I was pondering possible reasons for the battery life problem that many of us are well aware of. Some peoples batterys will last a good day or two and then theres people like me who charge my phone in the morning and when i get home in the afternoon just to keep it alive and this is compared with people using the same rom. So i thought maybe there could be something to do with what the battery level is when the phone is rooted or a new rom flashed, and this process may reduce the battery cycle to a specific point. E.g. if i 1st root and load my new rom on my phone at 50%, when booted it could show 100% but its actually 50% than it should be. i have not tested this but im just putting it forward as an idea. if anyone does have the time to unroot, charge to 100% and then reroot their phone + custom rom and test the battery life could they please post their results here. No harm in trying ...
EDIT:It seems we have found a solution or alteast a way to greatly improve battery life by putting my random idea and the information from maxisma togethere.. here are the following steps:
1. When the battery is low e.g. 10% boot into recovery mode and wipe->battery data
2. Reboot and then drain the battery or let it die (turn on mobile network add the 'sync now' widget and keep syncing with the music on loud - works pretty fast)
3. Leaving the phone dead put it on charge and let it charge fully till the led indicates green (may take longer than normal)
4. UNPLUG!! the charger then boot the phone up and your battery life should be much better
TIP!! Remeber when changing and flashing new roms to unplug the phone from charge after you boot!
Hope this works for you all PM me for results (i went from 5-10% loss an hour to what is now about 1-2% max )

I've think it's more likely to do with how I charge my phone. If I charge the phone on my PC then the battery lasts me a day. On Sunday night I charged it with a mains charger, and a day and a half later I still have 40% left. That's with constant WiFi, Talk, calls and text messages.
Sometimes I'll do the same things mentioned above and the battery will be about 20% by the time I'm going to bed.
I could be very wrong, I'm no battery expert!
There shouldn't be any difference between PC charging and mains charging. The mains charger would utilise a transformer to give the same oomph as a PC gives...if not it'd fry the battery whilst charging.
Funnily enough, mains AC - DC transforms are a little choppy, although at such a low current it should be entirely negligible, but your PC's power supply should give a cleaner power output than the mains. Are you sure it isn't just a placebo, I still like to think charging my PSP via the mains rather than USB will do it quicker and last longer, since its dedicated

I've heard this theory before. I can't even begin to fathom how this could be possible. I hereby dismiss it as 'rubbish'.
Seriously though, I think it's far more likely to be related to the apps/widgets people are using after flashing the rom. The only thing that differs drastically from build to build is the different apps that people install.
Might be worth those with very crap battery lives sending me an hours worth of logcat. I can do an hours worth of logcat for myself (I never have battery issues), and compare the results.
He's partly right.
Android has a bug that when it's plugged into a charger while booting up, it'll report a higher battery status than it actually is.
This is preventing the phone from charging the battery completely.
So, a recommendation for you: Always unplug your phone from the charger before powering it up.

Since my last post ive drained my battery out. Kept the phone off and charged it fully. It did take longer than normal which could be a good thing. Ive booted it up about 15 mins ago and il post later/tomorrow about how the battery performs now.

I maybe jumping the gun a bit here but my phone says an up time of 1hour 27 mins. and normally its about an hour to about 5-10% of battery life and im sorry to say... im still on 100% WOO . I will still report how this lasts through to tomorrow, however i think theres enough evidence to suggest that the method stated earlier seems to fix what seemed to be a 'shortend battery cycle'. Anyone else with a short battery life i advise you to do the same asi have and please feedback to me with any results.. hope this has been helpful

I got escited too bratfink when I had 100% battery for ages while it was in sleep, then I dl'd a few progs from market and whoosh my battery started disappearing faster than expected. Try downloading a few things and you'll see your battry disappearing quicktime.
minfree or ramzswap off could be causing the issue.
I remember before I put that tweak on my phone (when it first came out), my battery life was amazing.
After I put the values in for init.d as from the forum page below:

the battery life started disappearing like mad! and this was on a modaco rom!
I think now that all the new 2.1 roms are including this minfree tweak it is causing this battery issue to be carried over. All attempts to reduce battery drain are not having as much effect as they could because of this.
I would like to try one of these new roms without the tweak but I do not have the knowhow to stop it. i.e. put the original init.d (or equivalent) for the the roms in place.
You might argue that the memory clearing has nothing to do with the battey drain, but what i saw was that it did on a modaco rom. I don't know whether it is the switching of ramzswap or the minfree settings ( i have a feeling it is both.
Can a chef cook one of their roms without the tweak and keep the original settings?

I'm on the BeHero v1.3.2,m will that command put my phone memory settings back to what they would normally be without the taskkiller?
If so can I just remove that file with OI file explorer as atm my laptop usb aint working (can't connect to phone properly, can only charge)
If you use Bluetooth, GPS*, or plug/unplug usb, CPU lock at 528Mhz and battery drain. This happend in all eris/roms.
I can see with Battery Graph while I sleep the battery is full, but no reason (only unlock to check time, kill alarms, read mail,...) the battery drains constantly. (no tweeter, no facebook, no GPS, no BT,..),

It's OK managed to fix the usb on my laptop.
I am currently performing the third step...i really hope this works cuz I am getting really really horrible battery life right now...I get only about 8 hours with ocassional use...like listening to music, browsing, taking pictures, sms.

I noticed that using the overclock widget (even with the lower clock option when screen is off) also eats some battery, it definitely reduced my usage time on Android 1.5.

I have the VillainRom 3.4 installed. Totally NO drain. I turned on Bluetooth and called several times. Battery drain is 8% in 12 hours .
I did not install any widgets. Pure standard custom ROM with newest radio.

exactly my view.
I'm using HeroDroid and i had really bad battery drain problem. I'm a sort of heavy user and with bluetooth & gps permantly on, my phone had drained out by lunch time. After doing some tests, i have found that my problem was related to GPS. If i boot my phone with GPS off and left it at off, i get the same battery level usage as my original cupcake 1.5 ROM. Perharps you guys can try it and post your results.

I found that to help as well. In the last 3h10m it only went down by 4%. That's definitely a lot better than what I was getting before and with the previous ROM. I am using the new Autokiller and Overclock widget if that helps any and booted up with my GPS off and followed the steps mentioned in the first post.
hmm if its the case that the phone is "capping" the maximum amount of charge the phone can have then it should take longer to charge also
my battery life i kinda okay, lasts 10-12 hours with intermediate use, using battey graph app it took me 70 mins to charge from 40% to 100%
ill let it drain out tonight and see how long it takes for a full charge
it would be good if we could compare results with people with and without battery problems
Hi guys, this is not another rant post about battery life, but i'm starting to become really
frustrating with it, i tried almost all the solutions provided here on the forum but i can't
simply get the **** out of it. This is my story:
I bought the phone as used around 1 month ago (the guy who sold me the phone used it for around 1
month as well). I was quite satisfied about the device, but i noticed almost immediately the damn
poor battery life. With stock battery, my stats are (this is an average of the last 3 times i
used it):
Average duration: 27 hours
Average display usage: 2.5 hours
Average display %: around 45%
Average standby: Cell 30%, phone 15-16, other apps and android core 1-2
This with the following configuration:
3g off
gps off
background data off
bluetooth off
display brightness set to the minimum
no background applications or live wallpapers
No animations
No vibration feedback
No sounds
No widgets
Removed 5 touchwiz panels out of 7
Wi fi on (actually i noticed some small improvements by leaving it off)
The strange thing is, i noticed that the phone drains a LOT of battery while in standby. During
the night (7-8 hrs standby) my phone can drains up to 20% of the battery life. I read on the
forum that a lot of you guys have a battery drain overnight of around 2-3% which is 10 times
lower than mine.
So i thought about 2 possible causes:
1) Software related(processes or applications running in background)
2) Hardware related (battery ****ed up by the previous owner; phone not going in standby correctly)
Regarding the problem 1) i tried almost every solution provided here on the forum. Updated to new roms (JM5 and JM8) installed ultraslim roms, installed battery saving applications and task killers, performed some exotic "fixes" (removed battery stats file, tried to completely drain the battery following some procedures explained here on the forum). Nothing helped. To check case 2) i bought a cameronsino extended battery. Well with this battery i have exactly twice the duration of the stock battery. Last night i charged it to full before going to bed. This morning, when i woke up, the phone drained 10% (!) of the battery in 8 hours. So the stock battery is not the problem. What should i think then? that My phone is ****ed up? is There no chance to obtain a decent battery life? How is possible that a lot of guys have almost twice my battery life with stock battery?
I guess your phone may not be going into the sleep mode correctly ... try using system panel (from the market) and figure out which rogue app is causing the problem. Mine usually drains 4-5% at night.. (jm8 stock + voodoo)...
Samsung GT-T5800. Android OS 2.1-update 1, I5800XXJH1, Kernel 2.6.29 root SE-S603 #2.
The problem:
1. Battery till 50% discharges normally - about 10-15% per day, but after 50% it immediately shows 15% and asks to connect charger and phone switches off very fast. actually no chance to mane even emergency call. No 40%, no 30%, no 20% in battery level.
2. When connect phone to charger - battery charging level immediately set to 80% or every ~10 seconds: 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%. After that phone charges about 1,5-2 hours till 100% and after about 1-2hours it asks to disconnect from the charger. Battery temperature during charging and after it: 31-33C.
After 3d 8h 40min. (~80hours using applications: Battery booster and Memory Booster, no 3G) of battery usage phone switches off.
Battery usage was:
Android system: 61%
Cell Standby: 19%
Phone Idle: 12%
Bluetooth: 4%
Voice calls: 4%
Time from 15% to 5% - 15 minutes with no using the phone. Battery's temperature 20C, Voltage: 3588mV Phone switches off. I have tried 2-3 times to switch on the phone to make battery more empty and finally switched it on and at the same time connected it to charger.
Here is the interesting charging time line after phone died and was switched on to charge it (sorry - no in seconds):

After this charge GT-I5800 (with no any software changes) stoped to show 50% to 15%, but 30% disappears fast to 15% (it means one short call).
Possible that battery issue reason is that (I think) phone was charged partly switched off and partly switched on.
Maybe there are some battery level controlling OS software bugs, I do not know.
Is it official bug or issue?
Or some guru can comment that battery level issue? I saw I was not first user having it.

I have observed that when i make/recieve a call the battery voltage decreases greatly because of which the battery also decreases and after sometime the battery voltage comes back to normal but NOT the battery.
My battery also drops down from 50% to 15% or 5%.....It's really very annoying...
I think that this is a frimware issue but i am not sure..I am scared that it could be a hardware issue...
Well i have mailed Samsung also regarding this issue so that they fix this issue in the next frimware upgrade and hope others also do the same so that we have a better chance of this bug getting fixed.....!!!

And when I switch off / on the phone then it shows probably correct vallue. For an example. It shows me 15% and after restart it is 60 %. What a stupid bug - I've never have this problem with any device before. Even phones 10 years ago were able to show correct battery status. I think this problem was also with original 2.1 android firmware.
Can someone who has upgraded to froyo pl. confirm that this issue is resolved in the new firmware?

yes, in JP9 / froyo is still this battery problem. When I switch on / off the phone then it's ok. Does someone resolved this issue please ?
My issue still exists. Froyo did not help. Also I can't understand why does one time on charging battery becomes hot, another time -cold.
same for me, and today i charged my phone and after charging just put it on my table after 1h i saw that there are only 80%. Didn't see this on other firmwares
Same here. I thought it is because of my battery manager widget which I had installed, but un-installing/master clear also did not help. Looks like it is major problem. Moreover, few of the battery widgets mention that in some devices they report 1% level battery change, but in Samsung I5801, it will be 10%.

Now I stay on 100% for 5hrs or so. lasting 2 days with 45mins call time and some Wifi use. Like today charged full 100% at 9AM and now its 2230 and I have 80%.I have switched off a lot of things. Above needs to be done once only. If it doesn't work then go to service center. Remember battery has 6 months warranty only so be quick and try above on new battery.
I also run LauncherPro instead of stock. Disabled data and enable when out of AP range (only use Wifi when needed and have an AP). Background data/synch is always off unless I use market. All apps are set to never except Gmail. Use K9 Email too and ATK. Am on DDj6 FM. Have removed a lot of apps, foursquare included and run 2 screen with LauncherPro widgets only.

As long as I know li ion batteries doesnt have the memory effect but they still have to be recalibrated from time to time, lets say once a month. That means dont charge the phone until it goes off and then charge to the top.
I wasnt willing to wait for 11 hours for phone to charge when I bought it and after few days I ve notice that battery last very short. After that I ve performed the full cycle (drain to the bottom - when phone turn itself off, then after few minutes turn it on, wait until it goes off - repeat few times until its completely off then charge it fully - I usually turn off the phone while charging ).
As long as I know all modern devices like phones, notebooks etc shut down before the battery is completely drained because they want to have safe margin of the battery power because of, as long as I know, when li ion batteries become completely drained then could be damaged completely so you cant recharge them again. Anyway with that "turn on then its drained" I believe that I use the battery more than normal and that phone will recalibrate to the new situation figuring that battery have more voltage than phone "expected".
Anyway with few recharging cycles like those I ve described above I can use the phone now for a 2 days with moderate usage...
That 50-15 problem still exist but 100% period last quite long and also phone can be used a long time from the moment battery reach 15% ...
Try doing it the other way round!
Keep your device on constant charge or at least as much as possible for 10 days from new and you should have now problem.
I have run tests on Lion powered devices for the past 5 years and I have never had to "calibrate" once.
My battery usage is always consistent and seemingly accurate.
And this method encourages max power from the battery.

i just flashed my I5801 with Froyo (XXJPB and then XXJPA), but having very low battery back up, can anyone advice something which can help boosting the performance of the battery? Please help.
Seems most of us have not noticed:
GB stops the charger supply on our SGS as soon as the battery is fully charged and then your phone uses BATTERY instead of charger to keep itself on!
If your phone has some apps running which drains the battery fast, your phone will drain the entire battery and will shut down when the battery is dead!
This is very dangerous for the battery to discharge every day because of this bug and Samsung and most of still haven't seems to notice this!
I have tested this several times now and downgrading the Froyo fixes the issue.
This issue occurs even when the phone is sitting idle with minimal battery drain for several hours connected with charger (in such situation the drain is minimal with few percentage like when you disconnect the charger.
Let me know if some of you have different experience as my phone definitely has this issue which doesn't exist if I downgrade to Froyo.
We all can check this behavior:
Charge the phone till it says 100% charged. Use the phone normally or heavily for several minutes (like web browsing). Keep it connected to charger while it says "Charged" 100% for a couple of hours (to ensure that you did not drain the battery beyond charger capacity). You would still get much lesser than 100% charge after removing the charger (try using battery indicator tools which tells exact %age of battery).
This bug exist on all the Gingerbread images I have tried including official and those based on JVP 2.3.4
Read below how lithium ion batteries work best if used around full charge (without over charging - Phone and Battery has protection circuit) during regular use:

Deeper than 10% charging and discharging cycles unnecessarily will significantly reduce the lifetime of the battery. Hence when phone is plugged, it should charge battery to 100% and power the phone through charger after stopping charging. Samsung usually stop charging around 96% of full capacity of battery to avoid over charging. After disconnecting the batteries once around 96% was achieved, it will restart the charging cycle around 95%. Hence all builds till Froyo reported close to 100% charge level and never less than 95% when disconnected from the charger.
GIST - Batteries should maintain floating charge voltage to avoid depletion and wear unnecessarily while connected to the charger after full charge and phone should run on Charger ONLY. Instead, Samsung goofed up Gingerbread drivers to switch off the charger and run the phone on batteries randomly draining the battery sometimes completely. GB OS thinks phone is running on charger and hence show 100% charge and RAPIDLY drains the battery till it goes dead when batteries go dead (randomly)!

Screenshot #5 and #6 tells the DROP in battery voltage as soon as the charger is connected (200mV!) which speaks how much the GB OS consumes more when plugged in and STILL discharging!
Got the same problem with jpu. i didnt really realize this problem until this morning, just wondered why i had only about 90% battery in the morning after charging while with froyo i had about >95 in the morning.
today i slept until 10:00 and wow, battery was at 70(!) %.
when i plugged it in yesterday, ive got about 80% left (well, charging the phone every night seems to be a rite for me).
(and yes, im always listening to the sound when plugging the charger in).
so, as far as i can say, phone does not just stop charging at 100%, it also seems to consume much more power than it should. dangerous for battery, when the phone keeps plugged in for t >> t(100%).
This is a known issue of all current gingerbread builds. It will probably be fixed in due time.

A temporary workaround - turn the phone off. Plug the charger in, then power on. Doing it this way should keep the battery topped-up after it first hits 100% charge - at least it does for me(I think reliably, but I can't remember). But it's a nuisance - especially as I tether for my home internet these days. Machines updating the OS overnight have seen me unplug to have less than 60% charge despite it saying 100% before unplugging, which doesn't last the day.
Unimpressed with Gingerbread on the whole. And Samsung/Kies for not letting me downgrade if the latest update(s) aren't up to much.
Actually I'm running eclair today to compare the battery. Got sick of unplugging it in the morning only to have less than 70% charge.

I don't appear to have this problem, I put my phone on charge last night at 23:30 as usual, the alarm went off at 07:30, then played a couple of tunes, phone showed 100%. Disconnected charger, went downstairs, checked xda for any news, saw this thread, checked my phone's battery level and it showed 98% after being disconnected from charger for 27 mins. Unless I'm using nav or maps my normal battery drain is 4% per hour in a reasonable signal strength area, so 98% after 30mins is normal for me.
For ref: Galaxy i9000, XEU UK unbranded on XXJVO via keis. no mods.
Thanks for posting this I used my phone's gps yesterday when driving and I only just stumbled across this when I got where I was going, phone still said battery at 100% whilst plugged in but as soon as I turned the engine off and killed the charger my phone died with a dead battery.
Somewhat annoying to say the least, I'm going back to a 2.2.1 Rom tonight I've had loads of problems with all the 2.3 Rom's I've tried mainly lag and battery drain. I never seem to have any free RAM on gingerbread, lucky to get 50Mb on boot
oh well rant over the world can now continue ;-)

Well, woke up this morning and unplugged phone. 1.5 hours later and it's on 95% still, with a little usage. Didn't see that on 2.3.4. Using jg4 fully stock, only rooted. I might stick jsd on it today and see how it goes tomorrow. Not many apps back on it though. Surprisingly the phone feels quite fast at the moment. Don't remember eclair being like this. Not seeing much difference between 2.3.4 and it currently.
As I use go launcher, having gingerbread is probably less important for me cause I kind of don't use many of the features of it (the launchers etc) anyway.

Disconnected charger, went downstairs, checked xda for any news, saw this thread, checked my phone's battery level and it showed 98% after being disconnected from charger for 27 mins. Unless I'm using nav or maps my normal battery drain is 4% per hour in a reasonable signal strength area, so 98% after 30mins is normal for me.

I would appreciate if you could test the issue by using the phone heavily after full charge by KEEPING THE CHARGER CONNECTED AFTER FULL CHARGE (preferably playing 3D games or running benchmarks) and disconnect the charger to check the battery level.
Seems most of us are unaware of this issue and some confuse this with the excess battery drain issue after DISCONNECTING the charger.
Thank goodness I found this thread. I had thought there was something wrong with my battery. After unplugging my battery would instantly drop from 100% to 96%, once even 87%. Thinking it was something to do with battery re calibration due to me flashing new roms, i wiped batt stats many times and went through of arduous process of draining and fully charging, but to no avail. Now I will rest easy despite still facing this bug. At least I know I'm not the only one.
yep...i just flashed a couple of days ago from stock 2.2 (KC1) via kies to 2.3.4 (JVP) using ODIN. I have had it charge fully and upon removal of the usb cable, it dropped from 100% to 98%. Since then, I have gone through one full discharge and the subsequent recharge to 100% dropped to 96% upon charger removal. I recall reading about this somewhere suggesting a recalibration was needed, but I was just trying to get it up to 100% and didn't have the time to search forums (i was using a portable usb charger). I disconnected the charger and after reconnection and display of 100%, it would then drop to 97% instead of 96%. A repeat proved fruitless and so I tried to charge it while off. Turning it on after a bit I found that it was brought up to 98%. Repeated process for 99% and FINALLY 100%. Though the final 100% was achieved after a few 100% while off and while on charges. It stayed at 100% for a bit over 30 mins. I will see how subsequent charges behave...

This is a serious bug as it will significantly reduce the battery life due to repeated deeper charge and discharge cycle.
unless i've misunderstood, it seems to me that what will really affect battery life is the battery stats calibration. where it once would charge to 100%, it will now charge to, for example, 96%. Doing a calibration will make that 96% appear to the phone as 100%. From reading, it seems calibration is required for firmware flashes, so the more flashes and calibrations you do, the less battery life you will have since subsequent calibrations are done when the battery reading is less than 100 immediately after an unplug. Following the example above, the next flash could also have the same issue of displaying 100% and then 96% immediately after an unplug. The user would try to calibrate their battery yet again. Now this time, the 96% is of the previous full reading (which was actually 96% but appears as 100% b/c of calibration). So, the after a second calibration, the 100% reading is actually closer to 92.16% of the original pre-flash and pre-calibrated battery (96% of 96% of 100%).
hope that makes sense and someone can confirm, or instead (which i hope), prove me wrong as I would hate to think that what I stated is true since that will GREATLY diminish battery life artificially.

Yeah, but in pre-gingerbread roms the charging started again when below certain value, so it stayed above 90% all the time.
Now you can drain the battery heavily by using it while plugged (and the battery always shows 100%), then unplug and have it jump down to like 60%, or worse, turn off.
The only way to restart the charging is removing and connecting the charger again.

You are confusing recalibration and battery drain after full charge
The issue is after full charge, phone disconnects the charger and start draining batteries till it goes dead.
Let me rephrase the issue - batteries start draining immediately after full charge as the phone somehow start using battery INSTEAD of charger ONLY after full charge!
This is a serious bug as the GB drivers switch off the charger (instead of batteries) after full charge when the OPPOSITE has to happen!

I'm new here so.. hello everyone Tnx for having me. I've read the other Note 3 battery drain issues but they are not the same as mine. Here's the thing: Note 3 drains about 1-2% per minute of battery if I do anything on it like browse the net or godforbid play ingress (then it's even worse at about 3-4% per minute). Here's the kicker: it only happens on the original battery. When I use noname cheap battery replacement it uses about 0.15-0.25% a minute (or 4-7 minutes per 1%). I've swapped the original battery at the store so this is the second one and the same problem persists. I used my own multimeter to confirm the battery voltage and it's the same one as detected by note 3. The problem persists on aryamod, C9 and phorensis note7 roms. Other things I've noted is that if i reboot the phone at 100% (immediately after unplugging) it will come back at 91-92%. If the battery is drained to 0% on purpose it will stay at 1% for about 45 minutes or so, and then if it's taken out of the phone while turned off and put back immediately on boot it will show at 20%-40% charge. Basically, what are the odds that 2 batteries at the store are both faulty? Any advice? Any suggestions?

The problem persists even if nothing is running, fresh boot with zero apps on, just opera mini and 4G xor wifi.
Test with full wipe and stock rom.

I can do that, but I'm also interested as to why it happens on original brand name Samsung battery and not on noname knockoff? Also, 8-10% charge drop and 20-40% charge rise is highly abnormal.
It could have something to do with the custom ROMs or kernels included with the ROMs.
I also suggest a full wipe of the cache, system, and data before going back an unrooted stock ROM.
Hey OP, both original batteries i had (the one i bought the phone with and the one i bought last year from Samsung) act kinda the same as you describe.
Basically it drains 1% every two minutes or so if i keep using the phone. If i let the phone idle for 20 minutes and then start using the phone again at, say 80%, it will stay on 80% for 10 minutes and then start dropping fast again. After reaching 1% it will also give me some 20 - 30 minutes of screen time.
I noticed that if i unplug the phone the moment it say 100% - unplug, the battery will drop fast to 95% (15 minutes of idle). However, if i leave the phone plugged in for an additional hor after full charge, it will discharge normally in idle, 1% every hour. I calibrated the battery numerous times by fully discharging it and charging it with the phone off but no chabge in its behaviour.
My sister's no name battery, of course, act normally under identical load, 1% every 5 minutes of screen, no problems at full charge, or 1%.
