Buying a Nexus 4 after sticking with the Samsung Vibrant for so long. Anything I should know about the Nexus before making this upgrade?
You should be the one telling us what you want to know, hehe.
Get the 16gb variant as it doesn't have a micro SD slot and I find 8gb is not sufficient.

Sometimes the battery life SUXX
Today i got 2h 40m screen on time with some 3G and some Wi-Fi.
On wi-fi only i get 5hours max with custom kernel, under-clock to 1.2ghz and under-voltage.
Just get the Nexus 5. The N4 is almost 2 years old.
No SD card slot, its pure android; don't expect fancy ui design. Not a lot of customization like touchwiz or sense; its simple.

Wait really? This is making me very hesitant, as I already hate my battery life. Is this with a ROM or stock?

Stock rom 4.4.2, Xposed module and franco kernel r204
If you don't want to get a cover I recommend getting a screen protector for the front and back. This phone is awfully slippery.
I personally have great battery life from my Nexus 4. Stock, Xposed and Franco just like the previous poster. Had a vibrant long ago. If you're upgrading, you will be very happy. Of course, price would be the only reason to take a Nexus 4 over the 5, but you won't be disappointed with either.

Audio mods is a must for N4. And for battery life it isn't perfect, but still pretty good. I've usually get 3 days with 2.5 SoT (moderate usage).
Just sharing my thoughts between Nexus 4 and Galaxy Nexus... I'll still prefer the battery life and screen of the Nexus 4..... But the fact that my Nexus 4 had approximity sensor is really unnerving sometimes.

Hey guys, prospective owner here, want to know how people are finding the battery life after a few weeks of owning the phone now. And is there a likelihood we will see google patch it in the near future to fix some issues?
Mines pretty good and I usually get 4 hr screen time and like 17 hr on battery so yep not to bad I did about 3 charge cycles on it but yep.

Ah that's not too bad at all is that on stock rom and kernal? I would say I use aout 2-3 hours of screen on time in a day. Any experience with the Note 2? Having to chose between the two
I suggest checking the battery life thread

Why is my battery time so bad I only get about 3 hours of sot and about 16 of battery life... Is my nexus 4 defected or is it just my set up? I am using PA 3.56 with the kernel it comes with, how good is your battery life? And should I get an RMA?

Flash Franco kernel milestone 2. I get 5 hours of screen on time.

3hrs sot is not bad for this phone.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
SOT is really subject to usage. With a lot of gaming, you could see 2 hours or less. Also has a lot to do with your signal if you're not on Wifi. 3 hours isn't bad, and doesn't necessarily mean there's something wrong with your phone or ROM. I've personally never gotten much more than that.

Agreed. No need to RMA, need to get another phone
People with much longer times don't use it as a smartphone, believe me!
Also, we can see that your signal reception isn't good, and that for sure will hit the battery time hard!
Stock, rooted, Franco kernel

This is why people worry about getting 3 hours SOT. No demanding apps... Can't see network signal.

Hi everyone,
I posted a few months back whether I should buy a Nex 4 or not. Now that I did, I have another Q.
With my old Galaxy S, i HAD to root and install ROMs cuz it was reaaaally slow. Now, with the Nex 4, it's super fast that I'm not even thinking about ROMing it any time soon. However, I was wondering about rooting it. Does rooting affect the speed? it made my GS faster. Will it do the same for the Nexus?
Thanks.
Just rooting won't actually do anything but installing the right apps will. Of course if you overclock it it will get faster, but personally I underclock it to save battery. I'd say it is definitely worth rooting it. You never know you might feel like installing a ROM later so it can't hurt to root now. Basically everything rooting did to your GS it will do to your N4 but the nexus is already fast.

I'd suggest a kernel change at least. The stock kernel made my phone very hot sometimes and the battery life sucked.
Unlock bootloader, root, start modding and theming, or flash custom rom, have fun, and ignore all the idiot trolls here.

I dont agree. Stock rom and stock kernel. Awesome. Provided that if you have not set sync setting for least times.

Same situation here, from Galaxy S to Nexus 4... well, I've rooted, installed Franko Kernel... and here stops my modding, now enjoying the speed . The only problem is that now every phone I touch, feels slower compared to the nexus

To each his own.
I rooted my Gnex the first day I got it. Although I plan on staying stock for awhile on the N4 since my favorite custom rom (CM) seems to be a bit glitchly atm.
What I did for an while was run stock-rooted for a bit. I turned ALL animations in Dev Options to .5 and my phone was flying! Quick to menus, opening and closing apps, and saving RAM. Battery life was great considering I'm a stickler when it comes to WiFi and Data toggled. Than I would run either PACman or Paranoid Android. Both were fluid experiences. But nothing beat Stock Rooted speeds.
It just matters what you're looking for. Try ROMs out, there's plenty of them out there! Good luck and happy rooting!

That is outstanding. But how in the world is it possible that you have a "screen on" state without being awake?
I have been fighting battery issues for so long now, I'd really like to get to something as good as what you get...
i get 5 hours on heavy use until i hit 10 % well my setup is in my signature on light use i am sure i can stretch it to 6 hours with brightness on auto and wifi is on most of the time
battery life is never going to be better for me unless i uv. the previous setup, i used cm 10.1.2 stable with matr1x kernel. i uv and set the max cpu to 1350. it was really really good. i can use the phone from 8am to 9pm.
now currently using aosp 4.3, the default setup battery life has improved a bit compared to 4.2.2 stock, but after semaphore kernel installed and uv a bit, even with max cpu at default which is 1.5ghz, battery life has been really great.

I've terrible battery usage after 4.3 update. I never had any issues before but now I get 20 to 30 percent drop during the night when before it was under 10 in the same scenario.
Android os Showing 6h usage...
Any help on sorting this out highly appreciated.
Battery life has increased a lot for me.
No heavy usage, I know. But still awesome compared to the stats I had when I bought my nexus 4

Just out of curiosity, are in you the US/North America?
I had the same issue of losing tons of battery to the OS overnight. I reflashed to an older version of the modem. Most of the people I have seen so far with these symptoms have been in France and India. Must be something about the cell services and how they interact with the phone.
@Calebz: I'm in Ireland.
I've restarted the phone since and the battery usage is back to normal, will see for how long.
Maybe you can look at this:

So i flashed my device and is now running 4.4 with ART enabled. Performance is definitely better but I want to get some extra juice out of it (considering that im 5h 6m at most with SCREEN ON TIME)

EDIT:
(referring to the pictures attached) Yeah. I was playing Asphalt, had wifi most of the time (even if there wasn't a hotspot), watched The Way Way Back via Mx player, Juice Cubes and was reflashing the ROM after having trouble with Xposed Framework patch.
PS. Sorry this was from my CLEAN ROM WITH FAUX KERNEL so what I'll post next is my latest Kitkat setup + stats
Not so pleased with these stats, but my Nexus 4 had record breaking stats! I have never had more than an hour of SOT, but today I got three! Running KitKat and ART.
Well, for my N7 it is a different story. Take a look.
That is the worst stats I've ever had. Let's give it a day, like I did on my N4.

Your kernel is at 69%. Either you switched to ART directly before this run or you have a rogue app that's not showing up in the stats. Reboot, recharge and try again.

No games. I don't do much gaming. Can play some rayman jungle run on my next charge.
Just one hour left til 3 days standby, already 8h screen on and 10% battery left. I'll reach 9h SOT without a doubt and on 4.3 I could only get that with one day standby. So standby time is the biggest improvement.

Auto brightness, mostly streaming and downloaded video, browsing, etc. 6 hours screen time takes me down to 45%. I don't often run it past there, but if I did, I should be able to get close to 11 hours screen time.
