Hey all, I was in John Lewis playing with the new Z2. I noticed that the live wallpapers were really slow and the transition between pages seemed a low frame rate. No way near as fluid as on the Galaxy Notes. I was a bit surprised, surely as the latest and greatest device it can eat any live wallpaper for breakfast?
I was planning on buying the Z2 LTE but I was a little put off by what I saw. I closed down all the running apps on the device but it was still not smooth. I put on the stock water drop live wallpaper and it ran even more stuttery than on my Nexus 7 (1st gen)!! Surely that can't be right.
I expect my Dualboot Games live wallpapers to run buttery smooth on my next tablet!
Was that just a freak occurrence or is that just how it is? Hopefully one of you guys can put my mind at rest or I will pass on this one.
Forget this stupid stock launcher. Totally irrelevant.
I don't understand how people judge a device by preinstalled crap.
Install another launcher (Nova, whatever), and there you go.
Live wallpapers are battery eating, superfluous s**t anyway.

What is there to understand? I had to judge it on that cos it was a display model in the shop. I cant go customising it lol. Thats why Im on here asking the question from people that own one.
Was it the stock Sony launcher at fault? Is the stock launcher really that bad or is the device just like that regardless? For a premium device I would expect the stock launcher to perform at a decent level at least.
As for live wallpapers being superfluous s**t, that's irrelevant. Its been a feature of the OS for a long time now and I was surprised that the device struggled so badly with it. Like I say with seemingly less performance than my Nexus 7.
I was ready to buy one but from what I saw in the shop it made me nervous to drop £500 on it. So Z2 Tablet owners how is the device performing with 3rd party launchers? Im really expecting it to be silky smooth even with a live wallpaper running (obviously I understand some LWP's are badly made and slow no matter what device).
Any comments appreciated!

Are you complaining about the launcher or the wallpaper? If it's the launcher, I barely see any lag at all. For the wallpaper it will depend on the wallpaper, the tablet is very powerful with a decent graphics chip, but if whichever wallpaper you are using is badly coded it won't make a difference.
When the tablet in the shop was fresh out of the box, it's no wonder that it was lagging. For instance, the media scanner will run and other first-time apps and background services will be started. An Android device is always only at it's real snappiness a few hours after first start.

It wasn't new out the box, it was on the display. They had rows of demo units on display. I closed down all the apps too. There was a lot open from people playing around with it.

It was more the wallpaper. I tried the default Android water ripple one and it was really slow, slower than on my Nexus7. Also the standard Sony wallpaper. Swiping through the screens it just wasn't as fluid as the Galaxy Note also on display. Must say it shocked me a bit.
Do you own one? Im after gauging what its like for people that actually own one. Because I know what I saw on display but I only had a short time with the device. I am asking what its like for you guys that own one. Is it smooth and fluid with 3rd party launchers? Do live wallpapers slow it down a lot? I know there are badly made LWPs but Im talking about good wallpapers, does it handle them ok?
I had been waiting for the Z2 to come out but after playing with it Im having second thoughts. I want my next tablet to be hassle free. I dont even want to be flashing roms, Im fed up with that, I want it to be slick straight out the box.
Im considering one of the Tab Pro's or even a Win 8 Pro tablet. I played with a Sony Tap 11, I know its a different device altogether but that thing impressed me! Its so light considering its a full i5 PC.
Slick straight out of the box? Seriously, take an iPad or a Windows machine.

Yes I own one, I've had no problems with lag of any sort.
Thanks Jai23, I will take that on board.
Hasenbein that's funny but sadly true!
I am going to have a think about it and try get another demo of the Z2. What I would really like is the latest Asus Transformer that comes with Tegra 4 graphics. That's the kind of graphics grunt I know I would like but they don't do an LTE version for some reason.
The Adreno 330 in the Tablet Z2 has at least (!) as much "graphics grunt" as the Tegra 4! If you notice lag, it's not because of the "graphics grunt"!

Ok guys, based on your replies I will go give the Z2 another demo. Especially now I've learnt that the Tap 11 isn't 4G.
My next tablet absolutely must have 4G. Its surprising there isn't much choice when it comes to 4G on tablets. All top end phones have it but not tablets.

I have been using my Z2 with some high res games and have not had any problems, a fantastic tablet.
I have gone ahead and ordered one, delivery Friday.
Its been a long time since I bought Sony. I used to buy nothing but Sony but their build quality and service went down hill and let me down so I boycotted them. Their latest stuff caught my eye though. We are in this together now guys..

I dont see why you wouldnt try customising it. on the demo model in john lewis, I found an open wifi network, logged on with my google account, installed antutu and minion rush and tested them both to see how well it ran (very nice). Then I removed my account from it again. problem is the tab pro 10.1 also ran very nicely!
Also, there are going to be a number of software updates from sony that will fix issues like poor live wallpaper response. Although I too think they are resource hogging garbage!

Late reply considering that you've bought it but the reason that the store one was laggy was because it had been on for a LONG time. Given it a reboot should have fixed it.

Yep very well might have been that. I did try closing all in the switcher but maybe a reboot was needed. The poorly optimised Sony live wallpaper doesnt help either. Makes the device look slow! Im happy with it now!

Received mine yesterday, and it is pretty damn nice. I had the TF700 for a while, and it seems so slow compared to the Z2, that old thing.
But you do have to install your own launcher, dont use that Sony crap, not so bad compared to usual stock, but other launchers are so much more customizable, why would you want to keep it stock!
Just waiting for a root option without losing the ability to backup DRM keys...

So to make my Question short
id like to know to know how well the phone performs after having used for at least 24 hours. I hear People complain about it lagging and being slow when switching homescreens specially if you add TouchWiz3 Widgets????
Im thinking of ordering one but want to hear from you guys. I Really dont support Samsung too much because well, THEY dont support their customers either. They say one thing with updates and promises but at the end they never fullfill their words. Any ideas???
If theres samsung widgets on TW then yes it lags.. I use tw without samsungs widgets and dont get any slowness going on.
I personaly havent seen any slowness yet. But read others do. Maybe im lucky..

yea just use adw launcher or launcher pro. Fast as can be with either of those. But im digging the TW for now without the widgets...
Awesome. Thanks for the replies. i guess ill be picking one up later around 6pm at T-Mobile Corp. Store.
Only Thing i hate is after playing with nexus one, mytouch slide, HD2, i will be missing the Led Flash which i still wonder why they would not add such feauture.
Kinda makes me think its because they want to launch a new phone not too far away and add Flash so people want to upgrade their current phones to that:/
I am using Samsung Widgets in 3 of 5 my screens with no Lag; I find it curious anyone is having lag unless you have like 20 homescreens packed with widgets. The hummingbird processor in this beast has currently edged out all of the top of the line android phones for CPU speed and it also has the fastest GPU (PowerVR SGX540) as well, offering performance of almost 2x compared to the Evo and Nexus. Lag should not be a happening thing
I have had mine since Friday, used it with TW and samsung widgets without issue, but I like the customization from adw so I have been using that for the last couple days. So far I have no complaints about speed, just hoping the gps and compass issues get fixed soon.
I have 3 widgets, one of them being Buddies now and get very little lag. Only the pause when coming back to the home screen (not always happening)
New owner I have one widget no lag at all.

I wish I could say the same. I have one widget, feeds and updates, and when it tries to refresh, it lags like hell. If I add the buddies now widget on another screen, just those 2 tw widgets are enough to make this feel like my original mytouch. Very disappointed in the lag.

Could you describe the lag in more detail? How many screens do you have? What wallpaper are you using? Are those the only 2 widgets you are using? Is the lag a skipping or is the phone not responsive at all? Is it better after a reboot?

I always love ADW because of the options and ESPECIALLY the "Drop to Uninstall" option.
but ADW would be just another program running, using more RAM. less use the better.
Yeah from what I can tell the TWLauncher is pretty light on the battery.
i just got rid of the 7 screens and am just using 1. i am gonna see if this helps with the overall performance of the phone. (from the homescreen> menu (haptic button)>edit> then delete the homescreens to your heart's content . You can always put them back by using the same method

I currently have five screens, one has Weather Widget and battery widget, another has the feeds and updates widget, then 2 widgets for stocks (that only update when i tell them to) and youtube and google search widgets. No live wallpaper either. When adding more TW widgets, swiping screens is slower than my old mytouch.

I was running fine for a couple of days and then I started noticing the lag. Selecting the Settings menu would take a couple of seconds. Camera would take a while. I have also had 3 or 4 freezes and had to reboot my phone. Hardly ever happened on the G1 in two years. Would get a black screen for 3-4 seconds in between operations. No spinner. Initially kept thinking the phone was going to sleep.
I have 5 screens with the buddies widget, 2 picture frames, the double daily time widget and Google Search. Shouldn't be causing this hardware to so much as break sweat. I tried removing all widgets. But it didn't help.
What did help was rooting the phone and running the script to move the apps to NAND. But of course there's a limitation on the number of apps. So far, after doing this, it's much better. I'll see if this holds.
The lags have ruined an otherwise outstanding experience on this phone. I'm very disappointed with this performance on this hardware.
What's interesting here is that it's working well for some of you. Which makes it inexplicable why moving the apps to NAND should make such a difference. If this were a problem with the cache, it should have been a problem on every phone. Don't understand this.
The good news is that almost all of the problems I have with the phone should be software fixable.
When it works well, it truly is an amazing device.
I'm very interested in doing the lag fix but I'm intimidated by the process. Is it worth trying to learn ADB? Or should I wait until September for the 2.2 release?

Do you know where I can suggest the dev some features ?
Most important for me is : set the default screen to the first one not the centre, put the "1-icon dock" on the right or left and not only in the centre, be able to choose the icons background.
Fantastic job for the rest. Super fast...
Edit : can someone confirm me that ADWNotifier works with this ?

The refund period recently changed to 15 minutes, contrary to the 24h earlier. What kind of person proposed this change, I don't know. This short timespan barely left me with any time to test ADW EX, so I ended up asking a refund because I don't feel like buying a product I'm not sure I like.
In short: it's not the devs fault.
Liking it...
.. but doesnt feel faster to me compared to launcherpro
Yeah sure you can set the homescreen transitions to fly by alot quicker than you can in LP, but overall LP just feels smoother to me.
Apart from that, my currentwidget now hovers between 9-16ma in standby, where my phone was consistant between 6-9ma with LP.

Certainly too short to really try a launcher that looks and acts seemingly like another one. Not enough time to find out any specific nuances that we may like.
In fairness though, I can't see any reason why anyone would change launchers to use this. They all look the same to me, with a few "little" features that hardly make the transition worthwhile.
Not knocking the app itself. Just don't get reinventing the wheel, and then releasing newer versions of it.

Haha nicely worded.
been using LP for about 3 weeks now, love it, however i just got ADW, been using it for like 30 minutes, and extremely loving it.
The one important thing i noticed:
w/ 7 screens in LP fully packed w/ widgets, folder, apps...when you 'pinch' the screen to view the preview screens it stutters. Like it lags the first time you 'pinch' it, after that initial swipe, it is fine. This got really annoying, especially when coming out of sleep mode.
w/ 7 screens in ADW EX fully packed w/ widgets, folder, apps...when you 'pinch' it is still smooth as silk, coming out of sleep mode as well.
I'm still comparing the two for now, i'll keep you all updated
comparing both w/ DS's SupperRam 1.5
Every time I load up any of my LWPs (NexusKang, Light Grid), all I get is crappy homescreen and launcher performance? Is anyone having this issue or is my Atrix just garbage?

This phone cant even handle 3D launcher animations.
Is this some kind of joke? Honestly... what is going on here?
My 3d launcher animations haven't had any problem. The phone to me is definitely very fast... and I didn't have any problems with live wallpaper.... then again I'm coming from a heavily modded 3GS that was pretty slow to begin with lol.

I'm owner of a atrix and also a nexus s.
The only cool thing I found on the atrix its how it plays flash content. That's it! Lol. I hate motoblur and is the first time I tried it. Motoblur its pathetic and slow ****! I ended up installing adw launcher ex to make it some how better ..I'm running same launcher on my NS and it runs smoothly as ****. Transitions are flawless and nice. Not the case on atrix. I've found that Live Wallpapers reduce performance for all the phones I've owned (i.e. Captive, Inspire, and Atrix). I don't find that the Atrix is affected more so than the others. In fact, I think the Atrix runs Jumpgate better than the Inspire did.

That's good to hear. Maybe you had something running in the background that was eating up resources?
I betcha the nexus S running android 2.3 has something to do with it too, doesn't 2.3 have a lot more hardware accelerated graphics in it?
I'm expecting the atrix to get a big speed boost from 2.3, having said that, I'm coming from an old G1, and the Atrix has been ridiculously fast compared to that, emails open immediately, unlock is instant, any app opens right away.
and I can use Trapster again it was unusably slow on the G1 (with cyanogenmod nightly btw)
I'm really confused why people are having so many issues... I've been running LWP since day 1 with no slow down. I rooted the phone and loaded up launcher pro almost immediately, but I can't imagine that's the reason why everything's been smooth for me.

I've found that Live Wallpapers reduce performance for all the phones I've owned (i.e. Captive, Inspire, and Atrix). I don't find that the Atrix is affected more so than the others. In fact, I think the Atrix runs Jumpgate better than the Inspire did.
edit: Also, I found that Motoblur ran faster than LauncherPro.

LauncherPro runs like crap on the atrix, idky. Motoblur runs good. I am currently using golauncher, runs very well.
Also i have had 0 problems with lwps...all run great.
Any update on that?
I was told that Samsung's Galaxy S wallpapers (e.g. Ocean Wave) don't run on the Atrix AT ALL. It may be the Tegra 2 architecture, or the qHD screen. You can try it:

What about other GPU-intensive wallpapers, like Galactic Core? How smooth do they run?
So I am seeing a lot of posts saying that ICS has smoother screen transition.
This is in fact not true.
I know you guys don't want to feel disappointed about something you've been constantly crying about for the last 3 months but get real.
Try any of the HD quality live wallpapers(not the included ones). Screen transition is just as choppy as it was on Honeycomb. No improvement what so ever. Could be even worse.
This was tested on a TF101 that was factory reset before flashing a full(not update) ICS. No old apps or anything that could possibly hinder the performance.
Guess what makes screen transition smooth as butter on ICS? Using a 3rd party launcher app, just like it did on HC.
Back when people were crying everyday and spamming the forums about Asus not releasing ICS for TF101, their biggest and commonly used justification for their incessant whining was that ICS will make everything fast.
Really? So far I haven't seen any noticeable improvement in performance.
What did I notice? Different looking status bar and the ability to swipe things away. Oh and a few more options in the settings.
Oh yes, this was so worth all that crying.
Live wallpapers are very inefficient and have always caused problems especialy with larger screens
ICS is smoother as it has been redesigned and not quickly hacked together like honeycomb was and if you don't notice it well then you should just get an iPad
I would suggest deleting your post before you start a flamewar

3rd party launcher app makes screen transition smooth even with HD live wallpapers, on both ICS and HC.
Give me some examples of ICS actually being noticeably smoother.
Nope, I don't want an ipad. Never liked apple ****. I love Android for its freedom and flexibility.

Yes 3rd party software does make things better thats why we are here at xda isn't it?
BROWSER
youmustbenewhere Its a common joke when people are saying android is bad
lol, don't compare it with custom launcher. Stock HC vs Stock ICS please
Chrome Beta is the tits. Much better than stock or any of the other browsers I've tried. So there's that.
I don't know why everyone's in such an uproar over how smooth their launcher scrolling is. I'm more interested in how the apps perform than how pretty it looks when I launch those apps.

Live wallpapers are inefficient
Live wallpapers do horrifying things to ****ty SoCs
Tegra2 is a ****ty SoC
So no matter what Tegra2 will suck with any lwp, and really bad ones will suck worse. BTW, get yourself a copy of Kitteh Face Software's Jungle LWP...then tell me how smooth your special launcher is. Jungle even brings my GS2's Exynos to its knees.

I never used tat one on Honeycomb, but scrolling with it on ICS is quite acceptable, even while playing music.
Silly, it wasn't the smoother transitions I was looking for in Ice Cream Sandwich, but rather the numerous other improvements made across the system like:
more options and developer controls, redesigned apps and better theming throughout, features like face unlock and forced hardware acceleration, and of course the ability to install ics only apps like Chrome!
Ice Cream Sandwich runs like an absolute dream on the TF101. Anyone who thinks otherwise hasn't done a full wipe, hasn't used a TF101 with ics, or is just straight hating.

I don't use any live wallpapers... screen transitions are great... much better than Honeycomb.
This is a KNOWN issue with ICS. Even on the Galaxy Nexus, some Live Wallpapers are horrible. It's something to do with the way their coded. Once the developer updates and supports ICS, the LWP will be smooth.
The problem has to do with "Wallpaper Scrolling" from the launchers. If you Disable wallpaper scrolling, the LWP will also be smooth.

I never said live wallpapers are efficient. Why are you so defensive? Lol.
My point was that ICS did not improve screen transition to a noticeable degree, contrary to what others are saying. I just used as an example the live wallpaper and the fact that 3rd party launcher apps are able to achieve what ICS or HC can't.
If you read my entire post, it's not about live wallpapers or screen scrolling.
What I am pointing out is that all those ****tards, who spammed this forum with their QQ and whine about Asus not releasing ICS and how ICS was going to be something super amazing, should realize that their QQing was just a big waste of time. ICS is literally just a minor update. Really brings nothing new to the table. Really not worth all that crying and waiting.
I am testing tons of apps right now. I really don't see any noticeable improvement in performance except a few trivial things that were already achieved on HC with 3rd party apps.
Have you tried the new camera app? Faster and better than ever

Regular wallpapers were always smooth even on Honeycomb. Seriously, there is no improvement as far as regular wallpaper screen transition is concerned. Stop being delusional.
Unfortunate for you I guess. My transformer is definitely more responsive. Is it so amazing I'd die without it? No. But all in all the keyboard is definitely more responsive. I love ICS for the many other little but lovely changes to Android as a whole.
But to speak to your point, yes ... alot of those " QQ ****tards " who are disappointed, well good! Idk why people would think an OS update would give them blowjobs or end world hunger.
I'm happy for what it has brought. Though I wasn't dying for ICS since I had it on my vibrant so I already knew what was in store

I have the light grid LWP on my 101, and it was fin in HC, and it's just as fine in ICS. Don't see what all the hubbub is about.
The low-level code for ICS is the same as 3.0 (HC) which has always supported h/w acceleration. People coming from GB will see a bigger benefit. Here's a great article from Dianne Hackborn, a Google engineer, that explains how Android handles graphics. Memory bandwidth is the biggest constraint and Teg2's pretty weak in that area and doesn't support NEON. In other words, s/w can only go so far.

Not really. I never saw perfectly smooth launcher transitions even with a regular static wallpaper. The sluggish scrolling is completely eliminated in ICS with a static wallpaper.
I did a no-wipe OTA update.
It's been getting a lot of hate, and I can't figure out why. I'm coming from Sense (which I liked a lot, and this one doesn't really compare to), but I'm not seeing anything too terrible about the stock launcher here. It's just kind of meh.
Are you guys just seeing a ton of lag? Because I don't think I am.
I would agree with you. It's less wow than Sense, but I like it better than TW. It's smooth enough for my liking. I don't have any lag. I'm still learning it, as I've been with Sense or TW for last 2 years...
I just wish I could theme it the way I would like to. It's nice they have themes available for download, but they all look like they were designed for teenage girls in mind for the most part....too pastel and too bright. I'm more of a fan of darks and rather violent looking...

Yeah - me too. I've been on sense since the evo 4g, and never used any other smartphone ui, so this one is taking some getting used to for me also. I'm starting to get used to the brightness and how colorful everything is, and some of it's even starting to grow on me. I'm not seeing much lag - and I tried nova, but it broke stock messaging, and smart notice (which I didn't think I would like at all, but I've really been digging it).
and the less said about tw, the better

I still have an Evo 4G. My 6 year old uses it to play games with...she still loves the thing. Runs great, except the usb port broke straight out of it, so charging requires battery removal until I fix it...LOL
I was thinking of doing the "Blinkfeed for all" install on the G4, but really like how UX works, though Accuweather's predictions have been terrible so far. Keeps telling me to bring an umbrella for rain and it hasn't rained here in over a week LOL.
I honestly didn't actually like anything about the stock launcher and went to Google now launcher.

Same. Why do I want these stupid smart cards when Google already forced their Google now cards down my throat
Because it's not Nova.
Seriously though, I'm too attached to the gesture controls that came with Nova Prime to use any other launcher. When combined with Five Wallpaper, I get a mostly buttery smooth experience with numerous customization options. I don't mind some of the LG background items like menu theme.

Well I can understand hating TouchWiz, what a pile of @#$%.
I spent a full week with the stock LG launcher and while it's fine, functional, works well, etc... I just prefer Sense and BlinkFeed better (too bad they can't build a decent device) so as of today I have sense and blinkfeed on my G4 and it's sweet!!!

I have a feeling there will be a decent number of us on the G4 that were HTC users who just couldn't see upgrading to the m9 and will be missing Sense.
TW is just so heavy...coming from Sense, it was like going from driving a Lotus to driving a Dumptruck.
I don't hate the stock launcher, but I do prefer Nova. Mostly because I can resize the grid. I like to use 6x5. Plus I can resize widgets any way i want. And of course it's faster, plus gestures.
I used it all of 1 minute while the google experience launcher downloaded. But then again I came from an 3 years of nexus use.
Stock launcher is actually really cool. I love love love the domino transition effect. My only complaint was the lack of icon packs and the icon background (to make them uniform). The theme packs were ok but contained limited icons.
Nothing I didnt like but what it lacked aka what Nova could do more.

Stock OEM launchers are terrible. Had to switch to Nova after a day. It's clunky and barely customizable. And it has terrible, terrible themes.
What's good about it and the only thing good about it is the Smart Bulletin and Smart Notice widget. Also, LG calendar widget is good, too.

I was really hung on the Google Launcher on my Nexus. So I downloaded on my LG4 as well.. But it only gives 4 apps per row. That's way too little on a 5.5 inch phone..
The stock launcher isn't bad.. Only think I would like to see is that a swipe to the right would give me Google Now instead of LG thingie..
I dont hate the stock launcher im coming from the note 4 with tw so this is a step up but i prefer nova on all phones

I think I remember the Stock launcher being somewhat customizable as far as number of apps in the bottom row (I like 7) and it allows widgets to resize. The Themes do kinda suck but still pretty cool to have an option. They are just icon packs basically.
The App Grid doesn't really bother me any more. I have 3 homescreens. Full Page Twitter Widget, Blank Home, Full Page Facebook Widget (currently broke).
If they released a huge LG Home MIUI theme with tons of icons, then I could use it. Otherwise, I like my icons to be uniform (similar background / style). Plus for some reason Verizon pulled out the themes support on their G4

I guess the only thing you are not able to double tap to sleep your device, correct? I love Google Launcher I used to have it on my G3 , but with xposed and GEL Settings so I have all the functionalities.
I played with it for a couple of hours then went to my go-to Nova!! Especially don't like that the launcher doesn't rotate.
