My Epic for DEV - Epic 4G General

In January I started having problems with sound on my epic. The only way I could make calls is through wired headphones and mic. Bluetooth is screwed. I bought a new LG optimus f7 and I am very happy. The Epic is flashed over through Boost Mobil through an incognito phone and has served me since it first came out. I bought it on a special through Radio Shack for 50 bucks and it turned out to be one of my best purchases. I want to thank you Devs for all the work you have done over the years and if any of you need it its yours. It includes the incognito for boost mobile and screen protector and cheap plastic hard case. Good Luck to you guys I enjoyed the interaction immensely. Unfortunately xda does not support my phone but phandroid does. Hope to see you guys around. I will check this and PMs every few days for replies. Please for DEVs only.

New member saying hey! Now what do i do? lol

Hey guys, been lurking for a while looking at what i should pick up next, im coming from using a 16gb 2G iphone from release date.
I picked up my tab last night as a phone replacement, so far so good, (i text more than i call, so using handsfree isnt really an issue for me)
My question is, now what? How do i make it awsome haha
Thanks
edit: How can i remove the sucky service provider video when the phone boots up?
(Telstra Australia)
Sort of in the same boat myself. Got me a Tmo Tab for a good price and so far like the form factor better than my iPad which I hardly used outside of the house (which is going on eBay soon).
Not interested in using a 7 inch device for calls, already have a cell phone for that so I'm not doing the Euro rom flash. Just wished Tmo had a cheaper data plan with at least 1 or 2 gb/month for less than $30/month.
So far using it for movies/web/organization/PIM and general stuff for now and it's mighty portable for use on the train.

My poor transformer

So on Monday night I'm finishing up work at the office when my wife calls, all freaked out. Turns out someone broke into our house and made off with everything they could carry including her 2,000.00 camera and my transformer!
Needless to say, I am not happy, neither is she... and I was just getting ready to hack lookout onto the thing this weekend.
We are dealing with the insurance agency now (they are not making me happy either), and hopefully when the dust settles I'll have a new transformer, and an android compatible security system.
Untill then I'm stuck on an old desktop I built 5 years ago, and my wife's college desktop from 2000, sigh....
first things first though, turn the house into a fortress this weekend and install key logging and security software onto anything that boots.
I hope the thieves spontaneously combust.
Did you try downloading Plan B onto your tablet? You can do it remotely from https://market.android.com/details?id=com.lookout.labs.planb
Sorry to hear that
sorry to hear that too, but i like the idea of turning house into a fortress i guess this is some kind of a wake up call for most of us.

Sorry to hear the bad news!
It's too late for you now but I recently bought Seekdroid for my Android phone. It'll do what many other apps do i.e locate, lock, send an alarm signal but I especially like the apps ability to wipe the SD card and factory reset the device.

I completely forgot about plan B, I know that lookout can be installed in a kind of experimental manner and that is what I was planning on.... I just sent this out, hopefully they are connected.
**** that blows. Sucks how people have plans to beef up security and dont actually do it till something happens (which is where I am now, been planning for over a year and have yet to install any cameras etc).
Also what's good and bad about devices with proprietary ports is that I'm pretty sure the thief is gonna try to either stick an iPhone charger in it (harder on the tf then the streak which is same size as apples charger) and bust it. Leading the device to go out of power and then you can't track it.
I'd recommend you start doing the rounds on all pawnshops in your area. Print out pictures of stolen review and have serial numbers ready. Also try local PC repair shops as they too sell used PC's and electronics (one down the street from my recently got busted for selling stolen property).
When I was in high-school our house got robbed while on vacation and they made away with almost everything. They had stayed the night or two in the house and used all my dads power tools to break into the safe, stole all of my moms jewelry and my dads very rare coin collection along with family heirlooms. My parents were planning to put everything in a safe deposit box before leaving but something came up and we left on Sunday so bank was closed. Long story short, my dad hired a couple of local college students and gave each of them a list of what was missing and a new subwoofer that I was planning to install in my car is what got them. Turns out one of the low life POS thieves was my best friends older brother and the guy that organized it all, well his dad was really high up there in the police department and owned a private security firm. His dad gave him all the moeny he wanted and always had the hottest cars, turns out he did it be "gangster"....

Getting robbed blows, happened to us like in 2001 the day after Thanksgiving. We weren't out of town or anything, we had been over at my parents house for the normal Thanksgiving day festivities then went back home and later that evening we went out to eat pizza and came home to find the side door busted and tons of stuff gone. They made off with my Gameboy Advance and games, Dreamcast (but luckily none of my 200+ burned games ), Atari Jaguar + games, 3DO + Games, Playstation 2 + games, Xbox + games, wife's jewelry, mine and hers class rings, my deceased grandfather's watch I had just inherited a couple weeks before, my daughter's piggy bank. Needless to say we were devestated but the good news was I tracked down my Xbox via my brother in law's friend, some dude sold it to him and my bro in law was suspicous about the price paid so he called me and asked me for the serial # and they were a match! So he called the cops and they went and arrested the guy who sold it, and turned out he was wanted for robbery of over 20 homes in the city and I ended up going to court and watching him get sentenced to jail. We did get the Xbox back but nothing else, but at least we got the guy! I immediately had a security system installed and have had one ever since, but I still get weary everytime we leave the house for an extended amount of time.
Hope everything works out for you.
Just got my flat broken into last week, they took of with 2 macbooks, Htc Desire, external hdd and some jewelry. If insurance pays all i wont be too upset. But yes, everything portable is going to be properly passworded and backuped in the future...

Please let us know if Plan B works and you're able to nab those evil humans. I'm very interested to see how effective it is and it will warm me up inside to know that our TF's have the ability to capture thieves.
Sorry to hear that, I hope everything works out soon! Things are pretty mellow here in our rural area, heck the neighbors (we only have neighbors on our north side) kids leave their bikes out all night, though I wouldn't recommend doing that There hasn't ever been a break-in out here, we'd notice strange people or cars pretty quickly. We keep our doors locked on the house at night as well as the cars, but nothing beyond that. We have a Mendocino County Sheriff's Officer and two CHP Officer's in the development too, can't beat that
So far no dice with plan b. I changed my password after the break-in so I might change it back so the tablet can properly log in to market. Just got a new steel door installed on the house today. Tomorrow will a security gate installed.... me and the wife are debating on a camera system too.

I had the same thing happen to a friend. He got robbed while on vacation and it turned out to be a bunch of his friends that went over and stole everything. He got most of his stuff back after they found out who it was but it still bothers me that a "friend" would steal everything from another person they know(or anyone else for that matter)

Battery most likely died. That's the plus/down side of a proprietary port. Plus they can't use it. Down you can't track them.
Hope your insurance comes through with it.

that freakin sucks! I wish you and your wife the best of luck on recovering your losts.
I'm sure its not the battery because they snatched the power cord and charger since they were all connected at the time. I think the likely cause is that they can't figure out how to connect to wifi.

1saleday.com, midnightbox.com and woot.com have camera security systems sometimes, hugely discounted, for cheap. Might be worthwhile to check those sights everyday.

So my Nexus One phone mic is shot.. called Asurion

and they are sending me a Samsung Vibrant... I tried to hustle a G2X or Sensation, even a G2 and it didnt happen. The first thing I did was check the specs and Cyanforums to see if it was supported and it is, so it cant be that bad at all. Paying 130 even though I have an upgrade sitting there just waiting for The Nexus Prime. I figured Id ride this out for a couple months, upgrade to the N3 and sell this on craigslist for 100 bucks. Figured Id share my story with you guys. The mic stopped working due to my newborn sucking on it...lol people cant hear me 90% of the time. Im just highly upset I have to send back my Nexus One and part with it. The community here as well as the dev support is awesome. I hope to see you guys in the N3 section soon enough.

alternatives to beating a dead horse

I am opening this thread in hopes it will keep other threads cleaner. Motorola did not update to ICS. we know that.
One suggestion I have is JUMP ship. get a different device. You can get a pantech bust for about $100 on ebay with official ICS. I got a galaxy note for $150 myself. The atrix still goes for around $100.
I still have my atrix as a backup phone.
suggestion 2 keep going the rout of requesting cooperation from moto/punit etc. Yes you may feel it is falling on deaf ears and you may be correct.
My main suggestion and point of this thread is please stop posting about this in every atrix thread on XDA. THese threads are to help the atrix community and people must now search harder to find what they are looking for because they must wade through post after post of motohate then post after post of bickering at other members.
please keep our threads clean
if you have any suggestions of what can be done or good deals on alternative phones post them here
Moderators if you think this thread is unneeded or not being used please delete
About jumping ship. I do realize that my suggestion does not help those with all the docks and accessories as much. I do not know what the docks sell for. And I can't speak of the quality of the burst. I do know it requires a smaller sim card. I was just suggesting it as a means to swap for a device with similar specs that is on official ICS with no major cost in the end. I am pleased with the quality of my note but I realize that I got it almost $100 less than average used price
I cant buy another phone...I dont have the money and I have a contract with an operator...and the note in my country cost a lot much than my atrix...so any other sugestion???
from the (M)ATRIX...
I am in US and realize I got a great deal on note. And Also realize that even buying burst even though it has little cost in end has upfront cost of nearly 100 US. I am on straightalk att sim. I am still burnt by moto. I have a nonupgradeable device that is still under manufacture warranty so I don't want to get rid of it yet. hopefully more people will have suggestions as well
I sold my Atrix for a good price ($200) without the lapdock.
then again, I sold it to someone who asks me everyday about how to do stuff, so I consider the extra price as a bonus for all the things I've helped him with.
I got a Note and never looked back. Never again, Motorola. Never.
Still, I'm stuck with an Atrix because my boss has it and he always wants a different ROM. It's a good phone. Such a shame Motorola was backing it.
Well...in my country (argentina) a new atrix on a contract cost 1800 pesos argentinos and a Note on a contract cost 3500 pesos argentinos...so if I want to buy it w/o a contract the note cost 5000 pesos argentinos.
So Im f***...thats why I still pushing moto or punit to release the source code...
from the (M)ATRIX...
AT&T has their own trade in program and currently they value my device at $36. Obviously that's a bit on the low side, but the reality is that something is only worth what you can sell it for, whether that's $10 or $100, and ebay is loaded with them, especially after the ICS cancellation.
That said, I'm stuck in a contract with mine for the next few months with no way out and no money to jump ship. Once opportunity does present itself, I will have to see what's available at the time, but tbh, this was my first true smart phone, yet I'm still feeling stupid for getting it.
Get a phone used that is older than the 4g and has been upgraded to ICS.
My thoughts are you have always been able to upgrade your PC, laptop and other computers at will. Why are phones and tablets any different?
I think the answer is simple: greed. There have always and only ever been excuses that all point to controlling consumer options and taking away freedoms in order to accomplish a bottom line.
For that, I do not believe buying another device will matter. We always end up supporting someone's idea of controlling my content. Screw that. I bought the device, I should be allowed to install what I want. Not what ATT or Motorola or Apple or even Google wants but what I want.
OK, done ranting.

I do not know how it is in the rest of the world but in the US craigslist is a good source for used phones. as with anything though there are also scammers out there. It was sad to see atrix price drop after ics cancelation. I think they went for almost 200 before to 150 after and now about 150. I got my wife a nexus 7 recently. I know it will stay updated but felt a bit bad purchasing from Motorola parent company Google.
My Atrix is just the latest in a long line of attempts to get a good deal for cheap that partially failed. Got my Atrix just before the announced cancellation of the update. Only good thing is I'm not stuck with a contract. I would have made another phone choice, if I'd jknow was being lied to my Moto.
For me its not so much about them failing on the upgrade. Its more about moto actively trying to keep us from getting ICS or any other rom on our own. Locking bootloaders on updates and ordering cease and desist on the leaked kernel. Its a big FU right in all of our faces. I just can't believe a company would actively do this to their customers, not even their regular customers... the enthusiast. makes no sense to me, before the atrix moto is the only phone company I would have. Now its the only one I refuse to buy.

On top of money and carrier contracts we may be stuck in, there's also the issue of carrier compatibility. For those of us with AT&T, I'm sure there are devices they don't offer that will work, and some may even have full capabilities, but when it comes to their current offerings, it's pretty slim pickings, regardless of what OS you want.
my brother asked me today if he could use a s3 from sprint on att. I said sadly no. would be nice since sprint phones always seem to go for less money. probably because they have a worse network. I told him to buy it anyway because they wanted 150 for it and I know it is worth more even if the esn is bad. I have been watching for a good used dual core that is updated for my wife. I am not in a hurry because I want a deal. she has atrix as well for now. been looking at lg nitro and s2 s3 onex. probably some others
I picked up a pantech burst for my wife yesterday for 65$. waiting for simcard cutter. dual core and ICS. plus I can still sell atrix for more than that
Haven't been on XDA for a while. What am I missing? There's plenty of stable Jellybean ROMs around.
Fingerprints a gimmick and you can get a camera app. How good do you want your phone camera to be anyway?
Not being inflammatory but get a ROM and enjoy it until your phone dies a natural death.
In fact mine died and I brought a new one for cheap, that's how happy I am with Th3bills Liquid Smooth.

I've got a new phone. i717 note on cm10. a pantech burst on official ics. and will soon be playing with a HTC desire that will have fully functional jellybean. I like playing with these old phones then selling them for more than I paid. and my atrix got replaced under warranty and there is no way as of now to unlock the bootloader.
Even when/if a new kernal is built my atrix is locked. Mine will most likely be sold soon but I want to try the soak test first. Might keep it for a while though as it is under warranty
if there’s a time machine,i would choose Nexus S rather other than Atrix 4g. The crude reality slapped my face, how foolish i was.

[Q] Why does the VZW version seem different?

Some accessories fit, some dont. is that because of the wireless charging?
Ive read its the worst of all the versions.
is there any truth to this? Im trying to decide between this and the HTC one.
Phone that came out in April vs one of the newest and top of the line.. Idk what your smoking

The Verizon one has wireless charging and the back buttons are different, I have not messed around with any of the other carriers G2, but do have the Verizon one. Watch the droid-life video comparing the Verizon and AT&T versions of the phone, I don't have the link handy

It also apparently lacks the 3rd microphone for noise cancelling, so it just has the two, one used for noise cancellation.
well, i dont foresee as many cases become available for the verizon version only when the others are all the same. thats a huge factor for me
my job doenst require me to use my phone from the hours of 8am to 3pm. So battery isnt really a big issue for me.
this has been a real tough decision for me and im just trying to do as much research as possible before pulling the trigger today.
Ill probably go with the HTC one and switch within the 14 days if im not happy with it.

I am very happy with my Verizon G2. It has to be the best phone I have had yet. Screen is very good in direct sun light. I have yet to see any type of lag with my phone. I am rooted. There seems to be decent Dev support with this phone. Very good batter life, and it is very quick to charge too. Size wise, the phone is really not any larger then my old Razr Maxx, and the G2 is less weight.
The one and only issue I have is that Otter Box has no made a Defender Series case for this phone. I am using a case with a belt clip that I found on ebay that cost me 8 bucks that works pretty well.
