ODIN flash of PhilZ not working - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am trying to install PhilZ recovery using ODIN, and its not taking. Was wondering if someone would throw a quick lifeline to me.
In ODIN, loaded philz_touch_6.26.6-klte.tar.md5 (MD5: 7C12BE66039B60731CA20DDECFF71A92) into the PDA slot
Only checked reboot and f.reset time
S5 into download mode by vol down+home+power
COM port shows up in ODIN
Start
Xfer's fine, and phone reboots normally
Shut down, and booted into the stock recovery instead of PhilZ
Repeated above but no check of reboot
At end of xfer, three-fingered again per instructions if you reboot into normal recovery, but once again, stock recovery.
Anything special about Sprint S5's?

EDIT: Figured it out. Its vol UP, not vol DOWN to get into recovery.

[Q] Trouble installing recovery via Odin

Hi all. Could use some help. Not sure which step I am missing. I followed the Philz Touch instructions below and flashed the MD5 recovery package with Odin. First with the "Auto Reboot" option ticked, then without. Odin says successful but I can't seem to get it to boot into recovery. Am I using the wrong three buttons? When I tried it just came up the battery charging logo.
Should I not have "F. Reset Time" ticked?
boot into download mode
start odin3 and configure it as in picture below
connect phone in download mode to PC via USB
press start to flash the tar.md5 package
normally, phone should auto-reboot into recovery.
If it reboots into main system and your recovery remains stock, repeat above steps and untick "autoreboot" in odin. Once flash is done, keep pressing the 3 buttons combo to for a reboot into recovery. You should see the new CWM
when in recovery, if you choose option "reboot system now" and you get "yes - disable flash recovery", select that option to avoid stock recovery overwriting cwm
Anyone? Can someone simply verify the 3-button reboot sequence?
I have a newly rooted Sprint GS4 which I updated to MF9 before rooting. I used Odin 1.85 to root it. I am now looking to install a custom recovery and kernel and eventually experiment with some different ROMs. I decided to go with the PHILZ Touch CWM based recovery and flashed the correct tar.md5 file based on his instructions listed here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=39433857&postcount=4. However, I am running into the issues that he addresses regarding the phone auto-rebooting back into the main system and not into the newly installed recovery. I did as he said and un-checked the "auto reboot" option and tried again a couple times. Once it seemed to get stuck on the downloading screen when i unplugged the device after successful install via Odin, then I tried the same leaving the phone plugged into the computer and it seemed to get stuck on the battery charging logo. I am deftly afraid of bricking this thing so I was hoping someone who's done this can explain exactly which step I am missing. Thanks very much and thanks for the noob thread.

With the phone powered off, press and hold the power and volume up buttons, and when the phone vibrates, release the power button but not the volume button. You should get a screen saying booting recovery, followed by the recovery ROM.

[Q] (i9500) I flashed the leak of Lollipop and can't initiate in recovery mode

Hi, I flashed this monday the leak of Lollipop for Samsung Galaxy S4 (9500) and after I followed all the steps one by one I'm the only one in earth that isn't able to start the phone in the recovery mode. For this reason I can't flash gapps. I am not able to downgrade even because for the KNOX.
Someone has the same problem? Can anyone figured out how to enter in recovery mode?
P.D: I have attempted to do it with the buttons (vol down + pow + home) and with adb and the usb connected to the phone. Anyone was the solution.

after flashing Rom with Odin you have to flash openrecovery-twrp-2.8.4.0-klte.tar
Installing Recovery and rooting steps :
1- download twrp from here
2- go to flash mode
3- run Odin load file as AP then click start
4- go to recovery by powering off your device and hold volume up + home + power button
5- when you want to reboot to system Twrp will ask you to install SuperSU (rooting your device)
6- swipe to confirm
More info here

I did all of this, still can't to initiate in recovery mode.
i had the same problem, try downloading philz (philz_touch_6.48.4-i9500) or twrp recovery (openrecovery-twrp-2.8.4.0-i9500) and install via odin (AP box)
I didn't try the above i just installed the rom again, doing this:
- only the AP file
- uncheck "auto reboot"
- After the process finishes dont reboot the phone to tw, just go to the recovery mode and the wipe cache/data
- Install philz or twrp via odin

So, flash the ROM again with nothing more than the AP box fullfiled and then, when it finishes hold (vol up + power + home). Wipe cache, restart and flash custom recovery.
Am I right?

It can not, because in the first flash has deleted the modem, bootloader, csc and others, so if flashing only AP will not operate the phone, only the PDA.
And masicen these questions have to do in the same thread firmware also behold the solution.
Flashes the firmware again, to start turn it off and go into Recovery by: Volume Up + Home + Power in this order and holding down until you see the Samsung logo there S4 loose and enter the stock recovery, do wipes and restart it, then download Philz Touch in its latest version and flash it with Odin and restart turn it off and try to enter the recovery now.-

Have flashed TWRP image using ODIN but it still boots into regular bootloader

I followed the forum instructions to flash TWRP onto my N910F Note 4 according to instructions: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55277852&postcount=3
All works fine. But when I reboot into the bootloader I still get the original bootloaded with the "Downloading Do not turn off target" notice.
On that tutorial it does say at the end that if the recovery hasn't changed then to uncheck the auto-reboot option. Did that, but same again.
What could I do?
Download mode is nothing to do with recovery.
You flashed a custom recovery, therefore you'll need to boot into recovery, not bootloader (download mode in Samsung phones). Power off your phone, then hold power, home and vol up to access the recovery you just flashed.
Sometimes the phone indeed overwrites the newly flashed custom recovery with the stock one, in such cases it usually helps to disable auto reboot in Odin (as you did), holding power+home+both volume buttons to force a reboot, then booting back to download mode and flashing the recovery one more time. Happy flashing!

[SOLVED] Can not install TWRP [#failed to open recovery] Help!

[ORIGINAL POST] - solution further down - (TLDR do not reboot into system after flashing recovery)
Hi,
I'm trying to install TWRP but when i've flashed PDA via ODIN and reboot into recovery, this is what i get. [see images] https://imgur.com/a/zfdvs
TWRP file from TWRP website: 'twrp-3.2.1-0-dream2lte.img.tar' for Samsung Galaxy S8+ (Exynos) (dream2lte)
As this did not work i tried to flash new BL and CP and then i retried to install TWRP, no luck.
Can you please help me! Thanks!
I also tried flashing TWRP (another version just to be safe) via heimdall, but that didnt work either. The enitire prosess is fine, but when i reboot into recovery i still get to the same page. [see images above]
[SOLUTION]
*Do not* boot into system after flashing recovery (TWRP), instead, make sure to boot directly into recovery.
Apparently Samsung Reinstalls recovery when you boot into system after flashing TWRP (or any other recovery for that matter). I do not know if it's like this for all Samsung devices or only the S8, but that's the way it is.

I had the same problem and found instructions to press volume down + bixby + power and then start the Odin load. The load went fine but my phone locked up at the Samsung Logo screen. I tried getting back to the download mode but the screen went black. Now the phone will not power on at all. Exceedingly frustrating.
I've spent 2 hours trying to work out what did I do wrong (checking hashes, odin version, etc) and the simple solution was to boot into recovery right away after flashing via Odin. Thanks!

I've followed different procedures but basically use ODIN to push TWRP to my SP-580. After that, the tablet reboots. I disconnect the cable and power the tablet down. I then hold VOLUME DOWN and VOLUME UP and connect the cable again. But instead of going into recovery mode, it just shows me the percent charged dial. I can get no further than that and have done that at least 15 times. HELP???? Thank you!!

Help with twrp

I've flashed twrp 3.2.2 for trlte version for my sm-n190s but when i go into recovery it goes into the normal stock recovery pls help
Try flashing like this: Untick auto-reboot, flash TWRP. Once done, force power off by pulling the battery, then put it back in and boot into download mode again. Flash TWRP one more time, and this time it's guaranteed to stick.
i had an issue with flashing it 2
u need to un cheek the auto restart from odin and restart it on your own by either taking the battery out or just keep pressing power and vol down and home .
