Galaxy S5 3G to LTE Hand Off Issues - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I am casting a broad net on the internet here to get a consensus with what is going on with the LTE problem many are having with their S5''s
Does anyone NOT have an issue with their phone going from 3G to LTE then back again. A lot of people (including myself) have to toggle airplane mode on/off just to pick up LTE. It does not automatically connect for some reason.
For added information, I am in a non LTE launched city but have been testing by a known LTE tower. when I drive up to it the S5 will not switch over to LTE. When I toggle airplane mode it works.
I guess long story short. Is there anyone out there that does not have this issue?
Thanks a ton for any information!

I don't have that problem I always have LTE unless I travel far out of the city which is normal with all the LTE phones I have had.

Think it's an issue with your provider, I've tried LTE/3G with four different providers here in Denmark without any problems.

Could be an issue with the SIM.
Also, which version of the S5 do you have? EU, US, Asia, etc? BRanded? Unbranded?

I do not believe it is actively searching for a LTE signal all the time. It takes a min or two for my phone to pick up a LTE signal once I'm in a known coverage area. I've done the airplane mode toggle before as well..... It forces the signal search right away.

I'm sorry I should have mentioned that I am on sprint. I will be going into a launched LTE city here today and will do more testing.

Yeah I'm a Sprint user too. All of my Sprint LTE devices have behaved similarly. It takes a few minutes of being in a known LTE coverage area before my phones (both IOS and Android) would connect. Its because the radio isn't actively searching all the time.... I'm not sure what the actual search interval is, but it's not constant. And again my Iphones behaved just the same as my current S5.
My Evo 4G was constantly searching for a wimax signal when I wasnt in a coverage area.... it really sapped the battery because that radio was always on the hunt for that wimax signal.

Got no issues of this kind

im on tmobile im having the same issue ,never had this problem with my s3lte

I don't have this issue, however on one occasion at work I lost 4g signal which is usually at 2 bars, and it sat there and didnt connect to 4g again until I did airplane mode, then it came back fine. But this is the one and only time I have had the issue.

this is a sprint issue
you need to wait until they finialy decide to update their towers to handle the new triband phones, they claim they will be done with all the updates by the middle of the summer, i got sick out their sub-par coverage and took all my lines over to verizon... no regrets
details about their issues are here, it is a long read but good:
http://s4gru.com/index.php?/blog/1/...-due-to-circuit-switched-fallback-technology/

S5 LTE Hand-off Loss of Signal
I'm a Sprint customer on Long Island, New York and I've been having the issues as well. I had to deactivate the S5 because it would lose data and even phone service sporadically without any warning. Sprint's solution is to go into Airplane mode for 5 minutes then back, but that's 5 minutes without service after noticing that the service is gone (and losing how many calls/messages). My girlfriend has one too and probably misses about half her calls (and texts come in late constantly) What happens in an emergency? I recently blogged about this. Isn't Sprint opening themselves up to liability by selling the phones while these issues are known internally?

Im in Denmark too, and i have the problem with Telenor, but did not have the problem with Telia, unfortunately i have to stay with telenor, work phone

You didn't do a forum search or you would already know that it doesn't affect everyone. There are myriad threads about this and the concensus is that it is carrier dependent.
Open a support ticket with your carrier. Also, the 4.4.3 update is said to address this bug, so that is something that you might want to look into.
.

Just a little update, put on download booster, and after that no problems whit disconnect from network, will see later when i leave home to see what happens then.

3G drops to GSM when receiving calls and during calls

I searched all the threads and found nothing on this as far as I can see. I have been having this since day one with my G1. Every time I receive a call on my G1 or during the call it drops from 3G to GSM. I had stock T-Mo roms on my G1 (Pre/Post Cupcake) then JF 1.51 and now cyanogen 4.0.2 and this problem persists. I called T-Mo a few times on this and they exchanged my G1 3 times and gave me a new battery and charger free of charge. Does anyone else have this issue or know of a work around? This happens when I am at home and work. I travel for work to different locations and it still happens. When my phone rings it automatically drops 3G and goes to GSM (no icon next to the radio icon in the status bar). While making calls it stays on 3G for about a few seconds before it craps out and drops to GSM. It totally skips EDGE and GPRS. T-Mo said they sent out radio antenna tech's to the antennas near my home and they said all is fine and dandy. I live In Queens NY and work in the Bronx. When I travel to Brooklyn its the same as well as driving though Manhattan. I hope someone can help me with this.

ive always had this as well .. just never considered it a bug lol ... but i could see why someone would wanna keep their 3g while on a call .. reminds me of how sidekicks would lose data connectivity due to a call

Could you elaborate?
If you've had 3 G1's and a tech says there's nothing wrong with the network then it's clearly an issues with cupcake, be it a feature or a bug...
I don't really see why you would want to keep data conectivity while in a call, (unless you're downloading something in the background..?) so it sounds like a way to save battery..

Here's a perfect example where 3G would rule when working properly.
I'm talking to my wife on my BT headset while driving home from work. I have my G1 on my dash with google maps running with traffic patterns showing. While talking I am able to talk clearly on 3G and still see where traffic is building so I can avoid it. Being stuck in rush hour in NYC sux homeless man [email protected] Whenever I do this and my 3G connection drops my call quality drops and we both hear it while we're talking and then it cuts in and out and the call drops then I dont get updates. It's a feature I would really like to have. Even when Im working and talking and downloading a new update of an app. This happens when I am at a static location as well. I know driving from cell tower to cell tower can have bad effects but it does the same when I'm just at home or any of my work locations. When 3G works properly which is rare its amazing. Its helped me get un lost and find my way many of times.
Point being when T-Mo released the 3G statement they said all users with 3G phones will expierence higher call quality from the extra bandwidth. Why would they cap or or disable it when they are promoting it? I see the the point of saving battery life but it still shouldnt be happening. 3G is made for that feature to work voice + data being accessed together.
It might just be there 3g network, imo tmobile reception is horrible. Like at my house it is so f'ed up, I can sit in my chair and have 3 bars then walk 2 feet and lose service. It does this all through my house and at my work. They said it must be something in the buildings I am in, bull**** I say because ATT never does that nor did vzw when I used them.
same thing happens with me and 3g and calls..also about the house thing, hows this one for u ill be sitting in the same spot and have good 3g reception and all of a sudden it drops to edge. I know a way around this is to set phone to 3G only but then in areas where theres non im screwed
I don't get it. My wife who had the original iPhone and then 3g and now 3gs never had this issue. She would stay on Edge and 3g depending if she waned to save batery life. My old BB 8700g would always stay on Edge never drop to GSM in my apartment. My 3G doesnt even fall to Edge it goes right to GSM. This is really annoying.
every t-mobile phone I have does this
I'm pretty sure its normal
No one knows if this is a hardware, software, or network problem. Except maybe HTC/T-Mobile/Google.
If your phone stays connected to 3G, it's all good. If it drops down to EDGE, even if for half a second, it will NOT reconnect to 3G until you hang up.

If any of those 3 know they should fix it or at the very least advertise that the calls you make are dropped to the lower bandwidth of the GSM network.
T-Mo finally got 3G for the last year don't dumb it down guys. Fix this.
Yes it is true once your phone drops beneath 3G it will not go to 3G until you hang up the call.
try running 3g only or wdma only by creating phone info shortcut on anycut .. im going to try that out and see if it ever drops .. should be a temporary fix for you atleast with the whole maps thing and such but if you ever in an edge only are your screwed

I changed it to wcdma only in phone info. Hopefully this works. Everywhere I travel to throughout NYC has 3G. Hopefully this works. Also I have noticed that when downloading anything from 3G be it the market or browser it would drop from 3G to Edge as well.

Did she use att or tmobile with the iphone? Because att has a much stronger 3g network then tmobile which could be why. I am pretty sure it is something to do with tmobiles network and not your phone, perhaps your area has to many users for it to stay on 3G. I have read about how the cell towers work and they have only so many bands for each user to access at any given time so if tmobile doesn't have enough towers or those things mounted on the towers it may be set up so you only get 3G for data usage and not calls since they don't technically require it to work.

My wife is on ATT. Isn't lower frequency better at penetrating through walls and such? (T-Mo 1700 MHz and 2100 MHz compared to ATT 1800 MHz) They haven't booted their 850 MHz antennas yet so I hear.
If that is true then why not boot me down to Edge or gprs why all the way down to gsm? I been living in the same area for 26 years. I have been with T-Mo before they even had antennas in my area and walking outside was the only way to get a signal with my phone. Now I get full reception in and out of my apartment and 3G connectivity in my apartment with a signal strength of -93dBm through out my apartment on 3G and -79 dBm on Edge.
T-Mo stated that this should not be happening. Hence the 3 phones new battery and charger and techs to the antennas. I'm starting to think its a HTC Android problem and not a T-Mo problem. Hopefully a new radio update can fix it.
I didn't even know GSM was still used in that way, I thought GPRS would be the bare minimum. How can you tell the difference? I use to only get a G icon and I looked it up and for the g1 it said that meant GPRS, what does it show for GSM? Not like any of this matters though.
I really have no idea why all this is happening to your G1 but I hope it gets resolved, good luck.
edit: on the tmobile coverage map it says edge/gprs and 3g, no gsm. does that make any difference? I checked for NYC overall not any specific boroughs.

GSM is what Edge Gprs and 3G run off of. Think of it as a progression. GSM>GPRS>EDGE>3G.
The way I know it is on GSM is to the left of the Radio icon on the home screen there is another icon that shows the network your on. 3G=3G E=EDGE G=GPRS and no icon means GSM. GSM is still being used. Most SMS and MMS messages get sent to your from through GSM while you are on a call.

Please Report If 3G Is working (or not) On Your MXPE

Edit: Problem has been resolved. See thread linked below in this first post.
Original Post:
Please confirm whether or not 3G data works on your MXPE and report which carrier you are using. If an MVNO, please
report the network affiliation.
I am using Ting on Sprint network and my 3G data does not work.
I described the problem In this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-style/help/3g-data-t3233752
I'm working with Ting and Motorola to troubleshoot the problem. I am aware of 3 phones counting mine that do not get 3G data. Trying to ascertain whether this is a fairly isolated problem, if all MXPE phones have the issue, if this is a Sprint issue, or if it is a Ting or other MVNO issue on Sprint.
To summarize: Voice, text, LTE and 1X data all work. 3G data does not work although twice I was able to get it to work for less than 1 minute. It makes no difference if I am in an LTE area or not. SignalCheck Pro mostly reports the 3G data connection as "unregistered" although sometimes it reports it as "inactive". A SIM swap from a Sprint SIM to a Ting SIM made no difference (exact same part number). Various factory resets and carrier wipes also made no difference.
Another symptom is that my phone will not activate unless I have a Wi-Fi connection. Apparently the 3G data connection is needed to properly activate the phone.
Thanks much,
DC
Yes, on Verizon
I'm on Sprint, and when I'm in a low signal area (home), my 3G cycles on and off constantly. I came from a 2013 Moto X and did NOT have this issue. If Marshmallow update doesn't fix it, I will likely sell it and go Nexus 5x.
yes works on Verizon
Sent from my Moto X Pure Edition
Al three, LTE, 3G and 2G work on AT&T.
Looks like I am not alone here.
Mine is Moto X Pure Edition 32GB from Amazon.
I am in Singapore using Starhub.
I have LTE/4G or 3G, but it is like on and off.
Especially when I am on the train and the train goes underground, mostly i am not connected to internet.
It may show LTE or H, when I load FB, it will show me loading icon. That's it.
Hopefully this is a software bug.
It really pissed me off since my old phone Xperia Z Ultra has no issue at all in that area.
Anyone find anyway to fix it?
Thanks.
Thanks for the help. I also posted this request on a couple of other forums and even though the response was limited, there does not appear to be an issue with Sprint which leaves my phone or Ting as the problem.
DC
It works fine for me I'm on T-Mobile. Have you tried going into the settings and searching for cellular network? Because I had a strange issue where my LTE wasn't coming on. I'll post a screen shot of what I'm talking about.
This is in the settings where it says more.
As soon as I push cellular network it starts to scan then a list of providers pop up then I select my provider.

Turning off LTE in mobile network setting. That solve my problem for me. Personally I like to control network mobile manually. My old phone used to be completely manual means I can force my old phone to connect U.S. Cellular(3G) or Verizon(3G) while im in the 1x area.

Yes, I'm very familiar with that menu but it must be different for CDMA carriers. I get a new menu after choosing cellular network and one of the options (Preferred Network Type) is where I can choose LTE, 3G, 1X or Global. Makes no difference which I choose, 3G still doesn't work.
I've returned the phone to Motorola for a replacement.

Just turned off 4g to see if 3g works since I always get 4g where I live. It works fine on Verizon.

Hi DC, I have the exact same problem as you. Wondering if getting a new phone from Motorola fix your 3g issue?
Thought I would test this since I'm on Sprint. Forcing 3g seems to work fine, downloading speedtest on 3g right now.
I am on MM and did not test on LP.

The new phone did not fix the issue. Still no 3G data. What carrier are you with? So far, other than a couple of overseas users, the only people I've found with the problem were customers of a Sprint MVNO.
Since I sent the first MXPE back, I've acquired an Airave because the Sprint signals at my house are a bit weak. Strange thing is that I do get 3G data when connected to the Airave but nowhere else.
DC
Update. After two Moto X PE phones, numerous factory resets, much research and testing, there is now a work around to this problem. The problem does not appear to impact any phones on the big 4 networks. It only impacts phones on a Sprint MVNO.
Thanks to all who participated in this thread.
There are now known eHRPD issues with Sprint and their MVNOs. The work around solution is to disable eHRPD. Sprint is working on changes to eHRPD that may resolve the issue permanently. Thanks to Ting for their persistence in helping get to the bottom of this problem.

3G on Moto X Pure Edition.
Yes it works in some area's on T-Mobile, Does not work sometimes. Wish the range was better.

928i 4G not working, 3G intermittent and dropping calls - recently started occuring

this phone has started playing up, 4G wont connect at all and 3G is constantly changing between H and H+. Phone calls dropping and battery draining fast.
Have tried factory reset
flashing older Samsung firmware
Nothing is making a difference. Tried my SIM in another phone and it instantly connects to 4g.
This only started about two weeks ago.
Any one else have this issue? i'm in the uk on the 3 network.
UPDATE: it appears the 4G radio is faulty - setting it to 3g only solves the issues.
UPDATE : I'm so gutted that this phone 4g/3G is ****. Love the phone but loads of people and reviews suggesting 4g/3G issues with this phone and high number of call drops. I did a test today, I put my sim in an iPhone 6 and instantly connected to 4g and speed test was through the roof peaking at 38mb. Put the sim back into the s6 edge plus and only connects to 3G. But unable to browse the Internet. This confirms my fears that the 4g chipset/antenna are ****. In this phone. Which is a real shame as the phone is my favorite ever. Going to get an iPhone now. Connectivity is the most important thing and I can't be dealing with this crap from such an expensive phone. Shame on you Samsung.

I have the exact trouble as yours whichs about constantly changing between the H and H+. (4G is not matter, its new around here). When it turns on H, doesnt connect any site and application which need data connection. But H+ is doing normal. I bought an unlimited data package is provided for up limit 7.2Mbps. Dug something and saw that HSDPA(H) technology's up limit is 7.2 for our carrier. Then bought limited turbo data package(shows as up limit 43Mbps) but still changing H and H+ Thats not such for current device. It was in such an annoying situation since H+ available to connect. Tried to force use H+ but no luck. Sorry for long article and bad grammar. Just saying. Thanks.

Been doing a lot of research and it appears to me that this phone is crap at holding 4g/3G signals. I think this is a hardware/design fault. Most people won't release this until they test this on an iPhone in the same location and see the huge difference. Can't believe Samsung would release a huge pile of crap.

I don't have this problem mine is actually reverse. I have better signal and faster Internet than my Samsung s5

Signal problem theory/research

Hello, i live in a relatively small town where my service provider has very poor 4G signal. but pretty good 3G signal. With the Axon 7 i have a lot of signal problems that i didnt have with any of my previous phones, where outdoor signal is pretty bad and indoor signal is almost unusable. It also connects almost exclusively to 4G, and in contrast all of my previous phones connected almost exclusively to 3G. Over the last weekend i traveled to a major city where my service provider has very strong 4G signal, and the signal problem was almost non existant. I even had signal in places where other people with the same service provider did not. So my theory is the following, assuming that the hardware (antenna) used for 4G and 3G is the same, it may not be a hardware problem, but a problem with the software having a hard time knowing which band/signal it should connect to. It seems that in my case it prioritizes 4G signal and the cost of a VERY unstable cellphone service. This is also assosiated with the fact that when it connects to 3G (incredibly rare), the phone goes inmediately from 1/2 bars to 4/5 bars. I also changed the SIM configuration to leave LTE out, but either for a visual bug or a software bug, it keeps connecting only to 4G. So could this be the problem that me and a lot of people in low 4G signal zones are having? Is there anyway i can force the phone to connect exclusivly to the 3G signal to test if that is indeed the problem?
Regards!

Regards!

Without knowing which model Axon 7 you are using, where you are using it, and who your provider is, there is little anyone can do to help you. All I can say is that it helped me A LOT to go into settings and turn off
VoLTE.

U model last update, using it from Argentina, and the provider is Claro. I have LTE disabled in SIM confg as i already said and VoLTE turn of as well but the phone keeps connecting to 4G no matter what i do, even if i configure it to only GSM
I don't think its a matter of position or provider (version could be if different software is provided), but a general issue with the phone and band/signal interpretation coupled with the apparent innability to go off 4G
Refards!

ok when it connects to LTE it says "4G LTE". The 4G that you are getting is probably HSPA or something. And we had someone on here a few months back using Claro in Argentina and they had to seek answers from their Claro

If "4G LTE" is 4G and "4G" is HSPA, when only a "G" appears, what band am i connecting too? Its still pretty weird that im having major signal issues in my town, but when i go to a big city my signal is even better than other phones, it seems inconsistent with the whole "bad hardware" theory. I talked to Claro and it seemed like from their end it was a non issue, can you point me to the thread to see if he got it fixed somehow?
Regards!

/Trolling a bit/
I'm always LMAO when I hear US people talking about that 4G scam (which is H+ for real btw)
G is for 2G
E is for 2G+
3G is 3G
H is 3G+
H+ is 3G++ (an intermediary protocol up to 42MBps)
4G is LTE (up to 150Mbps in the EU most of the time)
4G+ is LTE-A (which is available in most of the EU, SK & JP) - up to 600Mbps, 200MBps in most tests
I've not heard of an app that could modify the way the phone "clings" to 4G LTE, since that might likely be the modem firmware doing it on its own.

Then this is even weirder, because is G is not 3G, but 2G it means that the phone NEVER connects to the major band that all of my previous phones and Claro users connect to. Is there anyway to force to only connect to 3G?
Regards!
i have the G european model, in my town i have bad lte signal 1/2bar, when with my previously xiaomi mi4c was got 4/5 bars (maximum). In the big town i have got in the most of cases 4/5 bars. I think the "signal problems" are relatives of a lack of somehow software. i told this because i've read with the china model with the last updates an improvement of the signal reception of the phone.

You can however force a specific protocol indeed, but you will lack the ability to autoswitch networks. Just download 4G LTE Switch (here) which is a glorified secret code dialer. Just click on prefered network and change at your convenience (4G LTE only, WCDMA only - H+ - and so on). Remember that if you force 4G LTE in an area in which you have no coverage, you won't have internet, and no 2G/3G fallback (so no texts, no calls)
I don't know if this is the same problem, but my wife has an iPhone 6+ and I have an A2017U on B29 stock root. We both use the same network (Movistar Mexico) and while her iPhone often registers LTE, my A7 often registers 4G or even E in the same place. The A7 is receiving the same bands but appears to be "choosing" or locking into the slower protocols more often.
EDIT: NEVER MIND… an xposed module was messing with my network settings. Fixed it. Now I get LTE right away.

Which module?
What if flash any Custom OS?Would it give better signal ?

Starting to get annoyed with the O variant phone in the UK

It's all too frequently dropping 4G or LTE connection when on the move. It's showing a connection, good strength too, but no data connection working. Often needing an airplane mode toggle or reboot to get online again.
5G is disabled as I'm nowhere near a 5G area.
Anyone got any ideas? Different firmware or something?
I'm starting to regret moving away from the SD note 10 plus I had. That phone was rock solid.

I read that some people have issues with connection with some ISP providers. Try putting it on 3G and see if it works fine then. If it does then ISP has either sn issue with 4G network or phone needs a firmware fix to solve 4G connection issue if this isn't a hardware problem thought. Since for me it works fine here and my 4G shows all time and I even have 4G+ as status without an issue.
try disabling WiFi calling that helped in my case
Tried all that. Went into a town and it didn't again.. Had to force it onto 4g to get a connection.

Haven't had any issues myself, on giffgaff. Tried O2 briefly, it seemed okay too.

Give this app a try, might help fixing it to one band
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ray.samsungbandselection
Yes u have that thanks. It seems to be band switching that's the problem. Or is it possible my carrier has live but unused bands that the phone is locking into? So when I travel I find myself with a dead data connection?
