[Q] Problems with update / Operating system has been modified - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, didn't find such a question on the first five pages so I gave it a try.
So, when I try to update my device, strange error is coming "The operating system on your device has been modified in an unauthorized way", but I didn't even root it! WTH? How can I solve it?

If you are using ART switch back to Dalvik and reboot.
Also it is possible it's the memory card doing (sounds silly but the Note 3 does it also) remove your Ext SD and reboot and check again.

I thought it was ART as well. Strange thing from Samsung. If it's originally supported why it cause problems?

ART Is still technically experimental, I guess it just modifies the apps etc and the OTA on the device doesn't take to kindly to be adjusted. - But yeah Samsung should inform people really that ART will block OTA and cause issues.

No success
Hi,
Tried the options put forward to no avail, still unable to update to lollypop, could it be something to do with vendor making modifications to sell to other regions.

3.2 OTA "the update is invalid and has been canceled"

I keep getting a notification that a system update is available but after it downloads and tries to install, I get the error "the update is invalid and has been canceled"
Did this six times with the same result. What's going on?

Assuming you are not rooted or modded, the only thing I did (and always do) is remove my transflash card before I do an update. If you DO mod or have root, maybe it's something else.
So my recommendation for now is to remove your msd card, that is if you even have one plugged in and then download and apply the update. If you don't have one in there, no suggestions here right now. I am stock, have never rooted or modded my system and my OTA was perfection. It downloaded and updated without a hitch.
GL, let me know how it goes.
not rooted but I did have an SD card inserted. Removed it and the OTA was successful! Thanks!!

Good to hear! Now you know.
Enjoy your Iconia.
Realllllly interested to know why the sd card is causing the update to fail, that's strange.
if you download the patch fix from Acer support site, it also fix the "the update is invalid and has been canceled" error. That is how I solved the problem. It is good to know that the SD card is the main cause as I also inserted my SD card.
What about Acer informing about those "how to do" basic things.

We have 3 Acer 500's ( NOT Rooted) in our family, two of them got the updates without any problems.......one even had an external sd card in it.
However, the third unit has NO sd-card and is NOT able to complete the update.
I hate to perform a factory (hard) re-set on it, as this unit has many apps installed.
Any new suggestions would be grately appreciated.

Not your post, it was what I wrote.... Just didn't drank my morning coffee and I wrote something not relevant to help you. Sorry for the confusion
Perhaps the 3.2 OTA update is getting corrupted during the download. It seems to be a zip file of some 357 MB.
Does anyone know in which folder the zip file is stored, and the name of the file?
I'm thinking I could try to delete the file and download it again. Then try to install it
My goal is to avoid a Factory (hard) reset.
For those posting that they're not rooted, it may be helpful to also note if it ever was rooted previously. I unrooted, or thought I did, and was getting hung at the Bee logo with an "!". I had to re-root, unintall anything related to root, including reflashing the stock rom, reversing everything that USB Mount All had done, re-enable the phone checking services and uninstall the battery saving app afterwards, THEN I was able to successfully update. Turns out I really didn't have a need for root access.
I had the same error message and tried twice before it finally went through the third time. I was rooted, but with the stock ROM. I also had an SD card in and removed it for my second try. I did not remove root for any of my attempts. On my third try, I left the SD card in and it updated. Wish we could get some consistency so we could try and determine the cause(s).

2 stupid and 1 not so stupid question(s), but I have to get it out of the way.
Do you have it plugged in? The tablet may not update if the battery is too low.
The other silly question - how much space is it reporting as free? I don't know if this issue still persists for some, but I remember reading a while back where people's tablets were mysteriously 'filled up'. Since you have lots of apps anyway, could you check to make sure you have enough space free?
Finally, are you setting the tablet and wifi to never turn off? I always make sure my wifi is set to always on (which it usually is set to anyway) and also that my screen timer is set to 30m or Never so it doesn't turn off. Just in case it matters. 30m for small updates, Never for large ones.
The file is supposed to download again if it doesn't work - does it not? I have no idea where it goes. A dev may be able to help you there. If you need it to re-download, I think you can just perform a manual check and it should ask you if you want to get it. (I think).
Since some people have reported that the update works WITH the sd card in there - perhaps you can try some reverse psych. and pop in a msd, see if that works.
Let me know how it goes or if you got it to work.
Interesting questions and comments. The answer to all 3 is Yes, Yes, Yes.
Thanks.
This is why I love coming to THIS forum. So many more ideas that help identify and solve the issue. Most of the other forums I looked at said "factory reset, hard reset, factory reset, hard reset..." I come here, and I see "unseat the MSD card, set wifi to always on, set screen blackout to 30 mins, etc." And VOILA! Success!
Mine is a US-based unrooted A500, 16 gig MicroSD card, and lots of apps. I was dreading the thought of doing a hard reset, as I didn't want to lose all the apps (and the info stored therein), and have to spend the better part of a day restoring everything (had to do it before; this is my second A500, as the first was stolen at the Ostiense train station in Rome). So here are the ideas I took from the above posts to get the update to work:
1 - In "Settings" set Wi-Fi Turn Off to "Never" or "Never if plugged in."
2 - Also in "Settings" set Screen Turn Off to "30 minutes."
3 - Power off your tablet, and remove the Micro SD card (if you have one installed).
4 - Power on your tablet, go back into "Settings," and go into the About Tablet section on the bottom left.
5 - Tap "System Update." If the update was downloaded previously, it's likely you'll go straight to the Ready to Install pop-up. If this is the case, run the update, and let it fail.
6 - Once the update fails, go back into the About Tablet section as above and tap "System Update" again. This time, you should get the Download Update pop-up.
7 - Let everything download, and then run the installer when it pops up.
8 - Cross your fingers and toes, and pray to whatever deity you worship that the install is successful. It worked for me at this stage.
Might be something with the wifi or screen blackout settings that causes the download to corrupt. Might be something with the MicroSD card. Whatever it is, give this process a try, and try 2 or 3 times if the first one doesn't go through (as the system may still be trying to use the old corrupted download).
Best of luck to those who still have this issue!
Edited to add: BTW, once everything is working again, don't forget to back into "Settings" and set Screen Turn Off and Wi-Fi Turn Off back to where they were before to save battery life. Forgot to mention that. Oops!

Tried downloading the 3.2 upgrade again, and made it a point to have the Acer full charged, connected to the charger, and in close proximity to the wireless router. The download was successful, and the file unzipped ok and the installation proceeded smoothly as expected.
Many thanks to all those who made suggestions.

New Kitkat build (176.44.1) Fixes in otg support and radio.

A spanish htcmania user with a german Moto G has received a new OTA (176.44.1.falcon-umts.retail.en.de), apparently it fixes otg, and pendrives can be used as they were in 4.3, with regular file managers.
Thanks to basurado for his image.
Changelog:
Fixed temporary cellular network loss
Fixed an issue which could lead to temporary loss of cellular network service for a small number of Moto G customers.
Fixed wallpaper cropping issue
Fixed an issue which could cause the home screen wallpaper on some devices to be cropped after rebooting the phone.
Resolved USB OTG support issue
Resolved a USB On The Go support issue that prevented Moto G from writing data to a connected USB storage device.
Fixed voice call volume issue
Fixed an issue where the volume of voice calls heard through the device earpiece could gradually become too low.

No, it´s too late. But he could re-flash

and when OTA notification comes again he could refuse to install it and then look into /cache for the zip.
The exact procedure?

Can you please check if unmounting works good? There's an option under Settings/Storage but using it always results in a persistent notification saying something like 'USB storage removed. Please insert new media'. Unplugging the USB drive without unmounting results in an error too!

Hmm...Well my XT1033(maybe they have different patches for different devices) with ES File Explorer shows an error.
I would check with Total File Commander and see if it exists. Meanwhile can you say how your USB drive is formatted ? I mean the file system ?

So the problem does exist in all variants. I was reading through Moto X forums earlier and it has the same bug too
Here´s another new thing, new values were added. Personally I´m glad that
there´s now 0,25x option because it solves the problem with dialer and 0,5x was too much for me.
Edit: sorry, missed Gravitybox silent tweak.
Just bumping this up.
Edit: @cesc1972
Just thought you might want to edit the title of your post to something more specific - add date or system version, because I feel it didn´t get as much attention as it deserves.
Also, besides the OTG fix there´s seems to be an improvement in radio, which was brought to attention by @lost101 in his thread:

How to install that update via the Option Systemupdate without root and cwm? Whats the Name of the File and the right folder to move the file to force the update?
ps: I copied the zip into the root folder of sdcard, made a reboot and searched for New update. Unfortunately nothing was found. From 4.3 to 4.4.2 that procedure worked fine.

If you connect NTFS pendrive it will ask for format.

I mean if you don´t use any transition effects (I always diasable them, no reason to deliberately slow down the UI), the dialer or phone app behaves like this: when you start it (and it wasn´t already running in the background), what you see by default are the contacts. If you tap dialpad icon on the bottom, dialpad won´t start just the icon disappears and you have to tap two more times to show the dialpad. You can remove this behaviour when you set transition effects to something more than 0x. On previous builds, minimal value was 0,5x which was far too much for me. Now with this new patch there is 0,25x option as well which is acceptable. But the dialpad bug is still there when you turn transitions off.

[4.4.4] Sony RIC KILLER

I have modified zxz0O0's script for rooting to just kill the SONY RIC, not upload towelroot and stuff.
This is so you can mount /system, modify platform.xml to have full access to microSD, install xposed, etc.
It works OK (as far as I can tell, I am not an expert).
CHANGELOG:
Version 2:
Removed even more unnecessary files
Here is the file [UPDATED]:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4aBOrwRL1VMeVUwcFNtNEZnRHc/view?usp=sharing
Many thanks to zxz0O0 for guidance.
Mirror if you want.
Enjoy.
Pc o recovery?
PC. Windows only.
Anyone who can confirm it working? And with no extra features.. Malware etc?
Sorry for my ignorance....but can anyone explain what RIC is and why do we want to kill it ???

Here it goes.
As far as I know, Sony RIC is a kernel module that manages security, but somebody may correct me on that.
The "/system" partition i.e. folder on a Sony Xperia phone cannot be written to, if you don't disable it.
Without writing to the /system, you cannot:
Modify the .xml that enables apps to write to the microSD card, which is disabled by default in kitkat (look at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix).
Install the xposed framework
Modify files in the /system partition for any other purposes.
The usage is as follows:
Get a ftf file for your Z2
Modify it using PRFCreator by using this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z2/general/4-4-4-creating-rooted-update-package-t2933155
Flash the phone using the recovery with the generated .zip file.
Make sure USB debugging is enabled on your phone, together with Allow mock locations (in Developer options), and that you have adb etc. istalled
Plug the phone, say yes to USB debugging query.
Run the script to kill RIC.
Enjoy.

You Sir are a gentleman and a scholar.
newb-asking-stuff-now^^
Hi there,
Im planing to do this "make ur own pre-rooted update" thing for my Z2 to get this annoying "there is an update available" message away, and maybe it also offers some nice features^^
the thing is this Z2 is my first smartphone in general (tried them in the first gen and hated those commercial-bombers xD so it took me a long while to give it a new try)
so Im not very much into rooting and so on.... I dont even know exactly how I managed to root my actual phone xD but yeah anyhow I did it with a tutorial from xda.....
what i want to ask is.... is this ric-killing really needed? as I said I dunno how exactly I did root for my 4.4.2 but I never had issues with using my SD-card or such..... never heard bout RIC before this thread here aswell.....
what is this for and does everyone need this?
....atleast how does it come that this seems to be needed with the 4.4.4 but wasnt needed on 4.4.2? or why did I never hear bout it?
(my root went something like this: using any batch-file, flashing triple-recovery twpr, cwm, and something I dont remember^^ after that rebooting several times and again flashing something from recovery.... but never there was something stated like RIC.... only TA-Backup had to be made tough Locked bootloader as this scares the **** out of me xD)
Will this work on any Sony device or just Z2?

Not really needed, no. But if you want your navigation software (Sygic, Here maps etc) or custom cameras (from the playstore) to save files to the microSD, it becomes necessary. Thank Google for instituting the silly policy with KitKat. I think they reverted it in Lollipop.

Hey bro, It works perfectly fine. I tested it on Z1C and it worked perfectly. :highfive:
just for complete understatement...
So I am actually in lack of some kind of permission as I never did this with my actual ROM? Would this allow me to move apps and just everything I desire and manage to turn on rwrwrw on the external SD?
(or is this not even part of ROM? Im not even clear bout whats included in kernel or ROM, and no idea what exactly is contained in firmware then xD anyhow I know ofcourse what those are but just can never find a explanation what differs those wich I could remember^^ Isnt it in principal all of them are part of the ReadOnlyMemory?)
Tough Im able to use foldermount and link2sd?
is this here then only usefull for "regular.no.root.required.apps" wich dont take advantage of su, or how does it come, that I read bout this kitkat.sd.killing.move but still never found the phrase RIC on my huge googling.expiditions....
(luckily knew this before purchase of a 128gb card and could go for the smaller 32gb wich is more than enough for pictures music and vids xD)
Works perfectly. I was upgraded to 4.4.4 via OTA and I was able to save the root but I wasn't able to mount system r/w. Now everything works perfectly.

But in future with Lollipop update, I think Sony will let us move apps to SD, in AOSP(CM) builds they have the option to move the apps to SD.
So I discoverd now whats this for, I found out if an app wich doesnt make use of SU wants to write on SD it fails.... I didnt get it cuz I just let make apps use of SD wich anywaye do use SU ....
Only thing Im still wondering about is why can the stock foto.app (sony) write to SD1 and other apps can not? As I know sony.foto never asked for root.permissions^^
Trouble with Google
I have used your software and my phone is full rooted. Unfortunately, OK Google won't work anymore and when I speak, it did't search. What should I do now? Sorry for my bad English.
so, can you explain step by step how to use this?

I have modified zxz0O0's script for rooting to just kill the SONY RIC, not upload towelroot and stuff.
This is so you can mount /system, modify platform.xml to have full access to microSD, install xposed, etc.
It works OK (as far as I can tell, I am not an expert).
CHANGELOG:
Version 2:
Removed even more unnecessary files
Many thanks to zxz0O0 for guidance.
Mirror if you want.
Enjoy.

Phone blocked on unlock phase.

Hi,
This last days I have stranges things with my phone, and it is the first time that happened.
When I reboot after install magisk modules or adaway file host, my phone cannot be unlocked.
I type the pin code for unlock my sim card, and after the pin code for unlock the phone.
At this moment I have a black screen and I must retype my code ever and ever.
Nothing to do, just reinstall all the rom. Unable to use a clean backup, this is the same problem.
If anybody knows this issue and can save my life, you're welcome.
Thanks a lot, cordialement
I found the issue.
I can install magisk and reboot normally.
But when I install modules everything is locked.
If anyone have infos?

Hello, I am updating my mom's phone and saw your post.
Unfortunately that bug has been around for a few months, I have a quick temporary fix for you but unfortunately the bug will return, if you can live without a screen lock that may be you only solution for now.
Lock Screen ( delete the lock)
Boot to Recovery
Go to Recovery File Manager
Navigate to the /data/system folder
locate and delete the file called : locksettings.db
Now you no longer have a screen lock and you can easily get into the phone.
FYI : If you want the lock again , simply create a new key or pattern
This issue could be anything such as corrupted permissions, It seems that it pops up after installing audio mods and substratum. But I don't think it is caused by either one.
If your phone gets hot while experiencing this issue flash the thermalfix 7 file, located on the thermals thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=78717015&postcount=18
This morning I've formated my phone to be sure is not an error from me. I will try your solution if it happens again.
Thanks for your response my friend!
Is it possible f2fs formating data partition is the issue?

It's very likely that this is the origin of the problem. It happens to me too, and have F2FS formated data too.

I'm go back to ext4 and everything is OK.
I saw a magisk module who's made for stop this issue.
If there is a magisk module for that I think the problem is f2fs!

I don't think so because I only use Ext4
Well, I think I finally found the true origin of this problem: Magisk Hide interferes with newer Webview implementations, as explained here:
https://www.didgeridoohan.com/magisk/MagiskIssues#
I also found several workarounds:
1) Disable Magisk Hide. I need some banking apps, so for me this is not an option.
2) Use Chrome Beta and select its engine as default Webview in Developer Options. Chrome Beta signature is not buggy, so it works as it should. This is the solution that I've chosen, by the way.
3) Ask our developers @codeworks @mosimchah and the others if they could include this commit that fixes invalid signatures in their future releases:
https://github.com/LineageOS/android_vendor_cm/commit/a3a76f5d1cc233ad8024ffdc74bb3a786e1605c3
Hi all:
Have you managed to solve the screen lock problem? I did not achieve it and I followed all the instructions you mentioned.
A greeting.

It's some app compatibility issue with Android Pie/Webview for sure. In my case was my banking app, changing to Chrome beta fixed the problem (app still crashes from time to time, but I'm not having the damned screen lock problem anymore)
You can try using Webview component alone from Play Store (I notice that in my case it's working too) or do some research to find out which app is causing the issue and uninstall it (if you can live without it, of course)

Unable to use OTG on android 4.4.2 head unit after firmware upgrade

I wanted to use a carplay device with my car . for this purpose I installed a firmware upgrade in order to unable to installation of applications.
After the upgrade, access to files on USB was lost .
Upgrade was taken from here :
That means that before an upgrade, I was able to listen to the music from USB stick via builtin media player. After the upgrade, media player does not see the USB.
For the same reason, carplay app doesnot see the device attached to USB port.
The strange thing is that I can see the files via file explorer ( from the head unit) , they are available at /storage/udisk.
so from one side the unit can see the USB and files, but from other side applications cant see it .
What can be the problem and possible solution ?
The details about versions :
car type : Mitsubishi Outlander 2016
MGCOL_MITSU1
Android version
4.4.2
Baseband version
MPSS.TR.1,0-01780-M8626AAAAANAZM

Permissions... file managers generally have global permissions.
Check through settings under storage and individual apps. That's my guess.

yes , I was thinking about it too.
The problem that when I want to change permissions via this file explorer , I got the error message that I am not root . but I do .
How can I be sure that I do root , or alternatively how to change permissions ?

Many times if a app is well coded and needs special permissions it will ask for them during installation. Sometimes they can be set after the fact. Try looking in accessibility.
I haven't played with Kitkat in years but generally it's pretty straight forward. I don't root so know very little on that side. ABD editing might be another option but my knowledge of that is very limited.
Try doing a bunch of Google searches for similar problems with Kitkat storage. The device doesn't have to be the same. You can find solutions many time by cross referencing other devices even platforms.
Many issues are long standing
After the initial search for each parameter, add XDA at the end to find posts here about it easily.
Doing searches for solutions is how I first learned of XDA many years ago

Ummm, I take OTG support for granted... but does your OS/device support it?
Maybe this is the issue?
Incompatible format on the card?
Try formatting card in the device then load data preferably with that device.
Swapping cards between devices can cause issues if each device is writing to it. Haven't seen it happen on Androids but Canon cams, hell yeah.

I tried several cards , small and big , formatted in a different ways.
And my device worked in the past , it is something that happened after the upgrade

It's rooted?
If it was a OTA upgrade I normally say factory reset time. In your case, not sure that's the right thing to do.
It's not the cards, it's settings or firmware I think it's safe to say.
Try clearing the system cache and a hard reboot.
Try in safe mode to rule out a rogue 3rd party app. Try clearing the data in the associated system apks.
Sometimes poorly coded 3rd party apps can toggle hidden user settings that remain even after uninstall. It's rare but quit the horror when it happens. Scruntinize the apps you installed.
One other irritating thing I've seen happen is clearing the data of a system appd in settings doesn't always remove presumably null marks. When I cleared the data with my package disabler, it fixed the problem.
Saved me a factory reset.
Fun isn't it? Been running down some glitches on my N10+'s, eventually you'll sort it out.
Keep at it over the course of a few days, weeks...
Only persistent is omnipotent
