12 minutes in and I am at 80% (using the battery indicator provided in settings, not by battery widget). I unrooted to install the update (yet it feels like I still have Herver's ROM). Brightness at 50%.
I didn't use the phone that much today (I had class), but I used it inbetween breaks and whatnot. I guess pretty light usage.
I think the update messed with the radio/wifi performance.
What about you guys?
Edit: I know people have gotten 20+ hours with ROMS, but this is without one.
Hopefully ROMS increase the battery life even more.

Hi patelkedar,
I can't speak for everyone, but according to myself and other users that have responded to my post battery life improvement has been absolutely astounding as of this update.
Blah. Sorry for double thread.
Search didn't go so well I guess.
Anyway, seems like everyone has seen major improvement.
Totally agree. My battery life has improved vastly. I came from fresh 0.3 and EvolutionX. I had excellent battery life with both of those roms too. But I unrooted to give htc a shot at stock again and I am happy. Phone has been off charger since 7:30am and it's now 3:05pm, with moderate usage and on wifi i'm at 78%. I don't know what I would do without my EVO. I love this damn device.
My battery life is phenomenal with the stock update. I was one of the ones who took the plunge and lost the ability to root for the time being but its performing so well I really don't care. They made everything run better and the battery was just a bonus.
unevoked not working after 1.4xxx update
I uninstalled the superpermissions and unrevoked before updating. now it will not root obviously. tried to install setcpu and various other programs but will not work. this sucks.. i see no difference in battery life or speed....a lot of people think an update is a good thing sometimes, but it is not. HTC should just release froyo 2.2
Pretty much if you have alot of Facebook friends the battery life savings will be huge with this update, also if you use a Flickr account battery savings will be huge, it seems they fixed the issue with Flickr causing 100% awake time as well but didn't mention it...crossing my fingers anyway, so far haven't run into the issue after resetting up my Flickr Account.
P.S. The update seems very much worth losing root for now as it seems to have fixed many things not metnioned and some functions are way faster now, going to manage applications loads in 2-3 seconds now versus 10-20 before etc... There seem to be alot of fixes not mentioned.
You guys mind posting your settings?
I'm at 9 hours and 40 minutes with exactly 50% battery remaining, but I haven't been using the phone like crazy. Some light web use and decent amount of texting all throughout the day. This is not an improvement from the pre-update era. Pretty much the same

HTC has released it already. It's Sprint now that has to smooth it over and make sure that it is compatible with their stock applications before releasing it to the masses.

Phone also all around seems smoother in the sense UI especially. I'm enjoying my EVO again and actually using it as a cell phone now instead of a super-rapid-fire-rom-flashing addiction-device. Sometimes I forget that my cell phone is a cell phone and not a netbook (yet) lol. Cheers to HTC for the update!

Ditto. I don't miss the custom ROMs, honestly. I haven't had a single FC since this ROM launched and the device feels much smoother and faster.
Ok, so I've had my SGN for little under a month for the first few weeks I had it I was getting great battery life, almost 6 hours screen time full day of battery etc.. Then I rooted it using one click root because I wanted some more access, since then battery life has seemingly been slowly getting worse. I have tried changing back to stock roms and custom roms, I've fully discharged the battery and charged while it is off a number of times but I'm down to 3 hours screen time and can't get a full day out off it anymore.
Is this something to do with the way I rooted, what can I do test and try and get back my battery life, this is the main reason I got this phone..
It's hard to say if it was the first update I installed/rooting or something wrong with the way I'm charging but it's certainly decreased even on a stock ROM without installing anything..
Anybody else encountered this?

I have the same "feeling" with my Note. I have installed System Panel to monitor usage but I can't find anything specific that seems to be sucking the power. But it certainly "feels" like my battery is draining faster than before.
It's probably as the phone gets older, you install more & more Apps. Some of these are probably working in the background sucking your battery.

Try Rocket Rom v17 or latest XXLA1 firmware and your battery life will come back even better than before, just me
Same "feeling" here! I will try LA1 firmware....
So I'm currently sitting on 4.30 hours screen time, 15 hours uptime with 20% battery remaining.
Running la1 firmware and la3 modem, been using stock browser. Taking lots of photos with flash too, so I think this combo has rectified my issues but I know there's more potential as this is roughly the same stats I got on my dhd, although that was underclocked and tweaked to the clappers.
Faith is resetored in my device, hopefully it improves.

KitKat didn't kill battery life. Mine is about the same as it was before KitKat. In about 99.999% of the time an app is to blame. I have a simple but arduous method to find the app that's killing your battery.
I agree the battery has taken a hit. I used to ave about 9hrs of screen on time, now about 6hrs. I also have the chromecast issue. Strange thing is that sometimes the screen doesnt even show up In the battery stats. Sometimes the usage time doesnt change when it shows in battery stats. I am stock, 32gb white US model updated with Kies. I have done many factory resets. I have tried it for 2 days without installing any apps or disabling any samsung bloat, with no change in the tablest behavior.

Kitkat sent my note into fits. Battery life was terribly erratic at first. Dropping 30% in an hour, then suddenly jumping back up by 10%.
I tried factory reset.... nothing changed. Then I used the Battery Callibration app from playstore. Ran it and followed instructions exactly. (Waited til it was charged 100%, then run the program, then completely drain battery, then let it charge continuously back up to 100%).
Go figure............ since then things have calmed down and I am getting the same battery life as on my old Jellybeans note. (I know, because I've got two of these tablets and literally compared them side by side.)
Or, it could also be that after firmware upgrade things need a bit of time to settle down. Hope this helps.

Yeah, I am used to android taking a bit to settle in. After my note 3 updated, it seems like it took a month to get back to my "normal". I hope the tablet does too, just frustrating in the mean time
Mine settled down after about 3 days and several resets. Now the battery seems comparable to pre-KitKat.
I don't think it is kit Kat. I'm running kit Kat and easily see 9 hours of screen on. It is most likely an app you have installed that is doing it.

Then not everyone would then mention that it is not change or improved (in stand-by).
No, normally a app or bad file on the sd-card is killing here the battery. All tools to find this out, are already mentioned here. Good luck.
4.4 in and of itself isn't causing poorer battery life. In fact, owners of other devices are reporting improvements. The Exynos N3 for example. There aren't any battery life issue threads on the Pro forums and they have the same h/w and we're most likely using their 4.4 drivers and kernel. There are threads like this in every device forum when an Android version upgrade is released. It's almost always due to a bad flash or a rogue app or service. That and older apps that haven't been updated in ions and aren't playing well with the new OS. People here have reported shorter charging time and longer battery life. So what's being discussed isn't universal. I'd suggest doing a stock recovery and reviewing older apps and those that aren't developed by known and larger developers.
I have a Shield and S4 too. For every poster raving, there seems an opposite view on battery life and the SD card issue.
The SD issue makes battery life debates moot. Google has an Apple wannabe syndrome. Perhaps they will rebrand as Goople.
You can recalibrate the battery by running it down below 20% then recharging. I have seen it recommended to do this every 30 days or so.
My Note 3 with KitKat started using 20-30% of the battery at night while it was idle. Looked and looked and couldn't find a clue to the problem. Decided to reboot, the next night it was fine, used maybe 2-3%

I did have charging problem and battery drain right after KK update. I have to do the Factory Data Reset. Luckily my tablet is back to normal if not better. I did spend sometime go thru all setting. So I managed to get 4 hrs of screen time with moderate use and I still have about 59% of battery.
So I say kk is good or better then jellybean

I loved my Note 10.1 2014 out the box that I decided not to root. So it's factory stock and suck very bad.
If it's a bad app I can find it. It worked flawlessly before the upgrade.

Hello everyone,
i am a very happy owner of a Note 4 model N910U besides the terrible battery life.
At first I didn't complain (used to my nexus 5) but after reading through the forum i got super dissapointed.
I am full stock, with some bloatware deactivated and no root. Unfortunately working for big G i am not allowed to customize anything (root included) as they would find out as soon as i connect to the corporate wifi. Yes, i tried and got a very scary email the second day.
I usually keep wifi activated, auto-brightness and nova launcher. I read here that nova can impact battery life but also with the ugly TW there is almost no difference. I never got more than 3 SOT and absolutely never got close the 5-6 SOT that i saw on the forum.
I've attached some SS and if someone can spot something wrong it would be great.
Thanks!

There are so many posts about "Why is my battery bad" in the "Note 4 Battery Thread" already. But here are some tips anyway...
You have a lot of wakelocks:
1. Is "Location Reporting" in "Location" switched ON? Switch this OFF
2. Google Play Services and Android System are high, there could be an app that is behaving badly like Weather app refreshing too often, Instant Messaging, Email Syncs.
Thanks will ask over there. Feel free to close the thread. And thanks for the tips!

I rooted my SM-G930V, and I am experiencing some heat from the phone when it is sleeping- not so much when it is unlocked and operating.
As for battery drain- I have not noticed any major loss in battery usage.
There also seems to be a significant speed issue with speed- took around 5 seconds to open the settings app, But this can be fixed by
editing CPU governor from interactive to ondemand with Kernel Aduitor.
I am looking into this article to fix the heat issue: http://forum.xda-developers.com/ver...guide-to-fix-s7-lag-root-s7-variants-t3441715
Stang5litre rom and you wont regret it
You can do a lot with various Xposed modules and other root apps to mitigate the drain, but there is some drain nonetheless. SOT takes a bit of a hit. Standby time, it's negligible.
I recommened personally sticking to stock. I use to be rooted and between battery life and issues I went back to stock. This was before the roms came out. I have a new born and a family I can't play around with signal dropping, phone restarting, lagging and whatever else. I like stock with nougat beta. If the bootloader ever gets unlocked or something else that interests me to root maybe one day but not worth it for me right now.

With Stang5litre's rom I've have zero problems.
There is no way with any rom or any app (unless it is magical and brand new) that you aren't having issues with this phone and root. I tried every app I could and 2 roms available here for it as well and it was still laggy with terrible battery life. I held on with this phone as long as I could hoping for a better root method but I couldn't wait any more. The performance after a few apps and kernel changes is still terrible compared to stock. The battery life after fixes and kernel changes is equally as terrible. I was getting around 1 hour and 10 mins of SOT before it was completely dead. I loved the phone and stock it had great performance and battery life, but that eng kernel for root just destroys it. I NEED root on my phone or I would have kept it stock. Word of advise, keep this phone stock or sell it and get something that can be rooted and actually stay usable.
